Shangyue was the first born in the first litter of Selene and Fuu, it awarded him the second place in the line of succession for the throne though chances were he would be quite old before that ever happened since his parents were still in line and young themselves. Nevertheless, he knew his place and he was very enthusiastic about it. He tried to follow his parents around but was often brushed away, he could have some freedom, not sit through lectures and lessons explaining absolutely everything. He had more time.

But he still had so much to learn, even about the basics, his enthusiasm didn't stop just because he couldn't follow around his parents. Though he stayed near the center of the pride, he happily chose to explore on his own and try to get a feel for how things worked. It was late in the afternoon but it would be a little while before the world became dark and the moon appeared.. so he was in no hurry.

Sitting in the grass, his brown eyes narrowed, he looked around for an interesting target.

The beige lioness was going to and fro across the pride as her duties dictated, bringing meat from the hunt to those who needed it and were privileged enough to not have to go fetch it, then returning for more. It was busy work, in some ways, but Halili didn't mind. She always loved to wander through the pride, meeting people and conversing with anyone who would let her.

She was on her way back to get another load when she saw the purple cub sitting nearby. He must be one of the little Princes - Shangyue or Shuiyue. If she remembered correctly, it was Shangyue who was dominantly purple and his brother who was white with purple markings.

So she smiled at the boy as she came near. "Good afternoon Prince Shangyue." Here went hoping she'd remembered correctly!

Though he was watching the lioness from a distance, he couldn't place any identifying information to her form. She looked familiar, but he couldn't quite place why. She wasn't a family member he couldn't remember, he could tell that much, and she couldn't be a priest or he'd know that was why she looked familiar. So he had no idea.. but she knew his name! He puffed up his chest, feeling important.

"Hello," he said, staying exactly where he had planted himself but looking genuinely curious, "Who are you?"

"My name is Halili," the lioness replied with a smile for the boy. She came closer - the food would wait, or it would be handled by others. It wasn't as if they were so understaffed that her taking the time to talk to one cub, regardless of who he was, would make a huge difference. Actually, in her experience, as long as the job got done and no one was angry about it, things were fairly laidback.

After all, it wasn't their fault how much or how little of the Great Lion's eye was open when they were born.

"I am one of the many low class workers in the pride," she offered as an additional bit of information to answer who she was.

"Halili," he repeated thoughtfully, trying to determine if the name would make her familiarity any more obvious. It had a lot of Ls, like grandma's name.. but otherwise it seemed pretty unique. So he happily decided to move on from his mental guessing game-- just as she revealed that she was part of the low class. He looked surprised first but then thoughtful as he looked her up and down.

"So, you're a slave?"

He didn't sound sure but he had never really spoken to a slave before. He had low class family members, he knew that. He would probably even recognize some of them. But he'd never been on his own in an interaction with a slave before. There was nobody around to tell him how he was supposed to act but, luckily, that made him cautious.

"Well, yes," Halili admitted. "But I usually just refer to my class because it sounds nicer," she told the cub, determined to be cheerful even so. There were some in the higher classes who were dead set on snubbing those beneath them, especially slaves. The lioness didn't think that Selene would raise her children that way, but it was always possible that they'd develop their own opinions based on attitudes of people they were exposed to.

"It's a lot of fun - I get to go all over the pride and meet just about everybody!" she went on.

"It does?" he asked, wrinkling his nose at her assertion that it sounded nicer just to say she was part of the low class. He was too young to understand all the complexities of language and how it can be used to serve various purposes. In his mind, everything was much simpler than that. There was no reason to avoid calling Halili a slave if that was what she was.

"Yeah?" he said, sound rather skeptical of the idea of slavery being fun, "Who's the most fun pride member you've met, then?" Her answer would help him decide if she was really having fun or if she was just strange.

The lioness had to think about that one. Who was the most fun...hmmm...a very difficult question. Halili had to consider that very carefully. At last she smiled.

"Well, I'd have to say Hamaniya. She's a Lady, a yellow lioness with wing markings on her back, in case you haven't met her yet," the beige lioness replied cheerily. "She's quite nice and lots of fun!"

"What about you? Who's the most fun person you've met?" Halili asked, turning the query back on Shangyue.

Just a lady was the most interesting person Halili had ever met? Nice and fun, sure, but.. that didn't sound terribly exciting. Though it did make him curious about Hamaniya, there had to be something more than she could explain properly if she was really the most fun person to someone who claimed to meet almost everybody.

His disbelief showed but it turned to thoughtfulness as he considered the question when it was turned back on him. Most fun.

"Grandpa," he said finally, nodding, "He's king."

Halili supposed it wasn't a surprising answer. No cub was going to pick his parents and his grandfather was a fairly interesting one on the basis of being the King. So she nodded in response.

"I can see that he has a very important position. But King Thoth doesn't strike me as the most...fun...person in the pride." Not saying the boy was wrong to pick his grandfather. Just that even if he'd been someone she knew well, Halili wouldn't have picked him.

He was very pleased with his choice, grinning while it seemed Halili was going to agree with him-- but then scowling as soon as she verbalized her doubts that he was any fun. He spent a few seconds looking huffy and indignant before he stood up and demonstrated maybe he did understand using language for effect.

"What do you know," he said, "You're just a slave."

Grandpa was fun and important, that was why he was his favorite. He could have told her how a yellow lady didn't seem very fun to him, either, but he didn't. And now he would make sure he got last word: by walking away.

Halili rolled her shoulders in a shrug as she watched the boy walk away. She hoped that he was taught that rank did not make anyone any better or worse than anyone else.

Hopefully.
