Track type: DRY Quote: It had been a while since the last race. The Grand Races had, sadly, been canceled that year because of it. The fear was there that not only could the river not handle so many wet races, with the added worry that the tracks would dry out faster than water could be brought in to soak them properly.
Makoto stood upon the built-up rock that was the royal seating and looked at the gathered cheetahs. "Welcome to the first race of the season. I am sorry that we couldn't hold the Grand Races this year, and thus have no Grand Champion... There was too much worry about your well-being for so many races so close together in such heat, and water increasingly far away as the drought causes the river to drop. But I felt that, for the purpose of morale, a race would be appropriate at this time. Remember to not over-exert yourselves, have fun, and avoid injuries. The track is dry today, as well - Keep that in mind if you favor a sloppy track. We cannot risk bringing water in at the moment."
The king then motioned with a paw. "May the best cheetah win, and good luck to all of you!"
He then picked up a hollowed-out buffalo horn. "Racers, on your marks! Get set..!" Makoto blew on the horn, sounding off for the lithe cats to run. This is, OOCly, our first race! So this is going to be somewhat special! Instead of the STANDARD prize set for a rnadom race, I'll be rehoming an SoA as the FIRST prize! This is Binzari! She will be the grand prize! The winner MAY change her name if they see fit, but they cannot remove her from the pride! She must stay in the Makono-epesi! I think I had her seer rolled when I first got her forever ago... But I can't remember. I DO remember who colored her - She was colored by Ameh! Second prize will be 100k and third prize will be 50k! If the event happens that Dark Star wins, it'll proceed from there down the line of who all comes next... Since it'd be weird for me to win something I'm rehoming XD But what of the fact we don't have 8 cheetahs? We only have FIVE participating! In post 5, each person roll a number 1-5! If we have any ties past first place... Well, you both/all won that prize, and congratulations! Good luck, and may the fastest cheetah win!

She'd missed out on a chance at being a Grand Champion this year, but Dark Star wasn't about to lose anything. The dark cheetah hunkered down, ears back as she waited for the signal. When the king blew the horn, she shoved herself forward, paws flying under her as her body elongated and snapped back with each stride. The heat didn't bother her for the moment, though she knew it should. With her dark coat, she absorbed heat quite well, something that proved an advantage at night. Pity they couldn't hold races at night, then things might prove easier... She couldn't see them for the simple fact of where her focus was, but Dark Star could hear the other racers, their paws pounding the dirt around her. She simply couldn't tell who was beside her and who was behind her, but she could hear SOMEONE beside her.

All of her diligent training was about to pay off. Or so she hoped. Cloud Turbulance crouched with her paws lightly kneeding the ground under her. She would run her best and that was all that mattered. She would love to bring Mavi a win, but knew the lioness would be proud of her no matter what. The cheetahess tensed her back legs as the king brought the horn up. Not yet. Not yet. Go!
Her mind cried to her body which responded with a burst of speed. She tuned as much out as she could. The crowds, the heat, the dust. The other racers as much as she could without crashing or tripping over someone. She couldn't let them distract her from running. Cloud Turbulance stretched herself out to her full length.

Every muscle tensed, coiling up and readying for the moment the horn blew. Then the sound, as soon as the horns noise broke through the air, Aoife's body sprung forward and she shot out with the other racers. This was the first race of the season and she had decided to take this turn, though she did not think Fion minded. Aoife had trained so hard.
Coming Near Horizon. That was her racer name, she remembered as she pushed herself through the track. She stayed in the middle of the pack, seeing no reason to jump ahead so early in the game. Forcing yourself into the front used up too much energy and made it harder to keep the lead, then pushing yourself in at the last minute. But for now, she just had to make sure she didn't trip or step on one of the other racers and end up in a heap of angry cheetahs.

Of course, he was in this to win. Or try to. Storm Cat already had some promising history, but unfortunately was yet to attain the title he wanted the most. And it just wouldn't do to wait for the Grand Races, he'd grow sloppy! Besides, odds were these would be the same cheetah he'd eventually go up against for such a title. It amused him that all his competitors were females. Not because it changed anything, but it was a rather funny coincidence.
Once the race started, he went with his usual strategy, giving enough impulse to put himself ahead early on, but not making an attempt to keep up that pace for long. Cheetah were built for speed, not stamina, and that meant he had to be extra careful with ho he spent his energy. Fortunately, having a bit of experience meant he was reasonably good at that, and it would take a while longer for him to actually feel his body wearing out... hopefully, anyways.
He dedicated some attention to his opponents as he ran, particularly Dark Star, who currently ran beside him. Of course he mostly focused on the finish line, which at the moment still seemed sort of far away...

Lucky Break loved the races. Her life had been hard at times, but since she came here she no longer had to worry. She was safe, she was fed, and she was fairly happy. All she had to do in return was to run, and she loved to run. She stood at the starting point, eyes closed, waiting for the signal. When it came she exploded into action. The dry track was easy on the paws, and she didn't risk losing traction. The dust was bothersome, however, and she did her best not to fall to far back in the crowd. The poor bastards in the back would have to inhale the dust kicked up bu the rest, and if you started coughing you were never going to finish among the top runners.

When she turned a bend, Dark Star got her first look at the cheetah beside her. Not only the only champion in the race, but the only MALE. She'd seen how fast males ran - They often won against females. So for him to be a champion on top of being male, that was a double whammy of any one of the girls needing to beat him.
She could hear her heart pounding in her ears, feel her blood course through her veins. It was a weird sensation, really, to know this was all going on as she detached herself mentally. Her paws and body moved on instinct for the moment, as her toes dug into the dirt while she ran around the bend.

It was harder not to notice the other cheetahs as they closed in around her. Cloud Turbulance gave a snort to clear a bit of dust from her nose and kept running. She nosed ahead by a pawlength. It was a delightful day for a race. Faintly as only an afterthought, she could hear the crowds cheering their favorite cheetah. She resisted a grin.
Her eyes watched a dark blur, a light tan blur, two brown blurs from her peripheral vision. She had to avoid running into them while getting past them. This was going to be a challenge. Briefly she noted one of them was male, but to her they all were competitors.

She heard coughing among the cheetah's further back and smiled slightly. It would be hard for the stragglers to place. But now was not the time to gloat, she needed to focus and keep her head in the game. If she didn't the billowing cloud of dust might get the better of her. She kept her eyes on the track, and tried to keep track of her closest competitors from the corner of her eye. She'd heard of races where cheetah's had collided and removed several runners from the race altogether. She was not going to make any silly mistakes today.

Coming Near Horizon pushed forward a bit, staying in the middle of the pack for now. She kept a careful eye on the cheetah's around her and those ahead of her, noticing Cloud Turbulence begin to nose her way forward. The race was going to be interesting. All the dust being kicked up was making it hard to breath, but she'd been practicing on all sort of tracks, from wet to dry and dusty to humid. She knew how to run through this dust and could spot openings in the dust to take in deep breaths and avoid inhaling a huge amount of dust.
Still, she had to snort and cough every once in a while as a bit of dust filled her nose and tickled it unpleasantly. Out of all the other cheetahs racing, Storm Cat was the most likely to win, already a champion, he was likely in this to win and keep himself in shape for the end of the year championship races. That didn't bother her though, it was the first race and while she wanted to win, it was still good practice to be racing against other cheetahs now. Solo racing could only help her so much. Running against these others was the best way to figure out her strategy and learn how her opponents would move in a race.
Still though, eventually she would need to start pushing forward and trying to pass others to attempt to get in a good position to place in this race.

Now that he had already put himself towards the front, Storm Cat was preoccupied with staying there, without pushing himself too hard... or letting anyone get far ahead.
He was only up against a few cheetah, which meant, at least, there probably wouldn't be too much getting stuck anywhere. Being boxed in was the worst possible position, and Storm Cat always paid attention to his competitors to make sure that didn't happen. So when Cloud Turbulance began to speed up, he didn't rush to keep up, but made sure he was running at least as fast as, if not faster than her. He tried to always be in either the first or second position.

She was running well. Better than she had realized. Cloud Turbulance nearly pulled back as she found herself near the front of the pack. All that training must be paying off. She focused in again to maintain her position and pull in third along side Coming Near Horizon. If only she could be sure Mavi could see her doing so well. No help for it. She could tell her friend how well she did. Without breaking her stride, she gave a wink to CNH.

A few of the others were trying to break away from the group, so Lucky Break increased her speed too. She did not want to be left behind. The playing field usually thinned out somewhat at this stage of a race. Any cheetah that wasn't in good racing shape would start to lag behind, and the strongest ones would increase the pace to try to shake them off more quickly.
She didn't want to be the one running in front and setting the pace since it took more effort to be in the lead. No, it was better to run close behind and then steal the victory from the exhausted cheetah in the lead. Well, in theory at least. For now she was content to let someone else set the pace and pull the crowd of racing cheetah's.

Dark Star glanced at the others, though sparingly, as she thundered up the back stretch. There were five of them up there now, and the rest of the pack was being left further and further behind. They were beginning to reach the end of the race, seeming like they'd been running forever in the heat of the sun. She made a bold choice and move, surging to place herself at the front of the pack of five, trying to distance herself. It wasn't one of the bigger races, but to Dark Star, every win was simply... Awesome. Was she jealous of her sister's rank as a Champion? Yes, yes she was, and she wanted a piece of that pie.

He knew it was a bad thing to let anyone distance themselves from the group by pulling ahead. Aside from himself, of course. And it was also fine when someone fell behind. But that wasn't what Dark Star was doing. Pulling ahead like that could tire a cheetah out, but also simply put them in a more comfortable position if they managed not to slow down. As such, become harder to pass.
The only remedy for this, then, was to pull right ahead with her. While Storm Cat made no attempt to pass her just yet, he made the effort of staying on her heels, at the very least.
