Spirit Week had come and gone, leaving more than pesky snow in its wake. West felt happier, more carefree, and even though he had a pretty good idea that some outside force was making him feel this way, he found that this time he didn't care. After everything that had happened recently, he deserved a little happiness, even if it was being forced upon him. Right?

West shook his head, rolled his eyes and grabbed his phone off of the pristine kitchen counter. Being happy apparently made him restless, and it didn't help that his throat was well on its way to healing completely, or at least healing as well as it ever would. He was fairly sure he was ready to eat solid foods again, but that didn't matter much. He was going to eat them anyway, even if he wasn't ready.

After spending most of his morning fighting the urge to take a hike through the snow to the nearest shopping center in order to purchase an assload of yarn, West had finally gotten that desire under control by remembering that he couldn't knit. No knitting, no need for stupid yarn.

He needed something to do, however, or he was going to ******** hug somebody.

The solution to all of his problems was obvious, and eventually he gave in and unlocked his phone, tapping out a message that half of him hoped wouldn't have the man police breaking down his door. The other half didn't care.

Quote:
i want to make spookies

Once he had checked to make sure he was texting the right person, West hit send, then took a seat on the edge of his bed. He had sugar and flour and eggs and chocolate, but that vague ingredient list was about as far as his knowledge of flat dessert creation extended. He snorted faintly and shrugged. They couldn't be that hard to make.

At that moment, Levi'd already begun baking. Having gotten up early enough to do her routine dorm chores as usual, there was a need for baking all of a sudden that the ghoul couldn't quite satiate. The usual sorts of recipes containing her candy corn weren't fulfilling that need. Something was missing.

It was when she was baking with various spices found in the monster dorm kitchen that she received the text message from West. Well I'll be, kekeke. West wanted to bake spookies? Really? As baffled as she was, Levi was far more thrilled at the prospect of baking with West, sharing in the spirit of togetherness! What could make her more happy than sharing her new found recipe with West and possibly watching the snow fall from within the warm quarters of his dorm?

Well, the fact that he might be well enough to eat them now would be a plus. With his neck injury, Levi hadn't been able to cook for him lately. As simple as it was, the tatzel felt a bit of home life in her time with West in the kitchen. Aside from when her Ma had to lock her Pa up in the next room so he wouldn't eat everything before it was ready, it was as if she and West were already living like mates.

Quote:
Okay coming by : )

Levi was getting better at this texting thing. Something told her the message needed to be cheerful, so the addition of a smiley face was even applied. Once sent, it dawned on the ghoul that she should bring a gift to her boilfriend if she were visiting his residence.

Something festive was in order; what was a good festive gift?

Collecting up her prototype special spookies, Levi proceeded to fill a basket with all the necessary ingredients and her wrinkled paper with the recipe scribbled out in charcoal. Perhaps she'd come up with something on the way over to the demon dorms.

---------

There would be a knock on West's window, followed by some tapping in a jingley sort of tune with the tatzel's fingernails. Crouched on the ledge, something green and pointy was held within her curled tail, barely visible in full form. A wide grin surfaced when West was within view through the pane, Levi's hair and clothes riddled with the specs of cold white fluff falling from the sky. She had taken the time to actually put on a jacket (the one given by West, in fact) in remembrance of her chills from the Christmas Town invasion last year.

A shame they couldn't stay longer, she thought.

Levi gestured to the boil by raising her forearm where her basket hung. Her usual plain wicker basket now had a pair of red and green bows tied at either end of the handle, adding a certain joyful flare. HA-HA-HA! It was close enough.

I vote it be titled "West want spookie NOMNOMNOM" but that's me V: I think this works too.

Upon receiving her cheerful acceptance of his vague invitation, West's restlessness slowly began to fade. There had been little to do during the time he'd locked himself away except clean, so his room was already about as neat as it was going to get. It even smelled a bit... piney from all of the disinfectant. Appropriate.

His phone was tossed carelessly onto his desk and he might have begun to pace, but that didn't last long. Soon he heard a tapping at his window, and he turned to Levi with a smirk, realizing too late that he was still sporting that damned war clan sweater from Medea's horselady knitting circle. He had decided to wear it this morning on a whim, and had completely forgotten he was still wrapped in its fluffy, soft warmth.

The smirk faltered as he hurried over to let the ghoul in, but he was too curious about the things she held to stay embarrassed for long. It looked like she had brought ingredients after all. Or a puppy. He couldn't decide. West pulled open the window and started to move aside, but before he could, he caught a merry HA-HA-HA to the face. Was she laughing at him? He didn't think so. The boil paused, pondering his response. In his current state, there would be no epic return-HAs, but he could probably get away with letting her fall through the window after pretending he was going to help her in. That would be funny.

No, the JOY in his system didn't like that one bit. The urge to hug something rose, sending a brief jolt though his stomach that made him feel as though he was about to fall.

Instead, West said, "Ha to you too," at a much lower volume than he normally employed, but a much higher one than he'd used at Spirit Week. To be fair, anything was louder than nothing, but it was still a vast improvement as far as he was concerned. He held out his hand to take her basket, noticing that she was wearing a very familiar outer layer. "Whatsin there? An' whassat?" He pointed at her tail. Some part of him wanted to bounce on his toes and clap, but he held still, ready to catch her if she stumbled while coming inside. Use the door next time, ghoul.

You'd think the ghoul had gone years without him or something, or she was particularly cheery to simply be there in his presence with good tidings to bring. In a double dose of glee, Levi wrapped her arms loosely over the shoulders of the wrath demon, keeping his neck in mind, when she leapt off the ledge and into the room. Her tail would have wound with his had it not been otherwise in use. Arms released, Levi looked down at herself, raising a brow at West's inquiry. What's in 'ere? Me... Why was he asking about what she had under her jacket?

oh. OH.

Oh, ya mean this? N' that- Well, this'is a- could'ja hold this fer a sec? About to take up what was within her tail's grasp, Levi first motioned to hand over the basket to West. Once her hands were free, she picked up the small green pointed object and held it in front of her so the boil could see. It'sa tree! Felt like ya'needed one. Of all the things that crossed her mind on the way, this overly plush tree seemed all too perfect to bring with her. So uh... ya'got'a cup 're somethin' ta'put it'in? Looking around the room right off the bat, Levi saw no such suitable object to hold the mini tree. This had her heading towards the kitchen in search of something there.

On her way through the doorway, a purposeful bounce in her step, Levi nodded her head at the basket West held. Go'on n' have a look see. Inside, West would find all the necessary things to make what was written out on the small wrinkled sheet therein.

From within the next room, her voice rang out among the opening of cabinet doors. That's somethin' new I just made this mornin'! Whaddaya'think? Up for'it? That'll make 'bout'a dozen.

He grinned as her arms wrapped around him, and once he was free again, West slid the window shut and locked it out of habit. With all of the accomplished shadow steppers and teleporters around this place, locking down one's room kind of seemed like a waste of time.

A touch of the pleasant embarrassment that only Levi could spark these days flashed through him as she misinterpreted his question, but it didn't last long. She had handed him one of the things he had been so curious about, and he was not going to miss the opportunity to see what was inside. West stuck his fingers under the lid of the basket, and was just about to flick it open when she presented him with the tree.

"I do," he replied, drawing out the vowel in a quiet miniature howl. He might have been commenting on needing a tree, having a container for said tree, or both, but whatever he meant, he was clearly tickled by the little thing's presence. "There's like a pitcher thing in there somewhere." He started to follow her into the other room, finally sticking his hand into the basket as he went. Powders and goop. They certainly smelled better than they looked.

"Yeah," he said, removing the ingredient list and spreading it on the counter. "We can try it." The basket went on the table, its lid left open. He supposed that even if his contribution to the spookies made them so horrible that they both dissipated after eating them, it wasn't like they couldn't just run back from the infirmary and try again. Anyway, he had faith in Levi's cooking. She'd made those spookies she brought him that one time, right? When she'd visited before Scarentine's... No. Now was not the time to be thinking of that particular moment in their shared past. He swallowed, forgetting that it still kind of hurt.

West pointed at the cabinet farthest from where they stood. "There's where th' pitcher is. Where we gonna put the tree?"

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Atta boil! That's tha'spirit! We'll git goin' soon as I put this in somethin' then. Her line of sight followed towards the small door West indicated, bounding over there in search of the tree's new home.

Somewhere in'here, huh... hmm. Ah-! 'Ere it is!

Shuffling a few other clear containers over, Levi acquired the water-retaining vessel, bringing it over to the faucet. She took this time to wriggle out of the fur-trimmed jacket, placing it on the back of the dark wood chair by the table. Seeing West lay out all the contents of her basket along with the recipe, Levi gave a chuckle. Ma never could trust her Pa to handle the ingredients of her cooking. Pa had a nasty habit of cramming them all into his mouth before they could actually be made into anything. This was why he was usually locked in another room while any specialty foods were prepared, Levi often keeping watch at the door in case he tried to break free.

Once the pitcher was filled about halfway, the ghoul turned the water off and placed the base of the miniature tree inside with an accomplished smile beaming towards the wrath demon. At least the lower branches were settled in such a way over the mouth of the container that they stopped the baby pine from wobbling any. Perfect fit! I'think it'll go good riiiiight 'ere fer now, eh? The tatzel carefully placed the base of the glass pitcher onto the table in one corner, far enough from the ingredients but close enough to still remain in their view as they worked. Whaddaya'think? Now Levi had a moment to actually look at West thoroughly when she question him, noting the familiar sweater he had on. The red added a definite something special to it, she thought; it was a great sweater. Feeling a need to wear something bright red or a Demi green left the ghoul with little to work with in her own closet. The closest item of apparel she had was her red scarf, which she wore.

Nice'n warm, I bet.

There was a pause before she continued, looking at all the things scattered over the tabletop and placing her hands on her hips in thought. Hmm. What we need now're some bowls n' spoons. 'bout medium sized bowls, one teaspoon n' one tablespoon. Where do'ya keep yer spoons? The tatzel ghoul moved back towards the counter, eyeing the smaller drawers by the microwave and opening the topmost one in pursuit of some utensils.

Once everything was laid out and the tree placed at the end of the table, West took a step back, eyeing the spread with obvious approval. At least until he thought about what exactly he was doing, then it was back to frowns for a minute. This was stupid. Stupidly awesome. Levi was just as excited about this whole thing as he was, right? She had shown up here quickly enough based on the strength of one of his more odd requests, and she wasn't even looking at him funny for it. This was kind of... well, he didn't want to say perfect until they had baked the spookies and... decorated... the... tree? All right, where had that thought come from? The boil looked left and right sharply as if searching for some blatantly obvious mind ray that was causing him to feel this way, but when he found nothing, his smirk slowly returned.

He nodded. "Looks good."

"Spoons'r in th'next drawer," he replied. "An' I'll get some bowls." They were back over in the cabinet near the pitcher.

Even though he hadn't spoken to his parents for months before he had decided to add a kitchen to his dorm, they'd still known somehow, probably because he had used their credit card to pay for the renovation. His mother had sent him more cooking and baking items than he had thought it possible to use... ever. In addition to the pitcher and the two bowls he retrieved now, West also had a couple of flat trays, a muffin tin, a measuring cup, four spatulas of varying sizes and colors, and a plainish set of dishware for four. Four? Peh. They were all gathering dust.

"Gonna hafta wash these," he muttered, setting the bowls in the sink and turning on the water. After a bit of silent scrubbing, he asked, "Those cookies soft?" It seemed a bit out of the blue, but he was honestly curious.

Gotcha. Shifting a bit to reach into the drawer one over as designated by West, Levi retrieved the spoons needed for measuring. Of course, turning now to face West with the utensils, the tatzel's eyes grew in surprise to the gathering of baking supplies he'd taken out aside from the promised bowls.

Well now, wet ma'whiskers- didn't know ya'll had such'a hankerin' fer this sorta thing. Wouldn't 'of figured, West. The boil had enough to make any sort of treat from spookie to pie. Now why ain't I ever seen any treats comin' my way? Placing the spoons onto the table with the rest of the clean equipment, Levi moved over to the sink with a dishcloth in view to dry off that which West was currently washing. It'd get done quicker if they did it together.

Hmm. West wanted to know what the spookies were like as far as texture? Not thinking much about the why, Levi herself tried to word her explanation as best as she could. They had a differing feel depending on when they were eaten and how long they were left to cool. They start soft n' warm when ya'just take'em out, but they git harder tha'longer they're out. So was her observation with the batch she'd just made before coming by.

Hands circling in and on the things she took from West to dry them off, Levi placed the baking items on the available counter space for after they were done with the initial work. So ya'want ta'do tha'wet 're dry? Dividing up the work this way would mean less confusion once they began mixing.

A sudden laugh burst from the boil's lips. It was no guffaw or anything, but it did seem to take him by surprise. He glanced at the bowl in his hand, noticing that he was scrubbing at it far more aggressively than was necessary to clean off some simple dust, and loosened his grip on the sponge.

"Nah, I dun... I'm not th' one makin' anythin' or ya'd have some, dun worry. If y'even wanted any after y'saw 'em." He passed her the wet bowl and got started on some other random piece of cookware. "My mom got all this crap fer me when she heard I was addin' th' room. We got a cook at home so she dun know nothin'. Thinks y'need alla this jus' 'cause it comes inna set." West cleared his throat, remembering to keep his voice low. It wouldn't do to mess things up on the inside when he was just starting to feel normal again.

The boil grinned down at his hands again when she began describing the cookies. He hadn't been trying to bait her, honestly, but even a simple 'hard' or 'soft' would have sounded suggestive coming from someone like Duerre. Levi was so... guileless. Truly. It was a relief and a source of frustration all at the same time. "So, I'll prob'ly wanna eat 'em right when they're done then," he said. "Fer now. 'Cause of..." He touched his throat. "Or not. I mean, I can chew." Even so, warm, squishy spookies sounded like one of the most wonderful things in the world right now, almost better than punching someone. Almost.

He passed her the last bowl, drying his hands and grabbing the recipe off of the counter where he had left it. "Wet stuff, I guess." Was he supposed to stir all of these things together first? "What happens if y'mix everythin' at once?" Obviously West's spookie technique involved making that whole "preparation" step as short as possible. He turned and bent over slightly, poking at the ingredients until he found the shortening. It was to be melted. Pan. Stove. Fire. He could handle this.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 07, 2012 12:11 pm

'course I'd want 'em. Even if West's spookies came out half ash and half dough, Levi would still eat them out of respect that he'd made them for her. It was a potential stomach ache waiting to happen, but that was the way she'd been brought up. You never wasted what was made and you certainly didn't turn away a gift given to you.

She glanced at West, a bit perplexed by any thought he'd have of her not wanting to accept his baked goods, but she could see what he'd been trying to say. They'd be mine. As she placed the bowl handed to her down on the counter good and dry, she grinned at the mention of his mother. So she don't cook herself? Well, can't say it's fer everybody- She wasn't about to insult West's mother; especially considering she herself wasn't the finest cook or ghouly ghoul when it came to homely activities designated to tatzel ghouls. Bits here and there, fine, but she wasn't going to sit and knit sweaters for every scarling in the town or something.

Though it was sort of tempting at the moment...

but she don't just try once in awhile? Ya'know. Fer fun? Honestly, Levi hadn't heard much about West's family and was wishing more and more that she could. Being a fairly family-oriented tatzel, Levi wanted to get a better idea of what home life was like for West. What'cher Pa think'a that? Surely his father had some insight on the wanting of baked goods from his mate.

Her ears stood up straight before curving downward when West mentioned and motioned to his throat. OH! Right. There was a very subtle softness to her voice; concern.

Following suit, the ghoul dried her hands and took up one of the bowls. Alright! Yew can go'head with that then n' we'll- Mixing it all at once? It seemed like something he might do, causing Levi to chuckle just a tad at the imagery of it. Don't wanna be doin' that, boil. Changes tha' feel n' taste 'a things. Won't always cook right neither. Best ta'just do'it like Gran would. Old ways worked strong and true; tatzelwurm recipes followed through however their kin before them brewed cookings.

Alright, use this fer tha'shortening once ya'got it liquidy. I'll git 'nother n' start siftin' tha'flour. Looking around, Levi handed west the bowl she held and then tried to find the large wooden-framed sifter like the one she had. Uh,... where's yer sifter, West?

"Hm," he murmured, caught somewhere between pleased and embarrassed. Again. If she planned on actually eating every rotten bit of food he made, he was just going to have to stop cooking.

Okay, done.

Well, after today at least.

His shoulders lifted in a wry shrug. "Nah, Mom sits an' drinks wine an' eats what's put in fronna her, an' not even mucha that." West might have resembled his mother physically, but he certainly didn't get his appetite from her. "She mostly does, uh... wrath things." He gestured vaguely at nothing, then transferred a pot to the stove and turned it on. 'Proper' wrath demons, his parents said, used contracts and the specialized abilities granted to their species to spread their sin, none of the amateurish brutishness they had seemed so keen to instill in him. Whatever. He shrugged.

"Mom mighta tried cookin' b'fore I knew 'er, but she doesn't do much now 'cept make tea. She prob'ly wouldn't think tryin' anythin' more than that'd be very fun at all." He smirked, reaching for the brown glop he identified as molasses from the smell. "I dun think Dad minds, t'be honest. I dunno. I never did either when I lived there." He hadn't really grown up with family who were crafty in the kitchen, so he'd never thought to miss it.

"Ah. Gran knows best," he said once she explained, his smirk deepening as he gathered the rest of the things he deemed wet ingredients and lined them up next to the molasses. "But she might hafta come up with a new way of siftin' things on the fly, 'cause I dun have a sifter." Whatever that was. He assumed it was for... sifting, but he could only guess what one actually looked like.

Kinda'a shame. Placing her bowl in front of a seat at the table, she slinked into a sit. One'a tha'things I remember most 'bout bein' a wee spring was comin' home n' smellin' Ma's cookin' soon as I opened tha'door. It was baffling to try and think of how West had survived all these years without something similar. Wrath demons; Levi would have to ask West more about how they functioned as a family back home because the information she was hearing sounded completely the opposite of what she had known. First, however, it was back to the spookies.

If her smile seemed unusually bright, it might have been due to West mentioning her Gran. The ghoul had a kinship with the elderly tatzel on a very close level. Levi tried to imagine a day when West would meet her for himself; all of them, really. Don't think she'd mind none at that. Gotta work with what'cha got too. Ain't always gonna have all these.. uh, tools with'ya neither, right? We'll make'it work. You learned to make due; it was part of living with limited options as well. Ah-ha! This should do. See? Levi help up a stainless steel whisk for West's viewing. Used fer beatin' eggs- oh, which ya'll git yer chance at doin', kekeke... but yew can use'it fer breakin' down n' loosenin' tha'flour too. Demonstrating her point, Levi gently began to feed flour into the bowl she had and lifted the top layer with the whisk, allowing it to fall through the openings of the wires. Might take 'bit longer, but it works. OH! Shoot. Should git tha'oven goin'. West, ya'mind settin'yer oven fer~ this 'mount'a time? She was holding the bowl down so flour didn't go flying everywhere while she did her makeshift sifting, but nodded in the direction of the recipe so the wrath demon would be able to see the setting for himself.

Now, with 'that shortenin', yer gonna need tha'sugar. Mix them two together 'ntil they're smoooth. The tatzel elongated the final word said to accentuate the point. So stir'it'up good, boil. Levi got a sudden tingle in her chest at the thought of what she was doing right now; she felt like her Ma or, rather, as if she was home with West right now. Hands busily working towards making something and delegating the steps simply delighted her in the most serene way. Were ya'even close with yer cook? Had West never had this sort of feeling? Was it really his first experience cooking like this with someone? Admittedly, it was sort of humbling being his first; partner in cooking, that is.

As Levi went about using one of the many other seemingly useless tools scattered around his kitchen to mimic the one thing he didn't have, West watched her, taking in the ease with which she adapted with some small amount of pride. He was well aware that sifting flour with a different implement than the one you were accustomed to was hardly the same as, say, outsmarting a murderous human, but surely someday she would move on to crafting bazookas out of old shoes if she kept at it. The tatzel was clearly a master inventor. Or maybe the JOY was just getting to West's brain.

He nodded when she directed him to the oven, setting the temperature and duration before tackling the shortening and sugar. His first inclination was to dump all of the granules into the greasy mush in the other bowl, but he stopped himself before he began. Slowly. He watched her sifting the flour. Not all at once. West folded the ingredients into each other carefully, his face lighting with satisfaction as the mixture came together. He sprinkled in more sugar and repeated the process as he spoke.

"Guess I wasn't encouraged t'hang out wit' th' cooks," he said, his voice getting softer as the sentence continued. He had never really thought much about how his parents had treated the help, but now he realized that relations had never been very friendly between them at all. "I dunno, there jus' wasn't any reason t'talk to 'em," he said with a shrug. "Sure, the stuff they made smelled good, but I didn't know 'em t'be 'round 'em any more'n I knew most adults." His parents had never really displayed normal demony prejudices like good old fashioned racism. They'd never tried to stop him from playing with any of the other kids in the neighborhood as long as they were comparably pampered. But if they were poor? That was a different story altogether.

West peeked at the recipe again, checking to see what he should be doing next. "Sounds like it mighta been nice though." He had other memories that took precedence over the warm smells of baking. Watching his mother swipe on lipstick as he peered over the side of her vanity. Listening to his father tell wildly elaborate lies about the days he spent inducing rage in the human population. Getting hurt. He gently retrieved an egg from its carton and moved back to Levi's side, waiting for her to be done with the whisk. "Think I'm ready t'stir, right?"
PostPosted: Fri Apr 19, 2013 6:29 pm

That's tha'way. Keep foldin'it in. Her tone indicated her sincere approval of West's work. There was a bounce to Levi's steps as she sidestepped a lingering West to head over to the table. Picking up a few of the spices, she returned to sift them in with the flour in their proper amounts. The ghoul knew her way around a spoon measurement.

The smell of flour, in addition with the ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt was starting to bring forth what their final product was going to smell like. Levi smiled up at the boil, leaning back on him for a moment to let the scent waft upward towards him too. Mmm, I reckon so. Whaddaya'think? Smells good, don't it? Good in a way Levi herself couldn't explain, but for whatever reason, the smell of the spices mixed together tickled her insides; it was just the same reaction she had to the tiny tree.

Ya'know how ta crack that? The tatzel nodded towards the egg West held in his hand. Yer gonna be mixin'it in with yer shortenin'n'sugar mix. Then I'll be addin' in tha' dry mix I got 'ere lil by lil. Here ya'are. Tapping the whisk on the edge of her bowl of freshly sifted ingredients, Levi offered the tool to the wrath demon to begin the process of mixing all the wet ingredients. Make sure nothin' is comin' through. Gotta make it all int a one thing b'fore we add this part. Mix it hard but not too hard, ya hear? Levi propped her elbows onto the counter, hands curling around her bowl, waiting to see West's technique with incorporating all the things in his bowl. For a scarling who had never learnt such things from his mother or the cooks, he seemed to have a pretty good handle on what to do.This the sort of thing he watches on the skelevision or something? No, he would have undoubtedly known what a sifter looked like in that case. Levi found herself pondering such things, staring at the boil as he worked without realizing she wasn't blinking.

When she did, her tail shifted from one side to the other and a hand arose prop under her chin. Well what sorta thing didja' like doin' back home then? Like when ya'll were playin' with other folk 'er family. If he hadn't done much with the other adults or his parents, the demon surely would've had activities with some of his other peers.

He might not have had many homey sorts of memories from his past, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, at least in West's opinion. All it meant was that there was more room in his head for new ones, like this. As Levi leaned back, he caught a whiff of the ginger mixture in front of her and shifted forward slightly, smiling into her hair. While it was true that he'd never had much of an occasion to smell such JOYful cookies in Halloween before, he certainly knew what he would think of now if he ever did so again.

"Do I know how ta..." He moved away from the ghoul and held up his egg. "Issere a special way t'crack it? I'm not gonna... throw it 'round like a maceball'r nothin'." He grinned as he spoke, tapping it lightly against the side of the bowl with an exaggerated flourish. Despite his teasing, he probably would have smacked it a bit harder if he'd been alone. The egg went into the bowl and he took the whisk from Levi, gripping both carefully as he began to stir. This didn't go as well as his previous attempt at mixing had, but that was mostly because the boil was beginning to get hungry, which in turn sparked a touch of impatience in him. When a glob of shortening and egg hopped a little higher than it should have for a moment, West slowed his hand. He focused his concentration, intent on doing things properly, and this focus served to distract him just enough to loosen his tongue.
