After everything that happened, Sailor Irene had no idea why she was bothering to patrol. She had decided not to fight anyone, and was going to make sure that she held herself to that decision. If she wasn't fighting, then there was no point to being a senshi. She knew that, but still felt like she needed to go out there and do something, anything, to make amends. Inaction prevented her from making things worse, but it wouldn't make anything better either. She couldn't hide from everything forever.
Still, she made no attempt to contact any of her teammates to come with her. After what she had done, she couldn't face Iris, or anyone else.
It was a quiet evening, which gave Irene plenty of opportunity to reflect on what she had been doing. Which was not what she wanted, but she supposed it was better than continuing with her self-destructive behavior. Now that she wasn't fighting, things at least couldn't get any worse, or so she believed.

Zippeite was lurking. That was probably the best word for it. Suking was better, since he wasn't waiting for anything in particular. He was just sitting on a a wall, legs dangling down to the sidewalk while he scowled and tried to figure out what he was doing, why he was bothering going out at night, and why he cared so much.
Well, no, he knew why he was out and that was just because he didn't want to be in. Home was unbearable. And the Negaverse still represented a glimpse of hope of escaping from that terribleness when he powered up.
Except nothing great happened when he did. He didn't make anything great happen but he wasn't the type to admit his own fault in things.
And he felt an energy signature of a senshi. Ugh. Even when she came into view she disgusted him. Doves? Seriously? Like her appearance could reek purity even more with that obnoxious Order aura.
"What the hell is a little girl like you doing out alone?" He snapped. She actually looked to be around his age, but it didn't matter. Actually it did, and it just made him madder.

Irene froze. The voice had caught her completely by surprise. She had been so focused on her own problems that she hadn't even noticed the chaotic energy flaring so close to her. That was bad. Iris would probably yell at her for patrolling without paying attention. No, thinking about Iris right then was too painful, and there was someone else who needed her attention.
Squaring her shoulders, Irene turned to face the boy who'd called out to her. He was just what she had been looking for last week- a member of the Negaverse, someone not too strong, someone she could maybe take down on her own. If she had met him then instead of now, maybe things would have gone differently. She sighed and clasped her hands together behind her back. Despite what she was thinking, she wasn't going to fight him. Not now, after everything she had done.
That didn't mean she would just take his abuse, though. "Excuse me? Little girl? I'm probably taller than you are!" At least, in her heels she was. Maybe. Unless either of them had a tape measure, there was no way to know for sure. "And anyway," she added loftily, "I can take care of myself, I'll have you know."
Antagonizing someone she had no intention to fight wasn't the smartest move, but at least she wasn't blindly attacking anymore.

Zippeite scrunched his nose at her retort. She was trying to act tough. Well, so was he, but her making the same effort annoyed him for some reason. He hopped down from his perch and faced her, unable to hide the full scope of indignity he felt when he looked at her. She was his age, on his level, on the other side, and in his mind, she was all these things he wasn't. She wasn't fair.
"Can you?" He asked with clear threat in his voice, summoning his weapon and gripping the hilt with one hand until his knuckles turned white. "Because I bet I'm stronger." He wanted her to back up. Be afraid, show a little fear. Be lesser for just one second.

As the lieutenant jumped down, Irene instinctively took a step back. She did not want to be in this guy's personal space. Or anywhere near him, really. If she wasn't going to fight, then what was she doing there? Looking for an obstacle she couldn't surmount? Proving to herself that she was still in control of her actions? Trying to succumb to temptation? What was it that had brought her out there?
He spoke again, and something appeared in his hand. Irene squinted, saw what it was, and giggled. "At least I don't rely on toys to defend myself." Really, this would have been the perfect time to back down, to admit that she wasn't as capable as she said she was. Except that was never an option. Even when she had promised herself to stay out of the fighting, she couldn't let someone call her weak. If she did, she truly would be.

Zippeite twitched. It wasn't his fault it was a toy, all lieutenants had mundane items. He wanted to defend it, but he wanted to lash out at her even more. "And what do you rely on? Hoping no one wants to beat on a little girl in a miniskirt?"
Something shifted in his grip on the hilt while his stomach twisted. "Well, I don't feel like that. Looking at you makes me sick. You're disgusting."
And with that, he lunged forward, swinging the toy in one smooth motion like it was a baseball bat and his main target was her face.

Now why did he have to go and ask a question like that? The truth was that Irene didn't really know what she relied on, especially now. She had gone out to beat up youma with the confidence that because she had been at the whole senshi thing for a while, she could do it. That assumption had been shattered beyond repair. Yet she was still out there, talking to a guy she would have fought just a couple of days earlier. Why?
She had no answer, so naturally he couldn't have one either. Not that he seemed to mind. Irene's eyes widened, and she automatically leaped backwards. While their discussion could hardly be called genial, she really hadn't been expecting things to come to blows, and the fact that he was physically attacking her was rather shocking.
"Hey, that's enough now." She folded her arms and looked at the lieutenant crossly. "Listen, I'm sorry if I offended you. How about you go your way, I go mine, and we just skip the whole fighting part? Because it won't make much difference either way." Irene had promised herself not to fight, but she also doubted her ability to seriously hurt him, even if she wanted to. She didn't think he'd be able to seriously hurt her, either; if there was one bit of fighting she was pretty decent at, it was dodging. So what was the point?

Zippeite stumbled forward when his first strike was met by her bouncing backwards. Like he wasn't annoyed already. He paused, and stared at her when she tried to look unamused and play peacekeeper all of the sudden.
And he only sneered.
"It'll make a difference to me," He said, standing upright and rolling his shoulders. "Trust me, hurting you makes so much difference to me."
And with that he went at her again, this time a little faster, and a littler harsher. He wanted to crush this b***h.

This was bad. Very very very bad. And, as was the case with most bad things that were plaguing her lately, Irene only had herself to blame. She had known better than to bait an enemy who was clearly on edge, but she had done it anyway. How could she have expected the result to be anything other than a full-on attack?
In his need to harm her, to come out on top of somebody else no matter what the personal cost, she saw herself from a couple of days ago, and that scared her. How had she let herself become like this crazy guy? What had she been telling herself, to make it all seem like it was okay? No, more than okay, like it was the best option she had, rather than the worst.
What kind of lies was this guy feeding himself, in order to wind up just like her?
"Even when it ends up as a draw? Because it will." As soon as she said that, Irene felt a sharp pain in her left shoulder. She hadn't expected him to speed up like that, and while she'd managed to move enough to make his blow miss her face, she wasn't able to avoid it entirely.
The pain made her angry, but she clamped down on that feeling quickly. Anger was bad. She wasn't allowed to be angry, even with someone who was purposefully hurting her. She just had to be quicker than he was next time, that was all.

Zippeite grinned when he felt his toy make contact and in balancing backwards he snapped a foot up to see if he could drive his boot into her in the same motion.
Either way, he ended up bouncing back a few steps and readjusting his grip, prepping for another swing. "A draw? Really? Because it looks like I'm already coming out on top. What are you even the senshi of, anyway? Pigeons? Pillow feathers? Psh."
And then he charging at her again. He had no intention to stop.

Irene was totally unprepared for a fight. Probably because she had come out with the resolution to not end up in one. For a moment she questioned God, the Universe, and everything, wondering why she couldn't have ended up meeting this guy when she was desperate for a battle. Why she had to meet him now that she had sworn not to fight. These were the wrong questions, and she was vaguely aware of that, but it wasn't exactly the right time to wax philosophical.
His foot caught her in the shin, making her stumble but not fall. At least she had learned how to walk in her shoes without maiming herself. This was the part where she was supposed to talk him down, or something, but his insults hurt. "Of course you're winning right now," she retorted. "I'm not even trying to hurt you."
What was with this guy? What would it take to make him stop? How could he be more determined than she was? As he came towards her again, Irene found herself charging to meet him. "And for your information, I'm the senshi of peace!"
Which might have been a more effective affirmation had it not been accompanied by a punch, aimed at his stomach.

"Well, there's your problem then," Zippeite cackled. He was hurting her, he could see that he was, and as much as part of him hated it, there was a much larger force inside of him that not only enjoyed it, but promised some measure of satisfaction if he could hurt her just a bit more.
But then she reacted, finally. She stopped being such a ridiculously easy target and punched him.
He didn't even hear her announce she was the senshi of peace, he was just stupefied by the fact she hit back, leaving himself open for another blow.

"Oh?" Irene took another swing at him, grinning now that she was the one in control. "I don't know." Another swing. "It seems like you're the one in trouble." And another. It didn't even matter to her if they connected or not, as long as she was the one on the offensive. "What's wrong, it's not fun when you're not winning anymore?"
This was good. This was what she had been looking for. And while on some level she still knew that this wasn't what she truly wanted, she was too satisfied with her momentary triumph to care.

It only took another punch to get Zippeite to shake it off. They were pretty easily matched, physically, and he had a weapon. So he was still pretty sure he could take her, even if she was going to do more than sit there and take it.
With a growl and reignited rage that she had actually dared to touch him, he gripped the hilt of his lightsaber with both hands and shot at her with all that he had in him.

Irene had been so focused on her offense that she couldn't put up a proper defense quickly enough. The lightsaber hit her squarely in the stomach, and she stumbled back, wrapping her arms around her abdomen. That hurt! But it also made her stop for a moment, and allowed the past few moments to replay in her head. She had come out specifically not to fight, and had been taking pleasure in doing exactly what she had promised herself she wouldn't do.
What might have happened if he hadn't hit her right then? Irene didn't even want to think about it. She was too ashamed of herself, for letting her behavior lapse so badly. "I'm sorry," she told her opponent, wincing as she stood up straight again. "I'm so sorry... I shouldn't even be out here."
