Melvin was moving to the training fields for more training practice and decided to start early in the day while it was not muggy hot as much as it normally was. It also meant he could squeeze in a shower and a nap later if he wanted to without wasting the entire day.
Stretching, he tried to clear his head of the events over the past few days. Rin was still on his mind, along with the minor incident of her petting him. Then there was Rep who, despite his past profile, had proving to be a bit more observant than Melvin cared for at the moment. He had to chalk it up to that gut of his and wondered if distraction would solve any problems.
As he moved, he noticed someone else on the field he hadn't seen before, or so he thought when he saw the wheelchair. He had yet to hear of anyone who had one, and was surprised that anyone who was in one was even on the training fields. His impression was that once you got a certain points, they just let you off missions and let you do office work - a job he wouldn't actually mind.
As he got closer, he was surprised to see who it actually was. "Lance?" His eyes then went to the massive weapon and took a moment before he could name it in his head. A lance. Really? It was almost comical if you thought about it, but he didn't crack a smile just yet.

It felt good to be out on the training fields again. Lance raised his namesake up above his head and held it, focusing on his grip and breath. His feet should have been as far apart as his shoulders, knees slightly bent for a stable stance. When he had lost the use of his legs he had also lost his motivation for practice, falling into a backwards slump of depression. He idly wondered how long it had been, opening his eyes to stare out at the training fields as his weapon quietly answered him. It shouldn't have been a surprise that it had taken him that long to finally get back on his feet -- Lance's jaw set as he shifted his weight, swinging the lance down in a wide sweep. The Mist hunter was becoming used to his wheelchair and the advantages is presented. The momentum of his lance carried him through a half-spin, one he stopped by reaching out with one hand to grab his wheels and quickly spin it around the other way. He would need to speak with the Life technicians again for more power to utilize it fully. Right now if his lance encountered something, he would probably cause a bruise rather than knock them down as he used to. Hearing his name brought him out from his thoughts. Lance lowered the tip of his weapon to the ground, arching an eyebrow as he caught sight of the trainee. "Huh. Never thought I'd see a lifer out here on the field this early. How've you been, Melvin?"

Melvin walked slowly, moving beside the Mist Assistant by a few feet and taking a stance. He never wore a sweater during training as it was much too hot in the jungle, but he did wear a long-sleeve button up that nicely covered his neck.
"I didn't expect a Lead to be out here at all." He admitted, reaching behind his ear to take the red pen, Saliva's unsummoned form, and change it to a gun. "I'm well enough." He wasn't missing an arm after all. The rest was just migraines. "Better than running around giving people roses." He narrowed his eyes at Lance, still wondering about those. "How have.." He glanced at the wheelchair, not sure if that was old or new. "...you been?"

"A lead? Ha!" Lance laughed, shaking his head. "I'm flattered, but I'm just the Assistant. I get to act Lead when Aria's not around, but with portals down, I dunno when that'll be." He ignored the glare Melvin gave when asked about the roses, opting to give the former delivery boy a shrug. "Been well enough, though I don't have any special tasks for you to do or things to deliver at the moment. I'm just out for some fresh air and early morning practice."

Melvin fired once, looking at the wheelchair, at Lance, and then back at the chair. Lance didn't LOOK fine. Was that why he had been in the Infirmary when Melvin first met him? Then again, it could be for a number of things. Damn, he should have just looked at his clipboard like he always did with everyone else. Hmm.
Melvin fired, hitting the dummy on the left side of it's ribs. The green egg splatted and hissing green smoke where it hit.
"I was just wondering because I wasn't sure if that was new or not?" To which he looked at the wheelchair. Yup, a few seconds was long enough to wait till he asked such a question.

"If what was new or not?" Lance asked, watching as the hunter hit a target. "My scruff? Been growing that overnight. Haircut? Same hack-job with a knife as usual. Shirt?" He looked down, examining it. "This one's been around awhile, recently recovered from the depths of my closet." Being a division assistant was nice, even nicer when your division leader was willing to share her large closet with you. Lance was finally able to reach his clothes again, rather than struggle with the one-room-fits-all standard dorms... But Melvin didn't need to know that. "I'm afraid you'll need to be a bit more specific as to what you mean by 'that,'" Lance clarified.

Melvin pressed his lips before clarifying. "Your wheelchair. I didn't see one when you were in the Infirmary." He hadn't, but for all he knew the techs could have put it somewhere where no one would knock it over or where it wouldn't get in the way. There was also the fact he had been nervous a tad bit at meeting a division le - assistant and his eyes hadn't wandered much.
"I don't want to sound blunt but with the way people are getting hurt around here I just had to ask."

Lance grinned. "You didn't see it because they took it away and didn't want me weaseling out of there anytime soon. Otherwise I had this for... About a year?" He shrugged. "Getting injured is part of the job. Surviving past that, now... Now that's a completely separate story." He paused, adding, "And this one is mine. Clarice has built me a couple, but this one... doesn't seem like it'd explode under me. Maybe."

"I see. Have a..friend who just got injured. Lost her arm. She's just starting to learn about surviving, though I don't think she feels there is anything left for her. Pretty much felt like she was as good as dead. You pretty much prove that wrong." To which he gestured at the massive lance he had and how he could still wield it. "Certainly would want you in a dark alleyway at night. Could do more damage than I could." Which was just a bit disheartening that the list of those who could out due him in battle went from teenagers, psychopaths, and those in wheelchairs. The only thing to make him feel better was that he was a Assistant and thus powerful in his own right.
"Care if I ask if it was an accident or from a battle?"

"Ah? Who's your friend?" He inquired, "There's another trainee that's also armless. It's not the end of the world. For some," he quickly amended as his face grew dark. "Otherwise how and why I wound up in this damn thing is none of your business, if I may be so blunt. I don't know you, and I'm not about to go spilling my life's story to you."

Melvin rose his hands up in defense. "I can respect that." He told him, not wanting to poke buttons with a superior but seeing if it was he could press at all. It seemed that was a touchy subject, which no doubt it would be. Sometimes the Lifer liked to test though.
"It's Miss Rin Alder. She lost her in a accident and has been having a hard time with the reality of it. Of course I can't blame her." He tried firing again at a nearby dummy. It hit but just barely. Still, no misses yet. It seemed to be an improvement.
"I've heard plenty of hunters say they don't fear death and it's inevitable, but I don't think they really prepare themselves and think that they can get hurt and live."

So far Melvin had a good instinct. It was likely he would make it to full hunter with little to no setbacks or accidents if he kept it up, Lance thought.
Lance made a mental note of the name, quietly nodding in agreement with the Life trainee's assessment. "Mm. Considering what we're up against, you're lucky if you make it out. And with some divisions... let's just say you're better off if you died. What division is this Miss Rin Alder in?"

"She's Life. I didn't think it would be so bad considering she's not a Sun and doesn't have to swing some massive weapon, but she's pretty sure she's going to be either worthless or killed. Considering how unconventional things are around here, I wasn't too sure myself. I've worked in the Infirmary a lot, but most people come in still in tact if not beat to hell and back." Considering Rin was here longer than him and still wasn't sure, he guessed it wasn't something she had heard about or was familiar with.
He fired and watched a glowing green egg hit straight on the dummies face, sizzling it slightly. A smile broke on the trainees face. Direct hits were few and far between and earned a second of celebration.
"Anything you could tell me to pass on to her? I don't think anyone has any idea what to do or say."

The mention of the Sun division made Lance clench his jaw. He did not make a comment, nor say anything even after Melvin asked his question. "I think for something like this," he said at last, "A reassurance would probably best come from me. As a trainee yourself... You yourself admitted that things are rather unconventional. If she sees things the same way, she most likely won't believe you."
Lance fell silent, thinking. "I don't have a phone anymore, but if she needs someone to talk to I'll be hanging around here all day, should you wish to point her in my direction. Or I can go to her, if she's still in the infirmary."

He smiled at this. "That sounds good. I think she'd need that talk. She's in the Infirmary now and I don't see her leaving any day now. Blood loss and all." He aimed again.
"How did that rose experiment work for you?" He had been wondering what purpose it had been for.
Firing, he just grazed the dummy.
