There was a lion in front of him.

This was a common occurance, since just about every creature in Gealach's experience was a lion. This one in particular was very, very large. Again, not entirely unexpected, seeing as just about anyone who wasn't one of his siblings or someone else their age was bigger than the black cub. And perhaps to offset the darkness of his fur, this lion was also mostly white. Not everyone in the boy's limited experience was white, but some of them were. So again, not uncommon.

What set the lion before him apart from all the others was that his mother had told him that this lion was his great-grandfather. That meant one thing, and one thing only to little Gealach Scath.

"You're oooooooooold," he informed the big white lion in front of him.

Unyezi was sitting before one of the youngest members of his family, smiling calmly as he watched the little lion assess the situation and company he was in. There were so many generations and so many other families between him and his great grandson, it would have been hard for Unyezi to really see it if it wasn't for the easily recognizable toe pattern Gealach shared with his great grandmother.

"You're right," he agreed when the cub finally spoke, chuckling, "But you know what that means? I'm also reeeeeally smart."

The boy considered this statement. Being old made his great-grandfather really smart? Well, it seemed a reasonable enough conclusion, though Gealach had no real information to base it off of. So he might as well accept it as fact.

"Really? How smart?" the cub asked, staring up at the white lion with big black eyes. He really didn't have much to compare it to, so if his great-grandfather was really smart, he'd be able to explain it!

Well, he ought to have expected that kind of question. It was much simpler than thinking up skill or knowledge-testing questions. And there was no simple way to answer it. There was no real way lions measured intelligence, except perhaps by experience. And Unyezi had lots of that.

"Well, I taught your mother everything she knows," he started, stretching the truth right away because what was the fun in being a grandparent if you couldn't try to take credit for all of your amazing grandchildren? Caritas was a good starting point because Unyezi was sure if anybody seemed smart to the boy, it was his parents.

"And your grandfather," he added, smiling, "And all of his brothers and sisters."

"Really?" The boy's eyes were wide with excitement and awe. His great-grandfather had taught his mother everything she knew? That was amazing! Because his mom was a Midwife and that made her Very Important to the pride and he was very lucky to have her for a mother!

But the old white lion kept listing people he'd taught. It was a lot of people. Gealach hadn't even met most of them yet. So his excitement turned to just plain dumb surprise.

"That's a lot of people." This further supported his earlier statement of his great-grandfather's age.

"That's not even all of them," he said, grinning and puffing out his chest confidently, finally winking at the cub. He could have mentioned Stellaluna, but taking full credit for her was risky when he wasn't supposed to have had any part of her training.. and he could have mentioned two queens, though the cub wouldn't know Alcmene and might doubt Unyezi's influence on Lela- she was as old as him, after all.

"Ask anybody, they'll agree," he said, "I wouldn't lie to you."

Gealach considered this information. A lot of people, and of course his great-grandfather wouldn't lie to him, why would he? Lying was for sillies. That's what his mom had taught him!

Still, what conclusion could the black cub draw from what he'd learned so far?

"You're really really really ooooooooooooold," he informed the big white lion. It, was, after all, the truth.

And they circled back to the original statement that made them discuss the influence the white lion had on several generations, though with an obvious revision. Unyezi chuckled again, reaching out and mussing up the cub's short mane.

"Is that all we're going to talk about?" he asked, nudging him before putting his paw back down in front of him, "What made you decide to hang out with such an old lion instead of your brothers or some other cubs today?"

Gealach made a face as the big, heavy paw descended on his nearly-nonexistent mane and tried to push it off. It was, of course, far too heavy for the cub to move at all.

"Mom brought me!" he accused, glaring at the white lion who had the temerity to mess up his mane. "It was her idea! She said I might learn something."

Psh, as if a cub wanted to learn anything at all! Not unless if it was fun, and so far Great-Grandpa Unyezi was boooooooooooring.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 14, 2012 4:24 pm
"Well, we've established that she brought you to the right guy, then," he said, "Is there anything you wanted to learn about?"

Unyezi had plenty of experience with cubs, he knew there was about equal chances that Gealach would have and need an idea. For a cub Gealach's age, though, he doubted sitting through a verbal lesson would be terribly interesting unless it was something the cub himself brought up. That left only a few useful games.. but that was only if you were being strict about learning something.

The cub cocked his head to one side as he considered the question. His mom had brought him here with the hope that he'd learn something. Great-Grandpa Unyezi was asking if there was something he wanted to learn about. Gealach himself only wanted to learn if it was going to be interesting.

He could ask why the white lion was so old. But that would probably still be boring. Now what could he ask that would be interesting?

"What was Mom like when she was a cub?" the boy asked. Because, supposedly, his mom had been a cub at one point. And therefore his great-grandfather would have seen her and known her and could probably tell him about her!

He grinned. Talking about Caritas was something he already enjoyed and he was sure there were plenty of things to talk about. That was another thing grandparents liked to do, embarrass the younger generation to the even youngest generation.

"Well! Your mom was a touch smaller than you are when she was your age, I'd guess," he said, looking Gealach from head to toe with exaggerated thought and a confident nod, "She wasn't nearly as smart as she is now, kind of bossy if I remember right."

The black cub listened avidly as Unyezi described Caritas as a cub. This was all quite new to Gealach, and he found it fascinating. Mostly the fact that his mother had once been a cub very much like him, except apparently she'd always been bossy. Which didn't really surprise him upon reflection.

But the boy sat at his great-grandfather's feet and listened to all the older lion cared to tell him. After all, Great-Grandpa Unyezi would never lie to him!
