Sun Hunter SHADOW RUN General Information The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel. Simply roll for attack as you would in battle. If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings. After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

After going on that mission barehanded, Stormy knew she had to overcome her apprehension about the training missions and suck it up. There was no way she was going on another big one like that without something else to rely on. The shadows from her nightmares still plagued her, however, so she decided one day after another insomniatic episode that those would be the first things to conquer.
Arriving at the tunnel, she hefted Thane with a small grunt. Ready?
< < Always, > > he drawled. < < The question is, are you? > >
Let's find out. She swung and began to move forward.Status Wave: 1Attack Dmg: 4 Total Shadowlings taken out: 4 Recoveries left: 0 Charge: 1

They were everywhere. Crawling, writhing, nipping at her heels as she moved forward. She couldn't help but think of a certain video game that also had crawling shadows, and that her weapon was a distinctly key-shaped blade slashing through them, releasing stolen hearts -
< < Focus! You will die in battle if you let those airheaded thoughts cloud you! > >
Stormy winced and cut through another rank of the small creatures. Sorry . . . I really couldn't help it. She had all these thoughts, all these different stories running amok in her head -
< < "Sorry" nets you nothing but death. Do you wish to die again? > >
Another wince. A very distinct no. Not again if she could ever help it. Naive, but truth.Status Wave: 2Attack Dmg: 3 Total Shadowlings taken out: 7 Recoveries left: 0 Charges: 2

Thane's chastisement was not something she wanted to listen to repeatedly. Not his, not more of Sam's if she could take it, and not more from the upper level lab techs that continually made her do menial runs. Not to say she wouldn't - she was a trainee and all, and peons were meant for that sort of stuff. But after her performance on the battlefield, Stormy wanted to prove she was more - like the others.
Not weak. Not just a girl who easily cried. But someone.
Thane seemed to understand, surprisingly. There was a soft sound in her head like a chuckle as she cut through more of the shadows. < < Let that fuel you, Hatchling, for you are more. You will be once I am finished with you. > >
She wasn't sure what to make of that, but it was supposed to be . . . comforting.Status Wave: 3Attack Dmg: 4 Total Shadowlings taken out: 11 Recoveries left: 0 Charges: 3

For once, she felt a little more synced with her partner. Maybe because of the fact that they both had something to prove, both of them hated to disappoint, and that their dynamic was of polarizing ends: a domineering critic, a soft-hearted dreamer. In theory they would drive each other crazy.
But not right now. Not when the end was so close. Their differences were put aside, weapon and wielder growing comfortable with one another as the greatsword sliced through more and more and the shadowlings. It was a step forward, a chance for them to realize that perhaps all she really needed was someone in command, someone with more confidence to tell her what to do.
And Thane filled that place with hungry talons and flashing eyes. Perhaps he had found the perfect human after all.Status Wave: 4Attack Dmg: 7 Total Shadowlings taken out: 18 Recoveries left: 0 Charges: 3

The end was near. One final batch of shadowlings rushed to stop her. Stormy faltered despite their good run as one leapt at her face, a small yelp escaping her -
< < Kill! Kill them! Do not stop now! > >
- Her weapon soared up, across - cleaved the thing in half. the adrenaline kicked in as more sought to do the same.
Sliced. Dead.
Slashed. Dead.
Thane roared with savage fury as he ate up their Fear, willing his wielder to release the pent up energy. But Stormy did not feel like there was an explosion needed this time - too risky, too painful. They had made it thus far on her own terms and she wanted to end it thus.
A final swing and the path was cleared. The trainee continued running long after the shadows stopped following, panting heavily as she leaned against a wall to catch her breath and wipe at her face. She did it. She did it on the first go.
< < Perhaps being so small and light has its advantages, > > the dracolich remarked. It was the closest to congratulations she would get.
Hugging an arm a shadow had tried to claw into, Stormy smiled to herself and exited into the portal, a soft "Yay," mumbled as she returned to the observation booth.
. . . Just to say she had finished it, but she wanted to try something. and then she hopped back into the portal.
The lab tech rolled his eyes because e-peen rights shouldn't amount to anything for chicks.Status Wave: 5Attack Dmg: 6 Total Shadowlings taken out: 24 Recoveries left: 0 Charges: 3

< < The course has been completed. What are you doing, Hatchling? > > There was a curious undercurrent in his voice that wasn't often there; her action had surrised even him.
I want to try. I want to get used to this attack you have so that maybe I won't be so scared.
< < Hmm. > > Thane had been keeping his Fear-frenzy in check now that they had won, but given the option of releasing it he was happy to oblige.
It didn't end well.
Good thing they'd completed the course first. Although the Hunters that came to tend to her were not terribly sympathetic about her attempt to rack up kills.Status Wave: 6 BECAUSE I CANAttack Dmg: nawp Total Shadowlings taken out: 24 Recoveries left: 0
