Boom... The Static comes in slow
You can feel it grow
Our stream of conscience flows
Under the streets below

The rivers made of sound
Still running underground
Runs like a silent flood
We run as thick as blood

Can you hear it rise
Up from the ground
Can’t drown it out
Can you hear it now

This is the sound of a heartbeat

_______________// FILE: OHM

Om, Ohm or Aum (also About this sound Auṃ (help·info), written universally as ॐ, in Devanāgari as ओ३म् or ओम् in Sanskrit known as praṇava प्रणव (lit. "to sound out loudly"), Omkara, or Auṃkāra (also as Aumkāra) ओंकार (lit. "Auṃ form/syllable"), is a sacred or mystical syllable of Hindu origin but is of importance to other Dharmic traditions as well, namely Buddhism and Jainism.

Om is pronounced as ओ३म् where ३ is Pluti, (indicating a length of three morae) (long or over-long nasalized close-mid back rounded vowel, [õːː]), like OOOM, दीर्घ O, though there are other enunciations adhered to in received traditions. It is placed at the beginning of most Hindu texts as a sacred incantation to be intoned at the beginning and end of a reading of the Vedas or prior to any prayer or mantra. It is used at the end of the invocation to the god being sacrificed to (anuvakya) as an invitation to and for that God to partake of the sacrifice.. The Māndukya Upanishad is entirely devoted to the explanation of the syllable. The syllable consists of three phonemes, a Vaishvanara,[1] u Hiranyagarbha and m Iswara, which symbolize the beginning, duration, and dissolution of the universe and the associated gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, respectively.[2] The name Omkara is taken as a name of God in the Hindu revivalist Arya Samaj and can be translated as "I Am Existence"[citation needed].

_______________// FILE: OHM/NAME, PHONOLOGY, REPRESENTATION

The Sanskrit name for the syllable is, from a root nu "to shout, sound", verbal pra-nu- being attested as "to make a humming or droning sound" in the Brahmanas, and taking the specific meaning of "to utter the syllable om" in the Chāndogya Upanishad and the Shrauta Sutras. More rarely used terms are akṣara (lit. symbol, character) or ekākṣara (lit. one symbol, character), and in later times omkāra becomes prevalent.

Phonetically, the syllable is /aum/, which is regularly monophthongized to [õː] in Sanskrit phonology. It is sometimes also written with pluti, as o3m (ओ३म्), notably by Arya Samaj. When occurring within a Sanskrit utterance, the syllable is subject to the normal rules of sandhi in Sanskrit grammar, however with the additional peculiarity that after preceding a or ā, the au of aum does not form vriddhi (au) but guna (o) per Pāṇini 6.1.95 (i.e. 'om').

The om symbol is a ligature of Devanagari ओ+ँ (oṃ, encoded in Unicode at U+0950 ॐ, the Tibetan script variant ༀ at U+0F00, and the Chinese version 唵 at U+5535 or 吽 at U+543D).

_______________// FILE: OHM/IN HINDUISM

The syllable om is first described as all-encompassing mystical entity in the Upanishads. Today, in all Hindu art and all over India and Nepal, 'om' can be seen virtually everywhere, a common sign for Hinduism and its philosophy and theology. Hindus believe that as creation began, the divine, all-encompassing consciousness took the form of the first and original vibration manifesting as sound "OM".[3] Before creation began it was "Shunyākāsha", the emptiness or the void. Shunyākāsha, meaning literally "no sky", is more than nothingness, because everything then existed in a latent state of potentiality. The vibration of "OM" symbolizes the manifestation of God in form ("sāguna brahman"). "OM" is the reflection of the absolute reality, it is said to be "Adi Anadi", without beginning or the end and embracing all that exists.[3] The mantra "OM" is the name of God, the vibration of the Supreme. When taken letter by letter, A-U-M represents the divine energy (Shakti) united in its three elementary aspects: Bhrahma Shakti (creation), Vishnu Shakti (preservation) and Shiva Shakti (liberation, and/or destruction).[3]

_______________// FILE: OHM/EARLY VIDANTIC LITERATURE

The syllable is mentioned in all the Upanishads, specially elaborated upon in the Taittiriya, Chāndogya and Māndukya Upanishad set forth as the object of profound religious meditation, the highest spiritual efficacy being attributed not only to the whole word but also to the three sounds a (a-kāra), u (u-kāra), m (ma-kāra), of which it consists. A-kara means form or shape like earth, trees, or any other object. U-kāra means formless or shapeless like water, air or fire. Ma-kāra means neither shape nor shapeless (but still exists) like the dark energy content of the Universe. When we combine all three syllables we get AUM which is a combination of A-kāra, U-kāra, and Ma-kāra.[4]

The Katha Upanishad states:

"The goal, which all Vedas declare, which all austerities aim at, and which humans desire when they live a life of conscience, I will tell you briefly it is aum"
"The one syllable [evākṣara, viz. aum] is indeed Brahman. This one syllable is the highest. Whosoever knows this one syllable obtains all that he desires.
"This is the best support; this is the highest support. Whosoever knows this support is adored in the world of Brahma." (1.2.15-17)[5]

The Chāndogya Upanishad (1.1.1-1) states:

om ity-etad akṣaram udgītham upāsīta / aum iti hy udgāyati / tasyopavyākhyānam
"The udgi:tā ["the chanting", that is, the syllable om] is the best of all essences, the highest, deserving the highest place, the eighth."

The Bhagavad Gi:tā (8.13) states that:

Uttering the monosyllable Aum, the eternal world of Brahman, One who departs leaving the body (at death), he attains the Supreme Goal (i.e., he reaches God).

In Bhagavad Gi:tā (9.17): Lord Krishna says to Arjuna - "I am the father of this universe, the mother, the support and the grandsire. I am the object of knowledge, the purifier and the syllable Oḿ. I am also the Ṛig, the Sāma and the Yajur Vedas."

The Bhagvad Gi:tā (17.23) has:

om tatsatiti nirdesho brahmanstrividhah samratah
"OM, tat and sat has been declared as the triple appellation of Brahman, who is Truth, Consciousness and Bliss."

In the following sūtra it emphasizes, "The repetition of Om should be made with an understanding of its meaning".[6]

In the book Om Chanting and Meditation Amit Ray states:

Om is not just a sound or vibration. It is not just a symbol. It is the entire cosmos, whatever we can see, touch, hear and feel. Moreover, it is all that is within our perception and all that is beyond our perception. It is the core of our very existence. If you think of Om only as a sound, a technique or a symbol of the Divine, you will miss it altogether. ..... Om is the mysterious cosmic energy that is the substratum of all the things and all the beings of the entire universe. It is an eternal song of the Divine. It is continuously resounding in silence on the background of everything that exists. [7]

_______________// FILE: OHM/PURANIC HINDUISM

The Om Parvat in Pithoragarh district. Its snow deposit is said to resemble the Om symbol.
God Ganesha is sometimes identified with the Om

In Purānic Hinduism, Om is the mystic name for the Hindu Trimurti, and represents the union of the three gods, viz. a for Brahma, u for Vishnu and m for Mahadev which is another name of Shiva. The three sounds also symbolize the three Vedas (Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda).

According to Hindu philosophy (see Māndukya Upanishad), the letter A represents creation, when all existence issued forth from Brahma's golden nucleus; the letter U refers to Vishnu the God of the middle who preserves this world by balancing Brahma on a lotus above himself, and the letter M symbolizes the final part of the cycle of existence, when Vishnu falls asleep and Shiva has to breathe in so that all existing things have to disintegrate and are reduced to their essence to him. More broadly, Om is said to be the primordial sound that was present at the creation of the universe. It is said to be the original sound that contains all other sounds, all words, all languages and all mantras.

_______________// FILE: OHM/ADVAITA

Aum symbol on a temple elephant's forehead

In Advaita philosophy it is frequently used to represent three subsumed into one, a triune, a common theme in Hinduism. It implies that our current existence is mithyā and maya, "falsehood", that in order to know the full truth we must comprehend beyond the body and intellect the true nature of infinity. Essentially, upon moksha (mukti, samādhi) one is able not only to see or know existence for what it is, but to become it. When one gains true knowledge, there is no split between knower and known: one becomes knowledge/consciousness itself. In essence, Om is the signifier of the ultimate truth that all is one.

_______________// FILE: OHM/IN PROPER NAMES

When Om is a part of a place name (for example Omkāreshwar), or is used as a man's name, it is spelled phonetically using ordinary letters of whatever Indian alphabet is used in the area. The adherents of Arya Samaj always use the ordinary letters अ(Ah), ऊ(ooh) and म(ma) to write Om.

_______________// FILE: OHM/IN JAINISM

In Jainism, Om is regarded to be a condensed form of reference to the Pañca-Parameṣṭhi, by their initials A+A+A+U+M (o3m). The Dravyasamgraha quotes a Prakrit line:

ओम एकाक्षर पञ्चपरमेष्ठिनामादिपम् तत्कथमिति चेत "अरिहंता असरीरा आयरिया तह उवज्झाया मुणियां"
oma ekākṣara pañca-parameṣṭhi-nāmā-dipam tatkabhamiti ceta "arihatā asarīrā āyariyā taha uvajjhāyā muṇiyā"
"Om" is one syllable made from the initials of the five parameshthis. It has been said: "Arihant, Ashiri, Acharya, Upajjhaya, Muni" .

Thus, ओं नमः (oṃ namaḥ) is a short form of the Navkar Mantra.

_______________// FILE: OHM/IN BUDDHISM

Buddhists place om at the beginning of their Vidya-Sadaksari or mystical formulary in six syllables (viz., om mani padme hum) as well as most other mantras and dhāranis. As a seed syllable (bija mantra), it is also considered holy in Esoteric Buddhism.

The syllable is often written with the Chinese character 唵 (pinyin ǎn) or 嗡 (pinyin wēng) in Buddhist texts of East Asian provenience.

A key distinction should be made here between Buddhism as it arose in Nepal and Buddhism after the migration of the teachings to Tibet under the guidance of Padmasambhava. In its original form, Buddhism in Nepal was characterized mainly by types of mindfulness meditation and did not involve the chanting of Om or of mantras.[8] Buddhism in Tibet after the merger with Bon Shamanism, and heavy Hindu influence, is now characterized by the AH bija and can be roughly translated as representing pure spirit (the fifth element in the Tibetan system).

Paying close attention to the calligraphic representation, the Vedic or Indian OM is what most Westerners are used to and the Tibetan script OM is less widespread in popular culture.[9] Even Tibetan handicrafts made in India tend to use the Nepali OM for recognizability.

_______________// FILE: OHM/"ONKAR" IN SIKHISM

Ik Onkar (One God) - Ik Onkar (Modern Punjabi ਇੱਕ ਓਅੰਕਾਰ, Ikk Oankar, iconically ੴ in the Gurmukhi script — a combination of the numeral one ੧ and the letter ūṛā ੳ with the vowel marker hōṛā — and sometimes written in full as ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ,[10] ikonkar) is the statement of the uniqueness of God in Sikhism,[11] and is commonly translated simply as "one God".[12] Within the phrase, the figure ੧, pronounced ik, is the numeral one, and the word onkar is a figurative reference to God: the Hindu concept of om being combined with ਕਾਰ, kar, to mean "creator of om"[13] — the word ਕਾਰ appearing several times in the Guru Granth Sahib, and meaning "create", "work", or "action".[14] Thus, although om is referenced, Sikhism uses it only to starkly emphasize its monotheism without subscribing to its philosophy in and of itself.[13]

_______________// FILE: RESONANCE

In physics, resonance is the tendency of a system to oscillate at a greater amplitude at some frequencies than at others. These are known as the system's resonance frequencies (or, erroneously[3], resonant frequencies). At these frequencies, even small periodic driving forces can produce large amplitude oscillations, because the system stores vibrational energy.

Resonance occurs when a system is able to store and easily transfer energy between two or more different storage modes (such as kinetic energy and potential energy in the case of a pendulum). However, there are some losses from cycle to cycle, called damping. When damping is small, the resonance frequency is approximately equal to the natural frequency of the system, which is a frequency of unforced vibrations. Some systems have multiple, distinct, resonance frequencies.

Resonance phenomena occur with all types of vibrations or waves: there is mechanical resonance, acoustic resonance, electromagnetic resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron spin resonance (ESR) and resonance of quantum wave functions. Resonant systems can be used to generate vibrations at a specific frequency (e.g. musical instruments), or pick out specific frequencies from a complex vibration containing many frequencies (e.g. filters).

Resonance was recognized by Galileo Galilei with his investigations of pendulums and musical strings beginning in 1602.[4][5]

_______________// FILE: RESONANCE/EXAMPLES

Pushing a person in a swing is a common example of resonance. The loaded swing, a pendulum, has a natural frequency of oscillation, its resonance frequency, and resists being pushed at a faster or slower rate.

One familiar example is a playground swing, which acts as a pendulum. Pushing a person in a swing in time with the natural interval of the swing (its resonance frequency) will make the swing go higher and higher (maximum amplitude), while attempts to push the swing at a faster or slower tempo will result in smaller arcs. This is because the energy the swing absorbs is maximized when the pushes are 'in phase' with the swing's oscillations, while some of the swing's energy is actually extracted by the opposing force of the pushes when they are not.

Resonance occurs widely in nature, and is exploited in many man-made devices. It is the mechanism by which virtually all sinusoidal waves and vibrations are generated. Many sounds we hear, such as when hard objects of metal, glass, or wood are struck, are caused by brief resonant vibrations in the object. Light and other short wavelength electromagnetic radiation is produced by resonance on an atomic scale, such as electrons in atoms. Other examples are:

_______________// FILE: SONIC & ULTRASONIC WEAPONS

Sonic and ultrasonic weapons (USW) are weapons of various types that use sound to injure, incapacitate, or kill an opponent. Some sonic weapons are currently in limited use or in research and development by military and police forces. Others exist only in the realm of science fiction. Some of these weapons have been described as sonic bullets, sonic grenades, sonic mines, or sonic cannons. Some make a focused beam of sound or ultrasound; some make an area field of sound. Although many real sonic and ultrasonic weapons are described as "non-lethal", they can still kill under certain conditions.[citation needed]

_______________// FILE: ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound is a cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. Ultrasound is thus not separated from "normal" (audible) sound based on differences in physical properties, only the fact that humans cannot hear it. Although this limit varies from person to person, it is approximately 20 kilohertz (20,000 hertz) in healthy, young adults. The production of ultrasound is used in many different fields, typically to penetrate a medium and measure the reflection signature or supply focused energy. The reflection signature can reveal details about the inner structure of the medium, a property also used by animals such as bats for hunting. The most well known application of ultrasound is its use in sonography to produce pictures of fetuses in the human womb. There are a vast number of other applications as well.[1]

_______________// FILE: ULTRASOUND/ABILITY TO HEAR ULTRASOUND

The upper frequency limit in humans (approximately 20 kHz) is due to limitations of the middle ear, which acts as a low-pass filter. Ultrasonic hearing can occur if ultrasound is fed directly into the skull bone and reaches the cochlea through bone conduction without passing through the middle ear.[2]

It is a fact in psychoacoustics that children can hear some high-pitched sounds that older adults cannot hear, because in humans the upper limit pitch of hearing tends to become lower with age.[3] A cell phone company has used this to create ring signals supposedly only able to be heard by younger humans;[4] but many older people can hear it, which may be due to the considerable variation of age-related deterioration in the upper hearing threshold.

Many animals—such as dogs, cats, dolphins, bats, and mice—have an upper frequency limit that is higher than that of the human ear and thus can hear ultrasound. This is why a dog whistle can be heard by a dog.

See also The Mosquito (an electronic device used to deter loitering by young people).

_______________// FILE: PSYCHOACOUSTICS

Psychoacoustics is the scientific study of sound perception. More specifically, it is the branch of science studying the psychological and physiological responses associated with sound (including speech and music). It can be further categorized as a branch of psychophysics.

_______________// FILE: PSYCHOACOUSTICS/BACKGROUND

Hearing is not a purely mechanical phenomenon of wave propagation, but is also a sensory and perceptual event; in other words, when a person hears something, that something arrives at the ear as a mechanical sound wave traveling through the air, but within the ear it is transformed into neural action potentials. These nerve pulses then travel to the brain where they are perceived. Hence, in many problems in acoustics, such as for audio processing, it is advantageous to take into account not just the mechanics of the environment, but also the fact that both the ear and the brain are involved in a person’s listening experience.

The inner ear, for example, does significant signal processing in converting sound waveforms into neural stimuli, so certain differences between waveforms may be imperceptible.[1] Data compression techniques, such as MP3, make use of this fact.[2] In addition, the ear has a nonlinear response to sounds of different intensity levels, this nonlinear response is called loudness. Telephone networks and audio noise reduction systems make use of this fact by nonlinearly compressing data samples before transmission, and then expanding them for playback.[3] Another effect of the ear's nonlinear response is that sounds that are close in frequency produce phantom beat notes, or intermodulation distortion products.[4]

_______________// FILE: PSYCHOACOUSTICS/LIMITS OF PERCEPTION

An equal-loudness contour. Note peak sensitivity between 2khz and 4khz, the frequency around which the human voice centers

The human ear can nominally hear sounds in the range 20 Hz (0.02 kHz) to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). The upper limit tends to decrease with age; most adults are unable to hear above 16 kHz. The lowest frequency that has been identified as a musical tone is 12 Hz under ideal laboratory conditions.[5] Tones between 4 and 16 Hz can be perceived via the body's sense of touch.

Frequency resolution of the ear is 3.6 Hz within the octave of 1,000–2,000 Hz. That is, changes in pitch larger than 3.6 Hz can be perceived in a clinical setting.[5] However, even smaller pitch differences can be perceived through other means. For example, the interference of two pitches can often be heard as a (low-)frequency difference pitch. This effect of phase variance upon the resultant sound is known as beating.

The semitone scale used in Western musical notation is not a linear frequency scale but logarithmic. Other scales have been derived directly from experiments on human hearing perception, such as the mel scale and Bark scale (these are used in studying perception, but not usually in musical composition), and these are approximately logarithmic in frequency at the high-frequency end, but nearly linear at the low-frequency end.

The intensity range of audible sounds is enormous. Our ear drums are sensitive to variations in the sound pressure, and can detect pressure changes from as small as a few micropascals to greater than 1 bar. For this reason, sound pressure level is also measured logarithmically, with all pressures referenced to 20 µPa (or 1.97385×10−10 atm). The lower limit of audibility is therefore defined as 0 dB, but the upper limit is not as clearly defined. The upper limit is more a question of the limit where the ear will be physically harmed or with the potential to cause noise-induced hearing loss.

A more rigorous exploration of the lower limits of audibility determines that the minimum threshold at which a sound can be heard is frequency dependent. By measuring this minimum intensity for testing tones of various frequencies, a frequency dependent absolute threshold of hearing (ATH) curve may be derived. Typically, the ear shows a peak of sensitivity (i.e., its lowest ATH) between 1 kHz and 5 kHz, though the threshold changes with age, with older ears showing decreased sensitivity above 2 kHz.[6]

The ATH is the lowest of the equal-loudness contours. Equal-loudness contours indicate the sound pressure level (dB), over the range of audible frequencies, which are perceived as being of equal loudness. Equal-loudness contours were first measured by Fletcher and Munson at Bell Labs in 1933 using pure tones reproduced via headphones, and the data they collected are called Fletcher-Munson curves. Because subjective loudness was difficult to measure, the Fletcher-Munson curves were averaged over many subjects.

Robinson and Dadson refined the process in 1956 to obtain a new set of equal-loudness curves for a frontal sound source measured in an anechoic chamber. The Robinson-Dadson curves were standardized as ISO 226 in 1986. In 2003, ISO 226 was revised as equal-loudness contour using data collected from 12 international studies.

_______________// FILE: ACOUSTICS

Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibration, sound, ultrasound and infrasound. A scientist who works in the field of acoustics is an acoustician while someone working in the field of acoustics technology may be called an acoustical engineer. The application of acoustics can be seen in almost all aspects of modern society with the most obvious being the audio and noise control industries.

Hearing is one of the most crucial means of survival in the animal world, and speech is one of the most distinctive characteristics of human development and culture. So it is no surprise that the science of acoustics spreads across so many facets of our society—music, medicine, architecture, industrial production, warfare and more. Art, craft, science and technology have provoked one another to advance the whole, as in many other fields of knowledge. Robert Bruce Lindsay's 'Wheel of Acoustics' is a well accepted overview of the various fields in acoustics.[1]

The word "acoustic" is derived from the Greek word ακουστικός (akoustikos), meaning "of or for hearing, ready to hear"[2] and that from ἀκουστός (akoustos), "heard, audible",[3] which in turn derives from the verb ἀκούω (akouo), "I hear".[4]

The Latin synonym is "sonic", after which the term sonics used to be a synonym for acoustics[5] and later a branch of acoustics.[6] Frequencies above and below the audible range are called "ultrasonic" and "infrasonic", respectively.

_______________// FILE: ANDALITE DEFINITION

The Andalites ( /ˈændəlaɪt/) are a fictional alien race of grazers in the Scholastic book series (and television adaptation of the same name) Animorphs.

_______________// FILE: BIOLOGY

The Andalites are fictional aliens from the book series and TV series Animorphs. Andalites resemble centaurs of Greek mythology, with a lower body similar to a horse and a torso similar to a human. The two arms on their upper bodies are relatively weak by human standards, and end with seven-fingered hands. Andalites are incredibly agile on their four hooved legs. Their entire bodies are covered in fur, the males blue and tan in color while the females have been depicted as being purple.

The head of an Andalite has a pair of almond-shaped eyes, as well as a second pair of "stalk-eyes" mounted on two thick stalks that rise from the top of their heads, giving them a 360-degree range of vision. The main eyes are glittery green or gold in color. Their sense of sight is similar to that of humans, with the stalk eyes capable of seeing a slightly wider spectrum of light wavelengths.

A notable facial feature is the lack of a mouth. Andalites feed by crushing grass beneath their hooves, absorbing the nutrients from the plants, and communicate by means of thought-speech, a kind of telepathy. In the place where a human nose would be located, Andalites possess three vertical slits, allowing them to breathe. They have two hearts, giving them physical speed and endurance beyond what a human can achieve. An Andalite's normal body temperature (in Fahrenheit) is 91.3 degrees.
Andalites also possess an organ in the back of their head called the Tria gland. The Tria gland keeps disease organisms away from the rest of the body. More specifically, the Tria gland is in the back of the head, even with the bottom of the ears, in the dead center. Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill needed his removed due to inflammation in book #29, The Sickness.

Andalites evolved as prey animals, but possess a formidable defense in the form of the single, scythe-shaped blade at the end of their long tails. The female tail blade is noticeably smaller than that of the male, and more similar to a scalpel than a blade. The bladed tail is long enough to reach well in front of the Andalite, allowing them to strike quickly and deeply at an opponent. A common Andalite battle technique is to turn the blade flat against their target at the last possible instant, delivering a blow that renders the opponent unconscious rather than fatally cutting them.

The Andalite tail is also an important part of their culture, and is frequently referenced in poetry and rituals. For example, the word shorm comes from the Andalite word for 'tail-blade', and is used to describe a fellow Andalite who could be trusted to place his tail-blade at one's own throat without feeling threatened; essentially, a best friend. Andalites can also read thoughts. They can also receive thoughts as long you think it at them.

_______________// FILE: BEHAVIOUR & EVOLUTION

Andalites are grazers, but are capable of accidentally absorbing small animals, such as worms and snails when stepped on. They were originally herd animals, and are accustomed to living on open plains. Because of this, claustrophobia is a deeply ingrained trait in Andalites, and they loathe enclosed spaces.

Due to evolution they lost the little power of fuller(?) abilities they had, It is also noted that Andalites are a watchful species and can go for days without sleeping. When they do sleep it is usually standing up and with one stalk eye open.

At some point in their development, the Andalites began a transition away from being herd animals, and formed small groups, similar to families. Soon, families joined together, forming small communities. As society advanced, the communities grew closer and closer in proximity until they had developed dense urban environments. Eventually, the Andalites moved away from this pattern of society, favoring separation of the communities into small, family based 'scoops.' This has resulted in a sort of agricultural, farmer society despite the advanced technology the Andalites have developed, including faster-than-light travel and the ability to morph. The Andalite homeworld does maintain three spaceports that retain the urban model of development.

_______________// FILE: HOMEWORLD

The Andalite homeworld is vaguely described in various books in the Animorphs series. The number of suns in the Andalite star system is never specified, but the stars are always referred to in the plural sense. On one occasion, Ax said that the Andalite homeworld once orbited two different stars millions of years in the past before one of them went nova, the shock wave having unspecified results on the planet's orbit. The Andalite homeworld has four moons, at least two of which are visible from the planet's surface at any given time. The planet's sky is colored red and gold. In The Predator, Ax specifies that the Andalite homeworld is 82 light-years away from Earth.

While the Andalite homeworld does not boast the sheer number and variety of organisms that Earth does, there are many interesting plant and animal species. The Kafit bird, for example, is one of only three bird species indigenous to the Andalite homeworld. It is a predatory bird, with three pairs of wings and a long, sharp beak. It uses its spear-like beak and speed to spear its prey. Although this behavior is frowned upon, Andalite arisths often morph into Kafit birds for amusement.

Andalite plant life is quite remarkable with grasses in shades of green, blue, and even red. Some species of old growth tree on the planet appear to have a vague intelligence and can use very limited telepathy, though this is usually limited to acknowledgment of another's presence and a return and recognition of basic emotions; it is extremely rare and difficult for a tree on the Andalite homeworld to form even a single thought-speech word, as it purportedly can take days for the few who can. An Andalite will form a special bond with a certain tree, which becomes the Andalite's Garibah ('Guide Tree').

_______________// FILE: TECHNOLOGY

The Andalites are very scientifically oriented race, and boast a vast knowledge of the universe and highly advanced technology. A notable development is Zero-Space technology, which allows Andalite vessels equipped with "Z-space" engines to enter the region of Zero or Z-space, described as an entirely blank, void, white space, where real-space limitations on faster-than-light travel do not exist. Z-space transponder technology also takes advantage of this 'dimension' by shortening the travel time of messages through space, an advanced form of radio communication.

Andalite starship technology has developed a wide variety of vessels, including their standard Tail-fighter starfighter, a small, elongated craft equipped with twin, stubby wings tipped by engines, and a Shredder particle weapon slung over the top of the crew cabin on the end of an extension fashioned to mimic the raised Andalite tail. The vast Dome Ships are the primary battleships of the Andalite space fleet, transporting starfighters and Andalite warriors to war zones. The ship is shaped like a long rod, with engine pods at one end, and a massive, clear dome covering a circular platform centered on the other end. This 'dome' portion sustains an entire ecosphere in its interior, complete with atmosphere, grass, and water, designed to sustain Andalites while they travel through space. Andalites describe it as "taking a piece of their world with them wherever they go", much to the chagrin of the Yeerk Empire. The ship's hangar bays can host a full complement of fighters, and a single Dome Ship usually arrives at a battle with an occasional deployment of a second, and rarely accompanied by a third. The Dome Ship shredders are rumored to be powerful enough to destroy a moon the size of Earth's. Dome Ships are slow to maneuver, and the dome portion must be temporarily de-coupled from the rest of the ship in order for all its shredders to be turned towards a target, and even then the ship is slow to turn its guns onto its targets. This weakness was exploited by Visser Three, enabling his Blade Ship to destroy the Dome Ship GalaxyTree in Earth orbit.

One of the more recently developed and most advanced Andalite technologies is their morphing technology. This allows Andalites to transform into any being whose DNA pattern can be absorbed through touch, for up to two hours at a time. This provides an effective weapon against the Yeerks, allowing them to transform into dangerous creatures in battle, and spy and infiltrate Yeerk facilities and organizations. Surpassing the two-hour time limit carries the penalty of leaving the Andalite trapped in the morph permanently, his own DNA lost. This is called a becoming a nothlit. Tobias became a nothlit in the first book, The Invasion. The morphing technology is closely guarded, and no non-Andalite had ever possessed the ability besides Visser Three (who had an Andalite host body) and the five human Animorphs, who were given the technology by Prince Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul using an Escafil device. Later on, this technology is stolen from the Animorphs by the Yeerks, after the Animorphs increase their numbers substantially, and while they attempt to recruit still more potentials.

Fission and fusion is not apparently used by Andalites extensively, since it has been stated that they use it in children's toys.

_______________// FILE: INTERSPECIES RELATIONS

Andalites have varied relations with many different species outside their planet. They are generally known to be a helpful, friendly race, spreading enlightenment and aid wherever possible. However, an example that mars their reputation and simultaneously jades many Andalites to their own culture as well as that of outside species, is Seerow's Kindness, named after Prince Seerow, one of the first Andalites to be stationed on the homeworld of a newly discovered species, the Yeerks.

In their natural state, the Yeerks are blind, defenseless slugs that are, however, capable of entering the brains of other species, interfacing with their host's mind, and then controlling the creature. When the Andalites arrived, the Yeerks had already taken a clumsy, weak race known as the Gedds as their hosts. Despite this, most of them never became aware of anything beyond the small, natural pools of their homeworld. Seerow felt sorry for the Yeerks, and taught them the technology they needed to travel beyond their world, and showed them the stars. He built them portable Kandronas, devices mimicking the rays of the Yeerk sun, allowing them to leave the confines of their world.

In return for Seerow's aid, the Yeerks betrayed the Andalites, attacking their outpost and slaughtering the minimal guarding force (who had been instructed by Seerow not to fire on any Gedds), and stole the Andalite fighters that were on the ground, escaping into space, but not before circling around to the far side of the planet to bring their fellow Yeerks aboard. Then, the Andalite ships, loaded with numerous pools full of Yeerks, left the homeworld, aiming to conquer the galaxy with the technology that Seerow had given them.

Ever since, the Andalites have fought against the Yeerks, trying to prevent them from taking over more innocent worlds. The Yeerks have already taken over numerous species, including the cannibalistic Taxxons, who voluntarily submitted to the Yeerks, and their ironically herbivorous shock-troops, the Hork-Bajir. These species were, however, slow to reproduce and insufficient for the massive number of Yeerks that needed hosts. There have also been many failures like the Hawjawbrans, who couldn't be infested because their brain is spread out throughout their body; the Yeerk's eventual goal was to fully infest Class 4 and Class 5 races (Andalites and humans, respectively), which would give them the troops they needed to take over more worlds and expand their empire. Their ultimate prize would be the Andalites, for whom the Yeerks had developed a deep hatred, despite the species' initial kindness towards them.

The Andalites are also enemies of the Kelbrid. The two species have a strict treaty, whereby neither can enter the other's space; the exact history of their relations is mysterious, however, especially considering neither side actually knows anything about the other, including what they look like.

_______________// FILE: CULTURE & GOVERNMENT

The Andalite government, headed by the Electorate, functions on pillars of honor, respect, pride in culture as well as self. However, these noble characteristics are accompanied by others that seem surprisingly backwards in the eyes of species they consider evolutionarily inferior: arrogance, inflexibility, sexism, and an atrocious attitude towards the disabled, whom they label vecols and treat as outcasts.

Although males and females have a higher societal equality in Andalite society than they did in Earth's past, gender roles are nevertheless strictly defined, with males strongly encouraged to enter the Andalite military, while the females remain in civilian, vocational roles, specializing themselves in arts and pure sciences. Andalite recreation includes a sport called driftball, as well as tail-fighting for sport.

Working down the chain of command from the Electorate are the Princes, the basic, personal leadership role. Every warrior must have a prince, and is expected to report only to that one Prince. A Prince will have one or more arisths, or cadets, under him. According to Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill, in Andalite culture, every individual is supposed to be subordinate to another, with the Electorate in turn being chosen by the people. Even military matters are controlled by the public, as warriors can present a "challenge" to any action a superior wishes to make, which would result in a trial where the people decide the outcome. However, during the war with the Yeerks, the Electorate became increasingly deaf and blind to the war, and independent Princes began to take direct control of the entire war effort. Prince Alloran-Semitur-Corass attempted to wipe out the entire Hork-Bajir race in order to eliminate the Yeerk's main troops with a quantum virus, and the Andalite military had been ready to obliterate the human population through a 'Quarantine' that would have wiped out almost the entire human population in order to starve the Yeerk empire of hosts.

The Andalite civilian government is rarely referred to, if it even exists; it is known that the military is run by the Andalite High Command, the members of whom are called "Great Leaders." A "Council" is also mentioned, but it is unclear if this is military or not.

The Andalite culture is very self-centered on the fact that Andalite themselves are the best race in the universe because of their technologies. Due to the law of Seerow's kindness, Andalites are not allowed to give other species their technologies. They are also very proud and will condemn anyone (even their own people) if any disgraced acts are committed. The best known taboo status Andalite was war prince Alloran-Semitur-Corrass during his infestation by Visser Three. Alloran was the only Andalite-controller in existence and deemed him the title of "The Abomination".

It must be noted that the vast majority of the Andalites encountered over the course of the series are from the military, and once the war ends, Marco notes that Andalite civilian tourists are much less arrogant and irritable than their military counterparts.

_______________// FILE: LANGUAGE

_______________// FILE: LANGUAGE/NAMING

Andalite names are three words long and hyphenated; for example, Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul. The first name is the given name. When Ax gives his parents' names in The Alien, it is revealed that his father's second name is "Sirinial", the same as Elfangor's, while his mother's second name is "Esgarrouth", Ax's own second name; this implies that the second name is a sort of family name. The purpose of the third name is unknown.

It is notable that many Andalites seem to share names, even when they are not related; for example, an Andalite not related to Ax had the third name "Esgarrouth", and so forth. It is possible that names are also not restricted by gender, as "Estrid" as been seen as the first name of a female Andalite and as the second name of a male.

"Ax" is a shortened form of the name Aximili; this shortening is not Andalite in origin, but was devised by the human Animorphs, who found "Aximili" too hard to pronounce. Ax's father calls him "Aximili-kala" as a pet name; the meaning of this unknown.

In The Ellimist Chronicles, when the Ellimist visits the primitive ancestors of modern Andalites, names were apparently limited to terms such as Tree, Water, or Star. As a result, many Andalites had the same name.

_______________// FILE: LANGUAGE/RITUALS

Rituals are very important to the Andalites. They have small rituals, which mostly involve reciting prayer-like words, at certain events. There is a morning ritual, a ritual for children, a ritual for dying in battle, and a ritual for avenging one who has died.

Morning Ritual

Evening Ritual

Wish-Flower Ritual
(full words unknown)

_______________// FILE: TIME

Andalites use a different calendar than humans, although it still is in years (The Hork-Bajir Chronicles gives the Andalite date). Andalite years are in ten 'periods' or months, and are given like this: 7544.2. One Andalite year is equal to 84 Earth months, or about 8½ Yeerk cycles; as a result, K.A. Applegate has stated that Ax is only three or four Andalite years old, though this is equivalent to the ages of the other Animorphs.

Andalites have a natural internal clock, and know exactly when 2 hours have passed - as reflected by their morphing technology.

_______________// FILE: TERMINOLOGY
Andalite Lexicon
Andalite Homeworld: The name of the native planet of the Andalites is not given in the series, and is simply referred to as the Andalite homeworld. It possesses more than one sun, which gives its sky a red-gold hue, and the planet is covered with less water as compared to Earth. The planet also has four moons which according to Aximili can make the night sky almost as bright as daytime when all are full. The landscape mainly consists of gently rolling hills and plains, where the Andalites live in family groups and small tribal bands, in keeping with their ancestral roots as a grazing species. Advanced cities exists in the form of three great spaceports.

Aristh: Andalite word similar to cadet. An aristh is of the lowest rank in the Andalite military, and must, by definition, serve under a prince.

Derrishoul Tree: An asparagus-shaped Andalite tree.

Death Ritual: Ritual undertaken by Andalite warriors who are in danger of immediate death. It reads as follows; I am the servant of the people, I am the servant of my prince, I am the servant of honor. My life is not my own, when the people have need of it. My life is given for the people, for my prince, and for my honor.

Dome Ship: The Andalite capital ship. Shaped similar to a mushroom, a Dome ship features a large park enclosed by a dome at the top of the ship, with an environment similar to that of the Andalite homeworld. The three engines are located at the bottom end of the ship. The domed park and the engines are connected by a long, narrow shaft, which is the main section of the ship and houses the bridge as well as weapons systems. The pride of the Andalite navy, a fleet of Dome ships are said to be nearly invincible. Four Dome Ships are named in the series: StarSword (TAC), GalaxyTree (books 1 and cool , TailStrike, and The Elfangor (book 54).

Enos Emarf: A word used to describe the way a tree is framed in water.

Elupera: A location on the Andalite home world with shorelines and rocky outcroppings.

Escafil Device: The device invented by Andalites which allows anyone who touches it to absorb the DNA of an animal and morph. Also known as the "blue box" or the "morphing cube".

Estreen: An estreen is someone who is superbly skilled at morphing. After they are imparted with the ability to morph, morphing comes naturally to them. Cassie is one such person; she can control the order and appearance of the morphing process and also morphs faster than the others, even Ax the Andalite (though it should be mentioned that Ax makes clear that the ability to morph has no bearing on which species the morpher belongs to). Professional estreens called morph dancers exist on the Andalite world for entertainment.

Evening ritual: To begin the evening ritual, an Andalite first looks at the last bits of color coming from the sun setting below the horizon. Then they say: From the rising of the sun to the setting, to its rising again, we place what is hard to endure with what is sweet to remember, and find peace.

Flaar: An Andalite animal which smells similar to a human.

Frolis Maneuver: A technique for combining the DNA of animals to create a "blended average" of them. Used by Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul to create his human morph, and also by Ax to create his. Presumably, Visser Three used this technique to create his human, "Aria", morph.

Galard: The language of interstellar trade used by the Andalites, Hork-Bajir, Yeerks, Skrit-Na and Taxxons. The Yeerks borrowed it from their Ongachic hosts, because it was easier for Gedd hosts to speak it rather than the Yeerk language (clicks and ultrasonic squeaks).

Hald Wurra: Old Andalite for 'victory in three swipes'. It refers to a specific tail-fighting maneuver.

Hereth Illint: This Andalite phrase translates roughly to "burping DNA", and refers to the expulsion of acquired DNA that the morpher has an allergy to. This entails the creation of an entirely new animal from the expelled DNA from excess mass in Z-space. The "burp" is a response to the loss of morphing control caused by DNA allergies.

Hirac Delest: An Andalite's final statement, recorded that the Andalite's peers and posterity might judge and understand the Andalite's life and the choices he or she made.

Illsipar Root: A species of plant which can be consumed to ease the pain of Soola's Disease. Also a delicacy.

Ixcila: A electronic copy of a sentient being's brain waves, effectively saving their memories and personality. May be an Arn rather than Andalite technology.

Kafit Bird: A species of bird of the Andalite homeworld with three pairs of wings, which affords it great maneuverability and speed. One out of the only three species of bird that exist on the homeworld, and widely considered the best.

-kala: Andalite suffix attached to a first name indicating affection, usually on children of a parent.

Mirrorwave Call: A form of thought-speak used to communicate with other Andalites en masse and across great distances.

Modular Waste Disposal System: Essentially an Andalite toilet, encountered in book 14, The Unknown. The MWDS is the alien "vessel" stored at Zone 91, an Animorphs-universe equivalent to the alien technology supposedly concealed at Area 51.

Morning Ritual: An Andalite warrior, at the beginning of the day, performs the following ritual; They say "From the grass that feeds us" while crunching grass under their hoof, then say "From the water that gives us life" while dipping the same hoof into a body of water. Then, they say "For the freedom that unites us, we look to the stars." While spreading their arms wide. Then, they say "Freedom is my only cause, service to my prince, my only duty. The destruction of my enemies, my most solemn vow. I, (insert name), offer my life." This is the closing section of the ritual, where the Andalite warrior puts his own blade to his throat, and asks himself if he is doing his duty.

Notallssith: The condition of being unable to control a morph

Nothlit: A person that has stayed in morphed form for longer than the two-hour time limit; and is therefore forced to remain in that form indefinitely (barring higher interference, as the Ellimist has reinstated the true form/morphing power of Elfangor and Tobias). Or,in the case of Cassie, if you stay in a morph that goes through metamorphosis (Ex. when Cassie morphed into a caterpillar in book #19 and when she turned into a butterfly from a caterpillar) Ax told the group that natural morphing resets the biological morphing clock.

Onkalillium: A type of Andalite organic medicine.

Plintconarythmic physics: The highest level of study in Andalite physics. Reserved for the elite in the Andalite scientific community - but Estrid-Corill-Darrath understands it perfectly. She tries to explain to Ax the functions and limitations of human speech in the 'n' dimensions, but it sweeps over the top of his head.

Prince: An Andalite military rank, it does not refer to royalty. Each warrior serves under an Andalite prince, variations include 'War-Prince' and 'Captain-Prince'. In the series Ax continually refers to Jake as 'Prince Jake' as the group considers him to be the leader of the Animorphs.

Quantum virus: A biological weapon designed by Andalite military scientists that can affect only one specified species. Such a virus was used on the Hork-Bajir homeworld near the end of the battle with the Yeerks for control of the planet by Alloran-Semitur-Corass, in a futile attempt to limit the number of healthy Hork-Bajir hosts for the Yeerks to infest. The use of such a weapon is considered to be ethically unjust by the larger Andalite society, most of whom believe that reports of the use of the virus on the Hork-Bajir are merely Yeerk propaganda.

Sario Rip: A tear in the fabric of space-time that causes one to travel forward or backward in time. An extremely large, intense concentration of energy is required to cause one of these rips. The direction and distance one will travel in time when using these is unknown.

Seerow's Kindness: An Andalite law that forbids Andalites from giving technology to any foreign species. Named so after Prince Seerow, who pitied the Yeerks in their natural state and taught them about the universe. The resulting destruction caused by Yeerk conquest made this one of the most important and fundamental laws of Andalite society.

Soola's Disease: An Andalite disease which causes blindness and muscular degeneration in its sufferers, culminating in a slow and painful death. There is no cure but to morph another Andalite without the disease and overstay the 2-hour limit.

Shorm: The actual Andalite word for a tail-blade, although it is more commonly used as an equivalent in the Andalite language for 'best friend'. An Andalite is said to fully trust a shorm should he be allowed to place a blade at their throat.

Shormitor: Tail-blade carvings made by primitive Andalites.

Shredder: An Andalite built directed energy weapon. Although it is more powerful and efficient than the Yeerk-built Dracon beam, it is actually from this weapon that the Yeerk-built counterpart was developed. In contrast to the Dracon beam, which causes intense pain, the shredder weapon destroys its targets fairly quickly and painlessly. These weapons come in varying levels of intensity, ranging from simple hand-held sidearms to the main weapons used on the mighty Andalite Dome Ships, capable of 'punching a hole through a moon.'

Torf: The torf is an andalite tail-fighting technique that involves using the flat side of one's tail blade to strike the adversary's temple. According to Ax, it isn't much use against stronger creatures like Hork-Bajir, but it will knock a human out cold for hours.

Therant: A species of Andalite tree with pink leaves.

Thought-speak: Thought-speak is the method of communication of the Andalites similar to telepathy. The Andalites use this means of communication. Those who have morphed using Andalite morphing technology can also communicate using thoughtspeak, but not in their natural forms. Thought-speak works on a level higher than words, so lingual barriers are not a problem. In the Animorphs book series thought speak is represented by < and > (brackets) instead of quotation marks (").

Tria Gland: The tria gland is the Andalite equivalent of an appendix, located in the back of their head. Ax's tria gland became infected and had to be removed by Cassie with the aid of Erek King.

UAST: The University of Advanced Scientific Thinkers, an institution for the best of Andalite intellectuals.

Unit O: An elite Andalite military unit, specialising in covert operations.

Unschweet: A haircut given to disgraced Andalites. When an Andalite warrior commits a misdeed, his or her commanding officer uses his tail blade to cut off a patch of fur from the offending warrior. This bare patch serves as a mark of shame representing the warrior's offense. As the fur grows back, the Andalite is slowly redeemed by time and experience, until, finally, the incident is laid to rest and the warrior is whole again.

Utzum: Andalite belief of a vision at the time of death to help ease them as they "cross over".

Vecol: An Andalite with a disability, such as being without a tail blade. They are shunned from their society and often sent into exile, viewed as inferior and useless to society. The reason behind such treatment is that Andalites believe the solitude of a vecol is the only dignity he or she has left. Ax exhibits distaste for vecols. The term was introduced in #40: The Other, where a vecol is central to the plot of the story.

Wish-flower ritual: A ritual performed before the birth of a younger sibling.

Yamphut: A "morphing sickness" affecting the Tria gland that all of the Animorphs (except for Cassie) became infected with. Although it only causes flu-like symptoms in humans, it can be fatal to Andalites.

Yaolin: A curse word, used in a similar fashion to "what in hell" e.g., "What in yaolin are you doing here?!"

Z-space: Short for zero-space, it is the non-dimension through which faster-than light travel and communication is possible. A person in zero-space will see white, as opposed to the black of normal space. When morphing small animals, one's excess mass is extruded into zero-space. It's stated to contain some mass in an unknown form, which is used when someone morphs into an animal bigger than their own body. See also the Star Trek concept of warp and subspace.

Z-space transponder: A small electrical component similar to a diode that converts matter/energy into a format that can be transmitted through Z-space

. . . A performer on the Andalite Homeworld, Exalla proved to be a talented shifter from the when she was first imbued with the ability. Lithe, agiles, and graceful, she turned to the arts as had been expected of her. The war with the Yeerk was a far-off nightmare to those on the Homeworld, more fable then reality. Having gained some recognition for her skills as a dancer, she had been invited to perform aboard a local Dome Ship.

However, shortly after arriving, the Sky ceased to be. It threw the ship into a state of chaos after so many weeks of instability on the Homeworld and other colonized planets... The best minds available aboard the ship had no idea what was going on. None of their advanced theories, none of their cutting edge technologies, nothing could penetrate the nothingness the ship had been suspended in. Some thought it must be a space-time anomally but nothing could be proven. Non-military personnel were evacuated along with a few escorts in several smaller ships and sent towards the Homeworld's last known co-ordinates. Among them was Exalla, who had been evacuated with two others in the ship she had arrived in - one civilian engineer and one guard, but it became obvious the event stretched on and on for they never found the Homeworld.

In time, the isolation got to the refugees and an argument between the two males left one dead. The remaining male went mad with grief as the slain male had been his closest friend and being a creature of honour... the guard could see nothing but the blood on his hands. Exalla would not deal with the disgraceful male and shut herself into one of the smaller rooms of the transport. They'd attempted to turn around and head back to the Dome Ship but that, too, had been to no avail.

It was only when the surviving male attempted to open the airlock and evacuate the ship's hold in some bid to cleanse his conscience that Exalla was left alone. Alerted too late to the opening of the doors, much their air supply and cargo, along with the guard, were swept into the void and disappeared.

Left to contemplate starving to death or drifting until she died of old age, Exalla found herself with no choice but to resign herself to her fate. With no idea how much time had passed, how far they'd drifted, or what, exactly, they drifted in... she spent her time meditating, practicing her morphing skills and portioning out the supplies.

When the stars suddenly appeared once more, for no apparent reason, Exalla wasn't sure of what she was seeing at first, it had been so long. They were unfamiliar but present and in the view screen loomed a blue-green planet she'd never seen before. With joy and boundless relief, she attempted to get the ship working again but it stubbornly refused to respond much at all... She crash landed shortly thereafter.

Any specific requests? (custom only) I'd like the template used for Valor's morph please!
I honestly can’t remember what my custom form initially said and I’m more than comfortable leaving it in your capable hands. That said, I would like for her to retain the centaur-esque body type over the course of her growths and that’s about it. How that plays out, I’m happy to keep a surprise!
