So I was laid off of my 7 year job back in June and was left worrying whatever shall I do for employment?? WELL! I had been toying with the idea of going back to school but had thought I would work PT to help pay for it as well as my bills. Since I was laid off, a government program (Second Career) was willing to fund my tuition and books (thank you Canada!) so I jumped on board immediately.

Unemployment is also paying me a portion of my previous wage for about 10 months. (Wow, thanks AGAIN Canada!)

Everything seems lovely except I was pretty pay check to pay check before all this happened and now I am finding myself stretched pretty thin.
The catch is that with the SC I am only allowed to work 19.5 hours a week as they want me to focus on my schooling. Ok that makes sense since they are paying for it. BUT anything I work with Unemployment they take 50% off what they will pay me for every dollar I work. If I don't get Unemployment, SC will pay me a monthly allowance but they take dollar for dollar off anything I make.

So I will only be able to work a minimum wage (but actually taking home half of that minimum wage) job at less than 20 hours a week.

I am in no way saying this is unfair of the two programs, it's just rather painful for my situation. They make it working is not worth it. Ouch, sorry bills.

That sucks pretty bad and I'm not too much better off myself. After working 4 years at one job I was finally promoted to a supervisor only to have them cut my hours severely because I was making too much, or more like too much for them to want to schedule me. Then I quit that job and moved out of state only to be stuck at a job that couldn't pay all of my bills so I stopped paying my 2 credit cards and the tuition payments. So after a year I quit that job and am now in yet another state with family looking for work. Life hits you hard sometimes and the only thing you can keep doing is.... "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming....."

The winters are always hard for me. During the other seasons I work two jobs so I have a decent income. In the winter the one job I have slows down and I am lucky if I get 16 hours a week.

I just paid almost a grand in car insurance and my bank account looks pathetic.

It sucks that you have a cap on hours you can work while in school. I work two jobs and go to school and am still a straight A student. It would be nice if they could make decisions case by case since some people handle stress and time management better.

Maybe you could so something like mow peoples yards in the summer? I'm not sure if people do that in Canada though, it looks pretty cold up there, but perhaps they have similar one off direct pay jobs?

Hahahaha thanks Deaux, that made me smile. Lawncare is not a bad idea at all if I can get on with a professional company as they pay very well. I am going to cross my fingers that I can get a job somehow related to what I am going to school for but at the end of the day whatever pays the bills right?
