Melvin was finding himself in the Infirmary more and more, partly due to how many people always wound up in it, and because it was a branch of the Life Division and had plenty of work to be done when you didn't otherwise want to be in the labs fixing printers and fetching coffee. While not the nurturing sort, he could get food, stock, and just find himself work. Sometimes he could just find out about the more healing aspects of runic tech just by hanging around long enough. Then there was all the cleaning supplies and disinfectant. That was nice too.
Melvin had made 3 new beds, pristine white and bleached clean, and was satisfied with how crease free and tidy they were. True, someone was going to much it up again soon, but right now they were orderly and nice to look at.

A burst of commotion, some yelling and barking of orders, and a heavy amount of swearing suddenly erupted through the front door, a gurney being run by the beds Melvin had just cleaned, followed by a team of medical staff, all very serious looks on their faces. Someone came back from a mission, completely bloodied and bruised.
Lex walked in the other door, sipping a mug of coffee and giving the party a wide berth. He was the guy who changed out IV's and replaced bandages, not the one to stitch people up, do surgery, or set up monitors. A lackey for now, which was completely fine by him.
Walking past Melvin and stopping, he gave the other trainee an appraising look before smiling.
"Ah, hi there! You must be a trainee too, right?" He offered his hand in greeting, chuckling the slightest bit. "I'm Alexei, call me Lex though."

The gurney rushing by was not new, but each time he had to see the damage, and each time he regretted it. It was a constant warning, a constant reminder, that there was death and danger present. It was a large downside to duty work in the Infirmary, and he looked away as they passed. Hopefully he wouldn't be hearing bad news gossiped later. The Life doctors were miracle doctors, but that didn't mean white sheets got used just to cover beds.
As someone came by, he looked back and gave a slow wave. "Yeah, I'm a trainee. Melvin wood. Life." He told him, before glancing back where the gurney and doctors vanished. "You work here?" He hadn't seen the trainee before, but there were many people who came and went here.

"Yup, I work here when I'm not either cleaning out a minipet tank or studying Norse into the late hours of the night. And, you know, the occasional spar." The small bandage on his chest seemed to throb at that, but he paid it little heed. "Been here around two months, just doing the same old same old."
He paused and sipped his coffee, thinking for a moment. Surely they'd seen each other around, having worked in the same area? Probably passed by each other, or something. Another sip of coffee, a light clearing of his throat.
"Have you been around much longer? Worked on anything besides bloody patient and smelly minipets?"

He tried to remember when he arrived. "A little over 2 months, going on 3." Really? He felt he had been here MUCH longer, and yet he already had a routine and knew his way around for the most part, at least around the labs.
"I've been working on my own minipets in the labs, minipet duty too just like everyone else, working here in the Infirmity, spars, and training courses. Seems like a awful lot considering how long I've been here." He was still surprised now that he thought about it. "I guess I just haven't noticed you around. This place is usually crazy anyways." To which he jabbed a thumb in the direction the gurney went.

His own minipets? Like...he'd actually kept those things? Lex just dumped the ones he'd collected from that Halloween festival into tanks, completely done with them. They weren't real animals, like a good dog was. Just little scraps and idle thoughts that went poof when beat up too much. He'd seen some of the experimentation, though he wasn't too keen on doing it himself. He helped out enough by prepping them for experiments, also known as muzzling them, clipping their wings, doing whatever he could to make sure they couldn't fight the scalpels and probes.
"Well, they certainly don't let us have much off time, do they?" A laugh, but he shook his head. He preferred it that way. More time being productive, less time to reflect on and be aware of himself. "Though, I'd die from boredom if we weren't so busy."

He gave a sigh in agreement. "Not a tv, no movies, no places to just go to, cars, other people to talk to, and the weather is just the worst. I can't even go to a restaurant and eat something better. I can't wait till the portals are open and I'm allowed to leave for a day. I won't know what to do first." He wanted to eat out, go shopping, watch a movie, and just sleep in a big bed that wasn't his door. Maybe find some action. Defiantly find some action.
"What were you doing before you got to this great island?"

Lex gave Melvin a rather smug look, brushing his knuckles against his coat as he leaned against a bed. He thought of many answers, but decided to just play it coy and cocky, as usual.
"The better question Melvin, is who?"

Melvin wasn't so amused. So the man was a playboy or at least thought he was. "I see. You must be feeling cooped up here then? Why did you leave to come to such an exciting place as this island?" He had to wonder if someone who was chasing tail would be bored here. Sure, there were plenty of techs around just dying to get off to give them something to do, and would jump on anything at this point just to get a few minutes of enjoyment. For all Melvin knew, Lex found this place as easy as shooting fish in a barrel. He probably was carrying something transmitted.

"Eh, not really. I've found outlets." Lex smirked, chuckling a little in the back of his throat. But - there was a more pressing question. Why did he come to Deus? Simple enough, really.
"Well, I was tired of living in paranoid fear of the shadows; and trust me, there are a lot of shadows on the dance floor, in the clubs, in the bars, and casinos. Shadows are everywhere; I wanted to fight back." His tone had sprinkles of seriousness in it now, and he was done leaning on the bed.
"What about you? Why are you on 'Hell's Isle?" He asked, making finger quotes. In Lex's mind, the place wasn't too bad.

Melvin resumed fixing the sheets to the bed he just made. "Like most people, I wanted answers to what I was seeing. Facts, proof, answers. Something more concrete than just my word against everyone else with degrees." He finished fixing the bed, moving over to the text one.
"I was in college studying hoping to find some answers, and that's where I was found by Deus Ex." He gave up his life, his studies, his family and friends for these answers.

Mmmm, proof? Lex had always just accepted that the shadows were there and that was that - though he realized not everyone could be like that. Some people questioned things to the point of doubting their own existence was real. Was Melvin one of those types? Maybe he was - which was good for a Life hunter.
Did that make Lex a bad Lifer? No, not really. He questioned things - just not to that point. "So I assume you've got your proof now, right?" A quipped, smirking a little. Who wouldn't after that whole mess at the Haunted House? But it also brought up more questions - for him, they were questions of authority. They'd been used as bait, and treated like disposables.
But then there were questions of how the Insanity was able to manifest itself the way it did; and completely change two Hunters into abominations. Humans didn't have FEAR cores like Halloween beasts did, so...how?

"A little too much proof. You go from being told these things don't exist to being dropped into the university of monsters. I still have moments where I take a minute to just realize where I am of all places and wonder if I'm not in some sort of coma dream." He laughed a bit at his own foolishness before he fixed the other bed.

Lex shook his head, still grinning - albeit a sort of sad one. "Yeah...coma dream. Wouldn't that be a happily cliche'd ending to our tale? When we die, we just wake up in a normal hospital with our loved ones all watching over us and rejoicing that we're alive." He snorted inwardly at that sentiment.
Regal did too. They both knew this was real; way too real. But that was why Lex signed up - because it was real and a fact of life that had to be dealt with. This was his way of dealing with it - to confront it.
He clapped Melvin on the shoulder, smiling genuinely. "Well, good to meet you, Melvin. I've got some duties that needs attending to. See you around."
He walked away, humming something that sounded suspiciously like the "Hi-ho" song from Snow White.

Melvin was about to let him go when a question popped in his head. "Hey Lex. Why are you studying Norse so late in the night?" Had to be a reason why a Lifer was dedicating his time on a single subject.
