Topic of the week for November 11th

I'm sure you've all heard about the incident between Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon. Do you think there should be penalties in order?

Yes there should be penalties: Jeff for intentionally taking out Clint, Clint's crew chief for cussing on tv, Clint's crew members for trying to beat up Jeff, Clint might be for using 'retarded' like he did (I know he lost a good amount of people's respect. Personally, he did go down the liking scale a bit.), he would be if he did get to Jeff.

Gordon snapped, and I think it had as much to do with the frustration of his season as it had the history he had with Bowyer. I'm not excusing his actions at all but I think that's part of why he did what he did.

Gordon's going to take the brunt of the punishment, as he should. I'd be very surprised to see him racing at Homestead.

Well here's what we got:

Nascar
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR announced Monday penalties to three teams that compete in the Sprint Cup Series as a result of rule infractions at Phoenix International Raceway.

Jeff Gordon was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) -- altercation with another competitor on the race track during the race -- and has been fined $100,000, docked 25 championship driver points and put on probation until Dec. 31. Rick Hendrick, owner of the No. 24 car, also has also been penalized with the loss of 25 championship owner points. Alan Gustafson, crew chief of the No. 24 car, was found to be in violation of Section 9-4A (at all events, crew chief assumes responsibility of his driver, car owner and team members) and has been placed on probation until Dec. 31.

Brian Pattie, crew chief of the No. 15 car, violated Sections 12-1 and 9-4A and has been fined $25,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.

Brad Keselowski, driver of the No. 2 car, has been fined $25,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31 for violating Sections 12-1 and 20-6.7A (cars and drivers will not be permitted to carry onboard computers, automated electronic recording devices, electronically actuated devices, power distribution modules, power conditioners, micro-processors, recording devices, electronic digital memory chips, traction control devices, digital readout gauges and the like, even if inoperable or incomplete). Keselowski had a cell phone in his race car.

All of these violations occurred during Sunday's event at PIR.

I'm sorry if Carl Edwards got to race the weekend after what he did to Brad back in 2010 then it's no surprise to me that Jeff gets to race at Homestead. What Carl did was worse BTW.

Also, if that was a violation for Brad there, why didn't get get penalized at the Daytona 500? It was very clear he had it then and had been in his race car for a while. WTF Nascar!?

The only thing I could think of is if they implemented the rule for cell phones after the Daytona 500. Shame. I don't think it was hurting anything.

And IMO I thought the precedent for a suspension on Jeff Gordon occurred with the Kyle Busch/Ron Hornaday situation last year. Granted, that was in the Camping World Truck Series, but still, I think it should have applied here.

I won't cry foul about it though. What's done is done, and Jeff Gordon is probably wishing he had waited until after the race was over.

I am a bit surprised that Clint didn't get fined, though getting knocked out of the championship was by far penalty enough. I'm kinda glad Jeff didn't get suspended for Homestead, I remember how it was after Kurt got suspended and everyone was subdued and quiet on the track. I'm glad to see some passion like this being shown. It's part of what made this sport great.

Well to quote one Brad Keselowski:

Brad Keselowski
Retaliation is out of control in this sport. We've got a bunch of drivers that feel like they have to retaliate or they're being challenged as a man, and that's ridiculous. It's not what this sport needs. I don't think it's good for anybody, and somebody's going to get hurt.

Well, if anyone is an expert on that subject, it's Brad Keselowski.

I can see both sides of this issue. It has to stop from a safety standpoint, though using the safety argument we should stop racing altogether. And if retaliation does stop would it kill the sport from blandness? Retaliation, beating and banging, and fighting are what NASCAR was built on. If you don't believe me, just watch the ad for upcoming races. It's almost all of what they show.

The fine on brad no matter what way you look at is uncalled for. Nascar has made a HUGE push this year for twitter to be apart of its core... and we all know that was what brad was doing... However I feel that this is a hidden fine more for his reaction and 2 minute string of swearing during the post race interview I mean I see what nascar is trying to implement with the ruling that he could be getting an unfair advantage...they for some reason will not become like the IRL, F1, and almost every major motorsport and have tech inside the car itself... however..how much info could he really be getting through his phone... and I HIGHLY doubt he had any tech device through his phone that would change any function of the car. Sadly Brad does not have a turbo speed app on his phone for his car... Jimmie has it.
