For some time now, I have been entertaining the idea of creating a Minecraft world based on POTS, with full scale replicas of all of the villages and such. Understandably, this is insane, and will probably never happen because i am lazy.
However, more recently I expanded a bit on this idea, and was wondering if anyone would be interested. It would be possible to make such a world, if we had a multiplayer server and everyone worked together to build the locations. It would also be a lot more fun than one person trying to do it alone.
Now, this comes with obvious problems. I could start up said server right now, but it would probably hold up to three people before lagging out or crashing. So, first problem would be a host. If anyone is interested in the idea, and would be able to host a stable server on their computer, please, let us know. Alternatively if enough people were interested, and had some money to waste (Not going to claim it's anything but that.), we could rent a server from one of the many hosting companies that have sprung up around the game. That would of course end the minute we ran out of money to pay for the server.
And lastly, in the event that any of this actually goes anywhere but an idea in my head (Admittedly unlikely.), there are specific details to consider on the server. Are there any mods people would be interested in seeing active on such a server? Should it be straight creative or survival? Should it be creative to build, and then switch to survival? Things like that.
And just so it's blatantly obvious, this entire idea is very much a pipe dream. I don't expect it to go anywhere, though I would love it if it did, so don't expect anything.
Edit: According to "http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/", my computer could handle up to four players other than myself. Not that useful really. I just don't have a good internet speed.
~~~
A more possible alternative, for those who took interest in the idea of a village mass build, is that of single player group building. Essentially that would mean that you build something in single player, turn it into a schematic with Worldedit (Or some equivalent.), and share that, and whoever heads the thing compiles them all into one world. Sharing the world file could also be done, with similar methodology.
~~~
If anyone holds any interest in either of these ideas, or even if it doesn't interest you at all, go ahead and say something. I'd love to hear either way.
~~~
Mods Worldedit (For fairly obvious reasons) Redpower (Microblocks) ((If the idea holds any interest, it will probably have to wait until this mod is updated.))
Kumogakure would definitely need the computercraft/industrialcraft. Not sure if you can get that as a standalone mod, or if we'd need to have a tekkit server, and then simply disable the mods that would be far too OP to exist in the world. ( Equivalent exchange for example. )
Sunagakure would need... MAtmos. ( It is the thing that makes the wind noise and all the other weather sounds for Tekkit. )
Kirigakure could use more boats. If you know of a mod that allows for extra boats, then that would be cool.
And Konohagakure would naturally use the Forestry mod.
ALSO! I'd like to see Mo' Creatures instated, as the standard mobs tend to get boring after a while.
Further tests on that server site, after messing around with stuff that supposedly makes your internet faster, have come up with results of up to nine players. I seem to be averaging around six now, so, maybe...
Redpower, if it ever updated, has most everything that you could need to make Kumo factories look nice and high tech. Computers, and tubes, and... Stuff. If we wanted to make it survival rather than just a mass build server, I'd certainly consider more flavor mods like that, but probably none too high tech/easy. Environment and all that.
Matmos probably wouldn't actually make any wind sounds in Suna. It only starts the wind after you reach a certain height. That's also a client side mod, not server, so not really necessary to think about.
I would love a mod that added more boats, but most likely the best you'd get is whatever you can build until such functionality is added to vanilla. (It is an interesting idea if we considered making it an RP server of sorts.
What does the forestry mod actually add? I've never used it or seen it used, so I don't really know.
Mo' Creatures is certainly a consideration if it became a survival world, but other than that, they'd likely be in the way. Is it even MP compatible yet? I know Tekkit doesn't have it, despite Technic including it.
Any ideas for building mods? That being mods that add extra building blocks or features, like Redpower? Redpower is easily one of my favorite mods, simply because it adds so many things you can use to build with. The actual redstone stuff is cool too.
Fun story time!:
Playing a private server with my brother, I was on alone one day, so I took a look in his basement. He was working on a buildcraft automatic crafting machine to build solar panels. it was massive, ugly, and inefficient, so I tore it out and started building a better one with Redpower. A few hours later, he took one look, got pissed, and made me tear it out again, then built a new one with Redpower stuff anyways. The new machine was also massive, ugly, and inefficient. In fact, it didn't even work, and he couldn't figure out why. It took me two whole days to get the thing to actually work, and even then you had to babysit it just in case one of the lines got blocked. XD
After even more fiddling, I've got my number at nine on every test. So, that's pretty cool. Might be able to actually host a semi-playable server, if I ever figure out how to set up a static IP, and possibly a dedicated/named/whatever it's called IP, so my actual IP isn't the one everyone gets to see. >.>
>.< I completely blanked, Redpower is with things like Blulectric stuff right? Then yeah, that would cover Kumo. Just for funzies, could Kumo receive the Television mod? =D
Matmos can be messed with by placing a windmill. xD Put one one layer underground, or on the top of small shops and we'd have wind noises. at least if I remember correctly it would function that way. I could have just been at a high altitude when I dealt with windmills.
Yeah, I don't think that any mods currently exist expanding the boat section, although several texture packs attempt to make them look better. ( I'd love it if we could get a canoe, or a long boat. )
Forestry, in my limited interaction with it, allows for a MUCH more expanded version of farming. Oh, and it includes the tree feller mod, which allows you to cut down trees by just destroying one block of it. ( Works on jungle trees too. ) EDIT: Forestry is tree farming on steroids when mixed with buildcraft.
Mo creatures only gets in the way if the server has the problematic mobs as spawning at a high rate. I'm not sure if it is MP compatible, I'll check on that. I've only played the technic pack due to the lack of people who have a tekkit server, so I didn't know tekkit itself didn't include it.
Industrial craft has scaffolding, which looks kinda nice, and functions as a ladder. Not to mention it gives you the option of mass producing things. ( By using the blue print thingy, it's name escapes me, you can create something that you've constructed, then made the blueprint for, and just mass produce it. Could be nice if we don't want to personalize the apartments. ) Not to mention Industrial craft comes with rum and beer.
xD That is why I enjoy equivalent exchange. I can get whatever I need, for absolutely nothing once I get a condenser and a collector. xD Plus, massive things are fun to play around with. ( If you're using the right version you can make an endless loop of increasing EMC with a single bone, a macerator, and two condensers. It is great for mass producing something. Same with Blaze rods. )
EDIT: Okay, I thought about it, and anything beyond Tekkit, I probably can't help with since I don't know much about any other mods.
Dunno what the television mod is, but probably not. XD
I don't think MAtmos is inherently linked to windmills. Not sure though, you can experiment with that if you'd like.
I'd like a mod similar to the airship mod I've heard of, that would let you build a boat of your own design, with specific blocks included that glue it all together and let it move. It'd be awesome. (Thinking on it, we could come up with redpower frames controlling boats and give the illusion of working ships that just go from one point to another. They wouldn't be able to turn around of course, but it'd be cool for ferries.)
Treecapitator is an amazing mod.
I once had an ogre spawn on top of a cool house I built inside a carved out mountain. Somehow it sensed me through the roof, and smashed it's way in and destroyed my entire place. Ever since then, if I have Mo' creatures on, I disabled ogres. Honestly though, most of the Mo'Creatures mobs make horrible obnoxious and occasionally terrifying noises, and I hate them. I like most of the actual mobs, but the noises are terrible...
Scaffolding could be fun. I've never used it myself, but I have seen it used as an excellent building material.
Mass producing buildings can easily be done without the industrialcraft stuff. Worldedit has commands for that. One of the many reasons I would include it as one of the first mods added to the server.
Equivalent exhange is my favorite gameplay mod. Unfortunately it's rather OP for actual survival use though, since it only takes a matter of a couple days to get completely kitted out in the best equipment ever, and never need to mine again. And it only gets worse if you combine it with other mods. I built a fully self powered infinite energy and red matter machine, that only took up a space of about fifteen blocks square. (Blaze rod duplicator farm fueling a geothermal generator.) needless to say, I won't be including EE in the server setup. XD
~~~
If it wasn't so late already (I'll be going to bed in about an hour.), I'd try starting up a test server just to see if you could connect, and see if there's any lag and such. I don't want to do this until RP updates, since microblocks are the best building material ever, but knowing if I could host at all would certainly be a good start.
Try looking for mods that:
Add wool colors Add building materials Add interesting building features (Stuff like the RP frames for instance, or the BTW windmills. I might, once everything is going, try out Ugocraft or whatever it's called to see if it works along with any other mods we go for.) Change biomes Create awesome mountain regions Create realistic deserts Alter world generation in awesome ways while not being incompatible with other mods

It allows you to make a screen in Minecraft play a video. So basically we could have Naruto playing while role-playing Naruto. xD
Ah, I'll check it out on my version of tekkit. ( I don't have the updated version for some reason.
Airship mod would demolish the server. xD Simon and Lewis had trouble handling it. ( They were also using it as a portable quarry, but still. >.> ) Yeah, they'd have to move in straight lines, and they'd have to be either spamming a button, or be on repeaters. Although actually, if we make a barge type ferry, then we could avoid having one way ones and have it be on a circular track. ( More rectangular than circular, but oh well. xD )
Forestry is a more expanded version of that mod I think.
Yeah, the noises are odd. If you want, I could make different audio bites for each of the mobs and then you could replace the current ones with it, or I could. I think I know how to get into the audio for mobs without going through the coding. ( I've yet to learn a coding language. TT^TT )
Yeah, it is amazing. You couldn't make an entire building out of it, but it would look amazing in Kumogakure since it would look like it is being built up even more, and would just look really advanced and industrial. And then it makes an excellent foundation if we're going to have the Kirigakure homes raised due to possible flooding at times of the year. Only problem is if you destroy the source block for your scaffolding, or one in between pieces, your entire scaffolding will fall down past that piece. And you can only place three out without something beneath it.
Ah, I haven't played with world edit, but Sjin has used quite a bit of it in his Let's builds, so I guess I just forgot about World Edit having that ability. xD
Oh, of course it is OP. Get one collector and leave your game on for a long period of time while you're afk, possibly overnight, and you've got enough glowstone to make as many more collectors you want. xD And yeah, that combination is just unfairly powerful.
Yeah, maybe tomorrow, or monday after I get out of school, unless you have time to try with other people. I could get you into contact with someone who can set up a server if you need any advice. He is better than me with that sort of thing, but he still has some things he doesn't exactly know.
Mods I've found More (Wool) Colors - Adds 256 colors of wool. No recipes as of yet, nor names. More Building Blocks - Not sure if it is complete, but it adds some building blocks. Decoratives Mod - IT GIVES US TABLES AND CHAIRS!!! TABLES AND CHAIRS!!! SIT IN ABLE CHAIRS!!! But it is only up to 1.3.2... Also, stained glass, and some other things. aaaand, I'm wanting to play planet side, so I'm going to stop there for now.. ^>^ I'll find some for the other ones later.

If anyone wants, I have had a server up for my own use the last couple days, and I can let you on just to see how it holds up. If it seems to work good, I can even start a new world and do a group play thing. (Not really fair to make you start from scratch, considering I have tons of red matter all over the map just waiting to be turned into anything I want. Though you could easily take over my brother's old house and red matter generator too...)
If it's not obvious yet, the server is Tekkit.

Found a pretty cool map editor/creator that I can use not just to build the giant mountains for Kumo, but also to build the entire world as I please and assign all the biomes and stuff manually. Because that is awesome, I've decided to give it a shot.
After working for awhile to get an idea of the program, I built a fairly nice representation of Oto. Seeing it was pretty cool, I decided I wanted to take pictures to share, and as a result, managed to destroy it to where I can't use it anymore... Got nice pictures though! And since it was a small area, should rebuild easily enough.
So, Rice Country!
A view of Rice country from the top of the largest mountain in the country.
A view of the largest mountain, from below.
The rolling landscape of Rice, just waiting to be irrigated and covered in fields of... Wheat. Also with a slight glimpse of the Valley of the End statues, which are in this really just spikes of rock. They'll have to be carved in game.
The smooth mountains of rice, seen from near the VOTE.
And an overview of the entire area from above, and at a rather awkward angle, provided by the program's 3D viewer.
Edit: Huh, not sure why it's so tiny. It's huge on my PC. Edit2: Figured it out and fixed it. The picture should update soon with a bigger version. Not sure how long it takes Photobucket to update the change.
So, thoughts on that if you'd like. Suggestions for any of the other lands/villages/places, or even just random things to toss in here and there to make non-village areas look just plain awesome as well and break up the likely monotony of the world.
For reference, I'm using this map to map out the world.
(The program even comes with an image overlay, so I can work with the picture pasted right on top of the map for tracing. XD On that note, I can probably use topography type images to map stuff out too. I need stuff like places to run rivers and finer details for lands and such, since, as you can see, none of that is marked out on the reference image.
For fun, I'm going to finish this up even if nobody is interested, and keep posting updates like this until the world is done/ready for population.

The reference image doesn't work for me. TT^TT
Is the Rice country really that hilly? O.o I thought it was going to be more like large valleys with quite a few hills, but maybe not that hilly. Maybe because it is relatively small, but spread that area out ot fill the entire square there, and it would look amazing.

Reference image kept conking out... Probably because the site I was leeching it from didn't like the bandwidth being stolen. So, I uploaded my own. I've also made some edits right on it adding where I'm thinking of including rivers and stuff. Also doubled the size of wave, cause, well, I wouldn't have been able to hardly fit one building on it as it was, much less an entire village. I'm thinking of having some floating buildings in Wave as well, cause that'd be fun.
The rice country is written, in POTS, as being quite mountainous. I am however, on the next rendition, going to tame it down a bit for more work space. Most likely a ring mountain range around the back with a nice valley in the middle.
I've also taken the liberty, since it's not shown in the references I've got anywhere, of putting Iron country where they claim on the original the Akatsuki base is supposed to be. It's a good place for it after all, and I rather want to try building that cool mountain.
Still, any recommendations for places to put various landmarks and additions will be good. You can describe it to me, or even download that map and make your own edits and show me your copy. If I like it, I'll throw it in.

I have no clue where Wave Country is, even with the map. ^^"
I understand it is mountainous, but I thought it would have been more along the lines of huge hills with large valleys between. Kinda like your basin idea, but maybe with scattered hills. Or maybe just larger edges on the hills themselves. ( Not much work room on the edges of the hills, although it could be done. ) Basically I'm just thinking it needs more work space. ^>^
I always thought that Akatsuki was based out of Amegakure, or the ruins of it. xD I still haven't gotten in any way shape or form past season 3 of Naruto. sweatdrop
One of the nearby islands of Kiri needs to have an underground estuary type area, for the Hoshigaki. We'll also need to have the village that Kumo and Kiri are making. ( Which where on this map would that be placed? Shimo maybe? )

Wave is the pale blue island to the right of fire. I didn't re-mark it after I resized it, so it's easy to miss I suppose.
You have to understand that there isn't infinite space to work with. The larger I make the world, the more space, but also the more the program lags and the harder it is to get all the space filled in the end. At the current size, according to the program, it'd take about two Minecraft days to walk from the far edge of lightning to the far edge of Suna, so it's a pretty good scale.
I did intend to have the hills in rice layered like you said, with irrigated paddies on the and stuff. That fine detail sculpting however, would be done in game, not in the editor. All I can really do with this is make the basic shape, raise hills, lower craters, place rivers and biomes, that sort of stuff. I can't even make caves or overhangs, so any of that will have to be done in game too.
I thought the base was in Ame too, so yeah, that's odd. =/
And yes, Shimo will go in Shimo. XD
Posted: Thu Dec 06, 2012 6:10 pm
Ah, okay. xD
Ah, so you're literally sculpting the world like that. Yeah, if it would lag it up that bad, I'd say keep it at that size. It'll be better to have stuff that size than have your comp lagging out. =P
Yeah, I could help with the layering when you have the world up and running. Then you could put whatever you want in there, since I won't have anything else to do with Oto. xD Wait, you can't hollow things out like that? Aww, that bites. That means all of that stuff we mess with will have to be done manually. xD
Yeah. xD
Oh, that is Shimo? I forgot what the village is that the two were going to found. sweatdrop

Well, I figure having to fine tune overhangs and caves and such in game is better than having to do them, AND the mountains as well. Not to mention biomes, as Hikaro brought up to me. It's better to do that stuff in game anyways though, since you get a better view of it all. I mean, I was trying to figure out how to dig out the shorelines and ended up going to bedrock in some places and not far enough in others, with not much clear way to tell the difference. The editor doesn't seem quite as easy as I'd like. XD
