Everything hurt.

This was the first thought - and the second, and the third (and the fourth, fifth, sixth...) thought - that flashed into Gale's mind upon dragging himself back into consciousness.

Groggy and disoriented, it was only after several seconds of confusion that the memories of exactly what had happened came flooding sickeningly back into him, like a waterfall of poison.

The position. Mark wanting Miniskirt Mondays. Caelius returning. The swing of a familiar scythe, an explosion -

- The barrier dagger -

The next thought was that he wished he were back in the blackness. It was more comfortable there, and certainly a lot less pain-inducing. Whatever medicines he was on (since there were bound to be a few, considering), they weren't working, or maybe they just weren't very strong at all. Though the burning had decreased significantly, his left hand still felt as though it were on fire,

He did not dare look at it, but at least he could move his fingers a little. That was a good thing, right? The room around him was bright white and familiar, smelling of disinfectant and cleaning solutions. He was in the infirmary, though it was the first time Gale had been there in a very long time as a patient.

<< Thank Jack you're awake. >>

The dragon's voice sounded immensely relieved. Gale screwed up his face in concentration. Everything was hazy and unpleasant. His head ached.

Jinhai?

<< Jeez. Don't worry me like that again. >>

How long was I out?

<< A long time. I lost track. >>

Gale closed his eyes again, trying to breathe steadily, inhaling slow, deep breaths to fill his lungs again, which felt as though they had not drawn air for years. When he opened his eyes again, he stared up at the ceiling, feeling a mixture of hatred, self-loathing, and frustration.

<< ...you did well, Gale. >>

...no I didn't.

As Gale rose, the moon hunter set on duty had come to his decision on what to say to the Death hunter when he woke up after his little adventure into the land of pain and morphine.
"I see the experiment was a success Ms. Gentry. Dakota wants to know how long until you recover so he can ask you out on a date." A familiar smile, if subdued, Marcus held a clipboard in one hand, dressed in the basic moon hunter scrubs. The only other sign of of him actually being legitimately assigned to the infirmary was the neat little pin that read 'Intern Nurse'.

Intern implying that he was still learning. Technically he'd passed the basic medical exam but confidence was ever elusive.

"So, won't bother asking yet, but scale one to ten, ten being worst, rate the pain and where. File says you tango'd with the big man and got a runic activated in a place it wasn't designed to be activated in. Don't move, I know you will feel the need to try but trust me, don't." He flipped through the papers.

"Glad to see it's just that on your file."

The look Gale gave Marcus was an utterly withering one.

"Glad to see you're up and about," he mumbled, in a disgruntled sort of tone that was partly glad, partly irritated, with a healthy dose of anger, though not at Marcus. He blew out his breath in a long exhale, tilting his head back to stare up at the ceiling.

"If you're asking whether or not I got stabbed in the bloody hand with a runic dagger by a PMS'ing arse, you'd be right," he said tonelessly, and his hand gave an unpleasant twinge just at the memory.

"And tell Dakota he can bite me."

"Glad to be up and about. But, we're not here for me now are we?" He gave Gale's face a poke with the butt of the pen in hand. "But you remember the event. That's good. Some blank out what happens. I'll pass the message along to Dakota but-" Pulling up a chair, Marcus sighed.

"Rumor is you almost became the second most powerful guy in the division. Other rumor is that you are and right now, it's just a ruse. Final rumor is Caelius's ghost came back along with his body and now he fills both roles. I will let you take that for what it is." Marcus smiled lightly. "You'll be happy to know however that we managed to keep you from ending up in Life interm care. Apparently, runic damage is 'their' field, but with the rumors it was pushed that it was in your best interests that the moon division oversee your healing." He smirked. "You're welcome."

"I remember everything," Gale muttered darkly. "Believe me, if I could forget it, I would. But unfortunately I have that smarmy d**k's face swimming in front of my eyes every time I close my eyes."

He sighed, reaching up his good hand to pinch the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger before dropping it again and looking over at Marcus.

"I was, for a few moments," he said quietly. "I was Division Assistant for all of five minutes before His Highness returned from the land of the dead and reclaimed his throne. And it was not pretty."

Gale closed his eyes, shaking his head and leaning back against the pillows.

"Seems like as far as I try to get, all I do is go two steps backwards."

Marcus wrote that down. The fact Gale recalled the event with what sounded like clarity was good. Runics could have odd results sometimes. "Better his face than his scythe. But you remember. And for that alone means we don't have to worry about anything mental wise. Aside from the usual at any rate."

A small smile rose up on Marcus's face as Gale gave him the truth of what happened. So he had been the division assistant. "All kings aim to regain their crowns. But it's rare that the usurpers live. Looking at your vitals-" Marcus actually did look at them, "-you're alive Gale. You took more than a step forward. You took a running leap, and you might have missed the edge, but you're climbing. It just seems worse than it is."

A motion to the hand. "Granted climbing will be a b***h for a while."

He gave a small snort and pulled down the collar of his shirt to reveal the small, thin scar that ran horizontally across his neck.

"I've already been on the receiving end of Caelius's scythe, remember? And it wasn't the scythe that was a problem this time, it was Caelius the madman and his barrier dagger."

The memory of the entire event was still seared into his mind, branded into his thoughts. He could still remember the agony, the feel of the knife twisting into his hand, the electricity scorching through his skin and bone. Gale closed his eyes, and shook his head, taking a deep breath.

"Good thing I'm right handed."

There was a thoughtful look from Marcus as Gale showed him the scar and then went on to explain. Blue eyes closed as he leaned back, tapping pen on clipboard. "I don't think he's a complete madman. Oh a bag of dicks to be sure but..." He pointed at his hand. "Caelius is nothing if not practical. He doesn't hesitate to remove what he sees as useless or burdensome. He also doesn't aim or do things needlessly really. He wanted to make a point with you and in a way which you would not forget. But, he didn't want to render you useless. Nor, risk the potential to render you useless. It strikes me that while you might have not met his expectation..."

He grinned. "You lasted five minutes. You fought him and came out with a hand likely to recover. A non dominant hand. I can't help but think that for a man who prides himself as the lead in intel doesn't make a mistake in what he targets."

Marcus was practically grinning ear to ear. "I think you took more steps forward than you realize."
