Altar of the Old Gods: Quest

Altar of the Old Gods:

Requirements: You will need to PRP "researching" up this area (again a prp with your characters just discovering this information in a book is fine), before heading off on this quest. One person will need to be the dungeon master of this quest line: you can have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 characters in this quest. Due to not taking forever, the "Dungeon Master" has control of the pacing: even if not everyone replies, it is okay to go the next round as long as it makes sense from the Dungeon Master's POV.

Historical IC background: The Altar of the old Gods, also known as the Parthenon in history was once where mortals went to worship the Old Gods, also known as the time before Halloween was fully created. The Old Gods left many items after they vanished, including hundreds of artifacts. Most of these they blessed to mortals, but several of them they kept hidden.

The Altar of the Old Gods is now abandoned: only the hardiest dare take the trek. It is located in a niche between the Human World and Halloween, portals randomly spawn to the area but they are very much by chance. The highest chance of portals spawning to that exact location is by parking yourself in the Weeping Forest.

gaia_crown [ Getting Started: ]

Getting into the Altar of the Old Gods:
- You need to camp out in the Weeping Forest after reading the information. Hunters can enter Halloween as well without a golem (recommended as the Altar itself is very golem unfriendly due to its climate and high altitude as well as natural enemies), for a max of 30 minutes. Each roll takes 5 IC minutes - students can pretty much park here as long as they need as well as horsemen while Hunters will need to exit and enter back again.
- Basically, all Hunter characters have 6 chances to find the portal. If they don't find it, they will need to leave and come back. Students and Horsemen do not need to ICly leave and come back.
- All players roll 1d100.
- Rolling 50 or less will let players find a portal that randomly leads to someone's house. Feel free to RP this as you please as awkwardly as you please
- Rolling 70 or less will let players find a portal that leads to the Land of Holidays. Right now is really not the time for Xmas cheer...and the creatures there seem extremely hostile
- Rolling 80 or less will lead you to the Haunted House.
- Rolling 81 or higher will let you find the portal! Success! You can now proceed inside.

It had been a blurry past few days for Mort. Time didn't matter so much when around Belladonna, as it fluctuated between the nights going by too fast and the days crawling forward too slow, or completely stilled in those strange times he had fondly begun to call "witching hours"; they had been alternating staying in each other's rooms in spite of dorm rules for the past week and a half. It was a slow process towards regaining his old humor - assuming the scraps he had original had still existed - but she was too optimistic to let down.

But on those nights where he could not find it in him to be lulled into a hazy unconsciousness, where she stayed fast asleep and curled against him at peace, Mort had nothing to occupy him but the sound of whispers, the whirl of his thoughts good and bad, and the constant sound of her breaths and his humming brain - together they had eventually maddened him into action, into a restless need to occupy himself with something other than unnecessary haze-dreams.

And so he had taken to wandering away when he was sure she was deep in sleep, for usually not more than a couple of hours, and busied himself. Sometimes he would stay in the room and pull out old plans he had envisioned in happier days. Sometimes he would take a book and take a brisk walk outside to find someplace to read. Sometimes he just grabbed his game oil and restarted old games, with headsets in his ears for music, and lose himself in memories that drowned out all other noise. Sometimes he would shuffle into the gym and force himself to be tired enough to crawl back into bed. And sometimes he would wander into the library.

It wasn't the sort of haunt Mort frequented often. Books were nice and all, but reading was not really a hobby of his. Building, planning, video games, interweb...not reading. It used to be, though. His first mother used to read him scarytales until he could barely sleep, his young imagination so vivid it refused to be reigned in. Mort had found a couple of the old books and had flipped through them, reminiscing about those times whereas he would normally try to forget. And eventually he branched out and began skimming through new titles, books whose covers leapt out at him in the thin light of library lamps.

But on one particular night he stumbled across a story that mentioned particular objects of power he had recently seen referenced in other books. And as he followed the threads and began piling books into the desk to look at, a small piece of hope was uncovered. In his fervor he didn't realize that he had been in there for hours, barely conscious of his actions as he whipped out his phone.

Waking alone was not an odd thing, as it had been the start to the day for the past seventeen years. Waking alone after a week and a half of waking with someone, on the other hand, was a little strange. And waking in a room that was not one's own was the oddest of all.
Normally an early riser on her own, this morning the witch was awoken by a noise from her phone, which on any other day might have been ignored for the better part of another hour or so of sleep. Especially considering the fact that sometime during the night she had partially woken to watch Mort slide from bed, but quickly been claimed by unconsciousness once more and had slept fitfully for the remainder of the night. But as Belladonna rose a little out of sleep and then realized she occupied the bed solo, the half asleep hunt for the bed's owner brought her into nearly fully awareness. A thick note that formed 'Mort' echoed around the room as the witch sat up, rubbed her fingers against her eyes and tried to refocus. All alone, little witchling.
A momentary slice of panic ripped through her, even as logic told her he had just stepped out for a shower, or for breakfast. Or x, y or z, take her pick there were a multitude of reasons why the witch would be alone after nearly two weeks of company.
Still, it wasn't a wonderfully fun first thought and Belladonna felt it totally within her rights as vaguely disgruntled ghoulfriend to pout as she reached for her skellyphone. With her brain still a little sleep addled she ended up dropping it on the floor and had to lean over to snatch it up once again. Then there was that yawn to stifle, as well as the few stray hairs that needed to be brushed from her face. Finally, after she'd decided to settle back against the pillows and sleep some more after this text, the witch read the message.

Oh. Oh well then.
With a clatter of her fingertips against the screen, Belladonna quickly tapped out a message of acceptance and notice of her getting dressed in reply. It wasn't very coherent and there were surely a few spelling errors of her own. It was just a little bit earlier than she really wanted to be awake, but the call of her zombie was just a bit too hard to deny. With slow, fumbling movements the witch slid from bed and shambled over to the closet where she rummaged through the little drawer she'd assigned to herself for clothing. An odd assortment of her own clothing had been piled into the drawer, pieces filched from her own room but not whole outfits like she preferred.
A snap of fingers did not bring any other light as it would have in her own room, so that the witch had to pick herself back up off the floor and blunder on over to the light switch to fully see. Mort's room was nice, she rather like the foreignness and mingled charm of it being his. But, if she were going to wake alone she'd rather do it in the comfort of her own room. That way she at least had the option of a full closet.
As it stood, the witch finally opted for her hooded corset, a simple skirt, striped stockings and a pair of flat boots that edged closer toward combat boots than the dainty things she'd previously taken to wearing. A quick brush of her hair rendered it unmanageable and thus earned its place as a braid over one shoulder where the end curled off at her waist. Hecate, its gotten long. Belladonna thought as she quickly washed her face and brushed her bangs in the mirror.
With all that done she heaved a sigh and grabbed her phone back up. At least they were going to a fun place! Maybe she'd see Amphi there, or ooh~ Get a few new books to read. So though she was still a little groggy, there was still some fun to be had!

Nights had been different for Alexander, but they'd been different for long enough now that he'd gotten used to it, even after six months of sharing his evenings with somebody before that option was no longer allowed to him. One month of lonely nights had followed, where to start with he refused to leave his own bedroom, holed up, curled up in the worn and beaten yet incredibly comfortable recliner chair. After that though, he had resumed old habits. Staying up all night studying, sneaking around the campus hunting for midnight snacks, or occasionally, hiding out in the library long after it was closed for the evening, finding his usual spot tucked away between a bookshelf and a wall, a stack of books at his side, reading the night away. One month of this, and then fright night and the events that immediately followed had happened, and it was like he had somehow lost another month in that time. His birthday, his planned meet up with Yin, Halloween itself..all gone in a hazy flash of fog and whispers, pain and torment, and ultimately, death.

But now he was back. His relationship with Yin had remarkably been repaired, though it was not the same as it had been before. They had both grown and changed in their time apart. They were less dependent on each other, did not spend as much time in each others company as they had before, as though they had both realized that it was unnecessary, that they could still be happy with each other without being completely inseparable. Yin had told him that for now, he would prefer if Alex no longer spent the night sharing a room with him, and the zomboil had hesitantly agreed.

That meant his nights were free. He didn't sleep, because he didn't need to. His body just did not require it, though occasionally he did allow his brain a chance to rest, to 'shut down' so to speak in a state that might have been best described as sleep but was not quite the same. He was back to doing the things that he had done before.

And that was why, when the text came from Mort, it was answered by a zomboil who was, in fact, already in the library. How many nights had they both been here without either of them actually knowing? It would remain a mystery, as Alex began the slow process of extracting himself from his position wedged between the wall and the bookshelf, slowly crawling his way up before shoving himself unsteadily to his feet, now blinking down at the phone in his hand.

The zomboil began his steady trudge, head turning back and forth until he spotted the other boil and began creeping up behind him, all stealthy like.

To Alex's credit, Mort jumped at his sudden and loud greeting with a small yelp, far too concerned with both the book arranging and the text reading to notice him coming up. How had they missed each other? It is a mystery.

...Well okay maybe not so much. Alex had been secluded against a wall while Mort had dove into the heart of the shelves, and the latter was far more irregular in his visits on the whole. Still once Mort had recovered, he whipped his head up to give Alex a toothy grin and a wry look. "Jack damn b*****d! D-Didn't know stayed here," he greeted him with a small shove. "Well, fine! Good. Means will make this easier."

He gestured for him to take a seat and continued flipping through pages to find his spot from earlier. "Found something interesting th-thought would be ideal to share. Actually've got somethin' else t'tell you too." The mirth slowly seeped out of him as he looked up. "But first, ah, doing okay? Found Yin n' all? I, er, m-meant to ask in class but..." Mort had been busy being sour faced. And also firelands. Eech.

His phone went off with Belladonna's response, and he quickly typed out a text because coffee, for once, sounded amazing.

Naturally, arriving fashionable late was always a thing one strove for when one realized they were actually going to be tardy. With the veneer of fashionably late, it meant one had the free reign to do as they pleased, as well as make a grand entrance. For Belladonna, this meant instead of arriving with just one or two coffees she arrived with three in a little cardboard carrier, as well as with a small bag of breakfast pastries tucked under one arm. Because if she was expected to be up and reading before 10AM, expected to be doing higher brain functions such as studying and trying to discover whatever it was Mort had found, she was going to do it with coffee and snacks. With all the grandeur of a thoroughly modern ghoul the witch swept into the library and happily sashayed her way through the aisles. Since she'd already downed about half of her extremely sugary, candy filled flappucino she was very well close to vibrating with energy.
When she finally happened across Mort, it was with the added surprise of seeing Alexander there as well. Suddenly the addition of the third coffee seemed like a much better idea and Belladonna vaguely wondered if that had been intuition or just her own worries about what Mort liked for coffee coming through.
"Good morning my very handsome zomboils! How are we on this not quite so sun shiney because its cloudy outside daaaay?" Belladonna singsonged in a hurried voice as she put the tray on the table, dumped the bag next to them and danced over to Mort. She placed a kiss to the top of his head before she hopped over to Alexander and greeted him with a hug around his middle. A hand reached up to ruffle his hair, found it was too far a stretch and instead settled for a pat on his shoulder, all with a bright, welcoming smile.
Coffee+ Usually Excited Witch= Caffeine high like you have never seen.
"Help yourselves to some coffee! Well except this one its miiine." This was interjected with a hand that snatched up the candycorn and caramel drink that had been half drained. "But these other two are blood and brain flavored! Well, actually that one is blood and that one is brain, but the blood one had brain chunks and the brain one had blood syrup. I wanted my bases fully covered." A terrible joke could be made at this conjecture but the witch only tittered a little laugh and helped herself to the seat next to Mort.

"So! What kind of fun new thing have you discovered for us?" Belladonna asked with a clap of her hands before she had the pastry bag open and began to pass out the treats. For herself she took a chocolate muffin that when attention was upon her she ate with delicate fingertips, but the moment the boils looked away she ripped in to. With the addition of the coffee and now the sugar, it would surely only be another ten minutes before they would have to escort a horrifically overexcited witch from the library. Already she had begun to lightly bounce in her seat, though her wide smile had yet to diminish.
The hand not consumed with the task of eating her muffin reached out to one of the books on the table as the witch brought it closer to inspect. Eh, it looked really boring and like a textbook. Not one of those fun ones with the plots and the romance and the adventure. Oh! Belladonna was supposed to pick a new book up today too! Ooohhh~ Maybe after whatever it was Mort had to say. Speaking of which, the witch quickly fixed him with a momentary pout that indicated he was going to get a scolding for letting her wake up alone. But it was quickly replaced with the smile and a curious expression over what he had to relay to them and a small inclination of her head that meant she was ready to hear what he had to say.

Scaring the unliving snot out of Mort?: Success!

There was a certain type of sick satisfaction to be had just by freaking out a friend, and Alex was rewarded for his efforts when Mort jumped in his chair and let out a yelp that the zomboil responded to with a bark of laughter. He only laughed more when the other zombie turned around in his chair and shoved at him, bringing his arms up somewhat defensively as he stumbled back towards the bookshelf. He wiped away mock tears from under his eye and straightened up with a grin, shuffling closer to Mort once more.

"Ya I spend a lot of nights here lately. Gotta be pretty careful though, since we're not actually meant to be in here when they're closed, so I found myself a nice little hiding spot." Though he often wondered if the librarian actually was more then aware of what Alex had been doing and just chose to ignore it.

The zomboil made his way towards the seat indicated and sat down with a heavy thud, resting an elbow on the table and his head in his hand. "Oh?" He asked, straightening up a little bit and frowning as he leaned forward towards the book, curious about whatever it was that Mort had found. He had barely begun reading words on the page before the other zomboil was interrupting his thoughts, however.

He glanced back up, and smiled, a much softer look then his usual face splitting grins. "Actually, surprisingly...I've been good! Doing a lot better since when we uh, first got back and...ya, I found Yin, we talked, and I think we were able to work things out between us." He nodded, happily, pretty certain that his cheerfulness said more then he really needed to say. Still, in case it wasn't completely obvious.

"We got back together." There, now it wouldn't even be a question.

He had barely finished that sentence when a certain incredibly cheerful and bubbly personality with red hair swept into the library, carrying with her a certain sense of optimism and joy that was hard to ignore. Ever the gentlemen (really, he was only rarely this thoughtful, but still) he got up out of his chair, moving to pull out the one on the other side of Mort for her to sit in. He was not really expecting the hug, or the pat on his shoulder, but it was not unwelcome either.

"Feeling great!" Was his response to her question, and he eyed the cups of coffee in the tray. He wasn't actually a big consumer of beverages, but when offered a drink, it was difficult to turn it down. especially considering they were blood and brain flavored.

He didn't even know they made coffee like that. He was amazed, and he eagerly reached out to snag one, the first one she mentioned because both sounded equally delicious.

"Thanks!" He grinned happily before making his way back to his original seat, lifting off the lid to the coffee and peering down at the bits of floating brain.

Oh ya, this was gonna be amazing.

Belladonna then asked the question that Alexander also had on his mind, so he patiently waited for Mort's answer.

Relief colored his features at Alex's good news, for his bro had been in a rut for far too long: to see him genuinely happy again was a breath of fresh air. And just like a scarytale, it was the best ending to a tragic sacrifice he could imagine. "S'great to hear!" Mort cheered with a large smile. "Here's to hoping f-for better times for all." Though how the hell was he supposed to tell him about Insanity now? Because if he knew Alex, the guy was going to feel responsible somehow for it, and he looked so damn happy it would be a kick in the teeth to bring it down.

Luckily the moment was delayed when they were joined by a caffeinated witch and her drinks. "Heeey~" he greeted with a grin as Alex settled her in, too lazy to get up himself. "N' thanks, love. Alex n' Yin're back together, m'sure you wanna know. Cheers!" He snatched the leftover cup of brains and bloody syrup and raised it to them as a toast before slurping down a few gulps, letting that knowledge sink in; or at least, Bells had always been a little nosy, and he felt like indulging her in return for the drinks.

Okay, mood was casual, caffeine was received...Jack the stuff was beginning to snake through him like a live wire. He sat the cup down and trailed a finger down the page he had the tome before him open to. "'Ve been visiting library sometimes for something to do. Sorry if woke you up couple've times," he added to Bells. "But, er, been reading old scarytales n' kept finding certain things pop up a lot. W-Went looking around in references until found this." With a grunt Mort tilted the large book towards them, careful about the drinks, and pointed to a paragraph on one of the pages with a slightly trembling finger.

"Something about Old Gods n' Parthenon," he explained. "Humans used to worship 'em. B-But most important part is that left behind power objects called artifacts. Says there's hundreds've 'em! N' if we camp in Forbidden Forest, maybe can find portal to it. I-I'm, ah...M'hoping can find something to...to fix my Insanity." There, a casual slip in might make the revelation easier on Alex.

Glad for such chivalry extended toward her, Belladonna did her best to dip in her head in a thankful, yet refined and ladylike manner. Due to the coffee, she ended up repeating the action at least three times before she stuffed a chunk of muffin into her mouth and nearly giggled with how good it tasted. The little use of a pet name from Mort won him a most glittery and adoring of looks that hopefully persuaded him, in however small a manner, to keep up such antics. Yet it was the news of the couple's reunion that made Belladonna actually say something.
"Oh Alexander, that's fantastic! I am so glad to hear that. Yes, cheers indeed!" The witch cooed in her brightest voice made soft so she wasn't shouting in the library. Quickly she grabbed up her own cup and tapped it lightly against Mort's raised one before she crinkled her eyes in a smile at Alexander and then took a mighty swig. Mmmmyes, caffine good.
Since drinks were all handed out, it was time for snacks. In a nearly doting fashion the witch handed out muffins as well as napkins to the two boils before she finished what little was left of her own.

With the mention as well as presentation of the large book, Belladonna set aside her drink to lean forward and peer at the cluttered words on the page. Pink eyes wandered around the text, caught phrases and snatches of sentences without any real comprehension, remained content to be curious. Instead the witch's senses were more focused on listening. Momentarily she looked up at Mort to give him a look of mingled acceptance and worry, for it hadn't really bothered her when he left as he usually came back. But it was unfortunate that her presence was not enough to fix things, however magical and miraculous it would have been.
Still, a tale woven through various scarytales? How odd yet vastly exciting. When the book was propped up, the witch leaned forward even further and trained her gaze on the paragraph.
"Old Gods? Parthenon? Oh, you mean the ones Humans built all those temples for? How interesting... I think most of those temples have been destroyed now, but you're right... Humans used to worship anything with a bit of power." While Belladonna did not have a vast knowledge of the Old Gods, she knew a few here and there. The idea of camping was not a pleasant one and she almost opened her mouth to balk at the idea, to suggest some other way to find these portals when the topic of Insanity was so easily and carelessly tossed in. The witch snapped her mouth closed quickly after that, eyes slightly wide as she peered up at Mort. How could he so nonchalantly talk about it when it had been, and still very much was, a point of contention?
Still... The idea of finding something to diminish it... If such an object existed, Belladonna wanted it. She wanted it right now.
"Once we find the portals, what happens next?" She asked, one slightly jittery hand finding the boil's knee under the table. Belladonna would not be able to keep it there for long, not when she was so hyped up on caffeine and sugar and needed to keep her hands constantly moving, but even a small touch of help was all she needed to convey she would help on this endeavor.

Alex was fairly glowing with happiness. The jagged pieces of his unlife that had been torn apart over the past few months were finally beginning to fit back together, hopefully to shape a much more pleasant future. He knew there were still serious things to deal with. He knew he was still an initiate and as such was required to help out with taking on missions for Medea to the human world to collect Fear. He knew that even though Caelius was apparently dead, there was still the constant threat of hunters, that they could strike at anytime and use the tagged students against them. But for once none of that seemed to be able to get him down. He had reconciled with Yin, their relationship able to resume except this time with some much needed space. He had his friends, whom over time he was becoming only closer and closer with, the ties that bind becoming ever stronger, making them as close to him as family.

Never mind the fact that he still had to contact his actual family.

Alexander lifted his cup along with the other two, a grin like to split his face in half. "Thank you! Cheers!" There was really nothing else he could say on the matter, as he was still slightly dumbfounded over Yin's willingness to get back together and try again. He tapped his cup lightly against the other two and took a long sip, savoring the taste of blood with it's hint of brains, for once not even minding the warmth of the drink as it coursed it's way down his throat and into his stomach, bringing with it a sense of comfort and contentment that fullness could provide. Oh and caffeine. Caffeine was also delightful.

One more quick swig and Alexander was setting his cup down as well, the buzz that the beverage provided already working it's way through him, brightening the look in his eye, making his fingers twitch and fiddle with the hem of his shirt before he leaned forward and let them drum upon the table top, his attention as focused on Mort as it could possibly be.

"Artifacts?" He echoed, while half listening to Belladonna's reaction, musing over the idea. Objects of power. The thought behind it was really quite exciting! He was already running through the possibilities in his own head, coming up with fantastical weapons of terrible forces to be reckoned with and------

Inasanity??

Alex's stare, which moments before had likely been quite blank as he'd begun on an adventure in daydream land was suddenly snapped towards Mort. H-had he just said......? His mouth opened slightly and a chill swept over him, a tingle the raced down his spine even as a cold feeling settled in his stomach no longer warmed by flavored coffee.

"W--What?" His voice had turned dull, the look in his eye utterly horrified. Whatever Belladonna had just said was completely ignored, or possibly just not even heard past the sudden rushing sound in his ears. He couldn't process this fully and just continued to stare.

"D-didyousay.." The zomboil sucked in a breath, eye closing as he suddenly found himself feeling quite dizzy. His hand clamped down on the edge of the table to steady himself, fingers digging in to the darkened wood lest he find himself tumbling backwards out of his chair.

Insanity. How long had he had it?

"How long?" His eyelids were still closed. If Mort answered what he thought he would answer then nothing would be able to stop the guilt train from crashing into him full force.

...Jack damn it. It was stupid of him to think Alex would take the news well under any light, but even so when Mort saw how tensed his bro became he became both sympathetic and patiently resigned to the inevitable reaction his answer would cause. It was only through the combination of caffeine loosening his tongue and Belladonna's touch supporting him that he powered through it so calmly. "S'long s'we've been back," he answered truthfully as he squared his shoulders, though he continued regardless of Alex's actions. "I-Isn't from anything you've done, alright? Was pretty much signed up for it after second bout of transformation from Insanity. I mean, I died, Alex," Mort stated, looking him in the eye even as the other zomboil's were both closed.

It was weird, saying that out loud and for once not feeling twinges of old pain. Just a simple fact, like the pumpkin sun rising and falling. But his hand still gripped the coffee cup a little tightly in instinctual reaction to the news; sometimes his body didn't believe his brain. So his other hand found the witch's and held it to keep him grounded.

"Died three times, actually, j-just not all the way for first two. N' you were there, Alex, you saw all that Insanity in Haunted House n' when we, ah . . . became weapons. N' all that other stuff." He paused to take another swig of his drink and set it down. "But did what we had to do to get them out, n' m'not regretting that one bit since it worked. So m'telling you not your fault. Got it? M'not gonna let this be death sentence, promise. " But words alone didn't do it, Mort knew this from experience: sometimes it took action to get the point across. So he closed his hand, concentrated his Fear, and slid something small across the table.

User Image

"D-Doesn't matter what happens here on out," he said, his expression softening enough to allow for a little smile. "Meant to give it earlier but, er . . . Yeah." Hopefully that drove his meaning home.

There was another pause in which he took another few gulps of his drink, now one-third through the stuff already. Laying the book back down before it tipped over, Mort explained to them, ["A-After portal, book says are couple've trials n' tribulations designed to keep 'unworthy' out. It, er, sounds dangerous but . . . M'hoping y-you two would come along, make sure don't do s-something stupid or dissipate or somethin'." The zomboil wriggled in place and wrung his hands atop the table, half from the coffee but also half because Bells and Alex were his closest friends, because if either of them rejected the proposal he wasn't sure what he was going to do.

. . . Actually he probably would still go even if they both said no, if only because there was a driving need within him now to say "screw it" to the risks. After all, when one has died enough times, pain doesn't seem all that bad anymore. He tennis-balled his gaze between them, pleading silently that they give it a chance.

Really it was only a matter of time before Alexander's brain caught up with the particular news bomb Mort had dropped. Doing her best not to grimace as she waited, Belladonna only kept her hand on Mort and idly taped her fingernails against him. Coffee had been a very bad idea, especially now mixed with the talk of Insanity, for it now turned energy into nervous energy which only attempted to multiply itself and grab its unfortunate fellows into the act. Which was rather difficult to keep at bay with how easily Mort spoke of his own death. Glad he had trained his gaze on Alexander rather than the witch, Belladonna was able to wince with all the force of her sorrow, to let her gaze fall to their joined hands and squeeze her eyes close for just a second. There would never be a time that little stretch of memory didn't hurt, no matter how much distance was put between it and her. But there was no sense in complaining about it now, or whining or do anything other than just being very quiet while the zombies talked it over. The feel of chill against her skin was enough indicator for the witch that things had returned to normal, if with a minor flaw. Yet even that could be worked through, with a bit of determination and teamwork.
During the entirety of the exchange, Belladonna had kept quiet. There was little she could say that would add anything to what Mort had already said, and the appearance of his pin did not prompt any other response. Uncertain whether it would be best to give her own to Alexander, the witch briefly glanced up at him to see if he was looking at her in an expectant manner as well. If they traded pins now, it would seal them as friends and allies. They were already friends and allies, but with the corner of Mort to complete their triangle. Right then, the witch decided she would give Alexander her pin, only not now. Not when Mort was there to see the action. They needed to be friends of their own volition, of their own wants.

"We'll fix it." Was finally what Belladonna settled on, a little softly as she brought her gaze up to both Mort and Alexander's. Ever the odd one out, she still flashed them both a hopeful smile. Often time sheer willpower was enough to accomplish the goal one set for oneself.
Thankfully the topic of Artifacts came back around and the witch took another sip of her drink before she leaned back over the now fallen book.
"Does it mention what kind of trials and tribulations? How dangerous are we talking? Are we talking disgruntled minipet dangerous or pack of Hunters dangerous? Unworthy? Does it give a definition of unworthy? Sounds very subjective to me. Also, camping? Honestly? Is there no other way? Not just a light picnic but full on, sleeping in the woods and not a bed camping?" Yes, Belladonna did not want to sleep outside when her bed was a short walk away. Still, she looked at them expectantly, all curious and excited and certainly not saying no.
"Will we need to pack anything? Some supplies? Bandages, sleeping bags, healing potions? When are we going? Now? Or later tonight?" Here the witch paused to let out a laugh before she jutted her hand forward toward the two boils, palm down in an indicator of her alliance with them.

"Sounds like fun. We could all do with a spot of fun. I'm in." So maybe in all honesty it sounded like a great deal of danger. They could dissipate or be deemed unworthy? It was dangerous? All these things were the exact opposite of what she wanted for Mort right now, and Alexander as well. But... But it was still a chance. Still a brief flicker of hope that maybe this awful ailment could be reversed. It was still the opportunity to lessen the heavy price Mort had found himself paying.

Mort confirmed what Alexander had feared. and it just drove the sharpened edges of his guilt home, deep into his chest. He was practically drowning in it, and he was sure that if he tried to breathe at that moment, he wouldn't have found that he could do so. It might not have been anything that Alexander had personally done, as Mort had said, but Alex had left them early on to go and take his exam. By the time he had gotten back it was to find out from Aymet that Mort had been taken by the fog, turned. If he'd stayed maybe they could have stayed together and fought it off.

He finally opened his one pale eye at the end of Mort's first sentence. "I know you did, but you didn't have to. And I died too, and I turned into a weapon too, and I dissipated more then once as well." Hell, Mort of all people should have known that, considering he'd been the one to tear Alexander in half. He felt like he could have said more, but what he left unspoken was clear. Why Mort, and not himself? Was it really just that Mort had spent more time insane then Alex had? Was that the only difference? He would always question whether it would have helped if he had been there, if the three of them hadnd't gotten separated.

He just nodded through the rest of Mort's words, his face set in a blank mask before he was reaching up to rub at his face. "I'm sorry man, I'm sorry if I seem like I'm taking this a bit hard but..you're my bro, and I can't help but feel at least partially responsible...." His shoulders slumped forward, his face still in his hands as he fought to regain composure. First Yin with the tagging, and now Mort with insanity. Were all the people closest to him destined to some terrible fate? But there had to be a cure, right? There had been other students who had been inflicted, and they had somehow made it through. He'd seen at least one. That tentacled ghoul.

There had to be a way. Just like there had to be a way to save those tagged students.

He raised his head from his hands, mind more focused now with a sort of grim determination. It was just another thing they were going to have to deal with, just another cherished individual that he would not let be taken by other forces.

He raised his head only to have a pin slid in front of him. His chest clenched up tight at the sight of it, his gaze quickly flickering over towards Mort. "I...." He didn't even know what to say. The only other student to have ever given him their pin had been Yin, and that had come tied with a commitment. This was...different, in a way, but no less important to the zomboil, and to be taken just as seriously. But he had to wonder if accepting it was the right thing to do, if offering his own back was within the realm of possibility for Alexander to do. He was trying very hard to honor Yin's customs, and had never actually asked him if this was okay....

But it had to be, because Alex couldn't say no. Not to Mort, and certainly not when he felt so touched by the action, and wanted nothing more then to accept it. It was not the same, it would not somehow diminish his commitment towards his bonded. This was okay. The zomboil concentrated his own Fear to his hand and brought it to the table to set something down as well, something that he slid back towards Mort.

"Only if you take mine, too." Was his gruff voiced reply, his emotions thick in this throat, making it difficult to speak.

Bro feels were happening.

And then to Belladonna, as he reached out to pluck up Mort's pin between thumb and index finger, studying it intently before answering. "Yes. We will." They would fix it. They would.

Alexander did the best that he could, to simply file away his guilt and anguish towards this horrible news, so that they could move on. It was back to business as usual, back to focusing on these artifacts that Mort was speaking of.

"I don't think it could possibly be worse then anything we've already faced." He said, before giving Belladonna chance to complain about camping of all things. Once she was finished, he just simply shrugged.

"I'm in."

Of course he was. Was there ever any doubt that he would do it?

Mort sat quietly, pangs of sympathy for his friend going through him as Alex tried to reason why just, as he had himself. And it was true: Alex had gone through a very similar process, and Petro had also been affected, and Aymet and Shehk had also permanently died with them. But of those he had seen, no-one else seemed to be exhibiting the same symptoms. Why him?

Because that was the way world worked: in exchanges and in karma. And maybe what he had told Gene long ago was right: maybe he really was just a magnet for trouble. But there had yet to be a problem presented to him that he hadn't thought of a solution for. Insanity was just another obstacle to overcome, he thought...

But ah...bro feels. Mort crinkled his eyes with a smile as he took Alex's pin, relieved and satisfied all at once. "'Ve course," he answered simply as he slid it in his pocket, knowing that the new infusion of feels would keep them there for longer if he didn't get ahold of himself. Bro hug would come for him later when he wasn't so jittery and a mission wasn't on the mind.

Thankfully Mort had coffee and Belladonna's optimism and train of questions to keep him going. He grinned fondly for a moment before answering. "S'in between Halloween n' human world, so dunno how dangerous will be. Prolly pretty dangerous. Says has been abandoned, s-so prolly will have ruins, old traps, maybe feral minies. Bandages sounds good though. Pack light." His words were moving quicker than usual, and his foot was gallon as if impatient to get to searching. "Prolly won't take long to find portal, n-not when they keep showing up. Should be careful when investigating though, who knows what other places lie on other side..."

With a chuckle Mort placed his hand over Bells's outstretched one. "Good thing have luck charm n' zombro coming along. There's magic number. But, ah...thanks, guys. Really." There was enough emphasis to show that, if he wasn't hyped by caffeine, he would have made this Moment last longer.

"Mrr...Half hour to get ready sound okay? Pack light. Bet anything others've gone before us, so...Let's hope something's there."

At the allotted time they met at the Forbidden Forest, and Mort was fully energized by the drink. He was shifting from foot to foot excitedly and adjusting the small backpack's straps, his expression bright as he greeted the two with a grin towards Alex and a kiss on the cheek for Bells. "Welcome, welcome! A-Alright, couple've portals here n' there, been watching them a bit, didn't want to start without you, but you're here now so let's gogogogo~"

He fist pumped and entered the one nearest them wih it further preamble. Not five seconds later Mort ran back out, looking as though he had seen a ghost. "N-N-Notthatone," he squeaked. "Went to house, think saw Gregory, nope nope nope. Not ready for it. Nope." His hands were clutching at themselves anxiously.

Certainly it was a bit odd to watch a moment and not participate in it, but Belladonna kept quiet, a silent witness to the testament of Zombrohood. For a moment she almost jumped up, almost conjured her own pin up to slap down on the table, but it would have felt contrived, too planned and inorganic. Soon enough the moment had passed and the flurry of questions the witch had posed were answered.
"So, the usual, you mean." She asked with a grin, a small excitement blooming in her stomach. It had been a good long while since she'd gone on an adventure, let alone a somewhat innocent one. Sure, the threat of dissipation was there as well as rabid minipets, but besides that it couldn't be that bad. At least there wouldn't be any angry Hunters breathing down their necks and at least if they dissipated they'd just come back to Halloween. (Hopefully.) All in all, it actually sounded a little bit fun.
So with a wide smile the witch nodded both Mort and Alexander. There wasn't any real reason for Mort to thank them, for he honestly should have known that of all the people he could count most heavily on the two with him, but it was still a nice gesture. With a kiss to his temple Belladonna was up, gathered her trash and shoved the last remaining breakfast pastries into the zombies' arms before she darted out of the library to go get ready. Bandages certainly didn't pack themselves!

~*~*~*~*~*

At least this time she wasn't running late, but the witch did hustle across campus toward the designated meeting spot. Even if would arrive perfectly on time, it was better to do that than risk being late with a leisurely stroll. Having absolutely refused to change her outfit, Belladonna had instead pulled her hair into a high ponytail and merely added a black messenger bag with bat wings to her current ensemble.
With far more noise, the witch happily crunched through the fallen leaves of the forest toward Mort and even more happily received his kiss. Chaste as it was, it was vastly better than no attention at all.
"That's kind of you, but let's get started! I do not want to be out here all night... Day... Forever." It was a statement that Belladonna backed up with a small pout and a hip pop of agitation, but quickly dropped the stance to watch Mort step into a portal. Patiently she waited, but only for a moment or two, before the zombie hopped back out. Confusion colored her face momentarily before she turned to a portal near her. With a shrug, for they couldn't be all that bad, the witch stepped through.

It only took her about two steps and a fall into the portal before she turned tail and clamored back out. A shriek exited the portal before Belladonna did, wherein she actually fell back through the portal and crashed onto the ground before she scrambled up and away from it. Terror colored her face as she attempted to catch her breath before she looked at the two.
"That one... Don't go.... Christmas Town. Unfriendly natives. Snow."
How unfortunate...
