Ugh, she hated studying. Yes, reading was a good thing, but only when it was recreational and not for a grade. Or even if it was for a grade, it was good if it was something she could pick out and enjoy. But no, she had to study for her Trig. test and she didn't really understand anything other than basic math and some geometry. Serenity had always struggle in math unless it had to do with figuring out sale percents and things like that. But when you get numbers into it and shapes and things that just.... what? Her head was killing her.

She sat at a table in the sun by a window of the coffee shop she'd met Aggie at. Now that it wasn't crowded, she'd come to like this place. The coffee was good, it wasn't out in the open, and she could usually study in peace. For the most part this place was pretty quiet. Occasionally a hyper woman came in to see her friends or something, but even that wasn't too bad. It was kind of nice, actually.

In order to keep studying, however, she had to get a new cup of coffee. Looking into her cup it was completely dry and empty. How did that happen? So, she got up, dusting off her uniform from school and wandered towards the counter with a sigh.

Nathan Darrow was not much for coffee, but he was in need of something to keep him going. The last few days had been relative hell for him, considering he had to be out all night and could spend as little time at home as possible. He was sporting a bad injury that he just could not afford to let his dad or his step family see.

If he knew living with someone else taking care of all his bills for him would be so much trouble...

He went up to the counter of the coffee shop, looking tired. He ordered something he didn't care about, not really knowing what the hell they were asking him. Ordering coffee was some kind of mathematically project and he was just not in the right state of mind to deal with it.

He'd drink whatever they handed to him.

He was walking away from the counter, not paying much attention, when he bumped into someone and immediately growled, arm lashing out protectively over his injured side.

"Watch it!"

When she was bumped into, and that growl happened, she looked up from her daze and looked up at the man with wide eyes. She hadn't seen him! Where did he come from? Her brows knit together as she ducked her head and backed away a little. She reached over to get some napkins and looked over him to make sure he wasn't hurt or anything.

At least she didn't get knocked to her rear this time. Unlike when she met Jett. Someone had knocked into her then and she had landed clean on her butt. Either she was clumsy, or light weight. Maybe both.

"I'm so sorry!" she said, her voice reeked apology as she dabbed at him, at any spots that had gotten on him, while ignoring any damp spots on her uniform. It was just clothes, after all! There was always dry cleaning. Some, however, had no time or energy for such things.

"I didn't see you, it's my fault. I was studying and I went for more coffee and...." She just trailed off with a sigh, looking up to the other. Maybe studying in a coffee shop was a bad idea. Just maybe.

Nathan scowled at her. He looked pretty rough, and not just in the sense that he had a thuggish air about him. He was not sleeping and still in a lot of pain, his injury fresh enough to be plaguing him.

But he had been hiding it for long enough at home that he'd reached his breaking point, and just needed to get out. He wanted to power up and go fighting, get some of his pride built back up, but for now he settled on coffee.

Which he didn't like and just put him in a worse mood.

He arched an eyebrow. She was a student, as most were. He probably should have been as well, but he had dropped out a while ago. His father insisted on him going back, but he didn't ever listen to anything Tony said. Unless it was something like 'here's some money'.

Then he was interested.

"Yeah, whatever," he grunted, "stop touching me. You should keep your eyes open." Said the guy that was likely as much at fault. More so, really, since he hadn't been watching either.

The combination of his harsh tone and the scowl made her recoil as though she had been the one that was burned. Truth was, her hands were turning red from where the coffee had spilled on her, but she wasn't going to complain about it. She had burned him a lot worse than anything. Her face remained looking fearful and worried. Fearful he was going to end up screaming at her, like most would in this situation, but worried that she'd seriously burned him. Serenity knew it sounded stupid, but someone could be really hurt by this scenario.

"I'm sorry," she said again, her voice dripping with the emotions on her face. "Let me buy you a drink, or something to eat as an apology for this and.... b-bumping into you." She knew she wasn't the only one at fault here but she didn't want to argue.

If there was something Serenity absolutely hated it was confrontation.

So she looked up at him with her pale eyes half pleading and her little bottom lip wibbled a little. Classic puppy dog pout to hope to convince him.

Nathan stared at her, holding his angered glare as long as he could, pretending puppy dog looks didn't work on him. But, owning a Corgi (or at least living in the same house as one), he couldn't deny their power. He tried to look nonchalant about his change in attitude, shrugging his shoulders as his expression grew a little less severe.

"Well don't buy me another hot drink," he grunted, "I don't think I could survive another dose."

He squinted at her and then moved to sit down heavily in a nearby chair, the chair screeching across the floor as he scooted backwards. He folded his arms over his chest and ignored how painful the burns were, because he felt being injured by a refreshing beverage was beneath him.

But he was sitting down, and watching her expectantly. He wasn't rushing off in a huff and he wasn't asking for her insurance information, so he imagined she could assume she was on safe ground. And if she didn't that was fine, as well.

A look of relief came across her features as he said that and moved to sit down. Nodding, she let her brows knit together and thought a moment. Serenity couldn't just order him something to eat. What if he were allergic to wheat or flour or lettuce or something? She winced at the screeching of his chair and tried her hardest not to rub her ears afterwards.

Of course the girl would think her on safe ground. He wasn't pushing her, or yelling, or even leaving and causing a scene. Sighing, she moved to sit across from him at the table and watched him. "Ah, I'm Serenity, first of all... And what would you like me to order? Do you like sweets? They've got a delicious chocolate cake with oreos on top. They also make amazing chicken melt sandwiches with crispy chips on the side." Serenity could only hope she wasn't annoying him.

This man seemed like he got annoyed very easily, and quite often. She rubbed her hands together, trying to soothe her own burns while focusing on him. This man who's name she didn't know but already caused a great deal of stress.

Nathan opted for a much different route than the usual reactions for someone in this situation. Instead of causing a scene, blaming her or blaming the cafe, he decided to just see how things played out. She was obviously upset about it and he was okay with that, and if he could get some free stuff out of the deal without getting himself put on a black list afterwards, that worked too.

But he wouldn't make it easy.

"Yeah, I'll eat cake. And a sandwich." He watched her and grinned. "That sounds good." Because obviously she was offering to get him one of everything on the menu.

He didn't introduce himself yet, but he might not have been paying attention just yet. He watched her and arched an eyebrow.

"This isn't just how you pick up guys, is it? Suddenly we're on a date and I'm not supposed to be suspicious?"

When the boy didn't introduce himself, Serenity's brows knit together for just a second before nodding to his order. Then, her usually pale face went bright scarlet as he questioned if they were on a date or something. She started stammering, searching for the right word 'no' and then just shook her head furiously. "N-no, no! This is j-just a way to say s-sorry!" Well! This was unexpected. Whining a little, she rubbed a hand over her face and sighed. This wasn't how meetings were supposed to go, much less apologies.

"I'll... I'll be right back," she said, hurrying to the line. She didn't even ask him if he was allergic to anything this time around. She just had to get away to save herself. Save face. Make her look like she wasn't the huge idiot she felt she was. Ugh, way to go, Serenity!

Glancing back with her pale eyes, the red faced, short girl was trying to get a read on him. Almost as if she could tell what he wanted to eat by just looking. Food wasn't like clothes. It wasn't written with what they were wearing or how they were sitting. So, she'd go for things she liked to eat. Maybe he'd like that.

She left him alone for about ten minutes as she waited in line and then ordered. Coming back with the small tray of a chicken melt sandwich and a chocolate cake with a whipped topping and then mocha sprinkles on it. She'd gotten him a soda to go with it all, just a general one that most people liked. Ah, if she got something he didn't like, Serenity didn't know what she'd do.

So, she slid the tray on the table in front of him and sighed. "I'm honestly, very sorry for burning you... and staining your clothes."

Nathan grinned at her reaction. It was just the kind he liked to see the most. She obviously thought he was cute enough to get embarrassed over, though she didn't think she was too upset. Sure, he'd put her on the spot and made her panic, but she got over it quick enough. Points for that.

He watched her go to the queue, tilting his head and taking stock as he had a good view of her. He was a patient sort, if patient meant he was capable of waiting a few seconds before he could mess with someone again.

More than that, though, was questionable.

"Damn, I didn't expect you'd actually get me anything," he said with a laugh, when she got back. "Hell, I half thought you ducked out of line at some point and had split. But hey, thanks, this looks awesome."

"You... didn't expect it?" Her brows knit at that but she shrugged. Oh well. She couldn't fault him for that. This was a very awkward meeting, and their first. "Honestly, it's the least I can do for spilling on you." Her mouth moved into a bit of a smile as she took the seat opposite of him.

Serenity was still wondering what his name was. "I didn't catch your name, I'm afraid," she said after a moment, biting on her lip. Hopefully he'd give it this time.

Nathan grinned. He supposed he could throw her a bone at this point, since she had got him food and hadn't dropped it on him, as she said, which was always a plus. He nodded, grinning at her coolly.

"My name is Nathan. Nate. People only call me Nathan when they're mad at me."

He imagined he would be hearing her call him that a lot, if she was anything like most of the other people he met. He had some good friends but they still gave him that attitude when he was messing with them. He was at his leisure now, though.

A nice Nate was a fed Nate.

"Nate... That's a very easy to remember name. Pleased to meet you, even if the circumstances weren't very favorable at first. I'm glad I could help turn it around." She was all smiles now, happy she was able to get him grinning at her. He was quite charming when he grinned. "If you need your clothes dry cleaned, I'll be happy to pay for it. I know some good dry cleaners who can get out any stain on any kind of cloth. Or so I like to believe. I'm usually spilling something on me."

And now she made herself sound very clumsy. Lovely. Smooth move, Serenity. Sighing, she blew a bit of her hair out of her face before clearing her throat. "...When I'm studying, anyway.."

"I bet," Nathan laughed and then nodded his head. He was not in a hurry, but he imagined she was probably going to get tired of his company. He was not sure what to say, anyway. He was not actually good at conversations: usually he had something to distract him from having to really talk to someone. Like the fact that he had just punched someone, or stole something, or did something else unsavory.

He ate his sandwich leisurely and even scooted his plate toward her, where half of the sandwich remained.

He pretended he did not do anything, though.

"So what is it that you're studying, that is making you constantly spill things on yourself? Gotta be something shocking or naughty, or something like that, eh?" It was probably boring, but he could pretend for now.

When the plate was scooted her way in that nonchalant way Nate had about him, Serenity just reached over and didn't make a big deal out of it. She picked up the second half of the sandwich and started eating it with a happy little noise. It was one of her favorite things here, after all.

"I wish, no. I just get into a ..mn... trance, I suppose," she said, licking her lips after a few bites. "So I don't pay attention if my cup is tipping or over flowing. I'm not very scatterbrained, but ... I suppose when it comes to my grades I'm very tunnel minded." Was that the right word for it? Ah, well. She shrugged and just continued to nibble the sandwich. "Chemistry, trig.. Trying to get ready for the final exams of the year in May so I can graduate with a high GPA."

She paused again and shrugged. "What about you? Are... you in school?" She couldn't put an age on him. People now-a-days never looked their real ages.
