MPAPURO

The yellow juvenile was wandering around aimlessly, sniffing flowers, nosing rocks and generally having fun amusing herself. Her brother was doing something boring and her older siblings were, well, older.

But Mpapuro was certain that something interesting would turn up. It always did! The sun was bright, the grass was green, and there were lions everywhere. It was the Pridelands after all. The young lioness loved her pride, the fact that it was impossible to walk from one end to another in a day (at least, not for a young lion), the fact that there were more lions than she could count around, and she didn't know most of them - yet.

She was confident that she'd learn them all. Someday.

With her cubs all grown up – and one even having moved far away! – Imara had a lot less to do with her time, since she didn't have to constantly get them out of ridiculous situations anymore. Life was pretty good for Imara now, what with a happy, stable home and a mate. Even her general demeanor looked softer, less like an angry grimace and just a sort of scowl – but, no lie, she'd probably always look somewhat grumpy unless she smiling or something. She probably looked a bit older than she was, thanks to the hard lifestyle she had led. But now all was about happy, and stuff.

Happy stuff included 'strolls', which lions around here liked to do to pass the time when they weren't hunting or socializing, or were hoping to find someone to socialize with. She wasn't really doing that, still somewhat socially handicapped as she was, and yet managed to walk right into the path of a certain young lioness. Without noticing her (because she was short, and Imara had been looking straight ahead), she passed a bit close, nearly bumping into Mpapuro. Imara herself didn't notice, but to the juvenile it might seem like a rather rude cut-off, unintentional as it was.

Oblivious as a juvenile might be, Mpapuro certainly noticed the big black lioness who nearly stepped on her. She stared after the older female indignantly until she realized that not only had the near-miss not been intentional, the other lion didn't even know she was there!

"Hey, wake up!" she called out with a grin. "You almost stepped on me! You didn't though, so it's okay, but you might want to be more careful," the younger lioness advised. She really didn't mind, now that she knew it wasn't on purpose. But it would be bad if the lioness did indeed step on someone! Hopefully she could help prevent that!

Life as an Outlander had mostly taught her to react to surprises with anger instead of fear, and so she frowned deeply, laid her ears and almost snarled when the cub spoke up from so nearby. She managed to keep that in check, at least, though her frown looked far from friendly or apologetic.

But it was a cub and, of course, she softened somewhat once she managed to recognize that. "I'm awake," Imara said lamely. "But I didn't notice you. Sorry." It was hard for Imara to sound too sincere in her apologies, so she probably would not come off as properly chastised.

The yellow lioness cocked her head to one side as she considered the adult before her. It was strange that the black female would want to frown at Mpapuro when the near-miss hadn't even been her fault! And then her apology...

"No you're not," the juvenile returned with a grin. "You sound even less sorry than I do when Mommy makes me apologize to my brother!" she announced. It was actually reassuring because obviously a grownup would know how much or how little "sorry" was acceptable and if this lioness could mean her sorry that little, then Mpapuro had obviously been putting too much effort into her own apologies.

"I'm Mpapuro, what's your name?"

"I am." She frowned, not liking the implication that she was lying. But she also lacked the desire to really argue about how regretful she was with this cub, so she just shrugged. She was very bad at judging apologetic-ness, if her cubs had ever been in the situation that this one described, she had probably failed to notice.

"My name is Imara. Nice to meet you."

"Yes, yes it is nice to meet you," Mpapuro agreed cheerfully. It didn't matter much to her that the black lioness wasn't particularly chatty. The yellow juvenile could easily provide enough chatter for two...or more.

"Where were you going and why were you thinking so hard you almost stepped on me?" she asked in a sudden stream of words.

The question stumped her. Imara knew exactly where she had been going, and what she had been thinking: nowhere, and nothing in particular. But for some reason she felt like she needed to have been.

"I was going to the watering hole. Thinking about my son." She picked a place and a subject at random, though it might as well have been more important. She did wonder how Savassi was doing, wherever he had ended up. Tianxia or something.

"Water is very important," the yellow girl agreed. Mother said that if you didn't drink enough water, you would die! So it was good that the older lioness was going to get water, because then she wouldn't die and no one would have to be sad.

"You have a son?" Mpapuro asked aloud, pouncing on the other statement. "What's his name? Have I met him? Is he big like you or little like me?" One question after another, rapidly fired from the juvenile's mouth to the black lioness' ears.

It didn't matter to her that the lioness seemed to have forgotten her presence and was staring off into space. Mpapuro could smply ask questions until she got an answer. Eventually, she would!
