He wasn't sure why he's agreed to helping her or this race. All he knew was that she'd looked so hopeful and in awe looking at him. He thought he looked like hell most days but he still got respect for his runner status. It was a huge promotion from his out-lander self of a month ago. Back then he'd thought coming back to his warren looking like he did was impossible. Now he thought he might have been mistaken. Apparently most of his warren-mates didn't see the scars as disgraceful. To them they were war wounds. A symbol of his strength against extreme adversity. His back leg twinged in the cold and he was reminded that some things would never heal.
The young doe had followed him out of the warren and to edges of their protected territory. He'd agreed to race her on the grounds that they wouldn't go far and the ground wouldn't be too rough. It was getting too cold to expel too much energy in a race like the one he'd done on the hill. "Now, this should be an easy race. Just two laps around the edges of the warren territory. We'll start when you're ready." His broken ear twitched as a cool breeze brushed across it.

It had been rough for Kalei since the raid, and she was still shaken by the loss -- not only of Ray's life, but of the confidence she once had of herself, too. So much had changed in so little time, and she could only fully appreciate now how hard the higher ranks worked to keep the down safe.
Since that time, she'd met Charcoal, a tattered buck who had been in the raid with her, though in a separate group. He was a hlessi when she first saw him, and already he was a runner now. Unaware of his previous history with the warren, she wondered at his skill and the experience he'd had for such a quick ascension. And so, when she noticed a helper's heart within him, despite his otherwise grave countenance, she asked if he'd be up for a race with her.
She knew now that just skill wasn't enough. During her only raid, she'd dropped every single flay-rah she had as she fled the farm. Although no one had called her out on it, she still felt the weight of the shame. Still, she hoped that this race would be of some help. How close would she make it, compared to this experienced buck? Had her previous confidence been the childish result of a pampered life within the down, or did she really have something she could be proud of? She'd find out soon enough.
"I'm ready."

((Alright, Roll 1 d10 ten times. This might take a while since we'll be playing off each other one after the other. 1 = Trip and Fall 2 = A stumble 10 = Faster than heck Gauge your speed from there.)) He watched her as she twitched and quivered in the cold. "Well alright then." He lined up with her got into position and gave a loud. "Go!" This was going to be interesting. He hadn't raced in months. Raiding and gathering flay along with his other daily duties were slightly different from racing. But then he knew that it was a pastime some of the other runners participated in often so he didn't see why it would be frowned upon for him.
He hunkered down and tried to rocket off the invisible line he'd drawn..

((Thank you so much for your patience! Finals are over, and I'll try to give faster replies.
Roll: 1/10))
At his word, Kalei leapt off against the earth, propelling herself forward. Surprisingly, there was a bit of fear when she began. She, too, had not raced for fun for a while, and for a moment her rabbit mind almost thought they were fleeing from something.
The feeling soon passed, however, and was replaced with a growing thrill. A quick look about them revealed no elil close by, which gave her some assurance, and she allowed herself the pleasure of enjoying a good run about with a warren-mate. Still, she wouldn't make this easy for him if she could help it.
