Zach's favorite story as a child was the War of the Beasts, the story starts with a poem, When the war of the beasts brings about the worlds end, The goddess descends from the sky His favorite line. The story talks about a point in the worlds history called the war of the beasts, it was called this because of the two men who led their armies in it, one man with a single white wing, the side of good, and one man with a single black wing , the side of evil. There was one more man, the side of the bloodied, he had a single, dark, blood red wing to symbolize the blood on his hands for the entire human race, this man was said to have the power to completely destroy the world. He aligned himself with neither the side of light or dark, he sought only the destruction. But then, one day as the war around him was about to bring the planet he so hated to its premature end, a goddess descended from the sky, she had one white wing and one black. She’d watched the war for years and cried over the poor humans who fought each other for such petty reasons. She spread her wings far and wide, she enveloped the world in her holy embrace and suddenly, the war stopped, and people stopped hating each other. The war of the beasts, and the beasts that started it, were all gone. The part the story didn’t tell was that when the goddess stopped the war it took all of her power, she fell to the earth in a deep sleep, only one of the winged men, one of light, dark, or bloodied, could wake her from her sleep and grant her her powers back, and that man would have the power for one wish. Or so the legend said, in real life the war of the beasts was ended by the treaty of the leviathan, says the adults, Zach knew better, he loved to hear the story, his favorite character was the bloodied winged man, he always thought he must have been so lonely, while the dark and light winged men had they’re armies, he was alone, he knew how lonely he was because the story, quite literally was written about him. He always hid it, no one but his parents knew, but under his clothes always, was a single blood red wing. He loved the story because it made him think, for just a minute, that it wasn’t about him but about other people; but when it was over he’d always feel the same, he dreaded growing up, he hated his wing, he was scared of the others with wings, and he was doubtful about meeting the goddess. Today is Zach’s eighteenth birthday and signs of war are popping up everywhere, and sightings of people with wings talking of war are even more common.
