In a small stream, shallow enough that only a fool or a cub could drown, stood a white lion. The water flowing away from him carried long red ribbons as he meticulously cleaned every wound the obnoxious black lion had inflicted. It wasn't that Yareha was fastidious all the time, it was more that the entire encounter had left a sour taste in his mouth and he sought to wash that away by cleaning up his wounds and tending to them as best he could alone.

Well, not completely alone. Latitare was nearby, perched in one of the scrawny trees that accompanied the stream on its journey to some larger body of water. But a bird would be of little use in licking wounds until they clotted, or cleaning stray droplets out of thick white fur.

Still, the whole thing irked him. What right did these stranger lions have to know all about him and his past? Yareha had thought all that left behind within the Mwezi'Johari, banished for his crimes but able to leave them behind with his former life. But apparently the Great Lion wished to punish him further, by putting these visionaries in his path.

Not to mention the blasphemy they spouted, claiming to be offspring of gods. What nonsense!

Thaddaeus and Asante were having a quiet, leisurely day, taking a break from energetic games and intrusions on the goings-on of rogues they happened to pass by. It just so happened they were walking opposite the flow of the very stream Yareha was cleaning his wounds from but it was a while before they noticed the scent of blood, any strange streaks in the water or even the pale figure of the lion himself standing in the water. They were chit-chatting about where they might move onto next now that they had been in the area for a while when the proximity of an injured stranger became apparent.

"Can you smell that?"

Asante was wading through the water and thinking about where they had been, where they were and where they ought to go. After meeting Thaddaeus' mother, she was starting to miss her own. Her eyes were on her feet most of the walk, occasionally looking up when speaking to her mate. When his tone changed and he asked a strange question, she did look up-- and she noticed the distinct shape of Yareha in the distance.

"Look," she said, nodding to point Thaddaeus' attention to him.

Slowing down to a stop, Thaddaeus followed his mate's nod when she pointed where to find the source of the smell of blood. It was hard to see what was going on from a distance but it didn't seem like a recent hunt, even from where they stood.

"Huh," he said, moving over so Asante could get out of the stream and picking up the pace to investigate.

Asante hopped out of the water, shook off her paws and jogged to catch up to Thaddaeus. When they got closer, the blood in the water became apparent and she was glad she was on the ground now. They were definitely close enough to be noticed by now, unless the bleeding stranger was focused on his task.

"Hey!" she called out.

The sudden voice startled Yareha into turning, splashing noisily in his surprise. Two lions were heading towards him on the bank, a male and female, and it was the latter which had called out to him.

The white lion blinked, anger and frustration momentarily forgotten in the shock of having two strangers happen upon him. At least their body language was open and unreserved, not looking for a fight like the black lion had been. Also he guessed them to be lovers, if not mates, from how they stood together.

"Uh...hello there," he responded at last, aware that they were waiting for him to react. Unfortunately, he hadn't been able to think of anything the least bit intelligent to say.

Thaddaeus didn't speak after Asante did, waiting for the stranger to respond before doing so. He made no effort to hide his curiosity and concern as he looked the injured lion up and down. He had obviously been in a fight, this didn't look like any hunting wounds he had seen. It could have been a fight over a meal but not with the meal itself.

"Are you alright?" he asked.

Asante did a much better job not staring at the wounds, keeping her gaze instead on Yareha's face. She was reassured seeing that he didn't appear to be dying because of his injuries but that only made her more nosy. She wanted to question him but Thaddaeus beat her to the most important one and so she stayed quiet, putting on a small, reassuring smile.

"I'm fine," the white lion responded sharply, probably more sharply than he'd intended. And it was the truth - yes he had numerous cuts and scrapes, bruises and pulled muscles, strains and general aches, none of it was serious, all of it would heal in time. The most lasting wounds were inside, where Yareha was still bitter over the whole thing.

But he didn't want to sound confrontational. So he took a breath, swallowed hard and when he felt himself to be calm once more, looked up and asked a question of his own.

"Do you two live around here?" A logical enough question. One he might have asked the black lion, had that male been less eager for a fight.

He sounded like he'd already been asked that one too many times, or perhaps like whatever had caused the physical damage had bruised his ego as well. Seemed reasonable, nobody liked losing a fight.. or perhaps getting into a fight, if he had been the victor. Thaddaeus doubted that, based on primary observations.

"Alright," he said, tilting his head.

Asante was neither surprised nor put off by the attitude, but she was pleased to watch him consciously make an effort to be more civil so her smile widened and she took a small step closer. They had stopped some feet away from the stranger, trying to leave plenty of personal space.

"Today we do," she answered, "What's your name?"

Ah, so they were travelers, like himself. The white lion wondered idly if these two had any destination in mind, or if they too were simply wandering. But, he didn't want to pry too much at the moment. He was surprised when the lioness took a step closer. But...she certainly seemed friendly, though her mate appeared to be a bit more reserved.

"Yareha Afaer," he answered. "And whom I do I have the honor of meeting?" He was more polite than usual, trying to make up for a poor first impression.

"Asante," she introduced herself brightly.

"Thaddaeus," he added.

"Pleased to meet you, Yareha Afaer," she said, saying his name carefully and obviously enjoying it. It was a unique name, she thought. Very interesting. She had no idea what it meant but that wasn't a big deal.

"Do you live around here?" Thaddaeus asked curiously now that introductions were out of the way. They hadn't run into many residents in the area but that didn't mean there weren't any. They did know there were no prides right here, though. They weren't always easy to spot but they were fairly confident after spending a few weeks here.

There. Introductions. That was fairly painless and easy, now wasn't it? Now all he had to do was focus on this pair before him, and forget about the other lion from earlier. Easier said than done, but he would have to try.

"No, I'm a stranger here, and just passing through," Yareha answered Thaddaeus honestly and openly. "I simply didn't want to trespass or make trouble for anyone."

Which was also true enough. Trouble just always seemed to find the white lion.

"Looks like trouble found you, then," she commented boldly, glancing him up and down and frowning, "I didn't realize we had any particularly violent neighbours while we were staying here."

Asante did sound completely convinced that Yareha had not gotten himself into whatever mess ended with him looking this sorry. Whatever happened was enough of a mystery that there was no reason not to give him the benefit of the doubt. And even if they were wrong and he was the violent, aggressive one.. there were two of them and only one of him.

There were a dozen other questions that could go with someone just passing through the area and Thaddaeus was kind of surprised that Asante didn't ask a single one of them. She did have a valid comment, though. They had not run into any problems here but perhaps they were lucky.

"Not all the locals are that bad," he added brightly.

Yareha's mouth twisted. Of course with wounds this fresh, they would know something of what had passed before. Not because of strange powers that no lion should have, but because they weren't stupid and could read the map of injuries across his body.

"I didn't either. I'd thought to get some information from him about this area, and he attacked me," the white lion answered the unspoken question grimly. Hopefully that would be enough for them. Yareha grudgingly admitted to himself that the two were simply concerned. For him, since he was here, and likely for themselves. No one wanted to live near violent lions without a good reason for it.

The pair exchanged a look when Yareha revealed his attacker was provoked by simple questioning. They both knew they were only getting one side of the story but he didn't sound like he was hiding anything serious and it was worrying.

"Perhaps it's a good thing we intend to move on soon," she said.

Thaddaeus nodded in agreement.

"We might be able to help you," he suggested, "We've been here for a bit, and we've wandered through a lot of other places. Maybe we have some of the information you're after."

"That would be wonderful," he accepted the offer with some relief. Latitare was nothing to sneeze at, but to know what was around without having to look would be a blessing.

Abruptly realizing that he was still standing in the stream and that his paws had been numb for some time now, Yareha padded over to the two and stepped onto the bank near them.

"I would love to know what other water sources are around, and if there are any prides," he went on, detailing the information he'd been hoping to get ever since the eagle had raised his hopes earlier today. Not that the white lion intended to join or even go near any prides. He simply wanted to know where they were so that he could continue to avoid them.

"This is actually the best water source around here," Thaddaeus said regretfully, looking down as Yareha finally stepped out of the water. It wasn't anything to sneeze at but it didn't make for much of a social scene when there was so much length for everybody to spread out along.

He looked around, trying to remember where he'd seen the last large body of water and if this was near enough in any of the right directions to possibly feed into or from it.

"I believe there's a waterfall near those mountains, if you're looking to go that far," he nodded off into the distance.

Asante nodded along with Thaddaeus.

"I think there is a pride living in those mountains, too, but we've never really gotten firsthand information on them," she said, thinking to some of the rumors around when they had been nearer the mountains themselves, "I don't remember what they were supposed to be called, though. Something to do with birds."

She looked to her mate but he shrugged.

"Didn't hear anything bad about them, though," she added thoughtfully, shrugging.

Yareha nodded understanding as Thaddaeus related that the stream was the best around. It was a shame, but not every place could have plentiful water. And most of those locations were claimed by prides and not always accessible to outsiders. He couldn't blame these two for that.

And...a bird pride? How...interesting. Well. He had Latitare, so perhaps it would be worth investigating further. Not that he was looking for a place to stay, but it couldn't hurt to learn more about it.

"Thank you, all of this is very good to know," he told the pair. "Is there anything else you would care to share about these lands?" Just in case there was something he should know that he hadn't known enough to ask. Or had forgotten, as the case might be.
