i was given the advice "make a loud sound" if my cat is scratching at something, since he would see me getting up and would stop and run away before i can make him stop myself... however, he ignores me. i've tried clapping, shouting, clapping and shouting, and he went on scratching and scratching until i made the move to actually stand up. the item in question that he scratches? there are 3 in my room. my laundry basket (made from some sort of fabric, not wicker or anything), the little storage container/stool thats made of some sort of fuzzy material, and the cardboard box my boyfriend keeps tshirts in.

what is your advice, fellow cat owners & lovers?

Do you have any cat scratchers?
yes, 2. one is in the livingroom, it's a wood scratching pole wrapped in denim, and infused with catnip spray. there is also a cardboard scratcher on the door of the hall closet next to my room. he uses both of these. but he also uses the wooden desk in the livingroom, the couch, my grandma's and boyfriends cardboard boxes, and my hamper. i also heard him scratching at the wood of my bed when he was underneath it one day,

we don't, we let him keep his claws natural. they'ere not overly-long, either.

It's possible that they're bothering him, though - that they're too long.

how can i tell if they're too long? my grandma is in charge of taking care of the cat, so she'd have to be the one clipping the claws (i do NOT trim animals claws, i nearly got mauled by a dog when i was trying to help someone trim it's nails, and now i'm terrified to try again. i'm also terrified of most dogs.

Check out the grooming section and see how and when to trim the kitties claws.

Secondly, get a scratcher in your room. They have nice over the door handle ones made of sisal etc and they are up and out of the way. Give him more things to do in the room itself to divert his attention.

My cat does this to the carpets and wont stop unless I get up or I whip out her Da Bird. :/

its just weird for me. we never trimmed any of our cats claws growing up, they just scratched trees to trim them (then again they were outdoor cats and in my place you're not allowed those)

Its helps pull off the old nail. The outer sheath so to speak. Look at your post scratcher sometime and see if theres little flakes left behind.

When their nails grow, it sheds, and we trim nails not only for the healths of our cats but to reduce destructive behaviors. Such as clawing the furniture and what not.

I never did the nail trimming thing either; it just never even crossed my mind! So I was hugely dreading trimming Minstrel's nails and have been putting it off since we got him, despite the fact that he occasionally got caught in the curtain. But we finally gave it a shot yesterday and he was wonderful about it. I don't think he even realised I was doing anything unusual and although he did decide to leave before I finished, I think that had more to do with the fact that he just doesn't like being held for too long.

So, it sounds scary, but things are better when it's done. smile

i hope my Tom will be as receptive lol i remmeber trying to cut my dogs nails when i was younger, and theyd be twisting and turning and yelping... and crying like i was hurting them, even though i was just trying to hold them so my parents could trim their nails. they'd do the "pained yelping" even before we got a clipper near their paw.
