Ofelia didn't know how to celebrate Christmas. It wasn't something they did in the household she'd grown up in, she'd never been invited to someone else's home in order to do it, so the teen was rather at a loss for how it was supposed to go down.

Buy presents?
Cook stuff?
Kiss under mistletoe?
Guilt trip people for various reasons?

Those were all wonderful things, except maybe the last one, and Ofelia was walking slowly through the dorms to the kitchen. Portals were open which meant people had resupplied some of the stock. Ofelia herself hadn't been allowed to go - the bracelet on her arm had the techs manning them turning her away super quickly - so she would need to make do with whatever was in there. Eventually the teen would find her way off the Island, come hell or high water, but for now she just needed to suck it up.

Her attire for the day was simple, clothing she'd been given by a passing hunter who 'felt bad for the girl who dressed like a hobo, merry christmas'. A sweater that was too large for her body, khaki pants that clung to her legs like someone had painted them on. Her flip flops had been replaced by a pair of flats, though the objects in question were tied about her hips and bounced against her thighs as she moved. Her hair was in a long, long braid that bounced against her lower back, touching the tips of her buttocks with the end of it. It had taken her a while to braid and she was proud of its length - perhaps next time she got out she'd buy ribbons or something.

For the time being though she'd be content to just...cook and bake. Perhaps a pie was in order, she hadn't made one in a while.

With the new snow abound at Deus, Stormy had begun to bring out the heavier clothes - well, snuggies and fuzzy pants at least. And slippers. Her favorites, themed after Eeyore, were the ones she was sporting today when she left her room.

< < Hardly conducive to sparring, > > Thane remarked with invisibly raised brows.

Not training right now. I want to make stuff.

< < "Make stuff"? > >

Well, bake more like.

The dracolich fell silent after a sigh, deciding that the Joy infection she'd gotten from that Allan fellow was not something he could compete with. Frustrating, but the truth.

The trainee ghosted along down the corridor, remembering that she had seen a kitchen in the dorms. It seemed someone else was also heading that way as well, a rather familiar someone. Rather than greet Patches immediately, Stormy decided to follow along at a distance and see how long she could go undetected while following the older Hunter.

Ofelia was not observant, at least not when it came to her own surroundings or anything involving herself. When it came to noticing things about others she was usually spot on and Rue would have attributed it to Ofelia's more animal-like instincts.

That was a fact that almost everyone in the entire compound knew, so it wasn't a surprise that Ofelia didn't notice she was being followed. Her steps took her easily into the kitchen, her destination from way beforehand, and a sigh escaped her lips as she looked around. Someone had been in there earlier and had left a mess, pots and pans and everything of the sort scattered all around, so in order to properly make anything she'd need to clean up first.

Ofelia rolled her sleeves up, dragging a rather interesting bracelet up in the process, and when it slid back down to stop on her wrist she started gathering the supplies together. there may have been a few curse words uttered under her breath, mostly about people not being responsible enough to clean up after themselves, but otherwise she was pretty silent as she worked. Soon the sink was full and water was turned on to get things going. After that the redhead glanced about to see if there was fresh fruit to be had. She could always make a pie from canned fruits but that never had the taste she really liked.

The entire while she still didn't notice if someone was watching her or not.

Stormy slunk behind, gently placing one foot in front of the other. When Patches entered the kitchen, she pinned herself to the wall and slid until she was just by the entrance. Five seconds. Ten seconds. Fifteen seconds.

Then she passed the threshold and stretched, yawning as casually as you could please and not like she had been practicing a bit of sneaking around. Eeyore, you sly dog you; these slippers would prove useful someday, she was sure.

"Mmmmm~ Oh! Hullo." She blinked drowsily at Patches as she entered, dropping her arms once the joints had popped. "'Sup? You hungry too?"

Ofelia was a little startled at the sudden noise behind her, enough that the dishes were dropped into the sink and Rue was instantly summoned to her hands. The blades looked rather fearsome for some reason, more so than they usually wore, and Ofelia wondered if it was because Rue was getting stronger. Upon seeing that the noise had been made by a person - someone she sort of knew (and killed in a dream-thing) - the weapon was dismissed and Ofelia returned to the dishes like it wasn't a thing. She totally wasn't going to admit she just had a weapon turned on someone for nothing more than walking in a room.

"Hello there." She tried to keep it cool, totally cool and Ofelia-style. "Yeah, a bit hungry but someone left a mess so Ah gotta clean it up. Jus' not in me ta leave a kitchen in a bad state." Back home leaving the kitchen a mess meant she had a hard time making food for herself. Perhaps people would learn that here if stuff got left around but Ofelia took all the hunters as the type who would just buy new dishes rather than clean them. The lazy sort with entirely too much money to spend. "Didja need sommin' made? Once Ah'm done cleanin' Ah was gonna work on sommin' ta bake, but if yer hungry Ah can cook fer ya. Jus' name a dish an' its yers." So smooth, Ofelia-style.

The sight of the glowing red runes was enough to bring her half-lidded eyes to wide open for a few seconds, the small crash of dishes to the bottom of the sink enough to elicit a short gasp. Her first instinct was to back away a step rather than summon Thane in response, a fact that made the dracolich very displeased. Where was her battle sense? Her sense of self preservation? She fidgeted a bit and didn't move forward until Patches dismissed her weapons, and even so there was a distinct pause after the older Hunter had finished speaking.

< < What happened to that one, to have such a defensive reaction? > >

Stormy bit her lip before, hands clasped, she nodded. "Yeah, uh . . . I was thinking of doing like a few batches of cookies to hand out to the others for Christmas or something . . .?" It wasn't meant to come out a question. She hesitated again, then stepped forward. "I'll help with the dishes if you want."

Unless Patches wanted to do it all herself. She was not going to argue with the older Hunter after that display.

Ofelia's mood turned from her sour and worried and slightly paranoid to pretty happy. all it took was the mention of cookies, which meant baking, and Ofelia loved to bake. The kitchen was full of supplies now despite someone trying to wreck it all earlier and she turned to look at the newbie with a sparkle in her gray eye. "Ah...love ta bake." It sounded like she was announcing she was some kind of serial killer, or someone who really didn't like to bake. If it wasn't for the fact her face was lit up like a Christmas tree it wouldn't be easy to believe. "Ah will totally help ya bake some up if ya help me wit' the dishes. Are ya good at dryin'?"

There was a small stack of dishes already waiting to be dried, Ofelia was almost a professional when it came to washing everything. Her cooking here and baking here so often had her doing it on a nearly daily basis.

"I-I think?" Was drying a profession? Maybe it was if you were a waiter or something . . . Had Patches been a waiter before? No, she decided as she approached, found the towel, and did her best to make sure it was clean before drying. Patches didn't seem like she'd belong at a restaurant. She looked more . . . dynamic than that.

Maybe a martial arts teacher. Yeah.

"I baked sometimes in the holidays," Stormy commented as she began to shrink the pile the older hunter had been stacking. "So doing it right now feels . . . right, y'know? A lot of people look sad here. Cookies might make it better."

"Sad" was a blanket term that included pulling a weapon on someone without preamble. There had to be a reason there were hard people like Patches and Sasha and weirdly violent ones like the red-headed man around.

Ofelia being dynamic was certainly a good way to describe her but that was about it. She certainly did enjoy moving around and being active and everything else but that was the extent. The redhead was very much a homebody who could fight as needed but was way more content to just cook and bake and be a woman. Seeing her and her personality though no one would ever guess she had this sort of love and desire. "Thanks, it makes it go faster when two sets'a hands are workin' an't jus' one." Ofelia knew how to say thanks and she did, the last bit of the dishes being finished swiftly under her skilled hands. A thought came into her mind that she needed to talk to the people in charge about maybe getting a runic dishwasher. As much as she enjoyed washing things by hand having one would make everything so much easier on everyone.

The new girl was talking about making cookies but her voice seemed so damn hesitant and Ofelia looked over with a set of raised eyebrow. " . . . are ya scared'a me there, kiddo?" She was blunt, to the point, and if this girl was going to be scared to in the kitchen with her she needed to know. "Ya startled me when ya came in an' so mah natural response was ta summon Rue - after that event we were on it kinda lingers in yer mind fer a while." It was also in Ofelia's nature to explain herself to prevent mistakes. "Sucks ya walked in on it, but Ah'm not unhappy or angry at ya." She wasn't going to say sorry because it had been a mistake and people shouldn't have to apologize for honest mistakes, right?

Nervous was a better word, but for a moment . . . scared had been correct. As much fighting as had happened in the last event, it wasn't enough to desensitize Stormy to the sight of weapons being summoned - much less when even for a moment she thought it would be used on her.

The spar with Jake had been one thing thanks to Joy. But remembering how the red-haired man had swung his huge ax at Sasha, plowed through Stormy's own defenses without care -

"S-Sorry," she squeaked as she finished drying the last dish and set it down. "I didn't - like you said, it was a natural response." Stormy had the grace to look contrite though, her hands clasped before her. "But I don't get why you'd want to - need to do something like that after that last battle. Unless . . . did someone attack you too? Like a Hunter?" In that case she wouldn't have blamed Patches at all.

"I, uh, brought Jake back like you asked," she added to help smooth things over. "He's doing okay now. Thanks for yelling at me, I wasn't thinking straight."

"No yer fine, no need ta apologize. It's been a while since another hunter went after me anyway, most'a 'em leave me be ta cook their meals. Yer really good at sneakin' up on people so consider me drawin' on ya a compliment? Means ya startled me an' Ah don't really startle easy." That was all the truth, Ofelia was both hard to startle and hard to scare. Getting a jump on her was no mean feat and so the compliment was well deserved. Ofelia wink-blinked at the younger girl to try and reassure her that she hadn't done anything wrong and there was no reason at all to be nervous around Ofelia. When it came to friendly people on the Island? Ofelia was most certainly one of them, if not at least the friendliest female.

The girl went on to talk about helping Jake and Ofelia nodded her head, a soft and relieved sigh coming from her mouth. "Thank ya so much fer that. The boy is stupid an' stubborn but...Ah kinda think'a him like a little brother. He hates mah guts though so Ah guess we really are like a pair'a siblin's, hah." There was a cackle on the end of the sentence and Ofelia finished washing the pot she had in her hands. That really was the last item, she'd found it while fishing in the water for any leftovers, and it was rinsed and handed over to the other girl. "So yeah, if there's anythin' Ah can do ta repay ya fer helpin' him like that, lemme know. It makes me happy ta know there's someone out there willin' ta help on the field ta anyone an' everyone, not jus' their favorite people." A soapy hand was placed on the other girl's shoulder because Ofelia, why would you do that.

"Ta move on from this an' get goin', ya said ya wanted ta bake cookies? Ya got any specific ones in mind? There's pretty much nothin' 'round in the kitchen Ah can't make in terms'a bakin' an' cookin'. A lot'a times Ah make the meals fer hunters an' -." She turned her head as a hunter came into the kitchen, and as an eyebrow was raised at the newcomer they simply waved to Ofelia, grabbed what looked like a pre-made bag lunch from the table, and walked out. "That guy gives me cash fer his lunches sometimes, so don't mind him. Kinda creepy though."

She brightened a bit at the compliment, even if it was for something a bit shady like sneaking up on people; out here it was good she could move about unnoticed. "He's nice enough under all that, I think," she added mildly after Patches cackled, drying up the last dish. "Well, with Joy at least. I don't think he hates so much as . . . throws cloudy scowls around. Everyone's got light and dark about them, right?" She wiggled the towel in the older Hunter's direction. "I thought you were kinda scary looking, but you seem pretty nice, Patches. And Miss Sasha probably thought I was stupid and newbie all fight long, but she still tried to heal me up. Two sides."

She could have brought up the Mei thing up even but withheld for the moment; Halloween was a sensitive subject from what she had gathered, and showing sympathy to the wrong people seemed like a quick way to start off on the wrong foot in Deus. And God did Stormy want to start off on as many right ones as possible.

"No favors needed, miss, it was the right thing to do. I'm too new to play favorites anyway," she added a bit sheepishly, like not knowing people was a bad thing. "Let's just cook something for the fun of it. I thought cookies at first, but everyone's buying them as gifts . . . Or at least I got like several bags so far as Christmas presents. D'you know any, like, cheesecake stuff? Or anything cakey actually? Or wait, maybe brownies!" *v* Brownies were always in season. "I'm leaning more towards cake though since I don't think people eat that a lot here . . . right?"

"Jake's all kind'sa adorable so it's jus' best sometimes ta let 'em brood. Guys like that think they can handle it on their own so it's up ta people like us ta be there as a backup. Jus' in case, yanno?" Ofelia dried her hands off on a towel, everything looked entirely done, and she listened to this new girl chatter on and on about the people she met. "Sasha's nice, yeah, but be careful'a her. Lots'a people 'round here got agendas ya don't wanna find yerself on the wrong end of - s'why Ah do mah best ta stay in the kitchen."

Ofelia totally missed that she'd been called Patches.

Or had she?

"As fer brownies, we can do some brownies, an' cake is always welcome. People like ta eat it whenever it's made an' it's simple 'nough ta make sommin' large fer everyone. Batches'a brownies are good too, we could use both ovens at once an' not have ta worry 'bout choosin' one or the other." That was basically Ofelia's roundabout way of saying they were going to make both brownies and a cake because portals had been opened and there were supplies. Baking also gave the redhead a chance to gather an inventory of her stock now that she'd be getting things back to where they belong. "Chesecake is easy ta make too but we can make that later. Ah wonder if those Halloween kiddos can eat anythin' we bake here too, Ah asked one'a 'em once an' he jus' tried ta stab me in the throat." The teen looked over to Stormy and grinned. "Guess he wasn't up fer talkin'."

Granted Ofelia had gone on after that point to beat him within an inch of his 'life', so to speak, but the new girl didn't need to know it just yet. She had said that she thought Ofelia was nice and the redhead really liked hearing those words. "Now that we got everythin' done, ya wanna get started? Ah'm free all day fer cookin' an' bakin' so mah undivided attention is all yers."

"People like us"? Stormy shrank a bit, more of the opinion that she was malleable, softer, prone to being influenced even against her wishes - nothing at all like Patches, who seemed to look pretty set on what she wanted no matter what. The older Hunter's words about secret agendas didn't help settle her. "Oh . . . In that battle I don't think she did. She followed me around and watched me almost get killed and even tried to heal me," she pointed out mildly. "I tried to return the favor when this big red-headed guy tried to hit her with a huge ax thing, but I got thrown into the swirly mist vortex thing . . ." And seemingly died. Maybe. She couldn't remember much of what had happened between then and hitting the Deus Life tents.

But she could still remember how very cold it had been and shivered.

And then shivered a little again when Patches told her she almost got stabbed in the throat, grin or no grin. "Spooky . . . But why d'you want to make them treats? Do they even eat anything except like . . . candy?" Stormy asked. Wait no, get started on baking, then ask all the questions. "Let's do both, yeah, since I might vomit a lot of questions at you . . . Brownies first!"

Because brownie batter was amazing to lick up okay.

"I, um, don't really remember how to bake these things, but I'm a really good mixer! And I don't mind getting dirty!" she added, because these things mattered terribly.

"Ah wanna make food fer everyone. Food is something that is meant ta be shared no matter who or what'cha are, yanno? It's a universal sign'a comfort an' so part'a me wants to find ways ta share that comfort as best Ah can." Ofelia grinned sheepishly. "Ah'm not much good fer anythin' else." Well except maybe smashing things and sending people to the infirmary but this newcomer didn't need to know that. Not now, not ever.

Or at least not yet. She'd find out in due time with how people walked around injured though Rep was the cause of most of those. "An' okay, brownies first it is. Yer always welcome ta ask me anythin' while bakin' an' cookin' since its' one'a the few times yer gonna have mah undivided attentions." That actually sounded like she was saying it backwards as most people usually were distracted beyond all reason when baking and cooking. The need to keep track of everything most often had people unsure of what to do yet Ofelia was getting things together like she had been doing this all of her life.

She had for most of it but that was beside the point.

"If yer good then Ah'll leave the mixin' ta ya. Do ya prefer ta use beaters or do it by hand? Ah usually do stuff by hand, gives me more'a feelin'a doin' well." Also good for the arm muscles.
