Just what exactly is the chance of someone dying from the Joining? I only know of three people that died from it; Daveth, Mhairi and the recruit from Alistair's Joining. And that's compared to the 8 people we see survive it ;the Warden, possibly Loghain, Anders, possibly Bethany/Carver, Sigrun, Oghren, Nathaniel and Velanna not to mention Alistair, Duncan, Riordan, Strouss and every other warden we meet. I'm not counting anyone only from the books because I haven't read them. According to the Dragon Age Wiki a lot of people die from the Joining but is that because of the sheer number of people that go through it or because it has a high mortality rate? Thoughts?

Though I've played every single Dragon Age game, I have yet to see the Bethany/Carver joining. It is unknown how so many die yet in the games we've only seen a few perish. This is off topic, but was anyone else pissed when you found out that Mhairi, no matter what, always dies.

I think the mortality rate is fairly high for the joining. Only ones with a strong body and soul are supposed to be able to survive. Due to storyline and stuff, they obviously had to make most characters survive or we wouldn't have any team members (in Awakening, we'd be so bare if some of them died haha).
I haven't read the books either so I do not know what happens there but when you are told about the Joining in the game, it is very risky and known to end more in death then survival.
As for Mhairi, I wasn't too upset. You don't have her in your group long enough for me to get attached to her. Also, I thought it was a nice twist to have her die. We were lead to believe she was going to be a team member but then doesn't survive.

This is a question I've been sitting on for some time now and this is the only way I've ever been able to explain it.Please bear with me.
Darkspawn blood is a poison that reacts with the users blood and is sometimes fatal. The reaction of the venom mixing with the blood causes the death. (from what I've gathered the mixture of the two types of blood causes the same reactions people who get blood transfusions that their body rejects which leads to death) It is not the strength of the person or their blood that keeps them alive. It's the immune system of the person. (Like when you get a cold and the person next to you doesn't get sick even though your contagious) Instead of the users body rejecting the darkspawn blood it mixes with it (like a blood transfusion that is successful) and the ones that die simply die because their blood rejects the darkspawn blood entering their blood streams. Now why we haven't heard of more people dieing from the joining I'm not sure, but it's like a 50/50 chance of dying plus Bioware wouldn't want us to get to pissy if they killed Anders during his joining cause he was the light to the dark situation or Oghren lol.
That's what I've gathered....Sorry if it makes no sense lol. I just got all three books for xmas if they detail anything we don't already know about the Joining I'll post it.

"join us brother and sisters. Join us in the shadows where we stand vigilant Join us as we carry the duty that cannot be forswan.(sp?) And should you perish, know that your sacrifice will not be forgotten. And that one day...we shall join you" -Alistair Before the joining ritual in Origins
Most of the people we see go trough the ritual are people that could be considered exceptionnal. I remember (Back long ago when I formed this guild. lol) that dragon age infos said that now the number of warden was lower not only because the darspawns were fewer but also because the heart of men were more weak. So I take it that someone with a high motivation + trained to fight have more chances to survive. I remember that one of the story writter of the first game on the very first gameplay demo was saying that the joining success was now around 25%. Then again, like I said, that was when they released the first footage of gameplay of origins.

Not naming the characters, but there is a good handful of Wardens in the book The Calling including something we never would expect to be possible.
