As far as territories went, Hesse was pretty nice. As with any respectable trading center, there were a plethora of goods and services available, assuming you had the money, or at least the right connections. For Kalay, who had both, Hesse was more than a pleasant location to spend some time, and a place where she could satisfy some of her many appetites. On an extended stay after doing a big favor for the Lady of Hesse, Kalay found herself perusing some of Hesse's many venues. Her own castle's isolation had it's benefits, to be sure, but there was something to be said easy access to an outside community. Why, while here, she only had to take a short walk from her room and she could buy just about any mundane piece or trinket she could think of! It was reason to consider inviting people to take up residence around Whitestone. Something to think more on, at the very least.
Having a temporary fill of clothes and jewelry, Kalay wandered into a flower shop, interest peaked. You didn't see many flower shops left anymore, and she always did have a very soft spot for them. Why, perhaps she might find a new species or two to introduce to the grounds around Whitestone? She flashed the shop's keeper a bright smile as she entered. "Good morning," she offered additionally in way of greeting, "Do you mind if I take a look around?" Of course he wouldn't, it was the whole point of a shop to cater to her interests, but this was a conversation strategy.

"Good morning!" Howl cheerfully chirped, or rather, Derek, as he had christened this disguise. He was fond of giving false names, but even more fond of disguising himself so cleverly no one would have known who he was. He had delighted in giving himself a pointed nose, freckles and rounding his face so he looked like a boy not long out of puberty. Maybe three years. "Oh, of course not! Go ahead. My father's not in town today, but I can help you--" he hesitated, appearing awkward for a moment. He glanced around the room. "With anything," he decided with a nod.
Oh, the joys of being a teenage boy. So awkward. And for a boy to find himself stuck in a flowershop! "Is there anything you're looking for in particular?" he asked. "We have a sale on bluebells today. They're going out of season quickly."

Kalay teased lightly at the coral beads of her necklace, and strolled slowly across one side of the flower shop, carefully appraising all of the presented specimens and weighing options in her mind. "I came here to browse, but," she turned away from admiring some tulips to look at HowlDerek briefly, and then back to the tulips. "Ah, never mind. You say you have a sale on bluebells? I'm rather keen on those." As if her dress and accessories didn't clearly demonstrate her fondness for it, Kalay did in fact find herself very partial to the color blue.
She turned to walk over to the counter and rest her palms on it lightly, still smiling. "Actually, I wouldn't mind having a look at any of your blue or purple flowers today. Do you offer bouquets?"

Howl made his way out from behind his desk. "Oh yes," he said, smiling at her. "I'm quite keen on them also," he added, with a nod. "You know they're listed as one of the top ten most beautiful flowers in the world. And they're supposed to mean 'humility' and 'graditude' when given to someone." He shrugged, rubbing awkwardly at his elbow. "I don't know much about flower language though. I think the flower should mean what the person giving it should want it to mean. You know?"
He hesitated for a long moment. "A bouquet?" he repeated, blinking. "Of course. I can make you one, if you'd like. I don't believe we have any in those specific colors. I could dye you some carnations--you'd have to come back for them tomorrow." He gestured vaguely to a group of flowers. "Violets, orchids, lavender, scilla, daylillies. We have some phlox. Maybe Lamium?"

"I would argue that beauty's perfectly set against perception, but on the other hand my bias insists that bluebells really are some of the prettiest, so I can't claim to really disagree." Kalay quit messing with her beads to instead stroke flower petals with curious fingers, testing for texture. "I get where you're coming from," she replied, watching the flowers instead of him, "but you can't discount the associations with certain things. Ideally it would mean what you want it to, but things don't quite work like that." She leaned in to smell the flower she was admiring, and exhaled blissfully. That really was sweet.
"I'll be around for a few days yet, I wouldn't mind a wait." She expected to remain for at least another week or so. And wasn't that kind of variety worth waiting for? He certainly listed quite a few flowers, and some she was quite positive weren't native around here or in their growing season. "If you can pardon a young lady's curiosity, where do you source your flowers from? I wasn't under the impression you could find all of those locally. "

Howl nodded in agreement, running a hand through his hair. "Right," he said. "But imagine this. Someone you care about loves bluebells. So you may be getting them to express your love for them. Are you expressing graditude? Or what you intended?" He shrugged. Flowers were a difficult language to learn, and even more difficult to make reason of.
"Oh, of course not!" Howl quickly gestured to a door leading behind the shop. "My father grows them here in our greenhouse. It allows us to grow some of these flowers all year--because they need a certain setting to grow. Others--" he grimanced. "Others we're shipped from bigger cities. One day, I hope father's able to have a greenhouse that'll stun the whole world." He beamed at her, apparently sharing his dream. "That one's not for sale," he said, gesturing to the center piece of the display. A star indigo flower. "It's for the fair this year. Perhaps we'll win?"

"I'd argue it's all, again, based on perception. Perhaps the person in question is allergic to blue bells, and they associate them with discomfort and pain, and so their reception is poor. It doesn't matter what you're trying to say, if they take it the wrong way." she casually tapped her forefingers together in thought, but an itching in the back of her mind was starting to get to her. Something wasn't quite right here, despite how reasonable it all seemed. Was there some piece she was overlooking?
"Greenhouses certainly are a boon. I'm looking to stock mine better," its construction was only recently completed, "And if you have any orchid seeds, I'm in desperate need of those. Orchids make my heart sing, I-" she stopped to take in the flower he gestured to, and felt a squirm in her stomach. That was not a normal flower, and it was also just the one she had been looking for. Oh. "That's quite the prize," she remarked, sounding far more casual than she felt. I'm assuming it's the only one you have?"

"Orchid seeds? I can have several bags boxed up for you, if you like. We might have some rooting in the greenhouse, if you'd like faster results." Howl gave her a bright smile, the picture of a helpful shopkeeper. Oh, so she had noticed the star indigo. He'd wondered. What was it about that flower? The wizard had had little time to study it before magically constructing the flowershop.
"I'm afraid so," he said, shaking his head. "They're difficult to find, and difficult to grow." He hesitated and then held out a small packet of seeds. "I do have this, though," he offered. "You'll have to soak them in water overnight to get them started. Just the one, then? Or do you still want the orchids?"

What luck, Kalay really hadn't been expecting to come out with such treasures today. Orchids and a possible star indigo would certainly top off her growing collection nicely. "I'm going to be traveling, and I fear the flowers would fare poorly under the conditions. The seeds would hold better until I can get home," Kalay reasoned, trying to keep from sounding overly pleased.
Indeed, Star Indigo were mighty hard to find, and very hard to grow outside of the Feywilds. It was as if the same magics that lent the flower its properties was hesitant to promote its growth away from its environment. Or was it just that it wasn't strong enough to persist outside of the Feywild? It was certainly worth investigating, another one of the many studies Kalay would love to conduct.
"I'll take whatever seeds you'll sell of both," Kalay concluded, straightening up and dipping one hand into a cloak pocket to finger her coins. "And I'd like to put an order down for a blue bouquet to be picked up later this week."

"I see," Howl said, flashing her another smile. What luck! She hadn't yet been able to see through his disguise. He had fancied she would have been perceptive enough to. "Safe travels," he said with a nod. "As it happens--" he paused, with genuine curiousity--"Would you know what this flower does? I'm afraid my father was in such a rush to leave town, he forgot to tell me what this flower does. Is it an herb? For teas?" he guessed. "Or maybe for wounds--I tried poking it earlier with a stick, but it didn't do anything." He was clearly disappointed in this fact. "Is it useful at all?"
He pulled out another packet of indigo star flower seeds, and then swept his way back to the desk he had previously been standing. "Let's see. Orchid seeds. Oh, looks like they're on sale today! How lucky! It seems every time you buy a packet of these," he held up the indigo star seeds, "You get three of any other flowerseed." He paused, holding up a hand to keep her from pulling out her money. "Oh no," he said with a shake of his head. "It's not every day I get to have beautiful girls come in. This' on me. Alright? And you wanted a bouquet too. I'll have that ready for you in a few days, you can pay for that then."

This was too good to be true. Literally, it was too good, there was something up. Sure, it was flattering to be called pretty and such, but he had to be pulling this off of the top of his head, because there was no way there was a 'one day sale' with something he hadn't even previously been ready to sell, and then all of a sudden it was 'free' because he said she was pretty? Was he some kind of horribly lonely boy (Kalay was sure there was irony there, him being surrounded by all sorts of flowers), because surely his father couldn't condone giving away this extent of valuable merchandise.
Well, one thing at a time, she would address his questions about the flower first. "You have to look at it during the night. Preferably not the evening, but the actual night. It's fairly self explanatory after that," she assured. She did cringe a little inwardly imagining the boy subjecting the poor flower to such abuses, but she would let that go, because she had no say in the past and it wasn't her place to intervene.
And now for the subject of payment. "Young sir, that is quite a bit of merchandise you're giving away. Are you positive your father's alright with you handing out things like that?" Particularly when even a small handful of Star Indigo seeds could more than triple the stock the shop seemed to be boasting right now.

"At night?" Howl asked with a tilt of his head. Did it glow? Perhaps it created stars? Its name did suggest it had something to do with stars. Perhaps the flower caused stars to be born? "Thank you," he added with a smile. "I'll be sure to study it tonight!"
At her question, he hesitated. He put on his best guilty expression, looking at his feet and sticking his hands in his jean pockets. "Well, I dunno," he said. "Maybe not. But I'm paying for them, really. It'll be fine. He'll never know. I'll pay for them with my own money--" to prove this, he took out a small bag of coins. "See? He'll never know. And I want you to keep them. As a present."
He hesitated and flashed her a smile. "So maybe when you come pick up your bouquet, we can be friends."

It was a cute gesture, but Kalay was quite sure that this kid couldn't afford those, at least not with all of the evidence presented so far. "Look, I would feel guilty if I didn't pay for these. Why don't I do that, and we'll find another way you can make it up to me." Not that she really had anything in mind, or wanted anything from him. Part of her just wanted to take the good stuff and split while the offer stood, but it was important to maintain a good reputation, and a piece of her was insistent upon doing the right thing. For now, that trumped her playful and manipulative desires, so she rummaged in her pocket to pull out sufficient coinage (plus tip) and set that out on the counter with a little 'plink'.

"I said they're free," Howl insisted, pushing her coins towards her. "I'm not accepting payment today. It's free. I told you, I'm paying for them." He did pause, thinking over her offer. "You mean I could make it up to you?" he asked, beaming. "Well, if you're going to be in town a few days, I could take you to lunch, or something! I know this great diner, all sorts of neat foods!" He took the coins reluctantly, then studied Kalay.
"We'd have fun," He added as an afterthought. "I can show you the musuem here. There's art and stuff--" and maybe he was getting a little too over excited. "We could have hot chocolate at the cafe down the street," he finished, flushing. "My treat?"

This kid certainly was insistent. Or infatuated. Or Desperate. Maybe a combination of all of the above. While she did enjoy museums and fine dining, she was also fairly sure she didn't want to go with this kid. He seemed nice, enough, but she'd also only met him a few minutes ago, and despite past trends, she didn't actually enjoy spur of the moment activities with strangers. She would have to deflect this with some kind of compromise, and then reassess the situation from there.
"That sounds enjoyable," she said, sounding sincere, "But I'm also a very busy woman," which she was. Sort of. "Why don't we go for coffee, tea or hot chocolate or such, and we can spend a little time together then?" Tea break was a lot less of a time commitment, and would afford her a little more flexibility.
