Beloved Seraph

The park was showing clear signs of frost. Soon enough all the leaves would fall and the remaining plants would shrink underground... or completely covered by snow. Such was the way of winter, no matter how much the botanically inclined felt. Serpentine accepted this fact in the same manner he accepted all others. No point in being melancholy, as some others turned in the chilly days.

He still felt somewhat strange... perhaps because he did not feel too strange at all. The shortened pants were not his normal style, but the stiff, pleated material felt natural. The boots that sank into the snow were not his own, and yet were perfectly formed around his feet. The snakeskin of his belt felt cool against his hand, better than the bloated chill of his toy weapon. Serpentine wondered how he could have gone without this power within him for as long as he had... and the thought made him frown slightly as he strolled along the path and listening to the satisfying crunch of snow.

Remarque absolutely hated winter. Even in this getup, warmer now than he had been last year, he hated the cold. It was with great disdain that he had powered up in his room, just before the mirror, and with even greater disdain that he stepped through it.

The chill wasn't as bad as he had anticipated, but it was still unpleasant—and it would only get worse as the night dragged on. Ideally, he'd like to get some energy and retire before he had the chance to catch a cold, though the tingle of a chaos aura was enough to make him forget that idea entirely. He'd mirrorwalked into the area—apparently very near to a Negaverse agent.

There were certainly worse things to come upon in the middle of the night, so he pushed the bushes out of his way as he moved from the mirror. When he entered the clearing, he couldn't have been more than a few feet from the male.

While he'd partially been hoping to run into one of the Negaversers he knew—maybe Mesolite, or Bazzite—he certainly wasn't opposed to meeting new ones. "Oh. Evening," he greeted, as though it were the most natural thing in the world to step out of a mirror hidden in bushes.

And now for something completely different! :3

At first the lieutenant jerked back, the sudden appearance of another person somewhat ruffling his feathers. It appeared instantly in his narrowed eyes as he looked over the costumed man who literally came from nowhere. The stranger's uniform looked too decorative for a Negaverse officer and he had yet to meet one adorned with wings... but the thick, dark aura coming from him was similiar to that of Zinkenite. Not as powerful. Not the same kind of dark. Similiar, but not identical. Wings, too. What... was he?

Serpentine reflexively curled the snake in his hand for a better grip. Surprise had been the best element he had found thus for when dealing with the enemy... and he wasn't sure this stranger wasn't an enemy. He drew himself to his full height and cocked a single, rainbow brow as he asked simply, "And you are?"

The words were as frosty as the night air.

"Oh, chatty, aren't we," Remarque replied a bit dryly, perhaps not the easiest person to impress when it came to introductions. Neither was he speaking to an agent he knew, but he was speaking to one who hadn't even bothered to offer his name. How rude! Though, he couldn't pass up an introduction when the stage had been set. "Eternal Sailor Remarque. Dark Mirror Senshi of Puppetry. And you are…? Oh, no. Let me guess." He gave the male a glance over, as if deeply pondering. Leaning back, he crossed one arm across his chest to grip his elbow, and with his other hand stroked at his chin.

"…Just a boy, out taking his…snake? Snake," he affirmed, squinting at the toy, "For a walk." He paused, letting this deduction sink in. He was by no means a foolish individual, though first impressions seemed to stick, and he didn't particularly like the way the agent was looking at him. Of which the obvious course of action was to be an a*****e, because that was bound to make him like Remarque more.

"You Negaverse folk sure are an interesting bunch, I'll give you that much. Do you all carry toys, or just the really serious ones?"

MORTALK KOMBAT!

Golden eyes watched Remarque as he made his evaluation, increasing anger rising within them that the gold-and-green clad Negaverse officer did not bother to try and hide. Dark Mirror Senshi, which would explain the Chaotic aura... but that didn't matter once the word 'Senshi' came into play. All Senshi were the enemy, and as the man in front of him continued to talk, the lieutenant adopted a more obviously agressive stance, the muscles in his arms tensing even as he allowed the snake to dangle. He needed it available...just in case.

Serpentine did not appreciate being mocked--by anyone, but especially not a Senshi. He could certainly give as well as receive, and his voice grew even colder as he openly scoffed, "Better a toy with potential use than flimsy, gaudy robes and flightless wings." He raised his empty hand and gave a sweeping, dismissive gesture towards Remarque as though it was necessary to point out where he saw the flaws.

Then, without further warning, he sprinted forward. As soon as he could, he lunged in with his rubber snake dangling, intending it to be a distraction from the kick aimed at the puppeteer's knee.

Negaverse agents wanting to attack Remarque were surprisingly common—one of the reasons he was always questioning the Dark Mirror Court-Negaverse alliance. Despite being an eternal, it seemed there were still always agents who felt it necessary to try and take him on.

Serpentine would get points for being either stupid or courageous.

His plan of attack had worked, it seemed; Remarque's eyes focused on the toy. It had been far too long since he was in the boxing ring, and yet he still relied on those instincts to keep him safe in battle. Kicking was not a legal move in boxing, so his attention to Serpentine's fist left him nearly blind to the attack on his knee until he felt the warm surge of pain.

He should have focused on dodging, but when Serpentine had charged at him? How could he not have had it on his mind to teach this guy a lesson? What if it hadn't been Remarque that he'd ran into—what if it had been Aurora, or Mimistrobell? One who was still learning to defend themselves?

His hand had been curled into a fist even before the lieutenant's foot connected with his knee, though it was all the more incentive to throw an unfiltered blow. He aimed straight for the pit of the male's stomach, thrusting his fist without hesitation.

Serpentine had no real fighting experience outside of a few encounters he had started when people pushed him too far. Random bar fights and school yeard brawls, however, could only help so much. Remarque's boxer training and superior experience were evident as the swung fist connected solidly with the lieutenant's stomach. His hand reflexively tightened on his snake, but his hat blew in a seperate direction even as the lieutenant flew back. The force of the blow knocked the wind out of him and sent him flying back, a sensation only too familiar as the Negaverse officer landed hard and wheezed for breath.

Why? Why were they so much more powerful than him? First the Tiger Senshi and now this Remarque? Serpentine pushed himself to his feet, resolve hardening within him. He trained. He sought out these Senshi and fought them, as befitted his interpretation of the mission he been given. He knew he had power within him; he could feel it now as much as he had felt it that first night when Zinkenite had bestowed it upon him. Yet, it wasn't enough. His pride and vanity were undampened, but his patience was. He would not run again. He would prove his worth--to himself, if to no one else.

He spat onto the snow and prepared to dodge the next blow... if he was able.

Light on his feet and primed for battle, Remarque effortlessly balanced himself and moved to take another swing; he drew his arm back and had taken a step forward—and then stopped himself, if only just barely. Oh, he wanted to hit the lieutenant for getting him so riled up, though there was an undisputable difference in power between the two. He wanted to clock him right on the face—knock some sense right into that pretty little face.

Of course, there was always the possibility of doing brain damage, or word getting back to one of the higher ups. The little nagging voice in the back of his head told him that he should be acting more professionally—that he shouldn't be feeding into the fight, but trying to quell it. His hand, still curled into a fist, dropped to his side and relaxed. "While you're standing over there, why don't you take a few seconds to calm the ******** down. I'll give you a minute to decide if you want to come at me again, but I don't promise I'll take it easy on you if you try that again. You've got a good kick," he said, forcing his tone to stay even. A part of him wanted to reach down and massage his sore knee, though he wasn't willing to show any weakness. "You play soccer or something, or just got lucky?"

Serpentine tensed when he saw the arm being drawn back, and as the Senshi took a step back, the lieutenant leapt to one side, bracing himself for a glancing blow... that never came. Instead, he landed easily in the snow in a crouched position, standing to look over at his opponent. Gold eyes narrowed. This Senshi... was pausing the fight? To talk? Ridiculous!

The green-and-gold clad lieutenant circled around Remarque, running an inventory of materials available to him and coming up with nothing that offered him a real chance against his foe. The resolve, so recently steeled, would not melt, but it could be channeled, however momentarily. He despised idle chitter on a normal day--with a Senshi it would be practically unbearable. But he was patient... and from conversation could also come distraction.

His snakeskin belt was icy to the touch as he placed a hand on his hip and replied, "I do. You hesitate. Why?"

Remarque couldn’t help but be pleased when he received a positive response. He refrained from gloating, if only because he wanted to focus on the Lieutenant in front of him. "Are you complaining?" he asked, a bit of amusement in his voice. "Because we could just as easily go back to fighting. Of course, then you're going to have to explain to your superiors why you made a Dark Mirror Senshi beat you up, and considering that we're supposed to be humoring a truce, I don't think that's such a good idea. I'd hate to see you get scolded because you got a little excited. You should save your energy for the real troublemakers in Destiny City."

Attacking someone two ranks higher was a ballsy move; hopefully the White Moon wouldn't snuff him out before he got to put that enthusiasm to use.

The question did not even warrant a response--obviously Serpentine was not complaining. He rarely did. Complaining would not fix the problem; only hard work and concentrated effort could do that. Hence why he now fought Senshi rather than cool his heels and whine about them. He actually was eager to continue their bout, but the same pride that made him stand his ground held him back.

So far, he had suffered only a punch to the gut. Severe bruising, but hidden and easy enough to heal. The next blow might not be as convenient. A black eye, a broken nose, or a snapped bone would be far more inconvenient in terms of running his business and in damaging his features. He held his head high and, for now, accepted the verbal abuse. Since he did not care for Remarque's opinion, he let the implied threats slide off.

His lack of physical attack, however, did not prevent his tongue from being used as a weapon, however, as he was quick to demonstrate. "Senshi the scourge of Destiny City," the lieutenant countered "Truce or no truce, you are still one of them." Disdain dripped off of every word.

"Cute," Remarque said, in a tone that very obviously implied he didn't think there was anything cute about it. "But if you can't identify the good senshi from the bad, I'm thinking you're going to have some serious issues. You know there are senshi within the Negaverse, right? Seems a little self destructive to call your allies the scourge of Destiny City, don't you think? You probably won't be making a lot of friends that way. But tell me," Remarque paused to look the agent up and down again. "You're new. What do you have against the senshi, already?"

The White Moon? By all means, have a grudge against them. But all senshi—even the good ones? That warranted an explanation.

Serpentine tensed, praticaly spitting the words at Remarque. "No Senshi is my ally. For what she did to me... all of you will pay." The reasoning was quite simple, but the lieutenant felt no need to explain himself. All Senshi had become his enemies on the night of his corruption, when his shop had been badly damaged by the tiger-striped she-devil. Some of the plant were still recovering from bent stems and crushed flowers, even if the building itself was repaired. His livelihood, his pride, his mother's name that graced the shop... all had been tarnished. He would not forgive. He would not forget.

A selfish reason, and in the span of a cosmic war, a small reason. But a very strong reason to him. His gaze glinted in the darkness as he stalked closer. The time for talk was over, and he threw an open challenge, "Fight, or flee. No more talk."
PostPosted: Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:37 pm

Remarque's eyes narrowed at the challenge and he shifted positions—cracked his neck, first, and then his knuckles. He wasn't the sort to run away from any challenge, and he had given Serpentine more than enough warning. At this point, he didn't think he could be held accountable—and his ego wasn't going to let him flee any time soon.

"Suit yourself, lieutenant. But when your superiors as you what happened, you damn well better tell them you picked a fight with a Dark Mirror Senshi and he gladly put you in your place."

He had no more words to offer, and he was done playing nice. If this guy was going to hold a grudge against all senshi, Remarque would give him a reason to avoid the Dark Mirrors, at least. He lunged forward, this time hurling his curled fist towards Serpentine's face. This time, he held nothing back.

Serpentine did not respond to the taunt. If anything, he was proud to be reminded of his rank, no matter how puny. He should have been a captain, at least, to start, but better to be a lieutenant than any form of Senshi. To even be equated with one would have been the highest insult he could imagine. As far as he was concerned, Remarque's continued delination of their roles only proved his initial stance.

As a soccer player, Serpentine had taken his fair share of heavy hits. When he could not dodge the Dark Moon Senshi's blow, however, he was unprepared for the sheer power behind it. Hot blood gushed from the lieutenant's busted lip, dribbling down his chin and onto his sandy uniform as he fell into the snow. He hissed in pain, mimicking his name sake unintentionally as he forced himself to rise. The fresh blow not only made his face ache but also his bruised ribs. The cold was doing nothing to numb them, but rather made each flash of pain seem deeper.

But he was not going to give up. Not yet. Even if he wanted to run, Serpentine knew that he did not have a clear path to do so. That would be his only advantage, when the time came to make a retreat--a clear path and a chance to make use of his speed. Maybe that was one area in which he still had an advantage. For now, the athlete rolled and grabbed for Remarque's legs in an attempt to pull him down to his level on the ground.
