Bedwyr was far from the place where he and Lavender had lived now - the plains had been replaced by dark, cold forest and a lone path. Though he had never been afraid of the dark, the stallion had to admit he was a bit spooked by all the shadows a forest in the moonlight could produce, especially when the trees were bare. Having let Lavender do all the wandering for him in the last years, Bedwyr's sense of direction was rusty, and he had no idea where he was. Most of what he knew was that wherever he was, he was close enough that Nidawi and her family could find him, should they need or want to. She'd been a great asset in his healing, and though his emotional block was still intact, Bedwyr had discovered that he was able to help small flowers that were suffering in the cold. It wasn't much, but it was progress.
Continuing uncertainly down the path, Bedwyr studied his surroundings, pondering his family. His own herd had long since returned to the homeland, as far as he knew, leaving him stranded here in the Kawani Lands with his lousy inner compass. His foals had left the nest, and Lavender had just wandered away one day - they'd grown apart again, and though he had agreed to break up with her, he hadn't wanted to let her go. His heart was still injured, but with Nidawi's help, he was beginning to feel better. Bedwyr knew that, someday soon, he'd run into one of his children; there was only so far they could wander from home without accidentally encountering their father. It had been a long while since he'd talked to Ishika, and Bardan had inherited wanderlust from his mother... But Fergus was another story. The boy had just disappeared one day. Bedwyr and Lavender had searched high and low for him, but never found him.
Humming slightly at this ancient train of thought, Bedwyr mused on what Fergus might look like now - he must have grown into himself well, as both his mother and father were built tall and solidly. And the last time Bedwyr had seen him, Fergus had been the split child; not quite as stocky as Lavender and Bardan, but without wings and a solid violet that neither Bedwyr nor Lavender had carried in their coats...
Snorting, Bedwyr shook his head. There was no point pondering the lost foal - by now, he was either dead or fending quite well for himself. Bedwyr had learned long ago with Lavender that the loss of their third child was too heart-breaking to think about, and so had shut those thoughts out.

Fergus was watching the small campfire. Flannery was curled up near it in a thick blanket. She had been sleeping for some time now, they were traveling all day and she was exhausted. Most of the time when they traveled, she would have him carry things, but she hardly ever rode on his back. Fergus figured they could travel much faster and her feet wouldn't hurt so much if she just rode him. He wondered why she didn't, it seemed strange, but she always just gently held part of his mane and lead him about. Perhaps she just liked to enjoy the scenery.
The air was chilly but at least it wasn't snowing. Flannery had place a blanket on him to keep him warm, but as soon as she fell asleep, Fergus placed it on her. As long as he was dry, he was fine and didn't mind the cold. Flannery was his best friend, and as far as he knew, his only real family. Fergus didn't remember much from his child hood. his earliest memory was of him rolling around in a soft green meadow and two large figures standing over him. when he closes his eyes he can almost remember the smell, but that was long ago. From there on all he remembered was that Lemon had lead him to Flannery, who took care of him. He asked Lemon where he came from, where his family was. All she told him that she found him cold naked and shivering in a cave. But he didn't remember how he ended up in that cave, or where it was now.
He had long since given up on looking for his family. Flannery loved and cared for him like a mother. Although they could not speak the same language, they shared an un-explainable bond, they could read and understand each other in a special way. Taking care of her seemed to important to just wander off to look for a family that may not even be there. For now she was all he needed. but in the back of his mind, he always hoped that throughout their travels he might run into a long lost family member.

Bedwyr heard the crackling of a small fire before he saw it - the light of the flames flickered eerily through the trees as he drew closer. It was a strange fire, though, as if it were somehow contained... Unlike many wildfires he'd seen from afar, this one had yet to climb any trees or crawl along the ground through the underbrush, looking for more fuel. Suddenly extremely cautious, Bedwyr approached it quietly, and was startled to see a silhouette in the firelight.
Unfortunately, he couldn't stay quiet for long - the wind abruptly changed direction, and he inhaled a lungful of smoke. Hacking wildly, Bedwyr's eyes began to water. Hopefully, whoever was standing in front of the fire was friendly... Because there was no way he could outrun them with so little air in his lungs, and he wasn't too happy about fighting others. It didn't help that he didn't believe in using his horn as a weapon - whether or not it got in the way during a fight, however, was a different story. "Hello?" he called, deciding to just take whatever it was as it came at him. His deep voice was raspy with smoke, but he hoped it was soothing nonetheless.

Fergus was startled by the voice, his body jumped and his coat twitched. He swung his head to see the source of the voice. But his eyes were having trouble adjusting to the darkness after looking at the fire for so long. He could make out a shape, it was another Soquili. and was that... a horn? another uni? His heart jumped, he couldn't remember the last time he met another unicorn. A twinge of excitement sparked in him. this uni must be friendly, or else why would he say "Hello?"
But he wanted to protect Flannery while she slept so he would have to know their intentions.
"Yes, who is there? My keeper is sleeping so please walk gently."
walk gently? of course they were already walking gently enough to sneak up on him. he felt silly for saying it, but wanted to let them know he was not alone.

As the silhouette turned toward him, Bedwyr caught a flash of silver horn and blue-tinted tail in the firelight - whoever the other figure was, he was certainly a unicorn. Bedwyr's guard immediately dropped significantly. He had been taught, from day one, that a pure unicorn was the epitome of trustworthiness. That lesson had served him well over the years, and his subconscious allowed it to filter through his thoughts now.
However, he had noticed something strangely familiar about the figure - it could have been the way he held himself, or perhaps it was the combination of the horn and the tail... Whatever it might have been, Bedwyr recognized it. There was something else, though... His keeper? Bedwyr thought, wondering what that could possibly mean. A protector of some sort? At the moment, though, it didn't matter, and he pushed the thought aside.
"My name is Bedwyr, friend, and I come only with peace. May I approach?" His deep voice echoed softly through the shadows, and his etiquette was something he was very proud of - for, in even the direst of circumstances, courtesy was a gift that had gotten many out alive. Smiling at the seemingly friendly nature of the stranger before him, Bedwyr took a cautious step forward and into the dimmest ring of firelight.

Bedwyr... Fergus's tail twitched he felt like he should know that name, but didnt know why it sounded familiar. Bedwyr's voice sounded quite soothing and helped Fergus relax. his sound gave him a deep sense of calmness, something he had not felt in a long time. "Yes, please approach so that I may see you Bedwyr. My name is Fergus, it is a pleasure to meet you." His voice was casual but strong. He then looked and gestured to Flannery who was still curled up sleeping by the fire. "That is Flannery, she is my keeper, we take care of each-other." He thought he might need to explain, he was aware that most Soquili don't associate or spend much time with humans.

Giving the stallion before him another hard look, Bedwyr drew himself further into the light cast by the fire, and was shocked - struck dumb, in fact. The coloring of a colt that he'd once known, along with the name, had been what he had recognized... And for good reason. Before him stood his lost child.
"Your name... It is... Fergus?" Bedwyr couldn't help it - he said the words slowly, not believing even as he was seeing. "It cannot be... After so long..." The part about Flannery, the keeper, still had yet to be processed. After all, it was a once in a lifetime moment - the long-lost foal had finally found its way back to its parents. Or, at least, its father.
Moving closer to Fergus, Bedwyr studied him with a reverence usually reserved for things that he deemed miracles. However he'd thought of Fergus, for some reason, his mind had never wandered down the path of what would happen, should they actually find each other someday. Fergus had simply ceased to exist outside of the confines of the mind as the years had passed.
Bewildered as he was, Bedwyr didn't have the presence of mind to let Fergus in on the secret - that he, himself, was Fergus's father, and he had been searching for him since the day the boy had disappeared. That's okay. XD I do too. But I'll actually get a notice either way, since I started the thread. <3

As Bedwyr drew closer to the bright light of the fire, Fergus's eyes grew wider. He froze as he approached. Bedwyr's markings, and the placement of them were remarkably similar to his own. Even their hair was similar, same texture and length. Silver horn, blue eyes, face structure very much resembling his. they weren't the same color, but either Fergus was looking at a much older sibling, or he was more likely facing his father or close relative.
His blood chilled and he exhaled just to see his breath. Fergus found himself staring at Bedwyr, almost rudely so.
"I know the chances of meeting another pure unicorn are rare enough, but I can't help but point out that we look very much alike."
He didnt want to out right say it, but he wanted to out right say it. and he could tell by the way he looked at him that Bedwyer was either thinking the same thing or knew who Fergus was.

Breaking from his trance, Bedwyr almost chuckled when Fergus said "pure unicorn" - he knew for a fact that Fergus wasn't pure, though his outward characteristics might have led him to think it. That was not, of course, a bad thing. Stepping further into the firelight, Bedwyr nodded. "We do look alike, but there is a reason why that is so," he said, giving the boy a small smile. Obviously, there was a reason that Fergus could not remember his father. What it was, Bedwyr didn't know, but he figured now was as good a time as any to tell Fergus his story.
Shifting his huge form until he was comfortable, Bedwyr relaxed into the fatherly mode he'd found, so long ago, when tucking Ishika and Bardan in for the night. He assumed that Fergus would listen to whatever he had to say... "You see, a long time ago, I had a mate, and she bore me three beautiful foals. They were all placed comfortably inside their baskets, and, slowly, those baskets began to turn color: one blue, one black, and one purple." Bedwyr paused for a moment of emphasis. He wanted to be clear and concise, so Fergus wouldn't have a chance to interrupt him. "A while later, foals emerged. Two boys and a girl... But, after a month, one disappeared. We searched high and low for the colt, but we never found him. It was heartbreaking - I was the one that was supposed to have been watching them, but he vanished." Looking down at his feet for a moment, Bedwyr tried to regain his temporarily lost composure. "We'd called him Fergus."
Suddenly unable to talk through his emotions, Bedwyr just looked at his lost son, hoping Fergus would be able to put the pieces together. He looked like a smart boy, even though Bedwyr couldn't exactly take credit for that. Giving the young stallion a watery smile, Bedwyr resisted the urge to burst into tears; though he wasn't afraid to show his emotions, that probably wouldn't make the best first impression.

Fergus didnt know what to say, he felt shocked and overwhelmed, and yet he felt as if he knew all along. "I always wondered, where I came from, if I had a family." That word felt heavy, up until now his family consisted of a goat and a human, now it meant something entirely different. something more powerful. Water was gathering in his eyes and he took a few heavy breaths to hold back the emotions, and the tears. "When Lemon found me in that cave, I had no idea who or what I was. All I knew was that I was called Fergus, but I had no memory of the voices that called me so." he let out a nervous laugh, "for a little while I even thought I was a goat, until I asked Lemon why my tail was so much longer than hers. She just smacked me and said 'Because you are a unicorn you fool!' " Fergus shook his head and looked down at the ground. If finally hit him, he was a unicorn, standing in front of his unicorn father. and somewhere he had a mother and a brother and a sister. the emotions were overwhelming and tears poured from his eyes. "All my life, I have felt like I am lost. And for the first time.. I feel like I am found." his voice cracked and he started to sob, he couldn't control himself. Fergus could do nothing but look at the ground and cry.

As Bedwyr stood there looking at his son, he began to feel immensely proud. It didn't matter that Fergus was crying - in fact, Bedwyr began to feel tears rolling down his own face. He couldn't help but let out a breathless laugh when Fergus mentioned thinking that he was a goat for a while. Getting closer to his long-lost foal, Bedwyr tried putting his head against the weeping stallion's neck. He'd waited far too long to find this child of his, who shouldn't have been lost in the first place. It was a terrible thing, but was now obsolete - they had, at last, found each other again. It was time to stop yearning for his lost child and time to embrace the young stallion that child had become. "Well, son, literally and figuratively, you have been," Bedwyr said in response to the "found" statement. "It took long enough, but we never have to lose each other again.
"Now," he continued, pulling back slightly and clearing his throat to get rid of the emotion growing in it. "Would you like me to fill you in on your biological family?" Bedwyr knew that he couldn't expect Fergus to give up his adoptive family simply because he'd finally stumbled into his biological one, and so decided it would be best to inform him of its goings on. There was quite a bit to tell - from the dramatic twice-broken lifemating of Fergus's parents to details about his brother and sister, it would be quite a long story. And, of course, Bedwyr wanted to hear all about Fergus's life - where he'd been for the past years, what he'd been doing, and, now that he was thinking about it, who Lemon and the mysterious "keeper" were. So far, Bedwyr had deduced that Lemon was, in fact, a goat, and not much else.

Fergus also pressed his head against Bedwyr's neck in a sort of embrace. It was the closest thing he could get to a hug and it felt wonderful. It all seemed so surreal. The cent of his father's mane was so comforting and familiar. The tears reduced to red watery eyes, and he could control himself again. The emotions were high but he was ready for them. These emotions were long over due, long awaited, and much anticipated. He had long since given up actively looking for his family. Only by some miracle did they happen to find each other.
He took a deep breath to collect himself. His sight was still blurry from the tears, but Bedwyr was still there in front of him, he could hardly believe it. He half expected him to evaporate and be taken away with the wind, but he was solid, and strong, the way a good father aught to be.
Realistically Fergus knew little about his father, the stallion before him was nearly a stranger. But Fergus was ready to love him unconditionally, he already did. He took another deep breath and pulled his face together. he nodded to Bedwyr "Yes, I want to hear all about them."Mahogany Sunset Your post almost made me cry. ;_; Fergus is very well-written. <3 D,,,,: thank you that's the nicest thing any one could say!
