Present but not RPed: Khathelela, Stellaluna, Lailah K'chol, Baba'nyota; Selene, Fuu.

It would have been ridiculous to say nobody saw this coming. There was a reason the King and Queen of the Mwezi'Johari had approved the idea of a bird keeping an eye on the troublesome lion. His disrespectful words with the future rulers were one thing, his attempt to kill a slave another.. but his general demeanor and attitude were perhaps the most damning. For a while it looked like everything might be OK when he was focused on his cubs but it didn't last and now he seemed too great a risk to keep around. After lengthy discussions with the shaman, a decision had been made and Yareha had been summoned to the royal dens.

Thoth stood out ahead of the others gathered. The small crowd consisted of the Queen, the Shaman and her apprentice. Selene and Fuu were not far, being in the royal den, but they were out of sight and had been told firmly to stay there. With the heiress very pregnant and already too involved in the situation, they decided it was best not to let her speak. Not to mention they did not intend for this to be too public a meeting and too large a crowd would make it harder, nevermind meeting with the three of them should be intimidating enough. When the Head Guard arrived with Yareha, that would be it.

So, gathered together, they waited for Yareha to arrive.

If there was one sight no one in the the Mwezi'Johari ever wanted to see, it was Baba'nyota standing outside your den and asking you, very quietly and very seriously, to come with him. Even Yareha was not foolish enough to try anything around the big one-eyed lion and so he'd told the kids (though as adolescents they were hardly kids anymore) to stay in the den and get some sleep.

He couldn't have said he was surprised by this turn of events. He only hoped that it wasn't a horrible surprise for his son and daughters when they woke up tomorrow morning and he wasn't there.

They walked in silence, white lion behind starry blue, the moonlight reflecting off both Yareha's fur and the stars on Baba'nyota's pelt. And where they passed, he could hear the conversation dying off. The Head Guard wasn't taking a circuitous rout, no they were clearly headed for the center of the pride, and even if they didn't pass many, there were still a lot of lions on the way.

At last they came to the royal dens. The Head Guard took his place and Yareha stood alone, facing the pride's ruling class. Completely alone, he realized, not even Latitare was here. The white lion wondered idly where the spy had gone to when he looked up, on a hunch. Between the gathering of lions and the gibbous moon a lone speck circled.

When Baba'nyota came into view, Thoth stepped back so he was nearer his mate and he waited. When the Head Guard took his place and Yareha was left standing before them, looking to the sky, Thoth managed not to follow his gaze. Whether he was looking to the Great Lion or for the bird he no doubt suspected of having a part in this, it didn't matter.

"Yareha Afaer," he greeted him, his tone sombre, "In the past, your behavior has been cause for serious concern and you have been reprimanded for it. Despite those few exceptions, you've managed to keep yourself out of the spotlight and we've been allowed to overlook you in the day-to-day goings-on of the pride."

Thoth was normally an easy-going lion but there was a limit to what you could handle and the health and safety of the Mwezi'Johari had to be their greatest concern. He wanted to give Yareha a chance to explain himself, ask what he thought he was accomplishing by being the way he was.. but there was no answer he could give that would be good enough. Even a groveling apology would be treated with suspicion and there was no doubt in any of their minds that that would never happen anyway.

"Do you have any idea why we've summoned you tonight?"

Yareha stood steady as Thoth deigned to speak to him at last. Of course, for form's sake, the King had to bring up the fact that this was not the first time he'd been in trouble. And the white lion had few doubts as to where this was going.

So when he was invited to speak, the first thing Yareha did was to stay silent, to bite back the scathing retort that came to mind first. He doubted there was anything he could do to save himself by this time, but it behooved him to not make this any harder on himself than it was going to be. When he could finally control his voice the white lion answered.

"Yes."

Thoth was vaguely impressed the troublesome lion managed not to speak disrespectfully or start an argument now, he had to realize there wasn't much he could do to save himself. His previous punishments were not given in the company of a crowd quite like this, it would be hard to miss the severity of the situation. Still, it didn't sit right feeling surprised that Yareha knew this wasn't the time to start a fight.

"Then there will be no surprises when I ask Latitare to remind us what you have been up to lately," he said, his voice rising so it might carry farther as he glanced up, hoping to summon their primary witness. Yareha would not confess and condemn himself, that was fine. Even if he accepted what was about to happen, he would not go without acknowledging his crimes. This was not just an opportunity to defend himself.

Yareha's eyes widened slightly in surprise before they narrowed again in pain. He knew that Latitare had been there to spy on him, indeed, the bird had admitted it himself ages ago, but despite that they'd still formed a kind of friendship.

To be reminded of where the eagle's ultimate loyalty lay was like claws squeezing his heart. The white lion shut his eyes briefly as the speck above them descended. He did not trust himself to speak now, nor did anyone seem to expect him to.

The bird's attention was peaked by Thoth saying his name aloud and the eagle folded his wings and dove for the earth, snapping them open a mere ten feet above the hard, unyielding surface. He glided over to a nearby rock and perched there, not next to Yareha Afaer and friendship, nor near the King and his jury. Spy for the latter he might be, but Latitare was still not a formal member of the pride.

It was a sad night, that the fears which had led to his...employment...had been realized. He spared a thought for the chicks (though they were all grown up now and many had left not only the nest but also the area) and hoped that those who remained would never end up in his position now.

It was hard to watch Yareha respond to the mention of Latitare and his part in what was happening now. The king and queen had few doubts that their spy would be found out and the secret discovered but for the most part everything had been simple enough. Thoth wasn't lying when he said they had been able to overlook his general behavior but even Latitare knew where the line was. The bird's loyalty, even after getting to know Yareha, was not unnoticed or unappreciated.

"Latitare," he greeted the eagle, his voice softer but his eyes stayed on Yareha, "Could you please remind us what you've seen lately from Yareha?"

The bird in question looked to the King as he was addressed. Nodding sharply he faced forward once more and gathered himself, eyes closed. A prayer to the Goddess of Birds ran through his mind and then Latitare began to speak.

"Yareha Afaer, known to have unwelcomely negative opinions on the importance of the class system in the Mwezi'Johari, was seen consorting with several rogues passing through the area. Most of these interactions could be seen as harmless, if unfortunate, but in one of note he was heard to say, and I quote, that "it is bloody ridiculous that just because one lion is born beneath a full moon and to a certain bloodline we must worship the ground they shat on and another lion born beneath the dark moon must not only worship that ground, but clean it up afterwards." The rogue was seen to laugh and agree before moving on, but Yareha was observed to remain tense and unhappy the rest of the day."

It hurt, not only to condemn the lion that had become something of a friend with his own words, but also to repeat such hurtful and hateful words aloud.

Knowing Latitare was assigned to spy on him wasn't nearly as cruel as hearing his own words, spoken in confidence to one whom he knew wouldn't repeat them to any Mwezi, thrown back in his face. Yes, they were unhappy words, yes they were spiteful. And in this pride, seditious and dangerous.

But hearing the eagle give voice to them was the cruelest part of all.

Yareha wanted to close his own eyes, hide himself from the stern gazes of the King, Queen, Shaman and Head Guard, but that would be cowardly. So even though his eyes burned and his heart ached, he stared them all straight in the eye.

Nobody was happy to hear those words repeated, saying them once was bad enough and this particular group would not be one that cared to be associated with these kinds of thoughts at all. Finally, Thoth looked from Yareha to Latitare.

"Thank you," he said, looking back to Yareha, who seemed decidedly mute on the subject, "Your opinions are not welcome here and yet you have stayed and continually taken advantage of us. You speak out against a class structure and then you use it to free yourself of responsibility when you nearly kill someone beneath you- and for selfish reasons."

Thoth had many opinions on Mazin and every strange thing that had happened with him since he and Selene had become friends, for many different reasons. Despite everything, though, this was the best example of Yareha taking advantage of a system he had no right to take part in if his feelings were so dangerously negative.

"Knowing the content of even one conversation to be so blasphemous makes them all suspicious, and you've seem to have a problem minding the borders," he continued, "You have become too great of a risk."
PostPosted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 3:25 pm

Slate blue eyes narrowed at the mention of Mazin and Yareha's subsequent attack on his cousin. Why did everyone insist on misconstruing that singular event? He couldn't, wouldn't deny that he hated the class system but he had never taken advantage of it and the attack had been totally unrelated. He considered remaining stoically silent, but he couldn't let that single inaccuracy stand.

"I can only deny one thing you've said," the white lion replied. "I did not 'take advantage' of the class structure to attack Mazin - I would have done so even if he had been the King and accepted the responsibility for that action." Indeed, he'd been so jealous of his cousin for winning the lioness he'd loved, he hadn't been able to think straight. The fact that Mazin was a slave had completely slipped his mind at the time.

Not that this admission was likely to endear anyone here to him. Yareha simply wanted to set the record straight.

Having said his piece, Latitare watched in silence. He silently applauded the white lion for having the courage to correct the King, even though Yareha's intent for the attack would make little difference here, and would probably only hurt his cause.

Still, there was something to be said for truthfulness, and the eagle was fully in favor of it.

Thoth's eyes narrowed in return when he argued. They had very different perceptions on how that had played out, then, whether or not Yareha realized how the position of each player in that particular incident affected the final outcome. His expression clearly said he was not going to argue with him about this.

"Whether or not you intended to take advantage of the system is irrelevant to the part it was allowed to play in the outcome," he said, pausing only a few seconds before continuing, "Your presence is no longer welcome here, you are a danger to the physical and spiritual well-being of all of those around you. You will be escorted to the borders by Baba'nyota and you will not come back."

The king would not say it but it was implicit that there would be worse consequences than banishment should the bold lion dare to return to the Mwezi'Johari.

The white lion gazed at the King, his former king and nodded sharply, once. He couldn't honestly say he hadn't expected this outcome, and he knew that there were worse punishments than banishment.

It also went without saying that he had no intention of coming back. If Yareha ever settled down in a pride again, it went without saying that it wouldn't be the Mwezi, the Tianxia or any pride from which he'd met a kind lioness. He'd had enough humiliation in his life, and he'd already given up so much.

He turned to look at Baba'nyota, waiting for the older lion to move.
