Lab work - actual, honest to God lab work. Lex was a good mix of excited and worried about just what exactly he'd be doing, and what would happen if he messed up. Well, he already knew one of the consequences...
Shaking his head to clear the images of scalded flesh and hollow eyes, the Life trainee listened as the lab tech told him what he'd be doing.
"Basically, it's just like an old high school dissection lab. Cut the little b*****d open, and make a diagram of what you find."
Simple, something Lex could handle easily. He was handed a rather creepy looking minipet and shown a sterile table to work on. There was a scalpel, some tweezers, and a magnifying glass.
In the background, he heard a certain ex-scientist being given the same instructions.

This sort of thing might not have been Mimsy's forte, but curiosity easily filled the voids that lack of expertise left. She'd collected specimens of spiders and arachnids since she was a child, and flipped through books of mammalian anatomy when she was deemed old enough to see the inner workings of things, so there was very little intrigue that biology in the human world had left to offer.
But this was not her world. This was new territory, previously undiscovered by her own eyes. She had no protests when she was given a catlike minipet and a series of basic instructions, immediately moving to set to work.
She already had the scalpel in her hand before she realized that she wasn't the only one working here, catching a flash of movement out of the corner of her eye. Head tilted, she turned to give the other trainee a once-over, wondering if she'd forgotten his name or if she ever knew it in the first place.
"Pardon my intrusion - have we met?"

He started with the stomach - cutting a thin line down the body and breaking through the flesh, like he'd done with a frog in school. At least this thing wasn't slimy, but the way it's eyes stared at him...
He shut his eyes momentarily, trying to get the eyes out of his mind. No big deal - it was a dead creature. He could handle this thing. He could do it.
Returning to his work again, he was just about to pull open the skin flaps before someone was talking to him. He turned his head, giving her a quick appraisal. On the taller side, a little nerdy. Definitely someone who belonged in Life.
"Oh, I don't think we have." He smiled, thinking of offering his hand, and then immediately thinking better. "I'm Lex. And you...?"
