It was your typical evening rush at the Ace of Spades; Aubrey had been called in to work and was already not in the best of moods, she had a big test in Physics coming up that she hadn’t been able to study for yet. She was hoping the day would slow down a little and she might be able to read over some notes in between tables, but at the rate this day was going, it was highly unlikely she would catch any sort of break.
It was getting towards the end of the family dinner time and more towards those interested in the games on the HD TVs or the alcohol. Aubrey was just finishing up with one table, and was on her way back with their change when she noticed a certain regular customer and suppressed a groan, he was notorious for getting rowdy when his team was losing… and he had lousy tastes in sports teams.
Pushing back her aggravation she smiled at her customers and wished them a good and safe night, wishing that she might be lucky enough to get the same, though her luck rarely followed her into her personal life.
Aubrey stuffed the tip in her apron and cleaned off the table swiftly so that it would be ready for the next customer, then went to check on her other tables, making sure everyone’s drinks were topped off and were enjoying their meals if they had one.

Normally the Ace of Spades was not a watering hole Donovan would choose to spend a great deal of time at. He didn't like sports and thought no man should be paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for running around playing with their balls. Was wearing tight lycra pants really less gay than tights? He didn't think so and had made mention of these ideas in a place like this once. It hadn't ended well, some meat head with more muscles than brains took offense and he was asked not to return. But that had been Boise and not Destiny City.
Anyway, his sainted grandfather, rest his soul, had liked sports and watched upon occasion when he was a lad with Flynn on one knee and a beer in the other. He was in here watching football in honor of that nostalgia and as soon as he could get service he'd be sipping beer to that affect and to make the experience tolerable. He spotted a waitress checking on everyone.
"Oye, lass, I'd like an ale if you have it, Irish red beer if you don't." She seemed to be harried. "No rush, though."
Donovan knew there was a difference between ale and beer and hoped she wouldn't ask if there was. And even still there was a difference between good ale and good beer and the usual swill that was served. If you asked him, and usually no one ever did, beer was only worth drinking if it was made properly. Beer was all about the taste.
His eyes scanned the crowd and noted the family crowd seemed to be thinning in favor of the hard core sports bar abusers. He knew the type - loud, relentless, and shockingly rude when it comes to watching the game. Men like that usually put him off his ale and that was a hard task. She smiled and winked though she looked a bit too young for his tastes. Couldn't hurt to flirt.

"Lass" Was not a term she heard often, usually only when her boss was around, he was a big fan of Ireland and enjoyed thinking he was Irish though he was mostly a combination of other European countries, still she raised a brow upon hearing it and looked at the man who spoke. He seemed to be attractive enough, though she didn't have many customers asking for Ale, or called the waitresses Lass.
Aubrey smiled at him and mentally shrugged before going into the back room where there was a cask of Ale that her boss was quite fond of. She got one of the bar tenders to pour her the ale then soon returned with a large mug filled to the top with a nice dark amber in color.
"We don't have many people asking for Ale, My boss would love you." Aubrey commented absently as she placed the mug in front of him on a coaster. "Can I get you anything else?" Aubrey questioned leaning lightly against the bar counter, scanning the area again to search for customers in need or rowdy individuals.

Lass was used playfully considering she couldn't have been more than a couple of years younger than he was. He usually shrugged off age. As long as a girl was legal...but he smiled when she brought the mug and slid a twenty on the table. His last stint in Africa had been lucrative. He got several shots the magazine had paid for above and beyond the main article to be used in others down the line. He signed the release and they signed the check. It was that simple.
"Would he now? Why is that?"
Not many people recognized his wise choice in beverages so anyone who potentially could was worth at least a cursory question or two's worth of information. Common threads was all. Just common threads.
"A lot of people don't have much taste. They think the swill most people make is beer. It's not beer. It's..."
Well, swill. But he digressed. Instead he studied the enchanting creature in front of him for a moment or two, subtly letting his eyes wander. There was ale in hand. Food. Yes, food was the next best thing.
"What do you recommend in food here? Dinner's winding down but maybe I can get something good? I've been in Africa these past few weeks and a cheeseburger is hard to come by."
It was a very sad and sorry state of affairs when a man couldn't get a hamburger.

"My boss loves Ireland and obsesses over Ale and Irish beer, he's actually on a trip there now, he'll be happy to be able to bring home more kegs without getting in trouble with his wife if there's a customer who'd actually order it." Aubrey informed him as she handed him a menu.
"Our bacon cheeseburgers are great, it's been said we have the best burgers in town, served with curly fries, our chicken wings are awesome too, there are a bunch of flavors listed here." She added pointing at the section on the menu as she brushed a strand of hair back away from her eyes with her other hand and tucked it behind her ear, she then shifted her position so that her weight was on the other foot.
"Do you need a few minutes with the menu or are you ready to order?" she questioned before Aubrey flashed him a grin as she slid the 20 towards her. "You know, the Ale is only 7.50, I'll get you some change." Aubrey said smiling at Donovan, not wanting to bother him too much though she didn't have any other interesting customers.

"I'll eat whatever you want to bring me. I'm not picky about much when it comes to food. I've been places where you'd shudder to think what's on the menu."
He had been, too. All over the world he'd been for work. His last trip had him in Rio shooting some beautiful photographs of the wildlife there and had him up more than a few nights chatting up the pretty ladies and trying to dance those spicy Latin dances when he was drunk which was very often.
He took a sip of his drink and grinned.
"Your boss knows his way around a good ale, I'll hand him that. Pass on my compliments. Keep em comin."
Maybe he was a little too old world sometimes. Maybe he wasn't hip to the trends, not that he cared. But in Flynn's opinion outside the social circle was usually the place to be. He didn't have rules to obey or molds to try and fit himself into. He was free which was pretty much his one and only concern, being entirely devoid of strings.
"Anyway, Lass, don't bother with that change. I have a feeling I'm gonna need all the help I can get tonight."
He winked at her for good measure.

Aubrey smiled at Donovan, she always did like good stories, especially if they came from attractive men. "You should tell me the reasons for going to these wretched places, I love a good tale, especially if its about traveling." Aubrey added never having been outside of the north eastern states.
"And if it will be servers choice I'll be sure to bring you the best I can, but do you like spicy things?" Aubrey questioned tilting her head to the side.
She nodded about keeping his ale full and could secretly hope he would continue to tip well throughout the night and not just as a beginning tip that is meant to cover the whole bill, she had customers like that before. However Aubrey simply smiled at him and slid the twenty into her apron, she would not argue if he did want to tip her well, lord knows she could use it.
"Well I'll be sure to keep an especially close eye on you, just in case." She added with a grin and a small wink.

Honestly food was food to him. He didn't have even the commitment to flavor to care what was put down in front of him. But she was cute and seemed to be liking their conversation so he wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. At her question, though, he had to pause as if pondering before he responded.
"You think I'm not hot enough?" he joked, gesturing to his chest.
He could regale her tales about his profession and being flown to some of the most exotic places in the world and photographed some of the most beautiful animals and locations on the planet. He was a world traveler and though that often meant being hot or uncomfortable, working long days and getting little sleep it was also worth it because he had good stories to tell that the ladies loved and he also had great artwork all of the time.
"Honestly," his eyes flicked to her nametag, "Aubrey, I'm not that picky. I'll tell you any story you want to hear."
He took a sip of his ale and smiled into the cup. If he had to spend the night in a cheesy sports bar at least he had something nice to look at, like her rack in that corset. Things didn't come much better than that.
"You do that, Lass. I'm worth looking at."

Aubrey's mood was already starting to brighten, this going from a bad night to a rather enjoyable one, this guy was cute, and entertaining enough to continue to talk to rather than serve quickly, smile and move on.
Aubrey grinned at him when he made his joke. "Wouldn't want to serve you something you wouldn't like." she responded tucking a wayward curl behind her ear, by this time of night there were several trying to escape her braid.
"Speaking of, I'll go put in an order for you, I'll be right back." Aubrey commented though as she walked away she quietly mused under her breath. "Certainly is worth it..." She entered the kitchen with a silly grin on her face put in a food order with the better of the two cooks and made her way back out with a bounce in her steps.
She swiftly checked on her other tables to make sure they were happy, comfortable, and drinks topped off before heading back to Donovan, she was in such a good mood she didn't notice that some of the drinkers on the far side of the bar were starting to get rowdy as the football game on the tv was headed towards the end and their team wasn't doing well.
"Ready for another Ale yet? Or anything else I can get you?" Aubrey questioned cheerfully when she reached Donovan.

Donovan noticed the two buff meatheads in the corner and wondered how anyone could get so worked up about a game where grown men strap on a ton of armor just to play rugby. It made no sense to him but then again he wasn't much of a sports fan. He did this for Pappy and no one else. His granddad was the sports fan. He just occasionally honored the old man by indulging his pastimes.
He smiled as Aubrey returned, though, his gaze brought back her way. His green eyes admired her again.
"Aye, lass, another ale if you don't mind."
That's when one of the big brutes yelled loudly enough for the restaurant to hear accusing the other of some such bad taste when it came to football, something about his mother. Flynn didn't quite care what it was, only that one guy threw a punch at the next and disrupted his perfectly peaceful evening. True, this wasn't exactly a family place at the moment but he liked keeping the peace.
"Excuse me."
He got up from the table and moved toward the big guys intent on getting them to stop and, of course, not noticing that two outnumbered one.

Aubrey frowned as the men started to get rowdy, and there went her nice evening. She reached out her hand to grasp Donovan's sleeve to try and stop him. "Really it's not worth troubling yourself they'll be over it in a moment" she pleaded not wanting him to get hurt or there to be more of a mess than there needed to be. She released his arm however since she couldn't really keep him from doing what he pleased. Aubrey slipped back to the kitchen to get his refill check on his order and warn the cooks that something might be about to happen. She brought the glass to Donovan's spot and looked towards the rowdy men to see what was happening.

"It's worth intervening if by doing so I save you some trouble."
He gave her a winning smile and moved ever the same toward where the two men quarreled. Once Aubrey disappeared into the back he lost sight of her and didn't think on her again. So long as she was out of harm's reach it didn't much matter. The two lugs were still arguing as he approached but stopped when they saw him.
He spoke amiably enough but was punched in the face for his troubles and stumbled to the floor. There was blood spurting from his nose but a grin on his lips. Other patrons took notice, murmuring at the sight. Someone thought to call the police. Flynn only rose and punched back, asking them all the while to please leave the establishment and let the people enjoy their meals and the rest of the game in peace.
He hoped that soon they'd give up and soon they did, laughing at his bloody nose and forgetting their disagreement for the fun of tormenting a common enemy.

ZaiaFantasy three years later... i'll just wrap this up sweatdrop Aubrey called a taxi to take the drunkards home and cleaned up the mess they had made. She gave Donovan a damp cloth for his nose and told him his tab was covered for the night.
Normally Aubrey took care of the drunks herself, and she usually got them outside without getting blood all over the place which was a pain to clean up. However she appreciated that Donovan wanted to stand up to the drunkards, even if it did give her more work to do.
Her shift was ending so she bid the gentleman good night and closed out her tabs and made her way home.
