Score. Ricky Cunningham had landed a date. He wasn't sure how he'd done it. Sure, he'd been around the block a bit since moving to Destiny City, but most girls who got to know him better wanted less and less to do with him. Maybe that was the issue - Anella hardly knew Ricky, she only knew him as Troy and he only knew her as Aventine. And perhaps that was for the best.
Of course, none of this went through Ricky's simple mind. He was just happy to be on a date as he waited for her to arrive at a tiny diner. Sure, it was nothing classy, but as far as he was concerned it was some of the best food in town. He could read everything on the menu and know exactly what it was - no weird named foods here - and the prices were really affordable. Some may argue dirt cheap, a step above fast food. Plus, the food wasn't half bad, as good as fast food! And to top it all off, there were a few TVs by the counter with football, soccer and even some rugby action going on.
It was the perfect place for a first date. Right?

Anella wasn't entirely sure what to expect for the evening; she was used to going on dates with strange men, but Ricky had stolen the title of strangest. She had dressed up a bit—and wore a top that concealed a bit more of her bosom—but none of that mattered if she couldn't find the place. She'd had to park her bike a bit away, as she was too paranoid of the unfamiliar area to leave it there unattended. Walking had taken a bit longer than she'd intended, but she'd made good time and was only a minute late.
But then she had to stop, fix her hair, and reapply her lipstick—straighten out the creases in her clothes. All those necessary, time consuming and tedious feminine actions. Stepping into the diner, she made a quick assessment; it wasn't the fancy French cuisine she'd been dreaming of, but—hey. There was a cute enough guy that fancied the same coffee shop she did; there was still time to hit it off with him and see if he had more exotic tastes.
Not that she was so ready to ditch Ricky…she just didn't know exactly what he looked like. Walking into the diner, she figured any of the patrons could have easily been Troy Page in disguise, and with her options between shouting out 'Ricky' to see which one looked and trying to pick which one was him, she decided to take her chances with discretion.
She glanced at the people dining and made a quick assessment. Troy wasn't a woman, so that immediately cut out a fair share of the population, nor did she imagine he was over the age of fifty. Theoretically he would have shown up alone, so all she had to do was find the single white male under the age of fifty that just so happened to look like stripper material.
That wasn't so hard.
And, in fact, she'd spotted a guy that fit the bill, so with her best smile and her sweetest voice, she approached and inquired, "Ricky?"

"Yup!" Ricky beamed as he gestured for his date to take a seat. He didn't even need to use the name tag he had made for her to find him. Which was most likely a good thing, too, as the name tag read in poor, childlike handwriting: Richy Ricky. "Erm, you are Anella right?" he asked, wanting to make sure he didn't just ask a stranger to join him on a date. "Y'know, also Aventi---" he stopped himself. He shouldn't say that name in public, not as civilians. He was learning that! Progress! "Erm, I mean, heh." "Glad you can make it," he continued. "You look all real pretty and stuff." Ricky had such a way with words, knowing just how to get into a woman's heart by telling her she looked pretty and stuff.

Momentarily taken aback, Anella required an extra few seconds to figure out how to process Ricky's words. She flashed a smile and took a seat across from him. "Well, thank you, it's good to know all this work is appreciated. You're looking pretty good yourself."
It wasn't that she hadn't been on a date in so long that she found herself slightly awkward, but rather that most of her dates had always ended up ending on an off note, and this guy was, in some offhand way, like a coworker. Ideally, she'd appreciate a nice dinner with a guy she owed one to, and anything past that would make a good night better.
"But you don't seem like the type of guy who has to put a lot of effort into that, hmm?" she prompted, shifting positions until she was comfortable. "You probably have all the girls after you when you're not dressed like a monk, hmm?" Sans being a fairly goofy, easily distracted, typical guy, she didn't have much to complain about so far.

Ricky knew that he was being complimented, and grinned a bit at that. No matter how many compliments he got on his body or how he thought of himself, he always turned into a blushing schoolboy at the hint of flirtation. However, he only got the idea of some flirtation - there were parts that really confused him. "I dun know, I never dressed up as a monkey," he shrugged, his face still reddened. He wasn't quite sure what she was referring to there. "I hope you didn't have none troubles finding the place. The food here is mighty good though. You like burgers? They got the best burgers." Leave it to Ricky to begin a date talking about burgers.

"Oh, you are precious," she smiled, and despite thinking he really was adorable for that coloring, she couldn't resist the urge to tease him a bit for it. "It wasn't too hard to find the place. I've never heard of it though, so it did take me a while to pick it out. But, it's definitely worth it for the best burgers, as, I do happen to be very fond of them. Big, juicy, red burgers."
She was salivating just thinking about them, and for a few seconds longer, all she could do was envision the succulent flavors. It was with great effort that she shook her head and managed to direct her attention to the menu. "…You, ah. You bring all your girls here?" she asked, unable to resist prying. Even if she had insisted this was just to reward him for saving her a**, she couldn't help but want to know the typical, necessary details.

"Naw, normally I just bring girls back to my apartment," he said. Wait, that didn't sound classy at all. What he had meant was that he doesn't go on very many dates, although there wasn't really a classy way of saying he just has one-night-stands anyway. He quickly picked up his menu and buried his face behind it until he felt that he wasn't as red with embarrassment. "Erm, I just mean that I don't normally take girls on dates since most don't seem interested in knowin' me. Most think I'm like, too dumb or too stupid or too..." Ricky lost his train of thought. "But I'm sure you get taken on dates a lot," he suggested. "Pretty and nice girl like you."

Anella bit her lip and resisted a laugh; she wanted to be annoyed that Ricky was a guy who took girls back to his apartment, but he seemed so simultaneously endearing. "You seem like a sweet guy, Ricky. I'm surprised more girls aren't clamoring to be in my seat."
She wasn't sure she could argue that he didn't seem like the brightest, but she'd rather be on a date with a dolt than a d**k. "I chase most guys away before the second date, I think." If not by the second date, by the first homecooked meal. "But that's okay," she shrugged, "I'd rather go on a ton of bad dates to make sure I find the right person than to jump at the first guy who bit. You know? Or maybe I'm just too picky."
She was definitely too picky. She wasn't looking for arm candy, she was looking for someone she could spend the rest of her life with. And have kids with. Lots of kids.

"Naw, I think I understand that," he said with a nod. He wasn't sure if he really did understand what he was saying - although if he did, he would find that he felt the same way. He felt it would have been bad, however, to say he had no idea what she was talking about and would just seem like an idiot. "I don't know why you think you chase guys away though. You ain't scaring me away," he offered with a light smile.

A coy smile planted itself on her face as she looked up at him, and in a way she seemed as amused as she was touched. "There's that sweetness again. I can see how it only takes you a night to get the girls to come back with you. I can play nice for as long as possible, but then it gets into the interesting questions. You know—what do you do for fun, tell me about your family. What do you want to do with your life. Which—you know, is mostly where I lose them. See. I'll be honest with you, Ricky. Mostly because you're the first boy I've gone to dinner with that I know has the same late night hobbies as me."
Which was the discrete way of saying she knew he could understand powering up and what sort of life that came with. "But beyond that, what. I like guns. I, in fact, have a lot of them. So that loses some boys, because who wants to piss of a girl with a wall of guns? And then there's my dog. Who is big. Great Dane mix, I don't wholly know all of what he is. My dad's a big guy, that gets a few more. Oh—and I want kids. I mean, I've got some career plans and all? But that's pretty much the big 'to-do'. I just like babies so much, Ricky. You don't even understand. I just wanna pinch their little cheeks and—"
She was gushing. And she could have gushed for a while. It took great control to pull herself away from pinching the air like she was pinching at some poor infant's face. "—And get married. I mean, maybe not right now. But I like to make it well known that I do want that. And that chases the rest of them away because oh my God, commitment. You know? So. Not that this is a date date or anything, so I'm sure it's not like a lot of this applies to you at all. I told you, I'm just taking you out to dinner because you saved my a**."

Unfortunately for them both, Ricky's tendency to misunderstand was kicking in again. Her reference to having the same late night hobbies did not signal 'Knight' to Ricky, but instead signaled Anella as another stripper. "Erm, my family's in 'Bama and uh...," he started, losing his train of thought with his own life and finding more interest in her life. A stripper who apparently likes guns, big dogs, and babies. They had so much in common, Ricky thought. "Aw! I like guns and babies too," he beamed. "Not together, that's probably dangerous I'd reckon. But my uncle and I used to go hunting down in 'Bama every now and then, ever since I was maybe six. Just deer and rabbit mostly, but aw s**t it was fun. I haven't gone shootin' at all since I moved here." "But aw, man, I had no idea you were a stripper too," Ricky smiled. Or wait, were female strippers called something else? "Or is it prostitute? Whore?" He really didn't know the right term, but as soon as he spoke he had a feeling to put his foot in his mouth.

Anella instantly froze and lowered her menu so she could look into Ricky's eyes. There was a certain level of confusion—and a certain level of understanding. She wasn't sure how to clarify what she'd meant without outright saying it, and blurting 'Oh my gawd, I'm not a stripper what is wrong with you' didn't seem appropriate. At first, she'd been delighted; she didn't know much about Alabama sans the cliché, but guns and babies were nice. But then--did she really look like a stripper? Was that an insult? ...No, it must have been some sort of intended flattery. Minus the prostitute part.
"Uhm. No," she said carefully, "I'm actually not. I meant…You know, you remember how we met…?" she prompted. "I meant that. —You're a stripper?" she asked, shifting positions and leaning forward in her seat. She was thoroughly amused with the concept; she wore a bemused smile. "Where? Maybe I'll come visit you some time. Or, you know. Maybe we could go hunting one weekend or something, instead."

"Erm, yeah, I thought you knew that," Ricky said, his face turning red. He did tell her he was a stripper, right? He could have sworn he told her when they were both Knights --- oh! That's what she was referring to. The sudden realization was evident through his expression. "Oh right, yeah, that's what you meant. D'oh!" "Aw, naw, you wouldn't want to see me strip naked," he insisted. Wait, no, that wasn't what he wanted to say, was it? "I mean, do you? Er, you can if you want, I don't mind doing that for you none. I mean, uhm. The club's a dirty ol' place but I can get naked in private and uh...yeah, we can go huntin'." Ricky was looking for that waitress to break some awkwardness.

Though Aventine's face had pinkened a little, she wasn't squirming in her seat or dying for an excuse to get out of there. "Dirty? Well, then maybe it's best I keep myself out of it. But, well I mean, that's awfully sweet of you." Naturally she was curious—if this was some guy who people paid to take off his clothes, he had to have a nice body. And she certainly liked what she did see, so…
Too bad it just wasn't really dinner-appropriate conversation. She didn't really hesitate to change the subject. "We'll have to figure something out after dinner. Which," she leaned back in her seat and skimmed the room to see what everyone else was eating. "Looks like it'll be delicious, right? I'm starving over here. I'm starting to think those people over there are starting to look edible."

Ricky gave a nod and called over the waitress for them both to order their food. It didn't take long for the food to come back out - it was a diner, not a fancy tableclothed place - and both of them were so hungry and focused on their food, they barely spoke as they wolfed down the food except for Ricky's occasional blabbering about how good the burger was. It wasn't until all the food was gone and the waitress had placed down the bill at the table that Ricky was able to focus on speaking to his date again. "Good burger, right?" he confirmed with a smile. "There anywhere you wanna go after this?" He reached out for the bill and pulled out his wallet, ready to pay. He knew that city girls often tried to go dutch on the bill, but he was a bit more old-fashioned as he placed down enough bills to cover the expense and tip.
