It hadn't been such a easy day for the little stallion, not an easy day at all. It was one thing to be on a journey to one's herdlands, another to be the stickler he was for worrying about the love which had come into his life...it was even still sane when he found out he was going to be a father. Yet now...now he ran for his very life, having demanded Uhra run the distance back to the herd and hopefully get help. Even if she didn't...even if he was going to be struck down; one couldn't say he didn't do one amazing thing before he died.
He insured that both she, and those unborn foals would have a home like no other.
However, bittersweet thoughts aside he yelped as he shifted hard to the right to dodge an attack from behind. Slipping against the dirt he continued to race forward; having gone so far down the hill he'd gotten out of the snow. Heaving and feeling his legs like they would com-bust at any moment, he knew his body was giving out fast. Just a little further....a little more...
Snarling and snapping her teeth at what would have been Adom's hind leg, the mare was more than just irritated, she was downright furious at this point. Driven by hunger and the insanity which often plagued unikalona of her kind she powered on after the Usdia, having forgotten all about his mate which had run off in some direction. Her intent was to kill the little cretin for calling her what he did and make him suffer to no end.
However, unlike the usual situations she ran into, she was having a difficult time catching the dwarfed stallion. He may have been runty and small, but his intelligence saved him still from being torn bit to bit.
Flapping her wings to gain momentum, she raced after him still, and as she approached the mare smirked as she suddenly saw the stallion's one leg hit a hole in the path and down he went; skidding into the dirt with a cry of pain as his leg had probably been twisted in the process. Finally! With a bloodthirsty laugh emitting from her lips she leaped at his fallen frame, seeing the fear in his eyes as she was ready to bite into sweet, delicious flesh.
"NO!" Darius roared out, he wasn't going to let that happen as the large brute tore through the foliage and intersected the mare before she could lay a fang on his brother; knocking her roughly away with his body as he too stumbled to catch his footing with his wings. As the mare hissed in pain and was quickly getting up to her hooves again, Darius was quick to back up till he was standing over Adom's fallen frame.
"Darius will not let you hurt my brother!" He growled, his eyes hardened uncharacteristically, baring his own set of impressive jowls to the mare who didn't hesitate to flash them back as she approached slowly, cautiously. Flaring his wings out with his tail thrashing behind, Darius was by no means a trained fighter. In fact, the docile giant while liking to chase things...never wanted to hurt anyone.
However...at the thought of anyone having any kind of intent to harm family...HIS family...it brought out raw instincts he'd never faced before. As Raven approached though, calculating her next move, Darius raised his head and let out a crystal clear and daunting howl; hopefully help would come. He wasn't sure how he was going to try and fight the mare while protecting Adom who was drifting in and out of consciousness.
Cuauhcoatl swore softly to himself as he swept through the air, flapping and gliding as he viewed the world below, squinting slightly as he stalled slightly with a flapping of wings, trying to find the location where they had come from.. The snow was heavier at the elevated altitude of the foothills leading into the steep and craggy mountains to the north.
The world below seemed like specks of darkness on the snow below in the fading light, the Angeni almost stopping to land when a small deer bound away as it was startled by his flight. The Angeni swore softly flaring his wings and taking up to the air again, his heart pounding in his chest with anxiety, practically growling as he spoke and hunted from the skies for his two endangered sons,"Come on, where are you?
A distant howl pricked his ears, and Cuauhcoatl's voice caught in his throat before he let out a sharp shrieking whinny in response, letting the other know he was heard. There! He took off towards the direction of the sound, silently giving a prayer to the spirits that watched over them, I'm coming. Just hold out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The howl reached Zyanya as well, the mare snapped out of her meditative and slow movements, having been working on a form of Equine combat, doing the motions smoothly and slowly as if practicing Tai Chi to develop the muscle memory necessary for the actions.
However the howl sent shivers down her spine as she spread her wings, bunching her muscles to kick herself into the air. Both angeni were on their way towards the fight as swiftly as possible.
However Darius would have to stand his ground against the Kalona long enough to give them a chance to arrive.
Bracing for impact of teeth into his flesh as he flinched and closed his eyes, feeling this was the end, he was most surprised when it wasn't. Snapping his eyes open and looking as the large black mass ripped into the scene; bowling over the mare and rearing back to stand over him. Eyes wide he gaped at the familiar form of Darius, he'd never been fond of the mutant by any stretch of the imagination...but this...he was so greatful to see him in this moment. "Darius." He groaned, his leg aching something fierce as he was unable to get up.
Looking over to see the mare approach once again, he felt his body curl up to be as small as could be. Even under hoof of Darius how could he fend and protect? It dawned on him that if Darius was here, Uhra must have gotten back to the herd land. Uhra....she was safe. His eyes dociled, clouding over slightly in relief; whatever the outcome, he'd succeeded. Slowly, the exhaustion of his body and the pain from his twisted leg succumbed him to slumber, unable to remain in the world of consciousness any longer.
Struggling to get her body off the ground, enraged eyes locked in the large but lanky stallion. "You..." She hissed, saliva dripping from her fangs as she found her hooves again and approached the pair. "You will regret that..." So what if the stallion had come to protect the little wretch, she would down them both. The little one would make an excellent snack, while the large one...he was mutant. His powers would be delicious, devouring him would be such a delight.
As the quiet words were exchanged between what she could clue in were brothers from the male's prior words. She waited for a moment where the large brute's eyes moved down to the now passed out little stallion before she flew forward in her bounds, jaws outstretched as she clamped down on his shoulder. Blood immediately seeped into her mouth as her wings came down to try and scratch at his sides with the claw'ed joint. Her eyes remained ever alet to his movements, his retaliation. Immediately she could tell he wasn't much of a fighter; and as her lips twisted into a smirk she knew she'd won this fight.
His heart raced, more than it ever had the first time Cuauh had taught him to fly...Xochi to hunt...this was different. True in many eyes he was a monster, something bred from darkness given his traits and unknown family history. However, he felt little need to fight, all he wanted in life was family and had been blessed with it. He was still very much a trainee when it came to even hunting...how on earth was he to defend from such a seasoned hunter and killer? His ears flicked, trying to watch the sound of wing beats which could only mean his family was on the way.
When Darius had picked up the small voice of Adom he looked down without hesitation, eyes worrisome as his brother passed into the realm of unconsciousness. "Adom.." He breathed before realizing his foolishness as teeth sunk into his shoulder in the blink of an eye. Letting out a cry he pushed forward on her, keeping her hooves away from Adom as blood dripped down his shoulder from her lips. Hissing in pain he used his wings to stretch forth and slam down on her head, trying to get her to release him. "Let go!" He growled, lowering his head to bluntly strike against her neck, finally getting her to release and have her jump back. Grimace crossing his face from the pain he stomped his hoof and snapped his jaws. Once more she charged forth, intent on knocking him back; but he lowered his body a little and held his ground. In a flury of wings and hooves Darius used his size and reared up, giving her a good shot to the side with his front hoof. Earning a hiss from the mare and a flash of danger in her eyes she was too quick to retort, storming forward and jabbing her horn towards his open chest.
With panic in his eyes he twisted his chest and flapped his wings hard to gain some kind of momentum to move out of the way but it failed. Instead of stabbing him she turned her horn away, pushing him over with her neck as he barely missed crushing Adom with his body. With a hoarse gasp he immediately tucked his wings out of harms way when his body hit the ground. Without a moment to spare the mare had lunged down to take a lethal bite at Adom when Darius did the only thing he could do when he was on the ground struggling to even get up in time. He spread his wing out, the proximity he'd fallen was just enough to cover Adom and instead of biting into his jugular the mare bit into one of the flesh and bone of his wing's frame. Gritting his teeth with a deep whine of pain as his ears were met with the cruel laugh of the mare, trying to crush the bone of his wings if it wasn't for its awkward position in her jaws she would have already. "You...won't succeed!" Darius breathed out, despite the pain of her pulling back and the pressure of her bite; he would hold out. There was a lot of him, and he liked to think it was making a pretty good shield despite it all.
Zyanya was the first to arrive, having been closer to the location at the get go, the massive angeni gliding down until she was close enough to the ground to land right into a powerful run, her wings snapping shut as she plowed right into the Kalona at full speed, her weak, second generation half-blooded aura of light flaring up as strong as she could, forcing the Kalona away from her injured older siblings, plowing over the mare and sending her rolling head over hills
Sweeping around she turned broadly to get between the mare and her brothers slowing down as she neared them and turned to face the mare once more, legs braced wide, muscles taught and ready for action, "I'll keep her off of you -- you try to get Adom home... Econ should be able to help heal both of your wounds but you need to try and get Adom there. Quickly."
Before Darius could try and figure out what he was going to do to free himself and get Adom away from this crazed attacker his prayers had been answered by the blured form of familiar spots. Looking up as he barely winced at her teeth being dragged away from his wing as the Kalona's body it the ground hard; Darius erupted in a relieved smile. "Zyanya..." While to some it may have been disheartening to have his younger sibling be the better fighter than he that was not the case for the lumbering male, Darius was better as the shield, and a shoulder than he was a brazen warrior of justice.
He had faith Zyanya would be the victor, beside, this was what she trained for so vigorously.
"Alright..." He nodded and shuffled his boy to get beside the small usdia, using his good wing and head to try and push his brother onto his back but was having some difficulty; not used to the concept to get someone onto his back who was passed out. It wasn't as easy as Mother and Father made it..but mother was never unconscious either. The more he tried the more awkward Adom was slipping against his side. Even with trying to use his mouth as gently as he could to pull him up it just wasn't working, he kept glancing to make sure Raven wasn't near, but his efforts were getting more frantic and unsuccessful the more he tried to hurry to get them both to safety and help.
The world tumbled as the mare was sure she was the victor, but the addition to this new player sent her body into the ground - hard. Skidding back some feet as flesh raked against the terrain she stuck out her legs so she stopped; her head whipping around with death in her eyes as she caught sight of the Angeni. Snorting loudly she rose to her hooves, a little wobbly and disorientated from the impact but still determined as ever.
"That was a lucky shot, you wretch." The mare seethed, her tail flicking back and forth wildly as the spade sliced through the air. "I'll enjoy chewing on your bones, instead." Although they were much different, the wings brought back images of Airlia, the mare who she really had a death grudge against. This one was no mutant, and seemed to be a halfbreed of some sort...but it didn't matter.
What was a meal but flesh and blood of whatever the breed it came from.
It took little time as the mare lunged towards Zyanya, hoping to impact any open flesh she could get, wings stretched out to try and slash at her just like she'd lunged at Darius before. Unknown of what was on its way. "Come here pretty!"
The large mare held her ground, watching her attackers movements with calculated intent. Her mind wizzed with calculations and trajectories and, waiting for the best possible moment, reared, using the other mares own momentum against her as she plowed her hooves forward, smashing them down onto her shoulders, cracking the scapula bones on either side.
Zyanya skirted to the side, using her arms against the neck of the mare to twist slightly, forcing her to tumble and skid down the shallow hillside to the side. She then glanced back at Darius, her eyes darting around to figure out a solution as she kept her attention mostly on the attacking mare. Her eyes widening she whistled slightly, "Darius! Over there -- there's a large evergreen branch to your right that's been broken off the tree from the last snowfall. If you can get Adom onto the greenery you can use it to drag him to safety."
Why wasn't this working! His teeth gritted in frustration, for someone with such a lumbering frame he didn't want to hurt his brother...but at the same time it was rather difficult to be gentle with an unconscious body. Perking his ears up at the whistle his eyes swept over to the branch his sister mentioned. Well...that was definitely a much easier solution! "Right!" He stumbled a little as he tried to get up with the sharp pain in his shoulder but kept his momentum enough to balance himself out. Dashing to the branch he grabbed the base of the branch in his jaws, pulling it back over to his fallen brother.
This time it was fairly easy, using his snout to roll his body onto the thickest part of the branch. Looking up to Zyanya and the unikalona engage in battle he made a snort in a moment of uncharacteristic depth in his voice. "Make her realize...what she's done." He said no more, as he had a more important job; but left the hurt he felt by seeing one of his own in such a state with her to bare. Grabbing the branch he used his good wing to gently hold him against the greenery, taking off in a hurried walk as fast as he could back to the safety and protection of the herd lands.
Letting out a pained bellow into the air as more of a shriek the voices in her head screamed at such an impact, hearing the crack of her own bones in her ear drums before meeting the dirt once more; not even a drop of blood in her own mouth. Frantically her mind raced to find some sort of explanation of her exceeding failure, her eyes twitching in an almost possessed manner as her spiraling sanity was giving away to her own inner breed's demons.
Sorcery!
Powers!
Delicious powers!
I must have them!
Raven once more rose to her hooves, her legs wobbling from her body's aches and wounds, her sanity's resolve slowly fading into her madness' adrenaline. Cackling in a deranged and eerie sound as if to her wasn't even coming from her own lips she tilted her head and stared at Zyanya....envisioning Airlia in her place which drove her deeper into her own mind. "I'll have you!" She laughed, manically, "I'll have you!" She once again charged, different than last time as if she had no plan of attack in her charge, waiting for her insanity to spontaneously act on its own before her body would heed the instructions. Once close enough swiping outward with her horn, which allowed her body to aim her in motion spade to hopefully strike at angeni flesh. In her flight or fight back-falling instinct...it was clear what was left of her was clawing at fight no matter the repercussions to her body.
As the mad mare neared the end of her charge, a figure, glowing with a fierce light that comforted those who were fighting for their lives but seemed like a blinding stab to the darkness within the crazed Kalonacorn, landed heavily from a dive, just barely having cleared Raven's body as it flew over, four wings flaired and front legs outstretched, back legs so tightly curled that it made the figure look more like a massive mutated bird than equine in nature. Front legs bent slightly to take impact as the body coiled on itself. The scene seemed to be in slow motion as snow lifted into the air from the impact, the stallion turning his head to meet her gaze with a fierce look of anger and determination in his intelligent eyes.
Then the coil released with a burst of power and a sickening sound of breaking ribs as Cuauhcoatl kicked back in a full body bucking kick, one hoof hitting solidly against the abdomen while the other glanced the skull -- the only thing that kept the blow from crushing the mares head or snapping her neck as approximately 2000 pounds of Clydesdale sized Angeni sent the mare tumbling like a rag doll away from his loved ones.
The sight he had seen while flying into the clearing had left Cuauhcoatl enraged -- his eldest son lay prone, dragged away by his second eldest who was clearly injured as well, one of his two daughters who remained with them threatened by a rabid rush. And the result was a crumpled heap of wings and tails, slumped and no longer any sort of threat.
Realizing she was not moving any time soon, he let out a slow grunt and slid into the snow, legs sprawled and wings drooped and quivering, T-that was a hard landing...
Zyanya let released her breath with a catch, having been caught off guard by her father's arrival and the fierce actions he had taken to dispose of the threat she had faced, "Tahtli*..."
She moved over to Cuauhcoatl, who landed on his belly from his kick, legs having been shaking too much from the landing to keep holding him up, his light still blazing like the sun and his breath rapid from his flight and adrenaline, touching her nose lightly to his brow, making sure he was all right, "Tahtli, thank you.. Darius!"
Zyanya took another look at the prone mare before rushing over to her injured brother, crouching low beside the branch and spreading her wing to try and scoop Adom up, "Help me get Adom onto my back -- I can hold him and get him to Econ faster... Father's here. He... I think he might have killed her."
They hadn't gotten too far thanks to the awkward way Darius had to try and drag the branch which was really very low to the ground thanks to his very tall; but still lean features. This wasn't going to deter him though; as he'd moved on uphill as fast as he could go without losing the usdia on the branch. Thankfully when a voice reached his ears he looked back to see Zyanya rushing into view and crouched down beside the branch he'd let go of after hearing her.
"Darius can do that..." The stallion wasted no time to use his free wing and the side of his face roll and push Adom's body onto his sister's wing. From there gently sliding him and positioning each of his legs on either side of the body as a little extra anchorage. Already his infectious smile stretched on his toothy maw, he knew it would be alright now; between even Zyanya and He...there was no one which could take on two Angeni of that caliber! "I hope so..." Darius muttered softly, although he didn't really wish death on anyone he was hurt and angry at her choice of life. There were plenty of acceptable prey out there for those who needed meat...but her...she did it out of pleasure, and that just wasn't okay in his books. "Go, he's on. I'll go back for Dad... and follow suit shortly." Darius nodded and slowly made his way back towards the clearing.
Arriving back at the scene took only a matter of minutes with his cautious pace to keep from over exerting himself and his condition. He knew he was alright, and little would change in his mind from heading there now and waiting a little but to head back with Cuauhcoatl. Besides, Econ could focus, possibly be finished with Adom by the time he arrived than trying to heal two individuals at once. Watching the still form of the unikalona aside from some shallow breathing he made his way over to the laying Cuauhcoatl. "You really gave her a whollop, didn't you dad?" Darius smiled softly, lowering his head down so he could be closer to eye level with him till he was able to stand again. "You alright..?"
Watching Darius head back for their father, Zyanya released a long sigh of relief and tension, before folding her wings tight across Adom, building from a walk to a run gently as to prevent him from slipping off, unable to fly without a basket to keep him from slipping off without him being able to hold on from his exhaustion and pain rendered unconsciousness in any way on lift off and thus needing all four wings to hold him in place.
She was heading home with the most precious of cargo as snow began to fall lightly, leaving the scene behind her in a swirl of kicked up snow.
--------
Cuauhcoatl grunted slightly, shifting his legs to attempt to lift himself back onto his legs, "I-I think I'm all right, Darius. T-thank you."
The angeni slowly rose, shaking the snow sticking to his sweat off. He shook his legs one at a time, making sure none were permanently damaged, flinching slightly at his left front leg, lifting it to find a rock lodged into his the fleshy groove of the frog in his hoof. Nipping the rock out of the slightly more tender area he gently set his foot down, putting his weight on it and nodding, "I appear to be in one piece. Just a little scuffed up. You however -- we need to get you to a healer" He spread his wings and wrapped both of them gently across Darius's back, careful not to hit his injured wing but instead gently slide under it to give it support, "..you made me proud today, Son. But then you make me proud every day..."
"Thank goodness..." Darius let out his own little sigh, feeling the adrenaline from the skirmish finally drawing away from his body now that everyone seemed to be okay. As for the mare, he wasn't sure if she would get up again, but he knew she wouldn't be back at any rate so the worry was gone. Watching as his father had but a rock in his hoof he felt his tail away in a slow wag, simply amazed as he always was towards the stallion before him.
It was hard for him not to be, for if it wasn't for him and Xochi who knew where he would have ended up by now.
Adverting his eyes a moment as he felt his cheeks heat up from such a wonderful compliment he turned his head a little and pressed his own forehead against the side of his neck; not wanting to put any strain on his wing to return the gesture. "Thank you Dad...I'm just glad everyone is okay, and you and Zyanya were here. It could have been different if you both hadn't." Very different....as he realized that perhaps it wouldn't hurt to learn some kind of combat - as he couldn't rely on his hunting skills to ward off attackers like that. However, that was something for another day. "Lets go home, Mom has to be worried sick." The mutant chuckled, ready to head back to the herd lands at his father's side.
