The only thing that marked the bundle's arrival was a soft, barely audible thump - indeed, Malodore might have missed it if not for Luce, who immediately looked at the door suspiciously, growling low in her chest. "Che cose e?" the plague doctor murmured, getting up and padding over to the door, opening it even as Luce slipped through the door itself in mist-form.
She whined as Malodore bent down and picked up the bundle, faint wisps of fog brushing against its side as she reformed into full solidity. The plague doctor's suspicion cleared entirely once it realized who the bundle was from. The glowing centipede wrapped around it made the sender rather obvious. "Don't bite that," it warned as Luce bristled at the bug. Hmm...
String? Oh, dear, and it was hideously tangled up, too. The note gave it pause. Was there truly a lesson to be learned in this snarl of knots? If it were any other professor, it would be rather skeptical, but it trusted Cricket. "Very well, then..." It shooed Luce back inside and carried the packet in with it, absently setting the centipede on its lab table before sitting down with the thread in its lap. A few tugs showed that the snarl was so tightly wound that it would have a hard time getting even its dextrous claws through a loop to begin...

Hm. It rolled the tangle over, looking for another likely starting place, but the cord may as well have been a solid mass for all the opportunities it presented.

Maybe here...? It worked its smallest claw into a loop and tugged, getting a little bit of give, but it didn't seem to really make any difference to the snarl as a whole. Cutting through it would probably be cheating, alas...

Where were the ends of the cord, anyway? It hunted all over but couldn't find even one of the ends in evidence. How had she managed to do this...? It seemed physically impossible.
Well. Patience, and all that.

Carefully, it hunched over the knot formation, peering at it as closely as it could without finding a source of magnification. Hmm. It gently began tracing the thread as much as was possible, running the tip of one claw down a loop and trying to track where that bit of cord went. Under here, through there, above that...
Hm.
Ah.
A bit of give under its claw gave it the hint it needed. Gently, it worked at the thread and managed to pull one end free of the mass. From there, it was just a matter of working backwards, using its smallest tweezers to grip and tug and push and...
After a good half-hour of work, the entire snarl fell apart in its claws, into relatively smooth and knot-free cord. Success!
But what lesson had it been meant to learn...? Hm. Perhaps that in itself was part of the lesson.
