Lily was currently getting dressed so she could go to the mall with Paris. She had called Paris, letting the boy know she was back and town and if he wanted to go to the mall. Getting an agreement she warned the boy not to be too surprised and that she would explain what she meant at the mall. After she went to rummage through the closet she had in Phina's room. It had clothes she and Alex bought for her disguise in it as well as some of her own clothes.

Currently she worn a pair of loose straight leg jeans, which she didn't really like, it was paired with a graphic tee, and a leather jacket, and a scarf to hide the more obvious parts of her anatomy. Grabbing a hat, she pulled it on, her red curls sticking out beneath it. She didn't worry to much about it as she wasn't the only person on the planet with red hair.

Looking herself over in the mirror she frowned, at the person who looked back at her, feeling like a coward. She just wasn't ready to talk to them yet and she didn't want to be found so this was it. She'd never get use to it and didn't plan on doing so.

"I'm going out Phina," she called to her former boss," I promise to bring your car back in one piece."

Paris didn’t have the convenience of a car to use, not unless he wanted to drive Chris’s, but lack of confidence in that area tended to hold him back. Instead, he made use of the scooter he’d been gifted upon entering college, figuring he might as well use it while he could. He didn’t think he’d like to try it when the weather turned bad, especially once it started to snow, and with how cold it had been getting recently he figured the winter storms were right around the corner.

He found a spot in the parking lot, cut the engine, kicked down the kickstand, and hopped off to start removing his helmet and the riding gloves that weren’t really necessary but still looked cool anyway.

Lily had been gone… a while by now. She’d left rather suddenly from what he could remember, and though he couldn’t really blame her or anyone else for getting the hell out of dodge for a while, he’d still missed her a lot. He didn’t have many dancer friends. Most of the people in his classes he tended to keep his distance from due to rivalry and competition and just not liking them as people, but Lily was easy to like. He felt like he’d missed out on something, not being able to tell her about his accomplishments or invite her to some of his performances.

Well, he could have invited her, but in being so far away it hadn’t ever seemed like she’d be able to come.

Paris went ahead and slipped through the doors of the mall once he’d put his helmet and gloves away. They’d agreed to meet at one of the entrances, and he figured it would be alright to stand just inside since it was a little cold out. For once his hair was down—it always seemed to be up these days with so much dancing—though he still wore tights beneath a skirt, with a flattering top and a pair of fashion boots on his feet, as seemed appropriate for the season.

Every once in a while he checked his phone for the time or a possible text from Lily, anxious to find out why he should try to contain his surprise.

He was already totally jealous that she’d been able to see the Royal Ballet live during her time overseas. He didn’t think he could contain any more jealousy.

Lily frowned looking at the time as she parked, she had hit some traffic and though she wasn't late per say she didn't want to have kept Paris waiting. She hurried out of the car, making sure she had her bank card and some cash in her pockets, not having a purse was a drag.

Fixing her scarf she headed for the entrance of the mall, looking around outside to see if she spotted Paris before heading inside and spotting the blonde standing off to the side. She gave a bright grin and walked, "Hey Paris."

She stopped in front of the blonde and couldn't keep from smiling, as she grabbed her friend to pull him into a tight hug. "England hasn't been fun for months. I've really missed all my friends so much. Did you get the package I sent you."

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR?” was the first thing out of Paris’s mouth in the midst of the hug, which he returned spiritedly but which he broke soon afterwards in order to do another once-over. Or maybe it was a twice-over. Or a thrice-over.

Either way, he took his time taking it all in.

It wasn’t so much that her hair looked bad, because it didn’t, though he couldn’t see all of it under her hat. It was just that it was short. Probably really cute, actually, but he wasn’t used to seeing her like that at all. And she’d always had such lovely hair. As much as he loved his own, he had to admit Lily’s was such a lovely color, and it curled so prettily, and it had just… suited her so well. He didn’t have anything against short hair, since his had been rather Shirley Temple-like for most of his life instead of the long style he sported now, but it was different and it would take some time to get over the fact that all those long, beautiful curls had been hacked off.

That, and—

“And what are you wearing? My god. What did England do to you? I thought they dressed well over there. Wait, am I being insensitive? Is this… I mean, how you want to dress? I never really got that impression but, hey, whatever makes you comfortable. Work it, girl. God, you have no idea how jealous I am. I got your package and I was just… ugh… so jealous. If I ever got to see Marianela Núñez live, I think I would die.”

And he rambled on and on and on. In his defense, he hadn’t been able to speak with her at length for a while. He had a lot of catching up to do!

Lily could help, but to laugh because boy did Paris sound like Alex. She was still rather amused by this reaction to her hair. She liked it long, even though the short cut was nice and she really did like it. It seemed though most people like it long too. Alex, Zia, and now Paris seemed to share the same opinion

"I didn't think everyone would really care if I cut it. You sound like Alex and Zia. I swear I thought Zia was going to cry," she said grinning. "I'll say the same thing I said to her I promise to grow it back. This is just for now. I like it though, it makes me look a little older." She reached up to mess her curls slightly and remembered the hat, which she pulled off for the time being. Shaking her head to get the curls in a place she smiled while listening to Paris ramble on, trying to keep track of all the words.

All the answers were clambering their way to the forefront of her mind, but when Paris' ramble ended she just sort of blinked.

"Um ... I well you see. That is to say, I'm hiding from my family. That little trip to England turned into a move that I didn't exactly agree too. I sort of ran off three weeks ago and they are looking for me, but I don't want to talk to them right now. Ugh, it's complicated." She was rambling and not really looking at Paris. Even though she did want to talk about it, it was a rush of words before she went right on to the next thing.

She turned and looked over the stores, "shall we shop. I can tell you more about everything as we look for some new things for the changing weather."

She looked to Paris, "I'm only dressing like this until I'm ready to go have a little chat with my parents. I really don't get there weird actions lately. It's driving me batty. I think they forgot I'm an adult, even if no I'm not really currently acting like one."

She wrinkled her nose not really knowing which store to go to, "but the ballet was amazing and Núñez is awe inspired. They all are. Maybe you can go sometime. My family now lives in the English country side, no matter how mad I am now and how really mad they probably are I see lots of visits in the future. You could come with me one day, see the ballet every night if you like."

"Now, which store should we go to first," she said grinning and still looking around. She really really did miss her friend and was happy to have another person to rant to. It calmed her ire and she figured it wouldn't be long until she was having it out with her parents over the whole situation.

“Trust me, I totally understand the complicated family stuff,” Paris said, settling down now that he’d been through his moment of surprise. He did continue to glance over Lily from time to time, though, trying to get used to this new look of hers.

He did not, however, continue on that vein of thought, at least not in regards to his own family. He talked about his father with very few people, though he assumed it would be something he’d have to at least mention at some point. One’s parent dying was kind of a big thing that couldn’t go without comment forever, though he would hold off on it for as long as he could. It hurt still, and while the sympathy he often got from people was often touching, it didn’t always make him feel good. There was still too much guilt there, and the reminders only made it worse.

Nor did he say anything about his mother or his new kid sister, even if he was adapting rather well to that situation. He was much more interested in hearing about Lily’s problems than even trying to get into any of his own.

Instead, he picked up on something else. “Zia…” he wondered. “Wait, Chris knows a Zia. And Chris knows you. So is this the same person?”

The name ‘Alex’ garnered slightly less attention. The only Alex Paris knew was the one he’d met at the plant nursery and who he was in the midst of teaching French, but as ‘Alex’ was a far more common name it seemed less likely to be the same person.

“Just for that, I’m buying more clothes. Chris shoved his credit card at me before I left. I didn’t intend to use it since I have my own, but if you know his best friend and I don’t, I figure a large bill is just what he deserves. Actually, you know what? Scratch that. It would probably bother him more if I used my own money anyway,” Paris rambled on, pausing just long enough to roll his eyes. “But if you don’t want to do any clothes shopping… like, if trying stuff on would clash with the whole disguise thing, we can pick something else to do. I should probably start Christmas shopping anyway. Ugh, I’m so bad at buying things for other people.”

Lily smiled at Paris stuffing her hat in her pocket happy she wouldn't have to go into detail. She still didn't know why her parents hijacked her family, well she suspected, but that suspicion wasn't confirmed. She had a feeling though when she went to her parents they would be discussing the problem no longer secret aspect of her life and she really didn't want to.

Lily gave a grin and nodded, "Yes, there the same. I met Zia quite a while ago and later found out she was friends with Chris. We get on well. Of my friends other than Alex and you, she's the only other person who knows I'm back from England."

She laughed lightly as Paris's logic, but she had no problems with buying new clothes. What else did one come to a mall for anyway, mostly to buy clothes. She did frown her face up at the little issue, but decided to risk it. She figured as long as she used the big dressing room because they always had one she would be fine.

"I think it should be fine, but I've got to do some Christmas shopping too if you'd rather. I love buying things for other people, its myself I'm terrible at buying stuff for. All those lovely clothes in my closet," she sighed and shook her head, "my sister bought almost all of them. Maybe you can help me with that. I always love your clothes. They are so pretty."

She gave a small laugh and pointed out a store she heard her sister talking about once, "how about that one? Rose says they have some of the best merchandise, plus it one of her favorites and I need to get her a present too. You remember Rose right, my sister, I think you met her once."

“Yeah, once, I think. Last year,” Paris replied.

From what he’d remembered she’d been nice enough, not the sort of family he expected from well-off people, but since he hadn’t really known very many well-off people for much of his life he’d resorted a bit to stereotypes when it came to his expectations of them. He was quickly learning that what he’d come to expect from people was not often the case. Chris’s family certainly never treated him poorly, and neither Lily nor Lily’s sister had ever made him feel any less than human.

He wondered why Lily would even run away from a family like that. He was sure there were reasons. Paris didn’t think it was like Lily to overreact and leave over something stupid, but it was a curiosity. He was tempted to ask, but the mall didn’t exactly seem like the place for that.

Well, he could always put in a few comments here and there and see if she’d talk about it on her own.

“You gonna buy anything for your family?” he wondered, turning toward the store Lily’d pointed out. “I should at least get something for my mom, but she’s so hard to shop for. And Chris. I never know what to get him. What do you get someone who has everything and doesn’t really want anything? I guess I could wrap myself up in bow ribbons, but that’s not much different from every other day. Not much of a gift.”

Paris pondered this issue for a few moments. Gift-giving had always been difficult for him, partly because there hadn’t been much gift-giving going on in his family when his family had just consisted of he and his dad. Now there were a lot more people he cared about in his life, and he was sure Chris meant to get him something special, so it seemed only appropriate to return the favor.

She blinked having spaced out momentarily, "Yes, I have to get things for my mom, dad, Xander and Rose. I also have to get things for lots of other people, but I will probably just get things for Zia and Rose in here." She gave a small smile.

Lily walked into the store with Paris, stopping to try to figure out which section to go to first. Rose and Zia were two totally different people, but this store sold, clothes and accessories so she didn't think it would be exceedingly hard to find something for both.

She laughed lightly at the statement of Paris wrapping himself up in bows and shook her head, "I don't really know, but I don't think they will really care what it is because it's from you. You know. Rose told me one time I got Xander the most horrid red sweater that clashed with his hair terribly, but he wore it out to dinner just because I got it for him. I was really little then, I don't even remember."

Lily grabbed Paris' arm pointing the purse, "let go look over here. Maybe your mom will like one of the purses they have. I'm sure Rose would like that turquoise one over their, she likes unique things."

The more Lily dropped the particular name, the more Paris tried not to let it bother him that Lily knew Chris’s best friend and he didn’t, because it really wasn’t such a big deal, or at least he didn’t think it should be. But the more he tried the more he realized that it did sort of bother him a bit, not because he was particularly itching to meet this girl Chris had been trying to get to turn into a knight—and why he would want to do something like that, Paris still had absolutely no idea—but because it just seemed like one of those things normal people should do. Meet each other’s best friends and such, get their approval, that sort of thing.

And Paris was all about trying to live a normal life these days, at least when he wasn’t running around town at night in frilly superhero attire.

Besides, Chris had already met his best friend. Chris had met his best friend before he even realized Paris was lying to him about the whole “yeah, I’m totally a girl and go to Crystal on a dance scholarship” thing. Chris had met his best friend and let his best friend sleep in his bed.

Yeah.

“Too bad I already got him a ukulele for his birthday,” Paris said on a sigh. “I suppose I could go with clothes. But he has so many already and I always buy him clothes. God, he has, like, everything. And he’s not the jewelry type. The last time we went into a jewelry store it was really, really, really awkward.”

Compulsively, he twisted the promise ring he now wore as a result of that awkward occasion around and around his left ring finger.

“A purse might be alright for Mom, though. Maybe a bigger one. She usually carries around smaller ones, but, I mean, she could probably use a bigger one. More space and all. For… more things. Like stuff. Maybe red. No, no, or blue. Or just black. God, I don’t even know what colors she likes. I’m a terrible son. Not any of these neon colors. I don’t know why neon’s in season, but it’s terrible. I like the turquoise, though. You should get it. And if there’s something you really want, tell me and I’ll get it for you. Kinda like a ‘welcome home’ gift,” he said, smiling brightly even though he already felt like a complete failure.

Lily didn't really know if she could help with the birthday gift thing, it was hard to make suggestions for someone who has everything and baseball was going on at the moment so Paris couldn't take him to see a game or something. She tried to think of something, but just ended up looking at Paris in confusion as said a trip to the jewelry had been awkward.

"How was it awkward? I mean its just jewelry right. Does Chris not like jewelry or like not know the kind of jewelry you like," she asked clearing not seeing the big picture also not noticing the ring as she looked over purses.

"Your not a terrible son Paris. So you don't know you mother's favorite color, those sort of things change all the time. Frankly I don't know my mother's favorite color either. In my life span it has been peach, aquamarine, caramel and the apple red. I'd be lying if I said I knew what it was currently," she said picking up the turquoise purse and turning to Paris.

"Ive never been one for extraordinary bright color, so I don't care for the bright purses either but Rose will like it. And you don't have to get me anything, really I don't need anything," she said lying, but only just slightly about not not needing anything, "but for your mom, how about that one."

She pointed to a black purse fairly decent sized, with black cored handles and gold accents. She picked it up and opened it up, "It really roomy. Its got three large compartments to keep lot of things in."

“Hmmm, and black’s pretty neutral, isn’t it. I mean, it is. It goes with everything,” Paris observed, scrutinizing the purse Lily had suggested as if he was trying to find something wrong with it.

Really, he was just trying to convince himself to put more effort into the whole gift-giving thing rather than settling on the first thing he came across, even if the first thing he came across really was rather nice. After eight years of not worrying about gifts for anyone, it was a bit difficult to get back into the spirit of it, and not feel like he was terrible for not getting something a little more meaningful.

It wasn’t really his fault, was it? Everything didn’t have to be meaningful, he just liked to make a big deal out of everything.

“Chris and I sort of went to a jewelry store a couple months back,” he explained, figuring that wasn’t really a topic he could avoid for long with the promise ring sitting there so conspicuously on his finger. “He’s actually really good at picking out jewelry. I’m not really big on jewelry. I mean, I wear it, but it’s not one of those things I always have to look at, you know? Not like shoes. But he’s really good at picking out stuff that’s… well, you know, sort of me.

“But at the time we were just looking for something for my mom,” Paris continued, holding off on saying anything about the purpose of the intended gift, as he wasn’t of a mind to talk about his new baby sister just yet. “But one of the people who worked there, I guess she mistook us for an engaged couple or a soon-to-be engaged couple or whatever, or else she was just trying to get us to look at the rings or something, I don’t know, but Chris ended up buying me a promise ring,”

Paris brought his hand up to show her—a two carat asscher-cut diamond on a platinum band, with a pink sapphire on either side.

“It was just kind of awkward ‘cause the whole marriage thing came up,” he said, “and it’s not really something I’ve ever thought was really for me.”

Lily just nodded and watched as Paris looked over the purse but said softly, "you don't have to settle on something in this store of course. We have the whole mall to explore. I bet in one of these store you'll see something and you'll just know its for her."

She moved over to look at a few other purse, for other people, but her attention was called back to Paris as he sore of rambled on about his trip to the jewelry store with Chris. She had to say that the rambling had her super intrigued and so her full attention was on Paris and the story even if it was a bit confusing. Towards the end though she wore an amused smirk and at the presentation of the diamond ring she literally squealed which probably didn't help her disguise at all.

"That amazing, Paris. It's so beautiful," she said grinning, though her grin turned down at Paris' words. "Well things changed. I mean look at how all this started. Did you imagine when you met Chris that you would be standing here now wearing a promise ring?"

She really wasn't entirely sure that was the right thing to say, but it was the thing that popped up in her brain and tumbled out of her mouth. She just hoped it was reassuring and not the opposite.

Sunshine Alouette

Paris felt his cheeks warm up a bit at Lily’s squeal—which was completely ridiculous, in his opinion, because there was absolutely no reason for him to blush about something as innocent as a promise ring.

And that was exactly what he kept trying to tell himself it was: completely and utterly innocent.

A ring was a ring. It didn’t have to mean anything. It was just… there… to show that they were… serious… or whatever. It was a promise. That was the purpose of a promise ring, wasn’t it?

But even now, a couple of months later, he still wasn’t entirely certain he understood the promise they’d made to one another. Oh, he knew what they’d said to each other at the time, but something told him that that wasn’t all of it, that there was more there that he and Chris hadn’t explored yet, and Paris wasn’t sure how comfortable he was with that yet.

“If I’d imagined anything like this, I would have thought I was going crazy,” he said, as another smile broke out onto his face and he found himself laughing. “I wasn’t exactly being completely honest with him when we met, but…”

Paris had no idea how he’d meant to finish that thought, and so he shrugged as he went back to looking over some of the purse displays.

“Things change, I guess. People change, too. I guess that’s all part of growing up and figuring yourself out. Sometimes you find out there’s a lot more to you than you used to think there was, and that some things are more important than you’d ever thought they’d be.”

Lily grinned and laughed, "maybe, but you never know with these sort of things right. Nothing wrong with dreaming, just so long as you remember reality every now and then." Even though currently her own reality rather sucked, but at least she was home where she wanted to be with the friends that she loved, following what she knew was her destiny.

Lily nodded at Paris' words following her friend over to the rack of purses, "I understand exactly how you feel," she said softly.

She nugded Paris with a girlish grin, "Come on there are more than purse in here and we've got a whole mall to explore. Let's check out something else, no need to make a decision right away, right?"

She pointed to a rack that had some what she thought to be really cute dress, "over there looks like it might have something good."
