My friend made a comment the other day about how the gay community moves ten times faster than the straight community, and it made me wonder whether he was right. Are there differences between how the straight and LGBTQ communities work? What are they?

What do you mean by "moves ten times faster"?

I'm borrowing my friend's words. I don't really understand what he meant, and was hoping some discussion could enlighten me.

Strong Pokemon... Weak Pokemon...
That is only the selfish perception of people...

Your friend might have meant that the relationships or people themselves are more quickly paced, per se, than the heterosexual community.

Moves faster...? Whut? :s

One community is a hell of a lot smaller than the other, so...I suppose news and gossip travels more quickly? Other than that, I don't think the queer community is any different than any other group of people who get lumped together because of a particular commonality. There are as many different types of LGBT folks as there are straight ones, and I don't think there's any single belief that we all share. I mean, yeah, in a broad sense, everyone just wants to be able to live their life without being subjected to hate or discrimination, but that's hardly unique to the queer community.

Anyway, do straight people even think of themselves as being part of a straight "community"? I never really got that impression, but I have no idea. I'm not very involved in LGBT-related things outside of Gaia, and most of my close friends are straight. We don't really talk about gender and sexuality issues, though, so I don't know what they think on the matter.

As for the gay community here in my city (and in other small cities in my region), I've heard it referred to as being "incestuous". razz
What they mean is that since there's a much smaller pool of people you can potentially date, there's a good chance you'll end up dating someone who has also been with at least one of your "brothers/sisters" (friends).

The way I interpreted it was that the LGBTQ communities are more straightforward about being entitled to their rights and actually succeed in making themselves heard. I think that discrimination against a person's sexual preference gets more media attention than the common domestic violence and abuse as well.

I remember during my first year at college, the run down LGBTQ building was subjected to vandalism. They made a really huge fuss about it and during my last year of school, they built a new building in the center of campus. It was the most beautiful building at school and was labeled the student community center. But when you walk in, first thing you see is a large room labeled LGBTQ. The school pooled tons of money into this brand new building to encourage them that they shouldn't have to be ashamed of who they are. Great for them...but wish the school could've used some of that money toward enhancing our education. The theatre department needed some serious refurbishing and the design department needed a new laser cutter xd
