Roaring.

A dull noise so loud it covered everything else, a sun that burned almost cold, the wind covered in fragments of what felt like sharp glass. Sand that snagged under the lightest resistance, fragments, bones, piercing through the pliable surface.

There was nothing else but the hot desert wind: each piece of exposed skin rubbed raw by the sand tunnels within seconds. At the best, they would see everything in a hazy white, though for long periods of time, their vision was rendered blind. The torrent never subsided.

OOC

Welcome to the Sahara hell:

- Ryan and Kat must attempt their best to stay alive, so to speak. Roll 1d100 and match your dice to the results below. Both characters start off at 30 stamina. Once they hit 0 they are on the verge of unconsciousness and can move no longer. Keep on rolling until you hit 0, or your character is free to give up even before then.
1- 20: The sand underneath you folds, pushing you downwards, as you land at a strange angle on your foot. Something scrapes against your leg, ripping your pants just slightly, drawing blood. - 10 stamina
21-40: The wind picks up, louder now, you change to see if you can catch anything, as a particularly large buffet of wind renders you temporarily blind. -10 stamina
41 - 60: You pause as for a second you feel like you hear something. Voices calling to you perhaps? They sound familiar... but you can't see anything other than endless sand and wind - 5 stamina
61 - 80: You see in the distance what looks like a patch of green. Did you make it? Your throat burns, it feels parched, as raw as your skin. You make a run for the oasis. No matter how far you run, the green moves further away. - 10 stamina
81 - 100: You hear a loud crack, as you look down. You've stepped on what looks like a mostly in-tact skull, the skin still barely clinging onto a half-mutilated body. It smells horribly, and you feel a strange sticky ooze against the base of your foot... -5 stamina.

To Ryan's question, she only gave him a questionable look. Yeah, 'cause she knew the Sahara like the back of her hand. "If I was an expert, or knew how to navigate this place, I would tell you. Unfortunately, we're both s**t out of luck on that. Lets just.." She paused, faced a random direction, and started walking. "go this way." Wandering around until they died of heat exhaustion was better than sitting around and dying she supposed.

At one point, she would have loved to come back to the Sahara, but this.. knowing what was out there, and that they could get offed at any moment, that was something she didn't want to come back to.

With the sun directly over them, she almost wished she had kept her coat to at least wrap it around her shoulders or something. She was going to have a nasty sunburn, but that was surely the least of her problems at this moment. Caelius sure knew how to dish out a good punishment for insubordination. She was ready to start taking bets on what might kill them first. Part of her hoped it was the heat exhaustion.

With the wind growing louder, she took a hesitant glance over her shoulder, only to get blinded by the sudden burst of wind. Whether she was cursing or not was hard to tell, what with the wind. Though, her goggles found their way over her eyes.

Finally, a use for the damn things. Too bad she still couldn't see anything at all.

Kat's sarcasm was not appreciated, but he supposed it couldn't be helped. He was likely going to be just as snippy as she was. They were, after all, stranded in a desert without a hope in the world of actually making it out of it alive. Especially if, God forbid, something showed up.

"Fine by me." He muttered, tugging his hood up over his had and pulling the scarf over his mouth. It wouldn't do much for the heat, unfortunately, but at least it would keep the worst of the sun off of him and the sand from flying into his mouth and hopefully his eyes. Kat on the other hand...

He paused, tugging the kerchief around his waist free, turning to the ex-sun trainee. "Here," He tapped her shoulder, once, after she was finished readjusting her goggles. Though a little too late, given that the sand had pretty much blinded her. "take this and drape it over your head and shoulders." Now he pressed the cloth into her hands, so that she could feel just what he was holding out to her. Once it was in her hands, he pressed on. Though the further they walked, the more he swore he could hear something. Someone calling him... The wind perhaps? Or maybe it was...

If Kat could see, she would find that Ryan was looking over his shoulder from time to time. For a wile, he even wondered if Caelius had thrown any other hunters into the sand box. But every time he searched he found nothing. Not a sign of life out here aside from Kat.

A little startled by Ryan's approach, Kat jumped when he tapped her shoulder to offer her his wrap. At first, she had no idea what it was that he was handing her, but soon figured it out. "Thanks.." She muttered, wrapping it around her head and shoulder. Well, at least that would help protect her from the blasted sun.

Pressing on, she had already lost track at how long they had been stuck out here, but it felt like hours. Her energy was draining, it felt like she was in an oven, her skin was rubbed raw from all the sand blowing around, and she was thirsty. If she liked the desert before, she definitely hated it now. It didn't help that the sand lodged in her eyes still blinded her. Lifting her goggles, she attempted to wipe a bit of the sand clear, when the sand shifted and she lost her balance. "Ow!" Landing on an awkward footing, she cursed aloud again as her leg scraped against something, followed by a distinctive sound of ripping fabric and a sharp pain. Unable to see what it was, she got back to her feet and continued on.

She had sudden regret for not taking a shot at Caelius when she had the chance. At least her death might have been quicker than this.

Ryan turned at the sharp cry of pain. At first he was alarmed at the sudden noise. Fortunately it wasn't anything dangerous, nor was it so severe that some disinfectant and bandages wouldn't--right... bandages. With Locke gone, he didn't have anything usable on him. Well, other than the kerchief anyways.

"Hold on a sec." He called, walking back a few feet towards Kat and right into something crunchy and unpleasant. "God... I swear this desert has been nothing but--" A pause as the putrid smell wafted up to his nose. The fact that it was stuck to the bottom of his boot didn't help matters much either. In fact, he was lucky he hadn't grabbed anything to eat that morning, otherwise he would have hurled on the spot. "I hate this place." He finished miserably and tore a strip off of the kerchief, using it to bandage where Kat managed to cut herself.

"That should hold we'll have to re bandage it when we get out of this sand. I can't see s**t, so I can't tell how bad it is. Come on." He caught hold of her wrist, tugging her along.

Pausing, she waited for Ryan when he called out for her to stop. At this time, she took the chance to remove more of the sand from her eyes. At least now, she had some vision back, if barely. "It stings.." Whether she was referring to the cut, or to the sand in her eyes, she didn't specify. With Ryan having temporarily bandaging her leg, she re-adjusted her goggles and nodded to him. "Thanks, again."

Ryan might not have eaten anything that morning to lose to the smell, but anything that Kat had eaten was up and out when she first caught the sent. Luckily, she missed Ryan. "Ugh..well, that is just the cherry on top of everything." Wiping the her mouth with the back of her hand, she turned and started back in the direction they were walking again, with Ryan's help.

More time went by when she finally lifted her goggles, as if to get a better look at something. "H-hey! Hey! Look! Over there!" The ex-hunter pointed frantically at what would appear as nothing to Ryan before she pulled free of his hold and ran in the direction. Was it an oasis? Maybe there was water? Or shade even!

Her whole body was aching, her mouth felt as dry as the desert, and she didn't even appear to be getting any closer to that bit of green in the distance. By the time she realized it was a mistake to waste her energy chasing after what was apparently a mirage, she already collapsed from exhaustion.

"Its a cut, its going to. But I'm pretty sure it looks worse than it is." He have her a pat on the shoulder and continued to tug her along. "You're going to live." Despite his teasing, it was forced. There was no cheeriness present in his voice. He just sounded tired, and while he managed to keep himself from barfing Kat didn't. Which if he recalled, was what did make him puke the first time he came here.

Oh hell no! He was not going to make a habit out of puking in the desert! No thank you!

With a barely audible groan, he tugged her forward again, stepping out of the mess, while cringing as his feet slid across the sand. It was grotesque, but it would come off after the next fifty miles or so. Maybe. Really, it could have been worse.

"H-hey! Hey! Look! Over there!"

Ryan's head snapped up after what seemed like several hours, tugging his scarf down to see what exactly it was she was yelling about. It was a mistake. Just as the scarf came down, a strong gust of wind assaulted him, carrying with it sand, all of which flew right into his eyes. "Ugh! Kat stop!" He called, rubbing furiously at his eyes and stumbling blindly along after the ex-trainee. If Kat could hear him now, there was a steady stream of curses. Curses which didn't stop until he stumbled and tripped over the other ex-trainee. Who now, after all that running, had collapsed onto the ground.

"Kat.." Came the muffled grumble in the sand. "Give me your goggles." He didn't wait for a reply and instead, snatched them right off of her head. They weren't going to do her any good now. Not with her laying dead on the ground like that. Well okay. Almost dead, but still, she was out of it. Which meant...

"C'mon Kat, get up..." He tugged at her once, twice, and gave her a light swat. Nothing. She made no move to rise. Goody. "You're just wanting me to carry you out of here, aren't you?" Another attempt at teasing, though this time, he couldn't help the concerned look as he hoisted her off the ground and slumped her over his back. Which was harder than it looked, with only one usable arm.

It was just the sun. She was tired. After a little rest, she would be okay.

Hours. It had been hours and still there was no sign of any shade. The sun had traveled some distance in the sky, but was still beating down on them with no sign of the torrent of wind giving up anytime soon. Worse. He got the sneaking suspicion that he might have gone in a full circle after he picked up Kat and if that wasn't bad enough, Kat had barely moved since she collapsed. It was only the faint breath on his neck that assured him that she was even still alive.

"C'mon Kat, you're tougher than this. Don't give Caelius the satisfaction of dying out here. Not now." Though he said that, he could feel that his own energy depleting. If this continued and they didn't find shelter soon, he wasn't sure how much further they would get before the scavengers of the desert would be picking at their bodies as well.

Not long that was for sure.

He cursed again, readjusting the goggles before he hoisted Kat up higher onto his back. He had even managed to make it fair distance further before something tore at both the fabric of his pants and his leg, forcing him to the ground and dropping Kat. "Ugh! s**t... damn it!" He hissed out, seeing to Kat first and making sure she wasn't breathing in any sand, before he checked his own leg. Which, fortunately, had minor cut, compared to some of the cuts he had seen over his time in Deus. However, with his energy spent, Kat unconscious, and now an injured leg, he wasn't sure he could keep this up.

"Sorry Kat... I think we're ********: 0

Nothing changed.

The desert sun grew cold as the hours ticked by, the storm of sand residing. All directions, miles and miles of silence. The wind picked up again, just slightly, curling over a light bit of resistence: tattered fabric and sunken flesh. Two bodies in a sea of many. Two would-be Hunters, two who were promised the world, power, the ability to help out, protect, belong, and leave their world to make a difference, that they would never live nor die alone.

In the end, nothing changed.

More time had passed but still there was no change. It was quiet, far more quiet than he was used to. Especially now when there was no voice in his head to annoy or distract him. It was a desert after all. A desert and a sea of dead. There was no one here and no one was coming. This was punishment after all. Their 'reward' for trying to follow what they 'believed' was right, even if that meant breaking the rules and defying what it meant to be a hunter.

Hunter... what did that even mean. He didn't understand. He left behind his family, his home, everything he was familiar with, all for the chance to protect. A way to keep others from dying. A chance at stop it. So why was it, when he was confronted with that very thing he signed up to prevent, why was it that that was the time he was told to forget his job and to told to kill? it wasn't right. It didn't make sense. Neither Ceres nor Bix were dead. Nor was it confirmed they had no chance of recovering. So why was it so bad that they fought for a chance to save them?

Ryan lifted the goggles momentarily, rubbing away the sand that had managed to find its way past. Kat had was alive and breathing, but she was still out cold. Maybe it was the stress on top of everything. There was only so much one could handle after all.

He frowned, tucking the kerchief up around her face and shoulders. The sun was no longer overheard, but with the sky darkening and the night air would leave the ex-sun trainee chilled. Once he was sure the kerchief wouldn't fly away on her, he pulled his own hood tighter around himself and allowed his mind to wander.

Caelius was right about one thing. He was unfit to be a hunter. He would never be able to mindlessly follow orders. He always had to think on it. Decide for himself between right and wrong. If being a hunter meant to forgo all that, to simply fall in line, and do as instructed without question... Then he would never be able to stand with them. Never be one of them and he would never agree with them. He would sacrifice a lot. But he drew the line at abandoning a life that could still be saved. A foolish choice maybe. But it was who he was, something he would never be able to change. If he had been one hundred percent sure there was no hope in the world of saving either Bix or Ceres, then yes, he would have killed them himself. But nothing was confirmed. They didn't even try. That was what he couldn't get past. Not that they were ordered to kill. But that Caelius didn't even try to help them. He would never forgive him for that. Not while he still drew breath.

He shivered, swaying a little where he sat. It was already such a drastic change in temperature compared to the scorching heat they were experiencing not too long ago. He regretted not having something warmer with him.

Regret... right.

He had a few regrets, sure. Many in fact. For instance, if he had known Locke would have been punished for his choices, he would have thought twice before he turned his claws on Caelius. But he never thought about that. He had been too caught up in his anger to think and Locke paid the price for that. Another regret was not actually landing a hit when he did decide to attack him. Just once he would have loved to hit that b*****d. But what did it matter now? In the end they failed their job, despite going against orders so that they could protect those infected, they still fell. Even though both Bix and Ceres were alive now, many others were currently teetering on the edge of having their own lives taken in return.

It was bull s**t.

Surely they wouldn't be killed. They, in spite of defying orders, were good hunters. Caelius probably just wanted to scare them in a way to keep the same thing from happening in future. If he truly thought they were beyond help, he wouldn't have given them a second chance.

That left Kat.

"I'm sorry Kat. I'll make sure you get out of here..." He tried to sound earnest, but really, he wasn't even sure they would survive the night. Even now, his eye lids were drooping and his body yearned for sleep. He was tired. Tired of everything.

Maybe, just a minute...

It was probably a mistake to close his eyes and allow himself to slip into that darkness. But really, it was just one mistake on top of many now, and who was counting?

Drifting from consciousness to unconsciousness, Kat would hear Ryan speaking to her, but would be too tired to answer back, or barely even hear his words. She felt like a fool for using her last bit of energy chasing after something that wasn't even there. If she was smart, and had used her brain, she would have been able to tell, or at least clue in, that it was nothing more than a mirage.

With no ability to tell time out here, she had given up how much time had passed, or how long Ryan had managed to carry her though the desert. Just one more thing for her to feel guilty over.. making an injured guy carry her when she was dumb and passed out. If they did manage to survive this hell, she would be in his debt.

It was both a blessing and a curse when the sun passed over and began to set. It was no longer cooking the two of them alive, but now they had to deal with the dropping temperatures. Honestly, she would rather cook to death, rather than freeze. Shivering, she could feel someone, Ryan, tucking the fabric in around her to keep her from getting chilled, but barely acknowledged it.

She felt like a fool. She knew that defying orders as she did would land her in a s**t load of trouble. She knew that, yet still she did it anyways. But.. she was scared! Scared to lose one of the few friends she had made. She had heard, by others, that they had actually survived the whole ordeal. They actually survived! So maybe the hunters were right to attack them? But how was she to know? Well.. there was no use fretting over it now. She had made her choice, and if she was back in that position again, and thought it the only way, she would do it again. Though, she would probably have refrained from pulling a stupid stunt like trying to attack Caelius, even if she so badly wanted to.

With each passing moment, she could feel herself growing colder, her body going numb. Maybe this was finally it? Well, it was certainly better than meeting her fate at the hands of Caelius or the horsemen. It might have been selfish to think this way, but she was happy, in a way. She was cast out to die, but she wasn't alone. Ryan was here with her, where as other hunters were not so fortunate. They had met far worse fates then this.

But then again, she was no longer a hunter. She should really stop comparing herself to them.

Slowly, her consciousness began to fade again. She no longer had the will to keep herself from dozing off. The void was actually quite welcomed at this point. She might not have accomplished anything, she may not have been able to save anyone, or anything, but she was at least content with some of the choices in her life.

She could rest now.

THE END.

Nightmares. The two would have nightmares of walking continuously along infinite sand, of their skin blistering, burning, festering, body literally collapsing as the wind continued to howl. They woke up to the same nightmare, an eternity walking and struggling-

-drip-

-The sand again now, screaming relentlessly-

-drip-

-And yet the dead did not dream.

The first thing both would feel, long before their half-blinded eyes tried seeing, or raw, split lips speaking, was a strange dark mossy green. Dark, dank, and oddly cool, the stone pressed against their skin a strange comforting feeling, quiet and soothing.

Drip.

The sound of water was almost infuriating as it came from nowhere, taunting their parched sandpaper throats, the burning sensation folded by hundreds with each thought and movement.

Everything hurt. Everything burned.

Clank.

They couldn't see well. They couldn't speak well. Yet even in that dank prison, a strange and sad solace, they could still feel. Someone was watching them.

The nightmares were as relentless and unforgiving as the desert. Regardless of time or place, they went on and on, without break and without an end in sight.

Trapped.

Maybe this was the punishment Caelius meant for them to have. Not to die in the desert, but to relive it, day in and day out so that they could continue to live, regret and suffer for the choices they have made.

It would certainly beat his expectations of punishments, that was for sure.

drip

Suddenly it was gone. Replaced entirely by the darkness and a fit of coughing that forced him awake and pain that followed was so extreme that it left him dazed and barely able to move.

But the fact that he even felt pain at all meant he was...

Alive.

How? He should have died back there and yet he was here. How was he--? Or better yet, who had found him and how? Not a hunter surely... Especially after what had happened. So who?

It was a question he wasn't quite ready to answer for himself. Truth be told, he didn't want to know. Not right now. He didn't want to find that he had awoken from some 'dream' only to find himself trapped in a real nightmare. So instead he focused on the one task he could manage that would occupy his mind. Which was getting up off of the ground. A simple task. But after spending God knows how long in the desert and with the damage done to his skin... it would be a long while before the pain would subside. In other words...

Just rolling over was going to be a b***h.

Fortunately for him, in the end, he did manage it. But at the cost of some intense pain and nearly blacking out again. It was by some force of will alone that he hadn't. But that alone wasn't enough,

Ryan bit his already cracked and bleeding lip, sliding his one good arm beneath his chest, and using it to slowly push away from the ground. But the more distance he gained the more it hurt.

Calm down and endure it. I just have to endure it a little further and--

Pain

It was too much. The pain forced him to the ground again, where he could lay against the cold, smooth surface of floor. Twisting onto his side in a way that he managed to keep himself from laying on his injured arm. But now what should he do? He couldn't stay here like this. He could barely even see! In fact, the most he was aware of, since coming to his senses, was that he was somewhere dark and damp. A welcome change--if he knew where the hell he was! That and if that damned dripping stopped. Because with every drop, he was reminded just how painfully dry his throat was and how much he craved water. It was as cruel a torture as any.

More time had passed and still, all was silent. In spite of this, now that he had settled for simply laying on the ground and gave up on struggling, he finally became aware of the 'other' presence in the room.

"Who.." He started to speak, wincing, not only from the pain, but from the sound of his voice that he couldn't recognize as his own. "Who's there?"

Come to think of it... Where was Kat? Was she here too? Was she even still alive?

The horror that was the Sahara desert just seemed to go on forever. She couldn't even remember when it was they had been cast out of Deus and into this hell. It seemed like forever ago, as this nightmare repeated itself over and over again.

Caelius, that colossal p***k..! Killing them for insubordination was one thing, but to throw them out here, unprepared--he was an a**. If she died, she swore, she would spend the rest of her time haunting that b*****d!

-drip-

Over time, the constant sound of water finally snapped her out of the ever constant dream, only to wake in some dark, dank place. It was a welcomed change from the Sahara, but the difference in temperature sent a chill down her spine. The only thing that she didn't like, is that she had no idea of where she was. Well.. she might of had some suspicions, but hoped she was wrong on that.

-drip-

That dripping was starting to get old..

Placing her hand to the cold, stone floor, she struggled to move, quickly regretting the idea. Well, the bit of them walking through the desert wasn't a dream after all. Her whole body felt like s**t! Cracking an eye open ever so slightly, she found nothing at all. Not a damn thing! Hopefully the blindness was a temporary thing. To be stuck somewhere, unarmed and blinded.. well that would just suck--more than it already did.

The unseen attention on them didn't go unnoticed either. Though, she was a little nervous just to find out who it was that was standing there.

Be it horsemen or hunter..

A little startled when Ryan--that was Ryan right? Damn son! Your voice!--broke the silence to voice his question, Kat remained quiet. Eager and hesitant to hear the reply.

Though the occupants couldn't see quite that well, even as their eyes tried to adjust, there were some things already loud, visible enough to notice. One was proximity: the two occupants were seperated quite a distance from each other. And the second was they gaze of something staring their general proximity before stepping away, footsteps growing more and more distant, though their pace was by far urgent.

Time passed. At least by now, Kat and Ryan would be able to see better, though there was nothing that would ease the pain and perpetual burning of their skin or the raw hunger gnawing at their insides.

Footsteps, three of them now. A voice, female, unfamiliar. "I shall speak with them myself."

Another loud clank, and the vague outline of a flowing figure in dark crimson robes. A smell, odd and sweet, that wafted from her direction. White flowers.

"Humans," her voice again, "You have travelled a long way from your abode: please, I am rather curious as to your arrival here as well. Tell me everything, and leave no details behind. We mean no harm to you as long as you follow out ways."

Something was pushed their direction. Water. Slightly stale bread.
