He needed a break. The smallest things were starting to get to him, and without the distractions like TV, movies, and going out to wind down, he was only left with the frustration of lab work, the monotony of Infirmary duty, and a world of battle training and sparing that he had lost a great deal of confidence in. The last mission might have shown improvement, but he felt like a very small gun among canons. It did a lot to a guy's pride, even when he knew it wasn't his field. It didn't matter though. Battle was what mattered here one way or another, and he didn't like feeling useless.
At Rep's comment about paying attention to the island more and mentions of the beach, Melvin decided to finally take up the task of finding the beach and actually going swimming. It seemed rather dangerous the first time he thought about it, but each passing day made it more and more appealing.
Getting a pair of swim trunks from the provisions master that, after some prodding, seemed brand new, he washed then and grabbed some things before heading out. With the trunks on, looking more like shorts, the plainest T-shirt he had (which he owed very few without Heavy metal logos on them), and a towel across the back of his neck, Melvin headed out of the dorms and towards where he saw that seemed to lead to the beach. If it was crowded, he'd walk around the beach to find a more secluded spot. He needed to get away and think.

Unfortunately for Melvin, getting away seemed to not quite be in his cards. He passed by a familiar face and almost immediately their curiosity drew them to investigate.
"Whatcha doin' Melvin?" Asked a voice from behind. Once he turned he'd find Rin smiling from ear to ear.

Melvin turned, surprised to see Rin out. Probably leaving the dorms or either coming back to them. Being a Lifer, hell being anything, meant you kept odd hours. She didn't look as if she spend all night in the labs at least, not with that perky attitude.
"Uh..." He was rather put on the spot, not expecting anyone to pop up suddenly and actually trying to avoid it. "...just out for a walk." A backpack was hanging by one strap on his back, holding some things in case he decided to spend longer out there. "...checking the beach."
He slowly backed away, ready to turn and go back to the trail.

He was right, she may have been up for a while but certainly not all night. She raised a brow curiously. He didn't look geared 'just for walk'. She was squinting suspiciously soon before suddenly inquiring, "May I come?"

He had been hoping for a private moment, and looking at Rin, he didn't know if telling her to ******** off would be the best right now. She had been by his side during the amusement park mission that it would be a major d**k move to then shoo her away. That sort of behavior might work for Rep, and seeing as he was still was Rin's friend, he wondered if he could test that sort of abuse on her.
However, he really wasn't in the element to start swearing with poor grammar. "I was actually going swimming so.." He hoped that she either didn't have a swimming outfit or that an activity best with two arms would dissuade her.

"Oh!" Rin actually looked delighted. "I have a bikini back in my room if I can come swim with you?" There was a biiig smile Melvin and it was all aimed at you. Do you really want to kick the puppy?

Mevin had a hard time kicking puppies, but maybe he could nudge it away with his shoe.
"Are you sure you should be swimming in your condition?"

"But... I still have a working arm?" The puppy felt the nudge but just rolled over assuming that foot was there for tummy rubs.
"This'll be a challenge!" Rin looked fired up now.

A challenge he hoped would tucker her out quickly. She'd go, swim, and be tired in a few minutes. One could only hope at least, and he held back an audible sigh at his own surrender. Rin wanted to come to the point that he couldn't come up with an excuse as to why she couldn't. If he had a friend, he could say he was meeting them for time with them, but Rin knew everyone he knew. This island sucked for it's small community.
"Alright. I'll wait for you to get your things." Hopefully she lost that swimsuit and wouldn't be able to come.

"Okay! Just, stay right there! I'll even bring you something, okay?!" She didn't wait for an answer. Rin was already turned around and off like a rocket towards the dorms.

Melvin watched Rin dash off. Groaning, he pressed his lips until they were a thin line. "I don't want you to bring me anything. I wanted to be alone."
Are you talking to me?
No. I'm talking to... He gestured vaguely where Rin ran off.
Yeah. You know she's gone.
Melvin rubbed his temple. "Shut up."
She can't here you.
The Lifer gave up, leaving Saliva confused.

Rin eventually returned, changed into her emerald green and somewhat sparkly bikini with a shower cap carefully taped over her... missing limb area. She hoped what worked for showers would work for a swim. She had a towel draped over her shoulders and a small something held carefully in her hand. A glint of silver chain around her neck alluded to the fact Byr was safely stowed away somewhere near to her heart.

Melvin had been checking his phone when Rin showed up, and he took a moment to look her over. He could tell she worked out, but he was more than amused with the shower cap. It probably wouldn't hold long. "You should take a shower when you get back to make sure nothing gets in that." He pointed vaguely at her missing arm, before noticing she wasn't wearing shoes. "Maybe wear shoes next time. I've been running with Sydney and the trails have a lot of junk on them." Walking barefoot just seemed wrong overall to him. Come on, Rin. You were better than some hippie.
Turning, he started to walk, though his own curiosity prodded him. "What's that in your hand?" He asked, making his tone sound hopefully uninterested and more conversational.

"I should though salt water is supposed to be good for injuries... then again, it's mostly closed already." She shrugged and then looked baffled as he seemed to take an exaggerated interest in her feet. "I uh.. I guess we can stop by the provisions master? I don't have any beach shoes and I just... I guess I kinda like the way the sand feels between my toes." She smiled at him, there was no shame from her about it Melvin, sorry.
"It's something you'll actually like," She reached for his hand to pass him the contents of her hand - a theater sized box of Red Hots. Well, half the contents of her hand. She coveted the bar of chocolate that was hidden beneath it for herself.

Melvin regarded her a moment and then shook his head. "Proabably best you don't get provisions dressed like that." There would plenty of camera recording the moment Rin walked in wearing nothing but a 2 piece. "Next time. You have to get through the trail before you get to the beach."
As she reached for his hand, his first instinct was to pull it back, but he stopped mid-motion before letting her take it and handing him the box. He was honestly surprised, looking at the box and back up at her. "Oh.." He hadn't been expecting candy, but then again, he wasn't sure what he was expecting. "Thank you. I haven't found anything but cinnamon gum in the vending machines." He had to wonder where she found Red Hots.
He placed the candies into his backpack, not wanting them to get lost or wet, and decided that Rin at least paid for her trip to the beach.
They headed down the trail, Melvin rather quiet as he looked around. He hadn't had a chance to really go on many trails here, only walking the minipets around and going between department buildings.
"Do you swim here a lot?" He asked finally, wondering.
