It had only been a few days since Victoria and her siblings had emerged from the warm sanctuary of their wicker baskets but they were already growing up quickly. Larkin and Aurelia would often come up with some sort of strange game where one would chase the other, and though they attempted to get her involved she just didn’t find it very diverting. More often than not she could be found staring at the strange necklace her father wore, and the tiny machine with its own heartbeat upon it. A clock she believed it was called? Upon asking her dad about it he had said something about keeping time and with that answer her little brain had begun to delve deeper into the meaning. For now though her thoughts had been silent as she searched the meadow near their home for a quiet place to hide away. She had hardly noticed the gray haze choking out the sun or the vapor emanating from her nostrils with each breath she took.

It wasn’t uncommon for Victoria to be able to tune things out, she didn’t quite know what to call it yet but she saw more good than harm in it. She only stopped to take notice of her surroundings when small, fragile looking white flakes began to descend from above. Lifting her gray eyes skyward she watched as they swirled and danced, taking pleasure in this one simple moment. Once a thin layer had painted the ground she noticed that it sparkled in the most lovely way and a rare smile curved her maw upward. A childish giggle soon followed and before her more serious side took over she spread her wings out and began to twirl slowly.

Larkin Cert

Had it really been only just a few days since he left the darkness of the basket and entered the world of light? His silver eyes looked up to the grey cloud filled sky, his breath came out in a white fog and a smile crossed his face. Snow. It was not something he had ever seen before, but his mother would repeat tales her grandmother used to tell her about snow covered lands and a special flower that only grew in the most frigid of places. He looked around, searching for his sisters, wanting to share this new experience with them. Aurelia was near Nakita and Cyrus, but Victoria was nowhere to be seen. Without a word he headed off in the last direction he saw his oldest sister walking.

As he made his way, tiny white flakes fell from the sky, barely coating the earth with the first snow fall. A smile appeared on his countenance as he danced with the flakes. A girlish giggle drew him to an open clearing where he witnessed his sister dancing just as he had moments before. Winter truly is a wonderful time of the year.

Around, and around, and around the world twirled as Victoria demonstrated an uncharacteristically childish side of herself. She could feel the small flakes melting into her coat but also took note of how they sparkled in the gray light as they fell. She would have kept on like this had she not caught the faintest tinge of blue and black from the corner of her eye. Coming to a complete stop she allowed her head to finish swimming before clearing her throat and shifting her gaze uncomfortably.
“Larkin.” She stated stiffly.
It was not like her to play around like a foolish little foal, a fact that became more and more obvious as her cheeks turned multiple shades of rouge. Slowly tucking her wings once again to her sides she approached him, posturing herself in a way that screamed denial. Her gray eyes wandered as she looked for her other siblings but when none appeared she glanced once more to her brother.
“Do you need something? Are mother and father looking for me?”
Coming to a halt just before him she straightened her shoulders and looked expectantly at him. She was very different from each of her siblings, and though they would never know, she loved them very much. She rarely felt out of place among them, but always felt as though she had an image to uphold. One of dignity, intelligence and maturity.

He watched with a smile as his sister danced beneath the white falling snow, she had let go of all her dignity and embraced the art of dance. She would have fit in perfectly with the dancers of the Flock their mother would describe, graceful mares who could tell a story with their movements. His smile slowly vanished when she spotted him and her lovely snow dance came to a stop, snow began to collect on her now still body. He should have hidden himself and not let his sister see him, she needs to let loose more, for she is always so strict all the time.

Larkin nodded his head at his sister when she said his name, “No, Victoria, I do not need anything and father and mother are fine. You worry too much.” He wanted to frown, she had gone back to stiff and stoic, and “You know, you should dance more often, you are quite good.” He tried to think of a poetic description of how his sister looked as she danced beneath the snow, “You looked like a Frost Fairy casting snowflakes upon the world.” He smiled at her, trying to get her to do the same, “Do you want me to leave so you can continue to frolic?”

Larkin never understood why Victoria pulled herself away from him and his other siblings. She was the oldest by a few minutes and yet seemed to carry the weight of the world.

Her brother was the most amazing colt she had ever met, and she was not being biased because he was blood. He was always attempting to bring out her softer side, to make the mask she wore melt away and reveal her true self. In this instant she wanted to nuzzle him, to tell him that he made her heart well with pride, and to let him know that she, though older, looked up to him. But, she did not. Instead she gave a curt nod at his response followed by a look of utter disbelief.

“I was not dancing! I was observing the flight patterns of the flakes as they fell to the ground.” Giving him another odd look she shook her head. “Frost Fairies aren’t real Larkin, only the clouds spread snow.” Even though she was attempting to deny the whole moment she couldn’t keep herself from allowing a nearly imperceptible smile tug at the corner of her lips. Larkin was good at that. With a snort the smile was gone and she rolled her eyes. “Me? Frolic! Ha!”

“So, did you come out here to search for Frost Fairies or did you have a purpose to your wandering?” She once more sought out her sister but when she was nowhere to be found within this white blanket she gave it up. Appraising her brother she allowed a note of sensitivity to enter her tone. “Are you okay?”

Larkin gave up on trying to hide his smile, “Sure you were. And what kind of pattern did they make Miss Frost Fairy? Oh and how do you know they are not real, you do not need to see to believe. There is a whole different world out there that is unseen by our eyes. Just imagine, a whole civilization of creatures who control the weather, the seasons, and just everything!” His words came faster as he got more excited about the prospect of the unknown. He laughed at his sister’s reaction, “It sure looked like frolicking to me.”

The young foal came closer to his sister, “Not fairies, I came searching for you on this first day of snow. Is it not amazing!?” He turned around in a circle, letting the snow fall on his wings. “I am fine. As I said before, you worry too much.”
