1692---the year of the infamous Salem Witch Trials. A terrible and trying time for many women of that time period. They were persecuted, accused of being evil, devilish creatures of the night. Most of these women were innocents. They were normal women, hated by others so it was easier to call them witches to get them out of the way. There was the odd occasion when a real witch was caught. However, a true witch could cast a spell to make it seem as if they did burn at the stake or died from hanging when in reality they would live to see another day.

2022-----The world has changed greatly. Everyone knows that witches do exist and there are people who hunt them down. These people have found ways to find real witches, and kill them. Although most witches choose to live on their own, they answer to one of the four great covens. These covens have been led by the same families for generations, and they are all led by women. Although men do have witch powers, it is the women who rule.

Cassandra sat at her table, looking around at the leaders of the other great witch covens. They were not really there in physical form, but with the help of a little bit of magic it seemed like they were. All the women assembled were young, ambitious and very smart. They, like their mothers and grandmothers before them had been specifically chosen to lead the covens. None knew the specifics of how or why they were chosen, but when they were born, they had the mark of their clan on the back of the neck. The clan leaders all came from the same bloodline and the tattoos were always in the same spot.

Things had gotten worse for witches all over the world in recent years. The witch hunters had become more powerful. Somehow, they too had a little bit of magic. Not near the power that natural born witches had, but enough to kill less skilled witches. That's what this meeting was about. They needed to find out who was betraying the witches and put an end to it.

At the moment an argument had erupted between Merida, the leader of the dark coven and Carolyn, the leader of the light coven. They were two polar opposites. Merida was for going head in, tracking down the betrayer and killing him or her on the spot. Carolyn, on the other hand, just wanted to find the person and question them as to why they were doing what they were doing.

"Enough!" Cassandra's voice echoed through the room, making the other three women look at her. She sighed and rubbed her eyes. "We do not have time for all of this fighting. We must reach a decision, and reach it soon. Our fellow witches will not last long out there with these hunters looking for them. Already we have lost too many."

"She is right," Amelia said, her unseeing eyes moving around the table as if she did see them. Her faithful pet sat by her, watching them. "But this is not the way to discuss things. I think we should let cooler heads prevail and take a break. Let us reconvene at a later date. Let's say two days from now?"

Amelia had a way of diffusing any situation and Cassandra was grateful for that. Soon the other two leaders had disappeared to go about their daily lives and only she and the leader of the Amaranths remained. "You do know that Merida may be right, don't you?" Amelia asked softly. "We may have no choice in the matter. If ending one life means saving thousands more, we will have to make that hard decision."

"Yes, I know," Cassandra sighed as she stood up. "But it isn't something we need to take lightly. Like you said, we will reconvene in a few days. Then we will decide what to do." When she too was gone Cassandra sank back into her chair. This was going to be the greatest test for everyone. And she feared that none of them would make it out unscathed.

Merrick Rei McCloud strode fluidly along the street, his dark brown-gold eyes scanning around cautiously. He wore black jeans, camouflage and dark brown cowboy boots. He also had on a dark red shirt with a gray wolf and full moon on it and a black leather jacket that stopped just above his knees; he barely seemed troubled by the sunset that was starting to dim. His gaze paused momentarily as he noticed a couple before he frowned, his eyes narrowing in the alleyway's mouth; he noticed a flicker of silver and pushed off on the balls of his feet, moving quickly. His hand snapped out, a flicker of semi-transparent silver flame detonating around his fingertips and palm before it slammed into the man's jaw, the force sending the man staggering to the side as his palm heel strike hit hard. The bowie knife skittered to the asphalt before he caught the guy by the neck of his shirt. He glanced momentarily to the redheaded girl, noting a flicker of green beneath the collar of her jacket along with an ever so slight flicker of red for a moment. "You okay?" he said quietly. She blinked before she nodded slowly. She shifted, not seeming to notice that her jacket slid off of her right shoulder, baring the rose on her shoulder. His hand flashed unconsciously upward, blocking the witch hunter's punch before his gaze shifted subtly to the hunter's dark gray eyes, which immediately widened in shock before Merrick's kick sent him staggering backwards suddenly into the dumpster that was easily a dozen feet away. He blinked, looking down at his still extended leg, which had the same flickering semi-transparent silvery aura around it before the aura vanished like a blown out flame. He dropped his leg and spun quickly, grabbing the girl's arm and pulling her alongside him as they ran out of the alley.

Merida fumed as she walked through the large house. That...twit from the Light cogent really truelly irked her. They should not be sitting around talking queitly about this. They should be out there, hunting the traitor and taking care of the problem. She stopped and took a deep breath as she reached the bottom of the stairs. Now was not the time to lose her cool. She needed to remain in control for the sake of her coven. Merida looked around and smiled a little as she watched her fellow witches doing their own thing. Not all the members of her coven lived here, just the ones that had nowhere to go. Each coven had a mansion with plently of rooms to house many witches.

"Elenor," Merida said to a passing witch who stopped and looked at her quizicaly. "I am going to go for a short walk. Keep an eye on the place for me?" Without waiting for a reply Merida put on her black trench coat and stepped outside. Underneath she wore black pants and a crimson silk shirt. Her brownish red hair hung loosely around her shoulders, hiding her tattoo. She walked down the long driveway and as the gate opened she stepped out onto the sidewalk.

Merida looked back at the mansion and sighed. She was glad that it was cloaked in magic. Only a fellow witch could find it and they had to mean nobody no harm. Now all they needed to do was protect all other witch homes like that.

Merrick grunted, not seeing the woman in the black jacket and crimson shirt several feet away as he felt heat explode in his abdomen. He noticed a flicker of red as the girl crouched next to him on the sidewalk. "I hope you're okay..." he managed before he grunted as a ripple of semi-transparent silvery flame ignited, swirling around him as if alive. He felt like it was the usual pins-and-needles sensation, but all over his body simultaneously.... and with red hot 'pins'.

Merida's senses prickled as she sensed two others near her. She turned on her heal and saw them. A young man and woman crouched on the sidewalk. Her head tilted to the side slightly as she regarded them. Around them was an aura that all coven leaders could see. They were both witches. The girl looked familiar, but Merida couldn't place her. She hurried to the two of them. "Well, looks like I found me two that need help. Lucky for you that I am out and about."

Merida looked up as she heard a shout and she grinned. "And you brought me a hunter. So sweet." She stood up slowly and looked down at the two. "I suggest you go into the gate." With a wave of her hand the gate of the mansion opened. She moved towards the hunter and when he pulled out a weapon to throw at her, Merida waved her hand and he was suddenly engulfed in flames. As he screamed, withering on the ground she turned to the two. "Well, get inside."

Alicia blinked, her gaze shifting from her savior. "Thank God... Lady Merida," she said with relief as she managed to lift the guy up and support him as both of them stumbled towards the mansion. "You know my aunt will be relieved... though that idiot she had 'protecting' me stupidly ran into that guy's friends and well... he didn't scream for long," she sighed as she walked up to Merida.

Merrick managed to open his eyes to slits as he huffed slowly and carefully. "He tried to attack..." Alicia,""... until I managed to get him to do his impersonation of a punted football," he said hoarsely.

That's where she knew her! Cassandra's little niece, Alicia. Merida smiled widely at the two of them. "Don't be too hard on that poor man that was supposed to be protecting you my dear. After all, men aren't as gifted as us in this craft. No offense." Merida said as she looked at Merrick. She led them to the mansion, the gates shutting behind them with a clang and the front door opening with a rush of wind. Several of the coven members stopped to look at them but when Merida just shook her head they went their own ways.

Merida turned back to the two. "Lucky you were so close to my place." She crossed her arms and stared at Alicia. "I am pleased to see you, don't get me wrong, but what are you doing in my neck of the woods Alicia? And does your Aunt know you're around here? I spoke with her not too long ago."

Alicia rolled her eyes; she knew her aunt knew she was in the area, but not that she was so close to the Dark coven's grounds. "She knows I'm around this area for studies in Gaelic, but not about what just happened," she said wryly. "I spoke to her this morning and she mentioned she'd be in a meeting, but not what it was about," she said with a grin; she knew Merida would know her natural curiosity... which had gotten her into trouble more than once.

Merrick exhaled hard, the aura slowly fading from around him. "Damn... I don't know what that was, but it happened when I coldcocked that guy too," he said hoarsely. Almost that moment he stumbled, his hand rising and brushing the steps as they reached the bottom. The instant he did, a runic circle ignited in a deep bluish silver color, glowing against his skin on the back of his hand.

"A meeting which will not be spoken about here," Merida said pointedly to Alicia. She knew how curious the young woman was and she was not about to answer questions right now. Not where everyone would hear them. She turned as Merrick spoke and when she saw the circle on his hand she knelt by him. "Now that is interesting." Merida stood up slowly and looked around. "You," she pointed to a member of the coven. "Would you please find Lorcan and tell him I need him in my study?"

As the young man hurried off she motioned for the other two to follow her. "Come, we have much to discuss. I will fill you in on what happened at the meeting."

Alicia sighed, rolling her eyes before she nodded. "I understand; the fewer ears to hear, the less chance of unfriendly others possibly learning of it," she said with a half smile; she was often teasing and, at times, flaky to others, but when it came to strategies and charms, she was damn near a genius.

Merrick tilted his head as he followed her, his muscles still very tensed and tight. He could feel ripples of cool air causing pulses of goosebumps to shift over his skin. He glanced in a mirror and paused momentarily, surprised his hair wasn't standing on end. He glanced down at his hand as the odd runic circle faded away, though the central circle simply faded to a deep purplish violet.

Lorcán O'Reily blinked, his gaze shifting to the young man who said Merida need to see him. He exhaled a sigh. "Wonder what it'll be about this time," he said slowly, his deep voice seeming to rumble from up under the floor itself as he stood from the stool where he'd been reading the Divine Comedy in Gaelic. He had also read it in Italian and English, though he had to admit, it was interesting to see how each translation shifted some of the details around.

Merida shut the door behind them before going to sit in her chair behind her desk. She looked at the two before her before speaking. "Now really isn't the time to be traveling alone. There are too many hunters that have grown stronger in their ability to find and kill our kind." She folded her hands together and leaned back in her chair. "Tell me, that symbol on your hand. Does it always appear like that?" She asked Merrick. She pulled out a peace of paper and traced her finger over it, making an exact replica of the symbol. It simply transferred from her memory to the paper.

Alicia snorted. "Any that try coming after me may find themselves... deprived of certain pleasures," she said with a cocky smirk as she planted one foot where twin blades a few inches long shot out of the bottom of her boot by the toe. She shifted her weight back onto her heel and with a barely audible click, the blades shot back into her boot.

Merrick shifted, shrugging. He wasn't sure what she was talking about. "I don't know what kind of hunters you're talking about... as for the mark, I've never seen it before, so I don't know for sure," he said carefully, knowing his voice held a strong Irish lilt behind it. He cocked his head as she recreated the marking somehow, simply by touching the paper.

Lorcán paused just outside the office, his hand raised to knock. He caught the words `don't know for sure` before he did knock, his curly dark brown hair hanging over his shoulders.
