One of my favorite book series is being adapted into a manga series. [Soulless, The Manga. Second volume just came out this week.]
The thing is, the original series is sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk written by a British-American author. The graphic novels are gorgeous, but I find a huge disconnect because of the major style/theme clash.
For example, Alexia the protagonist is beautiful in the manga... but in the books, she's described as [not un]attractive but very Italian. Manga-style just doesn't convey that! Larger nose, dark skin, etc.
I've read other mangas in the past that are retellings of English fairy-tales or historical events, and it's just hard for me to mesh the two together. [Asian style with U.K./American setting.]
Has anyone else come across this? (If so, examples?) Or am I just getting distracted by something unnecessary?

I've come across this several times. I'm one of those people who can find something good in an anime or manga regardless of how bad it is, and who loves to see classic fairytales retold. For me, it's more about how each storyteller approaches the work rather than the quality of the work itself.
I enjoyed the Soulless manga a lot (thanks for turning me onto that, LML!). There are things I think could have been done better in it, and things that I though came out better than the original book. It was interesting to see how the story changed through the medium of manga due to the different storytelling techniques manga uses.
Lord Akeldama was rendered really well in the manga, in my opinion. He's such a fabulous vampire man! cat_xd

But, yeah, sometimes it just strikes me how weird it is to see these proper British ladies and gentlemen with Japanese manga facial expressions.
PS. She's coming out with a Young Adult series that takes place in the same world and then another Adult series that follows a grown up Prudence twenty-five years later.
