Sailor Varuna staggered backwards against the brick wall of the alley way, panting as she tried to catch her breath. Her hands fluttered over her chest, just above her heart, clutching to the edge of some kind of collar that fell from her shoulders, hanging there comfortably, as if it was supposed to be worn that way.

The night had been cold when she first made her way home from campus, having stayed late to study. But now, despite the lack of the old and worn winter coat, she wasn't freezing as she thought she should be.

Maybe it was the magic...?

No... that was impossible. And yet...

Why would there be monsters in Destiny City...? Real monsters? Not the hoaxes the media went on about when there was nothing else going on, but real monsters with teeth and claws...?

She wasn't sure what to think. Maybe this was just a dream? But it seemed so real. The monster had been there, and then came a cat. A talking cat. It gave her a pen--

Where was her pen??

Varuna glanced frantically around for the strange object but couldn't find it. She'd done what the cat said, desperate to defend herself regardless of how silly it seemed. She'd said "Varuna Power Makeup" and she'd been transformed into this strange... stronger person. She could feel the energy pulsing through her, the magic that... she now had...?

Kallichore had felt a strange and sudden flare of energy, like a white light running across her vision. It was like watching a shooting star up close. The eternal could almost feel the pulsing heat and light on her cheeks and the bridge of her nose but... where was it coming from?

Once the light had died down to a simmer, Kallichore had felt it was someone new. It had to be. That sort of signature was strong and energetic but did not flare as it does when it is first born. Or so she thought. This was the first time she'd been nearby when something like this happened. The eternal assumed it was an awakening. She could feel a youma and a cat for a moment but now they were both gone. The senshi signal remained. Did they need help?

Against her usual judgment, Kallichore decided to investigate. She dropped down quickly from atop the office building on which she was perched and hit the ground running like a white rocket. She quickly closed the distance between herself and the signal and slowed to a walk when she felt she was above whoever they were. Instead of dropping down like she normally would, Kallichore was slowly becoming more aware of how... scary that could be and, coupled with her disheveled appearance, how traumatizing that experience might be to a newbie.

We couldn't have that.

Instead, Kallichore jumped down to street level using a side alley and walked slowly out into the other person's view. "Are you alright?" she asked, trying to keep her voice even and calming. Whoever they were, they seemed incredibly distressed. "I felt some energy and came over to see if you needed help?" The girl, she realized, was a blonde in a very flattering fuku. She was shaking. "Are you alright?" repeated the gray haired eternal.

”Are you alright?”

Varuna could hear a young woman’s voice nearby, but she didn’t turn towards her or even acknowledge her presence — she was still in too much shock.

And then realization drew slowly on her. The fact that she could feel this woman, this powerful force approaching her... the fact that she didn’t have to look to see, but to be able to just feel as she had felt the creature’s energy disappear, just as the cat who had spoken to her disappeared.

Her heart pounded, unknowing of what to do, or how to feel, what to think.

Finally, the new senshi turned her face towards the clearly more experienced senshi, only to be alarmed at the sight of her clothing. They were torn and damaged, but how? Had she been attacked as well? Were there other monsters out there that were even worse than the one she’d faced??

Tears filled her eyes against her will, more scared than she probably should be. She hadn’t been hurt, had she? No... she’d been the one to kill the creature that had attacked her. But the fact still remained that she didn’t know what was going on, and without that understanding, she was unable to decide how else to react.

No... She shook her head slowly, her distress clear in response to the woman’s question. No, she wasn’t alright...

Christa was never known for opening up and being particularly warm to people. The only people she felt safe with emotionally were Melinda and her brother Zach. She was slowly warming up to Pasiphae, Ganymede and Tsui, and to some lesser extent, Valhalla. They were, after all, a team. They worked in unison and they deserved her trust. They deserved more than what she was able to provide at that time. It was a sharp knife of guilt she felt in her heart when this girl couldn't even form the words to explain how overwhelmed and upset she was.

Kallichore swallowed an almost insurmountable measure of guilt and downright dread. Could she do this? Could she even try to comfort someone she didn't even know when she had such a hard time comforting those she was close to?

Stepping closer to the poor new senshi, who seemed to be awakened and then thrown to the wolves, Kallichore opened her arms. Her sleeves almost made her look like a disheveled bat or perhaps a white dove, but she hoped she didn't appear too frightening. The eternal lowered her voice as much as she could. "It's alright. I won't let anything happen to you." I'm sorry you were abandoned but I'll pick up where the cat left off. If there's anything you deserve, it's support. It's a network of people to help you. This isn't easy. You didn't ask for this...

Kallichore looked her over. "Are you hurt? Do you want to sit down?" Before she could go further, the gray haired senshi kicked herself mentally. How can she try to help this girl by being a total stranger? "I'm Sailor Kallichore. Do you know your name?"

When things scared her, she did her best not to let it bother her. There was no sense in being fearful of things that may or may not happen, or even when afraid of things to be rationally afraid of, such as someone she cared for getting hurt, she did her best not to let it overwhelm her. She didn’t want to be consumed by fear, because then... fear would win, wouldn’t it?

But this was a different kind of fear. She had no idea what was going on, and... she’d heard rumors of terrorists... of people being mysteriously killed... monsters and young women and men in strange outfits...

Deep plum purple eyes stared at the senshi, still in shock at her state of dress, unsure for a few moments if she was opening her arms to show that she was unharmed, or if she had another reason. Seeing that her outfit must have been torn up in a previous event and that she was not currently injured, Varuna let out a shaky sigh of relief. But she didn’t move forward to practically collapse against the young woman until she’d promised nothing would happen.

It wasn’t the biggest sense of relief she could have felt, but it definitely helped for the time being. She had no idea who this woman was, but if she was offering her help, she was happy to take it.

She shook her head in response once more in response to Kallichore’s question about being hurt, her face now buried against the senshi’s shoulder. And another shake of ‘no’ to sitting down. But... if she could just vanish, maybe it would be better. There were only a few things she really wanted in her life, and being alone as she was, well...

“Rhiannon,” she said not sure if she should be happy or upset that she could still remember her name. Despite being afraid of what she didn’t know, she felt she could be happy no longer existing as Rhiannon...

And then she realized what Kallichore had meant and she hesitated, as if trying to remember... but it wasn’t difficult to remember. It echoed in her very soul. Even if there hadn’t been a talking cat, she would have known her name the moment she transformed.

“Varuna...”

Kallichore let out a sigh of relief and wrapped her sleeved arms around the senshi. She wasn't sure how to comfort someone without drawing upon her own experiences of being comforted. What would Melinda do? Reaching up one gloved hand, the eternal carefully petted the girl's hair in a gesture she hoped wasn't creepy. "It's nice to meet you, Varuna." Rhiannon. I don't know that name but she'll get used to her new one in time.

Pulling back, brown eyes met plum in genuine concern.

"I know this is a great deal to take in and I wish the cat hadn't abandoned you, but I will not." explained the eternal, stern in features and in voice. This is precisely why I made the primer but it does little when the senshi is so new that she doesn't even know she has a cellphone... "Take a moment and rest. This is all very overwhelming, I know. No one will blame you for being scared."

Kallichore looked out around them and then at the ground, performing a quick mental scan. No Chaos signals in the immediate area. They were safe. "There's no one else around, not even the monsters. But even if there were, you're strong enough to defend yourself. You should be proud. Not everyone can defeat a youma when they first awaken..." The eternal paused. Start from the beginning. "The youma... that is what we call the monsters. We have the power to fight them."

Varuna seemed slightly less shaky but Kallichore didn't want to move away in case the senshi became upset. "...do you remember if the cat told you anything? Anything about who you are or what we do?"

Strange, saying it was nice to meet her when she had no idea what was going on. Or maybe it wasn’t that strange, but just kind words said to make her feel better? Regardless of the meaning, Varuna held tightly to the Eternal, afraid that she might leave her there, too, even with her promise.

People made promises all the time, but they always broke them. Why should it be any different with this woman? She may be saying nice things now but once she was tired of her, she’d leave.

“Youma...” she repeated softly, trying the word out for herself, her brows narrowed slightly in confusion as she peered up at Kallichore. “Why...?” she started, looking as though she wanted to ask a million different questions. Why were they there? What did these youma want from them? Why were they supposed to kill them? Why were these youma trying to kill them...?

But questions like that often fell on deaf ears and Varuna closed her mouth and lowered her head in submission, figuring that if it was important enough she would be told... if it wasn’t, or if it wasn’t worth the effort to tell her, then... no use boring this young woman with senseless babble.

“If... I wanted to live...” Varuna said slowly, recalling what the cat had said to her, “To pick up the pen and say Varuna Power Makeup... and that Snow Slip was the name of my attack but...” How could she have magic...? She was just another nobody in this world, she was poor, living off of the generosity of a kind aunt, she had no real talents, she was only decent in school, her own mother wanted almost nothing to do with her, her father has been gone from her life for years and years... why now? Why was she being pulled into this now?

Tears filled her eyes, not because she was scared this time, but because she was frustrated with how much she wanted to know and wanted to ask, but couldn’t force herself to voice them. So instead she hid her face against Kallichore’s shoulder, clinging almost desperately to her, hoping she would let her know something...

Kallichore nodded. "Youma, yes. They're monsters, fueled by Chaos to crawl all over the Earth and harm people. They eat energy and starseeds. They're like lions and we're like gazelle, I suppose. Only the powers of good can stop them. We're the gazelles with guns and night vision goggles, as it were. We save lives every night like this. It's how we keep the city safe..."

Varuna then took the eternal's shoulders and wept. Sleeves wrapped around her again. "...I know they don't ask you whether you want to or not, and there's no real way to know what you're getting into until it's too late." came the slow, even reply. Indeed there was no way to know just how deep the war ran beneath the hot pavement of Destiny City. There was no way to understand until one simply experienced these things, but not everyone was ready for such an undertaking even if their starseed said otherwise. "...but not everyone has this power. That is what makes you special, Varuna. And not in the top-of-your-class kind of special, either. Not everyone can boast a starseed with the incredible potential yours has."

The eternal pulled back and, for a moment, expressed a sisterly kind of concern for the blond. Gloves of red started to fix portions of Varuna's hair to keep them from the senshi's eyes. "I know it's terrifying. Believe me, we were all there once. I was ambushed walking home from the library. At the time, the only thing on my mind was an essay I had to write about the literary significance of symbolism. All the stars in the sky couldn't have pulled me from that essay but the universe had other plans."

Kallichore leaned down as if to encourage Varuna to lift her eyes. "...the universe has its own way of telling us we're ready for something big. But you have one thing I didn't when I first awakened - support. You have me and the people I know. We'll protect you, train you, keep you safe." She stopped for a moment, considering a few things. "...that is, if you are willing to keep at this. No one will blame you if you decide not to but destiny has a way of being rather... persistent. It's not meant to scare you; just a bit of advice."

Some of these things were still confusing to Varuna, even as Kallichore tried to explain. Keeping the city safe? Saving lives? Gazelles with guns and night vision goggles? It was all too much to take in at once, but there was also something comforting about Kallichore’s voice. The fact that she wasn’t alone made this so much more tolerable, at the very least.

It was still a lot to take in, of course, but as the senshi continued to speak, Varuna realized that maybe there was a reason for this...

Varuna lifted her eyes as prompted, reaching up a hand and sleeve to rub at her face, knowing that her cheeks and eyes were probably blotchy and red by this point. She just... felt so pathetic, and Kallichore was so nice, and she didn’t feel worthy at all...

“I can do this,” she said quietly once she was able to control herself enough to stop crying as much. She might be scared and frustrated, but... there were more like her, right...? If they could do it... if she had a bigger purpose in this life... why not...? She didn’t think she was all that special, but she was different from others in her life...

“Thank you,” she said just as softly, feeling embarrassed now that she’d made such a big deal over everything... She would just have to try and do her best...

Kallichore rested a hand on Varuna's shoulders. "I know it's a great deal of information and it will take a while to sink in, but allow yourself that time. If you need to, go slowly. There's nothing wrong with that. Not everyone has this sort of power bestowed upon them and there isn't a manual to refer to. However." With a flick of her wrist, the eternal senshi summoned her cellphone from subspace, entering in a picture of Varuna for safekeeping. "When you feel ready, you can access a primer I've had help in developing. It will give you the basics you need, whenever you need them."

Another flick of the wrist and the phone was gone. "Another trick you'll learn - summoning your cellphone. It's how we communicate. But we'll get to that later. One thing at a time." The eternal looked off into the distance, performed a scan, and found them still alone. Looking up at the moon, Kallichore frowned. It was probably all too much for Varuna but it wouldn't hurt to simply ask, right?

Kallichore motioned up to the moon with her head. "Speaking of cellphones..." Summoning hers back out of subspace, Kallichore caressed the pearl charm she'd received after first visiting the moon, after that terrible ambush. "These allow us to travel through space, to our homeworlds and to the moon, right up there. Since it's closer to home, and I know this is probably quite a shock..." The eternal sighed for a moment. "Would you like me to take you?"

Varuna stared at her, confused as to what she was telling her. Space, the moon...? And yet... It was all very sudden. What if she wasn't ready for this? What if she was just forcing herself to be okay, to appear not as weak and pathetic as she felt.

But here was Kallichore, there to offer her help and advice, and while she didn't feel as if she could trust her completely, she felt that maybe one day she could. This patience she was being shown... maybe that was all she needed to really be okay.

The senshi slowly nodded her head before glancing up at the moon. Was it even possible? It must be if Kallichore suggested it, right? Instinctively, she reached out to take hold of the Eternal's free hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze as if to promise that she was really going to be okay.

Varuna closed her eyes, waiting for something to happen, wishing she really could be somewhere away from this place, this horrible world that didn't seem to have a chance for redemption... And yet, maybe it did... Maybe they, as senshi, had the opportunity to really change things. Or maybe she was getting in too deep and needed to get her feet back on the ground.

The light that showered upon them was silver and beautiful and it felt as though a choir of angels should sing of their ascent. The pillar had the power to lift the two senshi from the ground, freeing them from the restrictions of the Earth and gravity. It was then that they ascended, two angels, to the voided silver surface of the moon. The journey would take them but an instant but would stay with them forever.

Once their feet touched the ground again, a great expanse of ruined kingdom greeted them. It was not a sad sight, but more of a somber, quiet one. It was a placid sea over which they watched from a riverbank, the quiet settling of snow on a winter's night. There was death here once, but there was also a kind of life and vibrancy unique to the Silver Millennium. What little of it Kallichore knew made her wish she was alive then to see it in all its splendor. Toppled pillars and ruined rooftops sat in silence, a faint sound of wind rustling met their ears.

"Varuna, welcome to the Moon."
