He had not been out for quite a while. But when he appeared again, it was just a blink of an eye between one moment and the last. A year was an arbitrary measure of time, and a short one at that: Kurma's natural state of being was a simple pleasure in existing and a lack of concern for the passage of time. Temporary things were accepted as such with a knowing smile. Eternal things were appreciated and reached out to in kinship -- it was a rare, deeply sad instance in which the eternal was turned temporary. Chaos had once again proven its ability to act on the possibility.
Snowflakes disintegrated into water the moment they touched his outstretched hands. Tonight, try as he might (and he was not one to try at things often), he could not allow his thoughts to drift towards eternal things.
Not when he had been an instrument in the demise of one. Not when the foreign sensation of guilt was plaguing his psyche. Not when, against the ever-shifting chorus of the universe, there was small but terrible pinprick of silence, enormous in the unnaturalness of it.
Gravity was a heavy cloak around his shoulders. Kurma's feet were planted firmly on the ground, making dragging prints down an unplowed sidewalk.

Something felt incredibly foreign and Kallichore couldn't put her finger on it as to why. One moment she'd been intensely patrolling and had been unceremoniously disappointed when only a small youma about the size of a pitbull and about as effective as a wiffle ball was found and the next... ...the next she'd been drawn to a very odd something. The signal was unlike anything she'd ever encountered and the eternal liked to think she'd encountered much on her journey since taking up the mantle of senshi. A year and a half (perhaps more) had been both cruel and kind. She'd come to know corruption first hand and managed to watch the dizzying end of the end and step back from it. It was not often she thought about that moment - she more often thought about the result. The time before versus the time afterwords. How nothing would ever be the same. She frowned, eyes narrowing on the figure with the odd signal walking below her. Normally she would skulk (or 'gargoyle' as Ganymede would call it) before pouncing on the person. But this time she chose instead to run ahead and drop some meters ahead of him and turn around. The senshi was not in an entirely defensive stance but the look of intrigue was unusual. Kallichore didn't know what to make of the man. She was cautious, semi-ready. "Are you... friend or foe...?"

Meeting someone new was supposed to always be a happy occasion. And, on some level, it was -- a suppressed joy, evident only in his immediate willingness to make eye contact with the senshi and say “Hi.” Familiar wing accoutrements graced her uniform. This senshi had achieved great power. In spite of himself, he wondered how much knowledge of herself she had gained on her journey.
“If you seek a fight, then you’d do better looking elsewhere,” the man replied. One hand was peaceably raised, and the other kept his orb tucked under his arm. “I am called Kurma. I am a guide to the cosmos. I can do no harm.” It was somewhat stilted, as far as introductions went. “Though I suppose, if it suits, I can also be a friend.”
A lighthearted smile brushed at his features, but faltered before it could become genuine.
“Funny thing... it was also snowing when I first met the senshi of nowadays,” he remarked, by means of conversation. “Though I think I haven’t met you. Or if I have, it’s been a while.”

"...guide to the cosmos? Kurma..." she repeated. Where had she heard the name before? It had been mentioned somewhere in passing and at the time, Kallichore didn't think anything of it. So whoever Kurma was, he was indeed a real being. And a guide - something Kallichore had desperately wanted. Her defensive stance broke and the eternal took a few steps towards the man, eyes watching the orb he had tucked under one arm. What was it? "I... apologize." she started, voice even and low. "I have never felt anything quite like you. With the way things are these days, one can never be too careful." She bowed her head. "I apologize." If she was a guide to the cosmos, would she be walking alone a lonely road in the middle of the snow without any sort of protection? Being as enlightened as she assumed he was, she found it odd he was out here, on Earth. She tilted her head. "Why are you alone, Kurma? Are you lost in your thoughts? Do you need protection?"

Kurma was unphased by the initial suspicion, the battle-ready stance. Others had reacted to his presence in much the same way, both in more recent times and in older times. Not everyone was eager to form acquaintanceships with everyone they met, which was a strange reality to him, but one that did did not stop him from trying. "It's alright," he replied. "There's no shame in caution."
The senshi hadn't told him her name yet. From what he'd gathered, such a thing was... impolite. But she was eager with questions -- about him. They were unusual things to ask. It took him a while to answer. For a moment, he let his gaze drift to the ground, contemplating.
"I am usually alone," he began, "and I'm usually lost in thought."
A funny thing to admit, but true nonetheless.
"And... I don't need protection." Even though it was possible, perhaps even easy, to kill him. This, however, had never been a cause of concern. "If anything happens to me, I'll be back around eventually."
Which checked the third item off the list. Simple questions, simple answers. Was that it, though? It left Kurma's side of the conversation wanting. Usually he liked to draw questions out of those he met. This way of conducting himself didn't seem like it was suiting him tonight. It was wearing on him already. He looked back at his companion for the evening.
"Mind telling me where you're from?" He was gesturing at her brooch and tiara -- evidently, he wasn't asking for her hometown. "And, if you can, I... have another question."

Kallichore wondered for a moment if Kurma was lonely but realized she was just the same - often lost in her thoughts, especially these days. Too much had happened and it was all too easy to focus on the terrible things rather than the good. She sighed. It was comforting to know Kurma knew how to take care of himself. Someone as important as a guide to the cosmos was worth protecting even if she didn't know much about him. Now that her questions were answered, she gave Kurma a polite nod. "Ask anything you like. I'm Kallichore. I have heard of you, momentarily. I forget where or when but it was far before my time, sadly. I feel... privileged to meet you now. I imagine much has changed since you last came, unless you are ever-present. I know much has changed since I took up the mantle." For better or worse... nowadays it always seems worse.

"Kallichore," he repeated. "Think I've heard that's an interesting place. You should tell me about it sometime." In that, he assumed she had been there. Time since his last visit with any senshi had been short, but also ample enough that many must have learned how to travel, and attempted it themselves. "Meeting anyone is a privilege. And, so, I also feel privileged to meet you."
Another brief smile, and an affirming nod. "Ah, but... my question..." Considering it made his demeanor hollow out a bit. It was a difficult subject to speak on. "You must know many senshi, if you've come this far..." he began, slowly, gesturing again to her uniform. "So I wish to know..."
Breathe.
"...if you knew Sailor Alkaid... of Guidance."

"I should be the one thanking you, shouldn't I?" she asked, bowing to him slightly with a hand to her chest. "One such as you... it's likely a lucky happenstance to have met you in the first place. Do all senshi receive this honor?" His statement about her moon struck her as odd and as making complete sense. Had Kurma been to her moon? Did he know its secrets? Being a guide to the cosmos he likely knew of many moons, stars, comets and the like. Perhaps he knew the entirety of the universe better than she knew her own house. She would have to ask, later. Not after she'd been asked what appeared to be a very important question. The eternal considered this carefully. A brief nod. "Yes. I did not know she was Guidance, being that her main objective seemed to be disemboweling me." Kallichore frowned and turned away for a moment. It had been a long time since then. Since... Ares was whole and worth calling a friend. "She was Super then. I have no doubt she'd more powerful than that now. She and... what was her name... Serandite. Both of them were there when Ares saved me and inducted me into the Blood Moon. But that was so long ago." Turning back to Kurma, she gave another long, deep sigh. A sigh of someone who had seen much and carried it with her everywhere she went. "...things have changed so much since then."

"Honor... luck... and gratitude..." Kurma pondered, "have nothing to do with my purpose. All things received from me are lost things returned to their rightful owners." The formalities were regarded with a slow, but still dismissive handwave. He had no desire to be elevated or feel important. "I have not met every senshi in the cosmos. But that is because such a feat hasn't been so easy to pull off."
The guide listened carefully, hopefully, to Kallichore's words -- even though they were disappointing from the outset. Disemboweling her? That was not the Alkaid he remembered. And there was a name that sounded like a name from one of Chaos's latest gambits... Li'l Moon and Cosmos referred to them as the Negaverse. A defeated look seeped into his features at the story. He knew nothing of Ares, or of the Blood Moon Court. But he had learned that Alkaid must have been under the influence of dark forces for a while.
"So you did not know her before she was lost," he concluded. "But you knew her before she was Silenced."
Indeed, things had changed.

Kallichore tilted her head at the guide. "...your purpose is a very important one, so I thank you. That is all." Even if you cannot appreciate it, or choose not to. She wanted to thank him for whatever insight he may give her, or to her people, the senshi. By his own admission he had met senshi before this time. Perhaps he had given them wisdom as well. Such a thing was to be commended. But Kallichore did not know what Kurma had meant by 'Silenced'. She stepped forward. "I did not know her before that night and that night was the only time I had seen her. I managed to stop her before she could hit me. I overheard her saying something about Nemesis but that is all that I know." The gray haired senshi turned away for a moment. "...I am sorry, I know nothing else about her. But what do you mean by... silenced? Is she dead? Turned into a monster like that thing called Tanzanite?" That was all Kallichore could come up with, all she could equate the statement to mean. How else could one become silenced unless one ceased to exist entirely? The Negaverse would good at that.

A simple thanks, brought about by a sense of honor, he could accept. Kurma silently allowed the apology with another slow nod. There was no need for no words to debate the issue further: she was grateful, he did not need to receive gratitude to feel fulfilled. It was an acceptable, silent agreement.
Tanzanite.
Kurma's composure faltered. The questions were painful ones. It was a foreign feeling to be asked painful questions, and a worse one to recognize his wishes to avoid them. His brow furrowed, worry lines sprouting across his forehead, as he averted his gaze from Kallichore for a moment. He was no longer standing, but sitting crosslegged in midair, hands clutching at his knees. It had not just been Tanzanite. His own involvement was equal cause, and that was unforgivable.
"You can see the star Alkaid from here. It's found in the constellation Ursa Major."
His gaze did not turn to the sky. It remained fixed on the orb in his lap.
"Or... it was... and soon... it will no longer be part of the sky here."
Light took a while to travel. This, people were aware of, and the nightscape seen on Earth was the light of an earlier era. Remembering this, and being able to see Alkaid's star as if nothing had happened to it at all, had been unbearable.
"I don't know what became of the senshi. But her star has been swallowed by Chaos. It cannot be restored. Its voice has been taken from the cosmos. Silenced."
There was the word again. He looked back at Kallichore.

Kallichore turned her eyes skyward though she was embarrassed by the fact that she couldn't tell Ursa Major from any other cluster of stars in the sky. She'd never been an astronomer, never previously interested in space. Space was a place living far outside her scope, far outside her life, her perceptions. At least until two years ago. Even then her gaze always turned to Jupiter, to her moon beyond that. Human eyes couldn't see it but her soul could feel it up there, calling down to her quietly. Happily. Turning back to Kurma, she found him floating in the air, saddened. She stepped towards him in a gesture of comfort, lifting one hand as if to touch him on the knee. Even before he started to speak again the eternal fought with herself - was it appropriate to offer human comfort to someone who seemed so far and above a human? Would he understand the gesture? Would it mean anything? ...and then the silence was explained. Kallichore swallowed a heavy lump in her throat, her heart sinking into depths she didn't know she had. "Chaos... swallowed it?" Chaos could do such a thing? Now their stars, moons, comets... their homes were in danger? Kallichore didn't know what to think. How could they protect both the Earth and their homes out in space? Was that even possible? "How...?! When...? Can they..." The eternal was at a loss. "...can they take the rest of them? The stars? Are they in danger? Kurma, is space now threatened as well?!" Is Chaos winning?!

Kurma did not seem to notice the offer of a comforting hand. He was, as she had asked but a few minutes ago, lost in thought. The physical world around him disappeared as he recalled what he had witnessed: being flung from space, claw wounds running deep through his chest, had been the least painful of the whole experience. The death throes of the star still haunted his thoughts, and Perry's dreams.
Kallichore's reactions were understandable. It matched what he was feeling inside. And to her questions, he could only answer with a pained, "Yes." His voice was hoarse and wavering around the word.
"Alkaid went willingly. Chaos had blinded her to her true self."
I tried to open her eyes again, and failed, was the unspoken.

Her soul almost ached to hear that Alkaid gave up her star to Chaos... willingly. The eternal had heard of people becoming corrupted willingly, but giving up one's star? The source of one's power? One's old home? How could they be so blind? How could they survive without their star? Did Alkaid die from this ordeal? Were others likely to follow her? Kallichore stepped back and sighed, looking away. "Chaos has been blinding so many people..." she said quietly. Her mind was whirring, spinning into countless theories of how to prevent this from happening again. How to protect the others and perhaps convert them back to their true selves. They needed to be shown the real way, not the easy way. "I... want to believe such a thing can be reversed or better yet, prevented from happening again." I wish I knew how. We have two royals on our side, perhaps more, but they have not been able to purify anyone I know of. Could the star be restored? Could Alkaid be saved? She didn't know any of the answers and it pained her to admit such a thing.

The burden of knowledge was no less heavy upon being shared. Kurma gave a pained and weary sigh, a background noise to Kallichore's observations. "Yes... it has," he agreed, in a low near-whisper to match the senshi's own. In most occasions, he believed, there was always a chance to free someone from the grasp of Chaos. But, in the case of Alkaid, he could offer no such hope. "I don't know of a way to reverse a Silencing, Kallichore." Metallia had already taken everything the young senshi had to offer: her soul, her body, her power, her very star itself. The path to rebirth had been closed to Alkaid forever. All that was left to hope for her was that her fractured mind and body weren't suffering anymore... and that as future eras passed, she wouldn't be forgotten. "I'd hoped you might know more about who Alkaid was here on Earth," he explained. "You do not. That is fine. However, it seems like you know of others who are lost."
