Melvin was starting to like working in the Infirmary. It wasn't that he was the nurturing type, but it kept him busy. He could check on patients, find out who needed to have lunch or dinner, and grab towels or pillows. It was easy work, but different from the tasks he was given in the Labs. In the labs, he was frustrated because he wanted to do more but wasn't allowed, where here he had no degree or sense of ability to do more than he already was doing which left him feeling productive but not underused.

It also helped that the place was pristine and bleach white most of the time. Sterile and brightly lit. A few sanitation supplies might have gone missing during Melvin's duty work there.

The place was usually rather quiet which made the slightest pickup in gossip more noticeable. He had been moving stock from a sub level up to the Infirmary (light boxes he could manage) and had only heard bits and pieces. Someone got hurt. A woman. Lost a limb. Pretty thing. Another hunter. The details were choppy and those gossiping, already having gone over the story a few times over by the time Melvin passed by, were talking about other passing topics like placing referees in the sparring area and that they didn't pay the Life techs enough in the Infirmary.

By the time he finished the inventory list, he decided to satisfy his own curiosity under the veil of just another working tech and popped in when someone was gossiping to find the room.

Just a peak, a request to see if they were awake and needed anything, and he would be satisfied.

When he found the room, located further away than the other rooms due to injury severity and length of stay, he knocked, opened the door, and looked instead.

What he saw was not what he expected. "Rin?"

Rin shifted and hauled her covers up around herself. She was covered before but ensured no chance of a peek. She turned her head carefully towards the door and forced a false little smile, "O-oh! Hi Melvin, come to visit?" She was a bit more awake this time and watched him keenly. He shouldn't know. It was embarrassing.

"..yeeaahh. I - didn't know you were hurt." He admitted, glancing back at the number on the door. This was the right door he was told. Had he misread the numbers again?

Stepping in, he shut the door, glancing at a few techs who looked back at him, before the door closed with a click. Walking over, he looked at her. She was pale, worn, and he could tell by the machines around her that she wasn't just suffering from a few scratches.

"What happened?"

"Oh. Just a... spar. That's all. Got a bit out of hand. No biggie," she inched the covers all the way up to her chin, "What about you? How are you? What brings you here?"

"I heard. I've been hearing a few things actually." A girl who got terribly injured in a spar with a hunter and a missing arm. His eyes went to the covers before looking back at her. He moved to the front of her bed, watching her.

"Who was the spar with?" He asked, picking up the clipboard from the front of her bed.

"Oh, some new guy.... You wouldn't know him," she lied, "Seriously though, what's up?" As peppy as she tried to sound her voice was hoarse and she looked like s**t. At least she looked like s**t from the chin up, "Why are you reading that?.. Come on... can't a girl have medical privacy?"

He didn't say anything to her, turning a page and checking something. When he read through the messy scrawl, his expression widened and he lowered the clipboard, looking at her and the held up cover. Moving around the bed, he set the clipboard down on the bed and moved to her side. "I heard the techs talking." He reached for the covers. "I thought I had the wrong room. Show me." It wasn't a request.

Rin held on tighter to the covers as he approached, "Show you what? I don't have anything to show." It wasn't technically a lie. Technically there really was nothing to show...

Melvin took the covers in one hand, holding them, but staring at her. "Why are you covering up then?" He asked firmly. He was giving her another chance.

"Please Melvin," Rin pleaded firmly as her grip tightened to white knuckle, "Please don't."

It's bad enough it happened but the fact he seems to have this dark fascination with seeing her injury just... she feels like an experiment shoved under a microscope for inspection. Is it good enough to make grade anymore?

It would have been easy to remove the covers if what was on the files were true. If...if it was gone, her one arm wouldn't hold the covers well enough to hide it. He did want to see. His own curiosity begged for it, wanting to fill in the blank by actually seeing it, to confirm with a image and see the severity for himself, but he released despite his own desires. Instead, he stood there, looking at her.

"Is what it says true?" He asked, his voice softer now as he gestured to the clipboard on the bed.

"What does it say?" She looked relieved as her hold on the covers relaxed. It was effort to hold them so tightly and she couldn't keep it up for the off chance he might sneak attack her.

She didn't want to tell him. Why? Why dodge at every turn? If what it said was true, what they were saying was true, then it wasn't like she could hide it form him when she was released. It was too obvious. Didn't she see that?

He was done fighting with her to say it. His eyes went back to the covers, hoping to catch a glimpse, still wanting to confirm it with his own eyes, but he instead turned to see that there was a chair nearby. "You lost your arm." He told her, moving the chair before sitting. He looked to her, adjusting his glasses a moment.

As much sense as that makes, it doesn't matter to Rin. She was still a wounded animal in a sea of jackals. Just one sign of weakness... just one... and all hopes, dreams, desires... everything she tried so hard to inch towards, gone in an instant. Not that she saw him as a jackal... but still. It was the most unattractive thing in the world she decided.

It was for this reason that she looked rather startled at having it spelled out so simply. She opened her mouth about to point out the fact that yes, he's right... but she clipped her mouth shut. There was a sort of guilt in the whole thing that festered in her gut to the point of nausea.

The fact she couldn't say anything confirmed it more than reading it on paper. He deduced that the one hand she used to hold the covers had been the one that was still well, and he wondered just how much of her arm was missing. Had it been a clean cut or torn painfully off? Was she conscious the entire time or passed out after? How much blood had she lost and just how much magic did they have before she was at risk of dying? Then there was the question of WHO did it and how it went this far?

"It was just a spar." He repeated to her. She was crippled due to just a spar. There had been nothing to prove, no point, no need for this risk, and she lost a limb in the process. He didn't know if he should be more mad at her or the person who took it for their reckless behavior.

"Why didn't you two stop?" They all had shields, could tell when they would break, and it was one of the first things he learned when he started sparring. That when you felt it break, you stopped.
