"Poe!" Syrrin groused in irritation as the nervous filly jumped at an imagined sound and knocked into him causing him to drop the herbs he had been carrying. The dried plants scattered about the ground like leaves on the wind. They were going to take forever to pick up!

"Look what you made me do! These are going to take forever to pick up! I don't know why you have to be so jumpy all the time, in all your life nothing terrible has happened to you has it? Has it?" He asked the filly, wheeling about to glare at her in demand for an answer. Honestly..Lapin was annoying with all of her running around and endless questions but Poe, Poe drove him absolutely nuts with her cringing and crying and slow careful steps...I mean honestly it was just absurd! She had no reason to be frightened all the time and now, by the time he got those herbs picked up, they'd be so far behind scheduale today that he might as well kiss his plans for an afternoon nap good-bye.

What was that? Poe's eyes widened and she jumped sideways, staring off into the woods with wide eyes. Unfortunately in her distress she had knocked into Syrrin and by the time she turned back to say sorry he was already yelling at her for making him drop the herbs they were supposed to be storing in mother's cache. Cringing away from her angry older brother, ears plasted to her head in distress as she cowered Poe tried to smooth things over. "Sorry! So sorry, I didn't mean to, it was an accident..I heard something in the woods.." She started to explain but let her voice trail off as it became apparent the Syrrin wasn't listening..or didn't care about what she was saying.

Hunkering down with lowered head Poe decided to just wait the yelling out, Syrrin always blew up like this and really it was best to just let him get it out so that they could move on, besides if she argued with him (like that would ever happen) then he might get really angry and Poe hated it..just hated it when others were angry with her!

Fairbreeze had been wandering through the trees with no real destination in mind. He was a bit bored but his siblings were off doing something so he had decided to simply wander around the forest since it always had something interesting to see on any given day. Of course what he wasn't expecting to come across was Syrrin yelling at Poe...well actually that seemed to be a common occurrence in the herd. If he wasn't yelling at Poe then he was yelling at Lapin, heck sometimes Syrrin yelled at Fairbreeze or his siblings. It seemed the stallion was only happy when napping. Coming out of the trees Fairbreeze's eyes swept over the scene. There was Poe laying down looking scared, something she usually did, and Syrrin was standing there yelling at her with herbs scattered all around them. It didn't take much to figure out what had happened, plus he had been close enough to hear their entire conversation - if it could be called that.

"It's my fault." He admitted stepped further into the clearing. "I was wondering through the forest and she must have heard me." His gaze swiveled towards Poe and he stepped closer to her. "I'm sorry Poe, I didn't mean to frighten you." But then he looked up at Syrrin, and whether it was because he was overprotective of his own sister or perhaps because he was bigger than the Usdia stallion - but most likely it was because he tended to state things that others already knew he said. "You shouldn't yell at her like that, you know she's easily scared and yelling at her isn't going to help the situation any. It's not wonder she doesn't like helping you, all you do is yell. You know you're not very pleasant to be around." It was bad enough having to deal with Syrrin from time to time, and Fairbreeze generally kept his distance from the rude stallion but now that he was face to face with him he wanted nothing more than to stick up for Poe and put Syrrin in his place.

Syrrin wasn't expecting someone else to come along, he'd been too busy yelling at Poe to notice the arrival of someone else and so when the sudden voice startled him he got even angrier and wheeled to glare at the meddlesome colt. Ah yes..this was the sassy one who always said what he thought. Disrespectful little beast. "Excuse me?" Syrrin stated with an arched brow while he drew himself up to his full height - sure the colt might be taller then he was but that was mostly leg and Syrrin almost certainly outweighed him. "Who do you think your talking too? You need to respect your elders colt! What were you doing lurking around in the woods anyways? Trying to steal yourself some treats out of the herbs? Wait until I tell your mother!" He threatened. Most foals were afraid enough of getting into trouble with their parents that such a threat was typically enough to send them packing.

He still couldn't believe that his grandfather had even allowed these Soquili to stay -oh sure one of them had saved Olo but that required a heartfelt thank you not a full on invitation to the family! When he was older and took over the herd (and he planned to be the one in charge someday) he would make a few changes.

Poe had closed her eyes and was trying to will the situation away when she heard Fairbreeze speak up - she liked Fairbreeze, he always said what he thought but he was never mean and so when he arrived she opened her eyes and even went so far as to gain her feet and creep around behind him to hide from Syrrin and his anger. "It's okay. I shouldn't have jumped" She told the colt in a quiet, barely heard voice. Of course Fairbreeze then went on to do what he always did, and told Syrrin off. Oh boy. Poe closed her eyes again and tried to envision a nice quiet meadow..someplace sunny and safe and warm..but no matter how hard she tried to will such a place into existence it wasn't happening and as she expected Syrrin voice quickly came back, the anger in his voice apparent as he told Fairbreeze off. "Oh..don't make him any madder Fair!" Poe found herself pleading quietly to the colt "He'll get you in trouble!"

He should have backed down, hell he should have just minded his own business since he knew how Syrrin's anger could be, but he had gotten himself into this and he wasn't about to back away just yet. Call him foolish but Fairbreeze was willing to take on the brunt of Syrrin's anger if it meant Poe was safe. "You may be my elder but you don't act respectful yourself and therefore I see no reason to treat you with respect until you treat others well. And I wasn't lurking in the forest trying to steal the herbs, I was out for a walk and simply found you two here when you started yelling." The threat to tell his mother made him pause for a second. Sure he didn't like getting in trouble but he doubted mother would get him in trouble for sticking up for Poe, all he would need to do is mention how Syrrin was yelling at the filly and all punishment would be forgotten.

"Wait until I tell your mother!" He retorted back quickly. Syrrin wouldn't want to get in trouble and Fairbreeze knew that if Synestra found out the other sibling was yelling at Poe and causing trouble again then the mare would step in and discipline her son. Turning his head Fairbreeze looked back at Poe hiding behind him. "It's okay Poe, I can hand his anger, I just don't want to see him yelling at you anymore, you don't deserve to be treated like that." No one did really but it seemed that Poe always got the majority of Syrrin's angers because of her caution and at times jumpy ways. Fairbreeze returned his gaze to Syrrin and stared down at the stallion.

Syrrin rolled his eyes a little bit - man this generation of Soquili were certainly a bit on the wimpy side, a little bit of yelling and they all became unglued. It was sad really, the way these foals had been coddled - his siblings included..it was probably just because they were the babies of the family. Even Lapin got away with murder and that little filly was always in trouble. "Stop being so sensitive." He told the colt "It wasn't like I was kicking her or biting her..jeez, a bit of tough love is exactly what she needs..you people run around coddling her because she's scared of everything..well guess what? That's just making her worse, she needs to learn how to stand up for herself! Grow a backbone!" He went on, putting a bit of importance into his voice so that the colt would fall in line and believe him.

"I'm older then you kid, trust me if she goes through life being this frightened of everything she's going to have a horrible life!" He went on, puffing up his chest and lifting his head in an imperious way. Really..foals these days I'll tell you! Why when he had foals he would make sure they grew up good and strong, proper little stallions and mares! Why he wasn't even afraid of being told on..he was an adult..he could handle it! Or at least that's what he told himself, even though the thought of his mother coming along did make him wilt just a little bit.

Poe continued to cower, ears flattened against her head and head hanging as she stared miserably at the ground. This was all her fault..why if she hadn't jumped then the herbs wouldn't have been dropped and none of this would have happened. The herbs were starting to fly away on the wind too - so now everyone was probably going to get horribly sick and die over the winter because there were not enough herbs to save them!

Even Fair's attempts to sooth her did little to help, he was probably going to be one of the ones who died. With her luck the only ones that would survive would be her and Syrrin. It was about this time that she managed to pick up on one of Syrrin's comments...he was right, she was going to have a horrible life! Poe started to tremble and cry.

It took every ounce of restraint not to shift or change his expression one bit. He hadn't expected Syrrin to say something like that and while he hated to admit it, and never outwardly would, he wondered if the small stallion was right. What if them being protective of Poe because she was shy and jumpy would only make it worse for her in the end? Could they be causing her harm without even realizing it? Even if that was the case, he didn't think Syrrin's version of tough love was the right approach either. Perhaps there could be a middle ground, where they still protected Poe but also gave her a small dose of tough love to make sure she wasn't worse off as an adult. He couldn't say anything to that effect right now even if he wanted to, even if it was normally what he would do in this situation. He was well known among the herd for saying the obvious thing and analyzing things for others even if they had figured things out themselves.

"You may not be kicking or biting her but do you think yelling at her constantly will help either? Cant you see you scare her just as much as everything else does? Oloneric would never treat her the way you do, he at least understands compassion and sympathy." His ears flicked as he heard Poe begin to cry. This would only make it worse, especially with Syrrin spouting off about how everything would destroy her life if they kept it up. He couldn't let her cry no more than he could let Syrrin yell at her. Turning his back to the stallion Fairbreeze lowered his head and nuzzled Poe gently. "It's alright Poe, you are going to be fine." He lowered his voice so that only she could hear him. "Don't listen to him, he is wrong and we both know it. Please stop crying, I don't like seeing you upset. Come on, I'll help you collect the herbs and then I'll play with you, or we can just sit quietly, whatever you want. But I'm not going to leave you alone with your brother." Giving her a slight nudge he stepped away and scooped up one of the wayward herbs before going to grab another.

Oh wow..okay so this kid was as soft as his parents, look at him coddling her because she was crying! Crying over nothing! Absolutely nothing. "See what your doing!" He fussed at the colt "She's blubbering over absolutely nothing and your wasting time trying to soothe her, just ignore her..let her stand there and cry all day - eventually she'll figure out how pointless it is." He stated.

But of course the colt wouldn't listen to him because he was too soft hearted. When Poe grew up and had to rely on everyone else for her entire life and got run over by every wayward jerk to walk by because she didn't know how to stand up for herself..well.then they'd learn. "Fine! Fine you can babysit her then! Make sure those herbs get picked up!" He finally yelled before stalking off muttering to himself about 'foals and bleeding hearts'

Poe didn't really hear much of what Syrrin was saying - she was too busy crying. It was probably a good thing however as much of what he said would have just upset her further. It wasn't until Fair was trying to calm her down that she noticed Syrrin had left. "you..you'll help me pick up the herbs?" She finally sniffed, her sobs calming down "We need to pick up the herbs because if we don't the herd will get sick and we'll all die over the winter." She told him in a trembly but convicted voice. It was clear the little filly completely believed that this would happen unless they collected the herbs..ALL of the herbs..which was likely going to be difficult as many of them had started to blow away.

Of course there was another problem too "Are we going to get in trouble for being alone without an adult? Are you allowed to be out alone..I know your bigger but won't you get in trouble..maybe we should find an adult..but then we'd have to leave the herbs and we won't ever find them again and the herd with DIE." Gosh..what a problem! Poe wasn't sure what to do and she started to sniff again in her uncertainty.

Fairbreeze was more than glad when Syrrin decided to leave. So what if the stallion was right and that they were making it worse, seeing Poe cry broke his heart and even if it was possibly the wrong thing to do he wasn't about to let Syrrin win. At least not yet, he needed to think more on this, maybe ask his parents in a non direct way what was best to do and then make a solid decision for himself. Letting out a soft sigh Fairbreeze grabbed another one of the scattered herbs before looking over at Poe. "Of course I'll help. Mom and dad always tell me that it is good to help out, we are a part of this herd after all so if I can help I will." And then she said something that shocked him. He knew Poe was scared and too things differently than others but when she said that the herd would die if they didn't pick up all the herbs it made him pause.

Damn, maybe Syrrin was right. All that coddling had made her paranoid. Super paranoid as the filly rambled on about needing an adult but not being able to leave the herbs. Boy, this was a messy situation he had stumbled upon. Tough love. The words bounced around his mind but he wasn't quite sure how to go about it. The only example of it he'd seen was from Syrrin and that stallion was a jerk.

"No one is going to die Poe." He told her in a voice that he hoped sounded encouraging but slightly forceful. "And we don't need an adult, my parents trust me to be alone this close to the herd. We have each other. We will be fine." He realized the more he spoke the more he reverted back to his old way of assuring her at every turn. This tough love thing would be harder than he thought. With a shake of his head he picked up another herd. He wanted to say 'Let's get these picked up before the wind blows them away' but instantly knew that would send her off in a panicking cry once more. "Let's see who can pick up more herbs." He suggested to her, maybe a bit of a game tied into the task would help. He dropped the herbs he had collected on the ground, not wanting to start with any to begin with. "Ready," he said glancing at her, "set, go!" He would of course make sure she won, because he didn't have it in his heart to do anything mean to her, but the fact was they did need to get these herbs picked up and get back home before any of them got in trouble.

With the departure of Syrrin, Poe relaxed just a little bit more..Fair was far less likely to get upset with her even if she did make a mistake and he was ever turning her mistake into a game at that. Although she was a quiet foal Poe was still a foal and having the chore turned into a game was appealing. It only took a couple of moments before she was throwing herself - carefully - into the game and feeling a great deal better.

Much sooner then she had expected Poe looked around to notice that the herbs (at least those that hadn't blown away, she still felt bad about that) were all picked up. "I think we got them all" She told Fair quietly, able to talk easily because her tentacles gave her a bit of an advantage when it came to things like this. "I guess we should get them to the stockpile. Thank you for helping me.."
