Ami filed into the lab, bright and early with coffee in hand. The same as every morning. Orders were issued, Ami followed them. Today's orders remained complacently similar to the ones of the day before.
Notebooks in hand, she opened the door to her labspace. Well, not hers, but one that she had staked out as her own. Most people avoided her area, and Ami was quite alright with that. She set down a few of her books, ready for a long day of transcribing and runics.
Eventually, she needed to borrow a book from the reference sections. Ami set her pencil down and stretched, rubbing her eyes and taking a sip from her now near-empty coffee. Out the door, she went to Library C, in search for a cross reference book.
She found her strange acquaintance companion there as well. "Sasha?" Ami said quietly. She didn't want to interrupt whatever the other lifer was doing.

There were some nights were Sasha just couldn't sleep. She'd untangle herself from him and get dressed before making her way to the labs. The cool blue glow of the incandescent lighting, the stark walls, the pristine floors - everything set just so - and in the early morning hours, it was quiet and easy to think, to focus. Just her and the tap of her fingers on the keyboard, or the the scratch of pencil against paper.
Her domain.
It was well into the morning when Sasha went to the reference library, gathering up thick, dusty leather-bound tomes. When Ami called out to her, Sasha turned briefly before moving to settle the hefty pile of books onto a nearby table.
"Ami."
A slight smile ghosted across her lips.
"I haven't seen you for some time."
Not since the lair.

Well if she took the time to acknowledge the greeting, she probably wasn't TOO busy. They hadn't talked for a while, it was true, but then Ami hadn't talked with a lot of people for a while.
"Ah ... yes. I've been a bit preoccupied. I've been doubling my hours, because-" She held her tongue. Sasha didn't need to know, and Junpei was a very need-to-know basis."Ah, just because I suppose. Hard worker and all that."
She grabbed a book of her own and headed to the table. "And you?" Pleasantries weren't always bad. Not with Sasha anyways.

"Keeping busy," was all that Sasha offered to start. Ami had always felt a little difficult to read, for Sasha, at least - and after Zenquest and the woman's unwillingness to share, well. Sasha wasn't sure what to think. It'd been a sharp contrast to the woman who had approached her in the bunkers, seeking someone to talk to, to confide in. Sasha pursed her lips and leaned against the table she'd rested her books on. "Training. Planning, hoping for promotion at some point - you know how it goes." She tilted her head slightly, blue eyes never leaving Ami's face. "A lot changed after we got home." She didn't elaborate.

Ami nodded. "I hope you get promoted soon," she admitted quietly. "I don't think the Doctor will let me." Ami had been a hardworker. She'd kept her stay, but that was it. There was no progress for her, just a desperate cling to the cliffside she hung on.
Of course that was another matter entirely. She let out a long breath and said, "It did change. Where'd you get the ...?" Ami gestured to her own lips, in reference to Sasha's.

"A spar gone a bit awry." Sasha pursed her lips. "Why wouldn't the doctor promote you?"
That seemed like an odd thing to say. "What happened?"

"I'm just not a very sufficient hunter, nor have I ever been," she said with a light smile. "I'm sure you'll get there before me."
It wasn't a completely untrue statement. She really wasn't physically adept. She'd never expected to progress as far as she did. Of course, it bounced around the truth, and avoiding the REAL truth, but that was Ami's choice.
Switching back to Sasha then. "Who were you sparring with that caused that?"

"Rep. He bit me."
She frowned slightly - too much information given, things she hadn't wanted to air. This was Ami, though - and she'd been in the Lair, which made Sasha pause. This was Ami, yes. One of hers. One of the small group that had been trapped and tortured.
Sasha cleared her throat.
"This, too," she continued, lowering the neck of her dark brown turtlenecked sweater just enough for Ami to see the scar that ran laterally across her neck.
"Avoid him if you can. He's dangerous."

Ami tried not to gasp when she saw the scar- that was rude after all- but it was too shocking. An ugly line across Sasha's pretty skin. It would have shocked her more if she didn't have to look at scarred tissue in the mirror every day.
"That's ..." She shook her head, unsure what to say. It wasn't so bad that it was a scar, but that it came from a hunter. "This Rep fellow- that's not right. We don't hurt our own when our numbers are dwindling." She thought to the recently-dead council. Yes, now was definitely not the time for some lunatic to go slashing at hunters.
Of course, Ami didn't know the details. She was only acting on impulse for one of her circle. "What does he look like?"

Sasha was quiet for some time, a thoughtful look on her face. "It doesn't matter, really." Explaining her... relationship with Rep wasn't an easy thing to do. Sometimes it didn't even make sense to her, but when she was around him it was as if a red cloud fogged her rational thinking and -- "Sun hunter," Sasha said softly, brows drawing together. "It was a spar. I lost." Was she defending him? Sasha pressed her lips together.

An eyebrow quirked at Sasha's disposition. If someone left giant scars across her own body, Ami would never let it go like that. Then again, Sasha had always been the nicer one.
"That's not a spar, Sasha," Ami argued. "That's ... demented." When you lost a spar, you didn't get scars. Ami had countless scars, but they were all from halloween monsters or horsemen. Not hunters.
She pursed her lips. "Has it been looked at by a full hunter?"

"I spent a week in the infirmary."
It hadn't been the scars that had kept her there, but the crushing weight of Tracey against her chest.
"There were some broken bones. It wasn't a big deal. I'm fine." It was my turn.
Sasha waved a hand.
"Aside from work, what have you been up to?"

Ami didn't think Sasha was fine at all, but she let it lie. Maybe Sasha's tone would go unnoticed by others, but Ami played the "I'm fine" game daily. She knew when to just leave it alone.
"Mostly helping some of the new trainees. This new bunch is really obnoxious.." She sighed, thinking to Solia, Lex and Taani. Maybe Ami was too harsh on them, but she didn't see much potential in any of them.
She put the ball back in Sasha's court. "How are things with ... Jeremy?" That was her boyfriend's name, right? Jeremy? Or was it Jerome ...

"Jerry. We broke up. I mean, his name is Jeremy, but he never goes by it."
Sasha gave a low hum. Her voice was low.
"He just wasn't what I needed anymore. He wanted to fix me, and I didn't want to be fixed."
She shrugged.
"I'm sorry we haven't talked. Since the lair. I'm here for you if you need me, you know that, hmm?"

Ami nodded. It was sad that Sasha had broken up with Jer-whatever, but being fixed wasn't fun. Ami knew first hand. Of course, she was only getting Sasha's side of the story, but as long as her friend wasn't too upset, she didn't care much about the details.
She nodded. "I know ... I just haven't had anything I want to divulge in. It's hard to talk about, you know?" She smiled lightly. "Ah- I can at least say to watch out for the new life trainee Lex. He's rude. Solia- she's a death friend out of the pods. She won't leave you alone once she starts talking." Ami rubbed her forehead, hearing the shrill voice even now. "Melvin, he's a lifer. Thinks he's the reigning life king, but he can't stand to get a little dirty. Nevada- mist who thinks she's entitled to the world. Incredibly lazy." Ami sighed. "I suppose all I have to talk about is pointless gossip about new trainees." Unfortunately Ami didn't have a nice thing to say about anyone. She was too negative.
She smiled lightly though, appreciating the normality of the conversation. After everything that had happened, Ami needed some normal. "Are you okay? It sounds like the break up was for the best, but it couldn't have been fun to do."
