The young filly stared in horror at the imposing figure that blocked the entrance to the lands that she had called home. The figure's leathery wings slashed down towards the filly causing her to stumble over her own talons. She fell to the ground and frantically struggled to get away from the deadly winged claws descending towards her. The sounds of battle descended all around her as she closed her eyes towards the inevitable.
...
The day had started out rather fair. Rather than be a burden on the Soquili that bore the title of mother in her mind Lethe had opted to stay out of her mother's way. She took herself in a new direction and ended up spending the day lost in the darkened recesses of a forest. She had enjoyed the solitude and the chance to practice her stalking skills. Walking around with talons instead of hooves took a great deal of practice. Even running posed a challenge for Lethe. Finding a suitable pace was never an issue; it was the complete humiliation that she felt when she ended up traveling head over rump because her talons dug into the earth and stuck there stopping her momentum dead in its tracks.

Finally she had begun her return towards home. She had grown to expect unnerving silence from her mother and hostile glares sent her way. What she didn't see was that every day she was losing a battle; one that was bound to erupt at any time.

User ImageEnough was enough. Terra couldn't be bothered to be saddled down with something that looked to her for guidance. The batwalker gave an angry hiss as she swiped down at the creature that was her daughter. How utterly pathetic was this? Her own daughter lacking the grace and finesse that she herself possessed. The claws on her wings drew closer to the trembling filly. A sharp cry tore through the night as the scent of iron was released into the air.
....
The days had begun to grow shorter and Terra was growing more restless. She constantly tried to cast off the bonds of parenthood and was growing more irritable the longer that her daughter remained stuck to her side like a leech. The batwalker was tired of playing the "mom" card and wished to drill that fact into her daughter's head. It was time to literally kick her child out of the nest. It was with this attitude that she began to form a plan. Whether it would work was another plan. She needed to wait until Lethe wandered away on one of her little forays. Once that happened her plan would be put into motion. Her daughter would return to find someone much more menacing barring her way back home. Terra would attack her own daughter to drive her out of the lands that she had called home for the time being.

Lethe cried out in sudden pain. The right side of her face burned and she could feel the liquid that was her lifeblood running down her muzzle. She backed away awkwardly and ended up tripping over her own feet. The filly stared in horror at the bright splashes of red that seemed to materialize on the ground. She was leaving a blood trail. Lethe stared at the figure that had brought her into this world with a horror struck expression. Her voice was on the verge of breaking as her mother began to advance. "W-w-what are you doing m-m-mom?"

Lethe only had her talons really to defend herself and she'd not had much practice in the art of fighting. Was there any chance that she'd survive a battle against such a being like her mother? She stared down at the ground, quickly gauging her own fighting prowess. What she realized is that she was sadly lacking in any ability that could aid her. Her head came back up sharply as one of her mother's wings swatted at her side, bowling her over. She rolled and felt her head strike the ground. Her vision swam and she struggled back to her feet. If she stay laying down then it was a certain possibility that she would end up dead.

Terra ignored the cry of pain that was torn from her daughter. Her gaze had locked in on the bright red liquid that welled up from the deep scratch that her winged claws had inflicted on the creature. Her mouth began to salivate at the familiar tang of blood in the air. Her gaze took on a red vision as the urge to hunt began to overwhelm the logical portion of her brain. She dimly heard the words that were spoken but they blended into the familiar cry that she heard from all her former victims ... if they had the power of speech. Her gaze locked on the cowering form before her and she moved forward. The batwalker surrendered to the primal urge to destroy and she took another swipe at the creature before her.

This time though she used the side of her wings to strike out. There was a brief sense of wrongness as her wing snapped out and buffeted the pitiful creature. It rolled along the ground and Terra snarled in victory. Here was the moment she longed for. It seemed though as if her prey refused to lie down. Terra watched impassively as the figure struggled to its feet. There was a sense of disorientation in her prey. Terra moved forward once again before placing her wingtip claw on the side of the neck of her prey. A brief whimper broke through the haze of the hunt.

Lethe could barely stand straight. That second blow and resulting hit to the head caused her to stagger badly. By the time she righted her footing it seemed to be already too late. Her ice blue eyes snapped up to meet her mother's burning red ones as she felt the sharp claw tip of her mother's wing resting none too gently on her neck. Her eyes closed swiftly shut to block out the sight of the hatred in her mother's gaze. The filly gave a reflexive swallow in hopes to dislodge the unpleasant sensation but it was of no use.

A strangled-sounding whimper broke free from her mouth as she stood motionless. Why hadn't she felt the sharp slice that she knew was coming? She had seen her mother hunt before and she knew that it was the favorite finishing move that her mother delivered to all her victims. What was going on? Her eyes opened slowly just as she felt the claw tip travel lazily to rest over the pulse point in her neck. She apparently was not out of danger yet but it seemed as if her mother had taken a few minutes to play instead of going for the all out kill. Was there a chance she could reason with her. "M-m-mom?"

Terra's claw traced lazily along the filly's neck. She was enjoying this far too much. It wasn't a common thing going after one so young but Terra always cherished younger prey. Sometimes they were too afraid to cry out. This filly was such a victim. Besides the two small whimpers there had been no sound to emerge from her mouth. No pleading of any sort. Terra scented the fear wafting from the filly before her claw tip came to rest on the pulse point. She pressed down gently and heard a resulting gurgle of alarm. However it seemed that something else broke through her concentration. A single word spoken from the filly had caused her to cease her actions.

Terra's gaze took in her daughter once more before she snarled. There was no sign of remorse in her red eyes as she examined her pitiful daughter cowering beneath her. Terra screeched sharply and watched as her daughter cringed to block out the sound. Now that she was back in her right mind Terra found that she was ready to carry out the final pieces of her plan. "Stop cowering. I have something to tell you."

Terra waited for Lethe to give her her full attention.

Lethe cringed at the high screeching sound that her mother made. She had always hated when her mother did that. The words that her mother spoke though had Lethe looking up to her mother in relief. It seemed as if Terra had regained the logical side of her thinking. She gave a soft sigh of relief. It seemed of if her ordeal was over. Lethe made a move to press against her mother to show that she didn't blame her one bit but was stopped by the feel of leather blocking her access. She couldn't help but feel hurt. She turned her questioning gaze towards her mother's face and was shocked to still see hatred there.

"What is going on mom?"

Lethe was beyond confused now. Her mother had initiated the earlier attack and followed through almost to the point to seemingly killing her own daughter and now she refused to let her near her side. Was something else at play here?

Terra took in the weak, pathetic creature that was her daughter. She had felt the brief impact of Lethe's attempt to reconcile against the leather of her wings. Her posture stiffened at the question that had been spoken by Lethe. What exactly was happening? Was she really ready to shatter the bond that had been formed that one strange night?

Of course she was. Terra Stryker could not be burdened with a child to look after. Her gaze turned cold as she flared her wings. Dramatic yes but it served its purpose to drive Lethe a little further away from her. Her teeth flashed in a silent snarl before she tilted her head to the side. She was mocking her daughter now and then she began to speak.

"You ask what is going on. Should it not be obvious daughter that I am shedding myself of your presence?"

Terra let that sentence sink into silence before slashing out with her claws once more. The claws' impact tore a cry of pain so intense from her daughter that Terra couldn't help but pause. The scent of old iron rose around the mare as she observed the parallel lines of red along her daughter's neck. What a glorious sight to behold. Blood of her bloodline spilled at her feet. The batwalker idly watched as Lethe trembled before her. She addressed her daughter for the final time. "Are you surprised that I stopped? Don't be. Unless you can find a way to defend yourself those wounds will draw in all sorts of unpleasant visitors. And this will ensure that you won't be able to for a while."

Terra suddenly reared and struck her daughter with her hooves. Lethe dropped like a stone. Terra sneered at the sight of Lethe's eyes rolling up into unconsciousness. That was that. Without further thought the mare transformed into her bat form and winged her way across the sky forever breaking herself free of the shackles of parenthood.

Shadows gathered and coalesced as darkness began to fall. A cacophony of howls rent the air as a pack of wolves began their evening song. It was to this noise that a small, prone figure began to stir. Lethe's eyes flashed open with terror. Where was she? Why was she alone? These questions sped through the filly's mind as she attempted to get to her feet. She stumbled as her legs buckled under the strain of supporting her body. With a crash she returned to lying prone on the ground. Dizziness swept over her form as she tried to gain coherent thought. Giving herself a little time Lethe remained lying down. The howls of the wolves seemed to stay at a respectable distance and so there was no worry on the filly's part to find someplace to hide. The pain radiating from her head and neck clearly indicated that she was injured but how did it come to be that she had been left alone. Where was her mother? Why was she not here standing guard? Had something happened to her?

Lethe gave a small whimper as she pushed herself to her feet. This time she managed to stay upright as she took in the darkened clearing that she stood in. She was fairly close to the thicket that she called home and it was on an unstable balance that she tottered towards home. Would her mom be there and be in a foul mood because she was obviously injured? What had injured her? Why could she not remember what had happened?

Lethe broke through the brush surrounding the thicket that she shared with her mom and took in the obviously empty area. Her eyes widened with surprise. It appeared as if her mother was not back yet. Had she gone on a night hunt? She had done it before ... it wouldn't be out of the ordinary. Lethe gave a small shudder as the pain from her head injury began to throb again. She surrendered to the darkness once again as she realized that she'd pushed herself too hard to get home. Surely though when she woke she would not be alone anymore. Her mother had always returned before.

The next time that Lethe's consciousness returned daylight had arrived. Her eyes opened to the same surroundings that she'd opened them to day after day before this. The difference this time was that she was still alone. There was no indication that another being had shared her hollow. That worried her more. Why hadn't her mother come back through the night? Lethe gave herself a brief moment to try and recall what had happened the day before but nothing came to mind. She could not remember what had happened before she had come to wake up alone and injured. Laying her head back down Lethe sighed softly. She needed to find herself some kind of help for her injuries before setting out again but first she wanted to just rest her eyes again. She didn't know it now but it would be how she spent the majority of the next few days until hunger drove her away from the place that she had called home.
