The truth of the matter, Avalon decided, was that there was just no knowing what the truth of anything was. Nimue would probably say something about patience and float off to mourn over her dead king. Camelot might be a good bet, but he'd probably be horrified about what she was considering. She didn't know Shalott well enough to trust her. She hadn't seen Babylon in ages, and Valhalla… maybe she could talk to Valhalla. If she could find him. Wait, didn't she have a signet for that?… She bit her thumbnail, thought about it, decided: later.

Right now, she was waiting for someone in particular, and she'd rather not get disturbed.

As always, there was a feeling of apprehension attached to contacting Zinkenite. Accidental meetings were bad enough--she remembered clearly the General-King slamming her into a wall, when he was a general, she remembered him trying to kill her when she was just a civilian and he was a Captain--and doing this now, when she was hurt, was probably the absolute worst idea ever. She couldn't think of any other option. She had to go to the sources of the stories she heard. She had to make sure that these things rang true at all levels, that the highest of the high agreed with what the Captain she'd met had said.

She leaned back against the ledge of the building's roof, legs stretched out before her. Running would probably not be an option, but Zinkenite had never seemed particularly violent before… She could risk it. Couldn't she?

He appeared, exactly on time, how else after all would he choose to appear? His arms were folded behind his back, either trust or cockiness or confidence, then again knowing him there was a metal sphere clutched just out of view, waiting to belch forth its noxious smoke.

He gave an owlish blink, eyes shifting slightly from one side to another before he made a small hummm sound and nodded. “So… it’s not a trap, or some clumsy attempt at one.”

The voice was as soothing as ever, a black velvet sound that left the seeds of ideas in receptive minds. “So you wanted to speak to me.”

It was a statement, though he was indeed curious as to why. “I’ll give you thirty seconds to tell me why.”

There was a warning in his voice though it had been ages since you fought.

The momentary revulsion and terror struck, and then she took a deep breath and said, "I want to talk about why the Negaverse is doing what they're doing. I want to know their reasons. Not the dogma everyone chants because the rank and file needs it, you know, protect and serve the ******** Earth--why did you think it was necessary to kill people? Why not just gather energy in the first place? I know you can, I know that's how it works--so why the murder in the first place? What did the senshi do to earn your enmity?"

Avalon didn't get up off the roof; it was probably the first time since she had met Zinkenite where she actually had to look up at him, as opposed to down. It was a weird angle to be at, so she thought. She was used to looking down, anyway.

Hopefully the deluge of questions was enough to justify her requesting a meeting in the first place. She didn't want to know what the hell he had behind his back when she couldn't really run to get clear of it.

“I’ll answer, but I want you to think about this. I will not spoon-feed you anything because it will just come out as doctrine. So consider what I tell you very carefully.”
He spoke the words carefully, precisely, before he jumped down to stand with you. He was taller than he had been, not enormously but still.

“Consider first, that this is the only senshi strong hold left… in the world. We haven’t wiped cities off the map; we haven’t slaughtered humans indiscriminately or created an army that could span the globe either.”

He tiled his head. “We haven’t tried to tell them how to run their countries, their lives… though we do put people into the works, whisper into the right ears. Ideas, ideas can change –everything, but only if they are willing, and ready to listen. We haven’t forced that… not even as long as they have been there.”

He paused to let that sink in. “And then there is what I have seen of senshi, I have seen a senshi home world or two… ruins. Desolation, civilizations utterly wiped off the face of the earth, cultures fallen and likely never to be revived. They sight that we, are of course the reason for this. They say they –remember-, and then profess that they are entirely, human.” He tipped his chin down like a teacher at a lesson.

“Yet I think we both know, that the powers at work around us can play curious tricks on opinions, on MEMORY. If both sides didn’t BELIEVE that the other was absolutely out to ruin life, as they knew it, we wouldn’t have a war. Till recently, we didn’t even have a way to the stars, and look what it took us to get there. More…we were utterly blocked by the surrounding, though to the best of my knowledge many worlds exist well beyond it out of our reach, out of our influence. Perhaps we were the source of the downfall of those worlds…but looking at how the senshi interact, from as objective a standpoint as I am capable of HAVING being as I am an agent of ‘Chaos’, I have my doubts.”

“Would I… if I had the power thrust upon me…defend the world from a faction at war with itself? Would I defend it from a group of people who proclaimed themselves good, and agents of order when it lacks –structure, discipline, even respect for its own?”

He nodded in answer.

“I find it ironic, that at least from where I stand, ‘Chaos’ is ordered, and ‘Order’ is in chaos…”

That seemed correct. Senshi were largely considered a Destiny City phenomenon; a terrorist group or a secret society of saviors, she wasn't sure which was more accurate to say. She couldn't remember ever hearing about another senshi or knight outside the City, or even one that had been awakened away from Destiny City. No one had reported anything sounding like Negaversers that she was aware of… although to be honest, she'd never looked. Even when she'd been trying to catalogue the possible Negaverse-related deaths, she'd only looked within DC proper.

"Some knights remember past lives," she said. "My Wonder is here on Earth and it's empty, too. It's just ruins now." Most places were, anyway. The chapterhouse, the knight's residence, those seemed… perfectly intact, you know, except for the bones. And the ash. And the dust.

She leaned forward a little, rested her palms on her thighs. She remembered the fight at the Surrounding--she'd fought on the side of Order, then. Now she wasn't sure she'd made the right decision. "They argue all the time," she said, remembering her encounter with Valhalla and Babylon on the Surrounding.

Avalon fell silent, then. Memory was a tool, sure, but it was almost never accurate. It canted one way or the other based on anything that she could care to name. Any number of things could change it, could make what happened seem to happen differently… "If you don't mind, what can you tell me about the Blood Moon Court?"

He tensed slightly, at the name, the court that had become the Dark Moon Court, opening its eyes via its queen. “The Blood moon court, the ones who captured members of our organization including tanzanite, and many others… drugged them, bound them…and tortured them. They used various resources at their disposal to keep us from finding them, we searched the city high and low trying to find some hint of where they had taken them only to find scraps of uniform… they killed Tanzanite, or as good as it… she came back as something else, desperate, clinging to what remained of her humanity, more youma than not. They cut the throat of a lieutenant who just joined us, they put out wolfram’s eye. They were… desperate men and woman fighting for the cause of order, they wanted to be the best fighters order had I think. The best it had to offer by using their powers to try and gain information about our civilian lives so they could target us, our families… our friends more effectively.” He shook his head.

“In a perverse way I have to respect their commitment, but they were largely, insane. Ares, the most broken of them…think of her as a bone that was broken, something, though I don’t know what set her in my mind. I don’t know how… as best I can tell no one knows HOW she turned to Chaos, but she did, the Dark Moon court rose from the ashes of blood, torture, and pain.”

The encyclopedic recitation might have not phased Avalon, had the subject matter not been so interesting to her. Torture? Murder? And Wolfram… He'd stabbed her, citing the Blood Moon as all the reason he needed to think of her as an enemy. Her hands moved to cover the still-healing wound. "Oh my god," she said, because what else could she say? For all that she largely didn't believe in a higher power, there were few ways you could even react to hearing a friend of yours (he'd only hurt her to defend her) was tortured by people you'd been staunchly defending.

Oh, Wolframite, she thought, clenching her hands into tight fists. I'm so sorry.

"Who can I talk to if I want to confirm what you've said," she asked. "Blood Moon Court or Dark Moon Court or whichever it is now." It'd help if he could name some Order-side senshi, but she wasn't going to bet on that. She would see what she could find out on her own as far as the White Moon went.

“Leto, or Remarque.” He said without a moment’s hesitation. Faith, faith in a senshi even one who served the cause of ‘Chaos’, someone who had been part of the blood moon court and now served the DMC, yet he trusted Leto at least… with little reservation at all, and Remarque because…well, he wasn’t going to share the why’s with her, not now…not yet.

“Both Dark Moon Court members, well spoken, but direct. They won’t lead you on a marry chase for information around propaganda. Though you might be hard pressed to speak to them directly.”

He hesitated and tilted his head, owlishly at her. “Tell me, that message… “ The rest of the question hung unspoken. How had she delivered it?

She blinked at him, somewhat confused. The message? … Oh. She extricated her hands from each other, held it up between them. Avalon kept her nails trimmed close to the quick, and aside from the miscellany of scars collected through mediums normal and ab-, her hands were quite unremarkable. But on the left ring finger was a golden signet, marked with the shape of an apple holding the cross of Earth.

"This," she said. "My signet ring. It essentially allows me to send messages to others." She lowered her hand, twisted the ring on her finger. "As long as I know their name." Zinkenite didn't need to know about any weird dreams she may or may not have had about learning to use some kind of weird knightly magic. "It can do other things, too, but this is the most useful."

Leto and Remarque. She'd approach both of them if she could--either or could confirm Zinkenite's story. "Are they named after a star like Order senshi? Or should I be asking you to spell their names for me?"

“Leto wears camouflage, you may not see her but I suspect if you sent her a message and asked for information you might well find her. L-E-T-O.” He spelled the name with over emphasized care and a small smile. “Remarque is the senshi of puppetry, his uniform is rather one of the most colorful I have seen, more so even than your ‘Senshi of Rainbows’, the one with the Duke-brother’s drawl.”

“R-E-M-A-R-Q-U-E” if the spelling is paramount, though it’d be interesting to know where they wind up if you do miss-spell something.”

He waited there a moment, watching you. “While I am curious what brought you to speak with me after all this time, I would not be surprised if you refused to say. That said… when you confirm what I have said…if you want to speak again you do know where to ‘find’ me.”

He waved a hand at the curious gold signet, and made a quiet note to see if he couldn’t learn more about them…and the ‘wonder’ she spoke of as well.

"Maybe I'll tell you one day," said Avalon, pushing herself up slowly to avoid aggravating anything particularly splintery. God, she hurt all over--was daring to henshin up at all even worth the risk while healing, the Negaverse seemed as nonviolent as they would ever get at this point. "Next time."

She tucked her arms around her stomach. "So... I'm gonna go now. Thanks for... not killing me? I'd like to continue to not be killed, if that's an option."

It was always an option for Negaversers to flip and kill her, after all.
