Hands shoved into the pockets of his new sweater, Jake wandered the outside of the island, looking up at the snow that was falling.
He didn't hear Chester as he reached out a hand, catching one of the snowflakes in his palm.
Before he could inspect it though, it evaporated.
Snow. What a curious thing. He had never really seen snow in his life, and had vague memories of it during the last portal missions, but right now, he wasn't sure why, but he felt... happy. Instead of making him cold and miserable, the snow brought about a sense of warmth and joy to him, a sort of emotion he hadn't felt for a long time.
Withdrawing his hands, he blew on them, and rubbed them to keep himself warm, watching with delight as his breath swirled in the air.
Somehow, it felt like it would be a great day.

Ofelia was practically outside rolling in the snow with her wounds from the fight long healed up thanks to the wonders that was Rue and her shield. The cold didn't even phase her as she jumped up and down in the snow. It frosted her head and shoulders, her red hair turning a muted shade of pale pink, and her tanned skin looked more like coffee mixed with cream than its usual hue. She was wearing the shirt that Melvin had given her (by proxy, since he didn't seem to ever want it back) and the same shorts she'd borrowed from the infirmary.
Her feet were actually bare and a little blue, not that it bothered her, and the more she ran around in the snow the less cold she felt. In fact she seemed to be breaking a small sweat and had to pause to catch her breath. The redhead may have been healed up on the outside but on the inside she needed a little more time. Puffs of smoke escaped from her mouth and floated about her head like a halo. It didn't take long for her to get a second wind and she whooped loudly as she went about prancing and dancing through the snow.
She thought she was alone. Ofelia was likely very wrong.

Jake closed his eyes as he slipped his hands back into his sweater pockets, lifting his head to feel the snowflakes fall on his face.
Such a pleasant feeling, enjoying the wonders of nature, the sound of-
... whooping?
Opening his eyes, he frowned at the figure tumbling about in the snow.
A flash of tell-tale red and... shorts.
And here Chester thought HE was under-dressed.
"Hey! Aren't you cold just wearing that?"

"Cold? Nope~" It was possible Ofelia wasn't cold because she was already numb or maybe it was because of all the running around she was doing. There was also a chance her shield was totally helping against the cold just like it did against the heat and everything else. "In fact Ah'm feelin' pretty good!" She twirled a bit on her toes, her hair shaking itself inside the loose ponytail she'd been wearing. It looked like a sea of red following her around, or perhaps a massive red flag. "What about yer hands an' feet? Are ya cold too, or is yer shield helpin'? Ah dunno why Ah'm not freezin', maybe s'cause Ah was runnin' around."
She did look a little...sweaty.

When she got closer, he noticed she wasn't even wearing shoes.
Oh wow, how did she not feel cold at all?
... How did she not have frostbite?
It was quite clear that she wasn't human
When she mentioned his hands and feet, he only looked down at the boots he normally wore. Well, his feet weren't cold at all, that's for sure.
And his hands...
He shook his head.
"Nah, this sweater pocket's pretty warm, I can keep my hands in here and they won't get cold."
Frowning, he took a closer look at Ofelia.
"You're all... kinda wet."

"Well it is snowin'. When snow gets on someone's body it tends ta melt, plus Ah been runnin' 'round an' havin' some fun." Ofelia touched her cheeks with her fingers before slapping them softly with her hands. "Ah've been cooped up inside fer so long Ah was feelin' unhappy, an' then they told me there was snow! Can ya believe it?"
She held her hands out to catch more flakes. "The last time Ah saw snow was in Halloween, an' now Ah get ta see it here an' feel it fallin' properly. It's like...sommin' Ah never knew 'bout." Ofelia looked at Jake and smiled, not grinned. "Where Ah grew up it was always too hot fer snow, so this is entirely new ta me. Didja see snow growin' up or is this a first fer ya as well?"
Perhaps it was the joy making Ofelia so chatty and happy...or it was just her usual nature expanded ten times by the snow.

He tilted his head at Ofelia, giving her a quizzical look.
It sounded strange that Halloween would get snow, but well... he guessed Halloween was close to Christmas, which meant cold enough for snow? He didn't really know.
"It's my first time with snow too, though I think I saw some before..." he recalled, reaching up to catch another snowflake.
"I'm not really used to the cold but I guess snow can be... nice."
His prolonged exposure to the JOY outside had already affected him a decent amount.
The moment it wore off, he would probably regret ever talking to Ofelia in such a casual manner.

Ofelia would remember all of this and not regret anything. Jake was always pretty special to her, not that he'd understand any of it from how she treated him (downright horrible, that is). It was like having a younger sibling who fought back tooth and nail and it only endeared him to her more and more. Too bad the feeling wasn't at all mutual or else both of them probably wouldn't feel so lonely at Deus. Of course neither of them would likely admit they were lonely but that was beside the point in many, many a way.
"Wanna build a snowman? Ah've never built one b'for so Ah think it would be fun." The lack of movement was making her a little chilly, she needed to get up and going, and Jake seemed interested enough in the snow that perhaps they could do something together. It was better than working alone and being silly, plus she could take a picture and have something to put in her room. As someone who was approaching hunter she was entirely too neat in her possession. If she were to die there'd be nothing left behind and that was a little sad. "An' maybe after the snowman, a snowball fight? That'd be kinda fun, yeah."

Having never experienced what it was like having siblings or well, living in a functional family, Ofelia was probably the closest thing to an older sister he would ever have, not that... he would ever admit or acknowledge until much, much later.
In the meantime though, his eyes only lit up at her offer and clasped his hands together excitedly.
"That sounds fun!"
There was a pause, and he scratched his cheek sheepishly.
"I, uh, never really made one before either, having never dealt with snow and such, so... I'm not sure I know how..."
Snow...man?
Snowball?
Jake was a deprived child who never understood the meaning of fun.

"Well Ah've never done anythin' like it either so we can learn together, okay?" she looked around at the mounds of snow and grabbed some in her hands. It stung at her fingers, which were turning a pale shade of blue, but she ignored it and crushed the snow into a tightly packed ball. "Ah'll make the base fer the snowman, ya make the head? Basically jus' roll a small ball 'round in the snow until we think it's big 'nough an' then stack it? Jus' don't make it too hard ta lift."
Ofelia started at her task, dropping the ball she made and rolling it around a few times. It got larger as she went, heavier to roll, and eventually she just stopped pushing and started putting snow around the base to make sure it'd stay upright. Her breath curled around her face as she worked, and she looked at Jake with a grin. "All on ya now." The idea of what to decorate with seemed a bit far from her mind at the moment.[A.V.] omg they are too cute together omg. also i sent you a gift > ____ > *ninja* check yer minis

Watching Ofie with rapt interest, he let out a gasp as the ball of snow she was rolling grew larger and larger.
Ooh, so THAT's how you make a snowball.
Following suit, he rolled up his sleeves and picked up some snow, crushing it in his hands until it formed a solid ball, shivering at the coldness.
He bent down and scooped up more snow, packing it onto the snowball until it grew in size, and when it was about the size of a human head (albeit quite deformed), he hefted it up and showed it to her.
"Is this ok?"Rown ikr?? I love happy!Jake. o u o And yes! OMG I will cuddle them all. <333333333333

The redhead wasn't going to admit she was starting to get cold, not at all. "After ya get it on Ah guess we can think 'bout decoratin' it? any ideas on yer end?" Ofelia was sadly lacking in creativity when it came to things outside of baking.
This was probably why she wasn't an artist or a writer or anything that involved thinking outside of the box.[A.V.] <3 ofie just loves jake, period. he's kinda stuck with her which is gonna be the best thing for both of them eventually > ___ >

Approval! Yay!
He grinned and placed it on top of the base that Ofelia had rolled.
So a snowman was... two balls of snow stuck together, with one ball being bigger than the other.
Somehow, he thought it was supposed to look a bit... different.
Oh well. He only shrugged and followed her instructions, patting snow around the bottom so that the "head" stay put, and when done, pulled back to blow on his hands. He had almost lost feeling in them.
But I didn't bring them with me.
Chester sighed.
At Ofelia's question, he frowned.
"Decorations?"
Crossing his arms, he stared at the snowman.
"Oh! How about a-" he looked down to realize he didn't have his sash with him.
"Oh, well, um... a scarf?"

"Oh, good idea." The redhead pulled the scarf she was assigned from around her neck, showing off the lovely scars that dotted a tanned throat. She wrapped it around the 'neck' of the snowman and tied it off, looking to admire her handy work. "What else goes on 'em? Like Ah said Ah've never made one so Ah'm jus' kinda wingin' it from here on out." Jake had also said he'd never made one but whatever Ofelia was free to forget when she was feeling the wonderful effects of JOY.
Perhaps they could like...place their weapons in the hands of the snowman? They didn't make arms though so that would be hard and a little more than ridiculous. Ofelia also wasn't sure that Rue would enjoy being on something else other than her own hands but since the weapon wasn't talking there was no way to properly know. There had to be other things to add though and so the sun hunter went looking around for something she could use. "While ya think'a sommin' ya can add Ah'll look for sticks fer arms. A snowman wit'out arms is kinda sad." Anything without arms was sad.

If Jake wasn't so immersed with the building of the snowman, he might of shot worried looks at Ofelia's exposed scars, but at the moment, he was only pondering on how to bring it more to life.
"Um... maybe a face?"
Snowmen had faces, right? Since they were snow... men.
Yah, ok, no, he had no idea what he was doing.
When Ofelia mentioned arms, he brightened up.
"Oh, I know!"
She might not of used her weapons, but that didn't stop him from using his.
Grinning, his hand went to his belt, and the tonfas were summoned.
Sticking a handle onto each side, he stepped back and admired his work.
The runes on the weapons flickered
A faint memory of being lodged in a shadow creature's eye flickered in Jake's head.
The death trainee only put his hands on his hips and grinned.
It was a masterpiece.
