It was like the calm before the storm as Devith watched his rider work. Even as the tears dripped silently down she wiped them away hardening her face and her heart as she went inside. Slowly as to not awake the others she got dressed. They could call to Devith if they needed to find her and then without another word she slipped away.

The two of them walked in silence. There was no destination except simply to be away as they trekked into the nearby jungle heading deeper and deeper and Devith didn't say a thing. Simply let Hekate walk on hand resting on his hide as she kept her eyes in front of her her thoughts silent, but their bond roiled and wreaked with the force of his rider's agony even if she tried to be strong.

Hekate always tried to be strong. It was something Devith respected her for and he knew the reason they were leaving. Hekate didn't want the world even less the Weyr and her few friends to see her cry. Even when she broke down around people she always hid her face or excused herself before she finally shattered. The world wasn't allowed to see Hekate cry.

Only he was and Devith would never tell~

Hekate couldn't stand the Weyr. All she wanted was to be away. To leap onto Devith's back and fly until all they could see was Horizon. The news of who caught the Queen would be all over the Weyr before breakfast was even served and she couldn't~ She just couldn't go back there. Not right now.

She knew what she'd go back to. Pitying stares, constant inquiries if she was ok and nothing, but headshakes and frowns that screamed 'I told you so.' As she held her vigil waiting for him. He wouldn't be back for a while. Even if he did come back and that was suspect.

Why did she have to care about him!? Why did she have to go and let her guard down and let him in! Why!? When did she grow so weak as to allow a man like him to hurt her like this!?

Why~ And Hekate fell Devith letting out a startled bugle of worry as he whirled in his tracks as Hekate hit the ground having grown inattentive in her thoughts, her foot catching a root.

Slowly Hekate lifted her head her cheeks dirty and palms skinned from trying to catch herself. Mine? Devith crooned his eyes bright with worry as he lowered his head to check her over gently.

"I'm ok Devith." She answered, but she wasn't as Hekate pushed herself up her body heaving under the force of her own emotion as tears once more pricked her eyes as she forced herself to her feet.

She had to get up. She always got up. She couldn't be beaten like this. What had she become to let Z'fer of all people go and break her heart? And like that the tears began to fall a new as Devith rested his head low to nuzzle her Hekate's arms reaching out to bury her face against his head.

Devith crooned low doing his best to curl around her without jostling his rider. I am here Mine. I will always be here. I will never leave you for the likes of anyone. I will never fly a green or a gold. There is no female in my eyes as glorious as you so what need have I for flights. You are all I will ever need. Devith assured her his tone a gentle rumble warm with his love and worry in her mind. She could cry, she needed to cry, to mourn. He didn't mind. He never minded, not even the muddy hand prints that now marred his hide.

"Devith~" Hekate sobbed hugging him tight as she burried her face against his head tears streaming down her cheeks and wetting his silver hide even as he tried to comfort her. "I don't understand! WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!" She screamed out in agony releasing him to slam her fists into the ground venting her pain uncaring if she got dirt in her already skinned up hands. It hurt! It hurt, but at least physical pain she knew how to deal with. It was real. It was solid and it meant you were still alive to keep fighting further.

I don't know Mine.
Devith answered honestly gently nuzzling his rider's hair even as she gasped and sobbed and shook her fingernails digging into the dirt.

She hurt and all Hekate wanted to do was lash out, to fight, to rise above this screaming that she wouldn't be beaten. But this wasn't like the adversity she'd faced before. She could lash out and fight then men who had tried to lay their hands on her when she'd been a street dancer. She could fight the whers and their handlers along with the traitors. She could work to rebuild the Weyr, but no one was at fault here.

Not even that horrible goldrider from Benden though Hekate was loathe to admit it. There was no one for her to fight and she'd be betweened before she lashed out at Devith. She was simply left alone to wallow in her own pain and agony left to count down the minutes with a bleeding raw open heart until Z'fer either chose to come to her or stay with that flirt of a Benden Queen.

"I hate her!" Hekate hissed stabbing her hand into the ground where she sat on her knees. "I hate her! I hate Benden!" She screamed her voice breaking with pain and sobs her vision too gone from tears to see anything, but the silver outline of Devith as he spread his wings to shield her from the world. "I hate them all! Why did they have to come here! Why do they have to take him! Why!" She screamed shaking her head and lifting her mud and bloodstained hands to hold her head doubling over as she sobbed.

Mine! Your hands~ Devith crooned in concern his eyes bright with yellow and gray as Hekate shook her head.

"It doesn't matter I won't be holding harness reins anytime soon anyway." Hekate replied her voice small and broken. "None of it matters. Look at what all my work and effort has gotten me Devith~" She sobbed holding a bloody hand up to him.

"An empire of dirt and blood. What am I Devith?" Hekate asked hanging her head as she beat her fists into the ground once more staring at the torn grass and mud between her fingers.

"They'll turn on us sooner or later. Why do we stay? Why!?" She screamed her voice hoarse as her throat locked up from the pain. You are my rider and tell me Mine. Why do we stay? Devith asked gently hsi tone soft and loving and absolute in his answer.

Hekate could have answered a million things. They stayed because Devith couldn't fly or between yet. They stayed because this naive Weyr needed them. They stayed because Dizzian and Courath would be heart broken if they left. They stayed because they needed the Weyr's resources to care for Devith and the flits. They stayed because it gave them opportunity and work. However while there were a million reasons there was only one in the forefront of Hekate's mind and heart. They stayed~ "Because I love him." Hekate admitted though it hurt her pride and heart more to say it then anything had before.

And because of that Devith stayed and put up with the stupid bronze two-legger who couldn't see a good thing if it punched him the face. He stayed because for all his pride and vanity he valued his rider's happiness over it all.

The two sat like that for a long time, the only sound that of the jungle and Hekate's tears as she sobbed and finally gave in and leaned into Devith's neck. Together the lay there uncaring of the mud, uncaring of the blood, uncaring of anything, but each other. Sure the two probably looked like a horrible mess. Hekate had no doubt Dizzian would probably have a heart attack when they came back. Not to mention she'd probably have to have the healers look at her hands, but it didn't matter. None of it mattered in that moment where emotions ran high and tears flowed and dragon and rider clung together to weather out the pain.

Finally Hekate lifted her head. "We have to go back." She spoke her voice barely a whisper having screamed herself hoarse in her pain. We will wait for him and he will come. Devith assured her slowly getting up and letting Hekate lean into him for support as the two began the slow trudge back to their weyr.

And what if he doesn't? Hekate asked in thought to spare her raw throat her voice.

Then you'll still have me
