Nikiana & Odell
Aimes Market
Late morning
Still chilly, but warming up

Niki stifled a yawn as she sat at her booth, her knit and woven goods displayed on the table. She'd gotten up very early that morning to make the first ferry to Aimes and set up her booth before the early morning crowd. That rush was finally over and she was enjoying the slight break as the crowd thinned some.

She was very glad she's worked her fingers to the bone over the past few weeks as she had already sold a good number of her wares. The bolts of woolen fabric had been a big hit for making winter coats and she only had a few left.

Wrapped in a shawl against the early morning chill that was finally fading, Niki refilled the mug she was using as a hand warmer. Not a big coffee drinker, she had brought along a thermos of plain hot water to hold and keep her fingers nimble. If the crowd slowed enough, she had yarn and needles with her, though she hated to bring them out this early as some customers seemed to take that as being ignored. So, for now, she merely sat and tried to stay warm and sell lots of stuff.

Odell made sure his coat was properly buttoned before leaving the studio for a morning walk. He enjoyed the mornings as it was quieter with less people about. In one hand was his violin case, which he always had with him. He decided to walk towards the market to see the new wares. He liked the open air market as it allowed him to purchase items more lovingly made than in bigger shops.

The blue haired musician shivered a bit in the cool air. He should have brought a scarf but alas he had used his only one to contain a certain strange bottle in his home. Perhaps he could find one at the market. Glancing around as he entered the open area he saw several shops that offered a scarf but few looked to his taste. Despite his appearance Odell did prefer a personal touch. Then he saw a smaller stand with some lovely knitted scarves. Ah perfect. The tall gentleman walked over and gave the woman behind the stall a polite bow.

"Good afternoon, m'lady. I find myself in need of a scarf and yours do look lovely and warm. How much are they?"

Niki set the mug down as a potential customer came closer, putting on a friendly smile. "Hello," she said, returning the greeting, unable to help the slight blush that appeared on her face at the bow in her direction. "Oh, well," she quickly went through the various scarves that she had, giving the prices as she pointed them out. Most were simple ribbed scarves, which were the cheapest of the group. She also had a few lacy scarves that she really didn't think the man would want, at least not for himself, and a few more intricate cabled scarves as well. Many were in neutral tones, though several of the lacy ones and some of the others as well had been dyed various colors.

Her little pricing speech done, she leaned back once more to allow the man room to browse without her appearing to be hovering over him. As he started to look, though, she noticed the violin case and spoke before she could stop herself. "Oh, you play?" The violin was something she would love to learn, but had never had the time to learn and still really didn't. It would be nice, though. She could play a guitar half decently, but her work and reading in what spare time she did have took up her time completely.

Odell listened as the woman gave her prices and showed him her wares. All looked handmade, of good quality by somoene who enjoyed their work. Those were the best and tended to last the longest. Pride in your work lead to good work. He chose one of the ribbed scarves, they were warmer even if they did bulge around the neck a bit. He also bought a cabled one for more formal occations.

He looked up with a smile as the woman asked of his instrument, "Yes I do. I am a local performer and occational tutor." He usually got this question when carrying his case. The idea that someone could master a musical instrument seemed to mystify peolpe at times. But he knew not all were blessed with natural talent and for some no amount of practice would improve them. So he never took offense or annoyance with such a question, he freely shared his love of music. "Do you play or do you enjoy listening?"

Niki was delighted to make two sells, though she tried not to show it too much. Don't need to be a crazy lady here! She stowed the money away, listening as he explained the case. "Oh, that sounds nice! I, well, I can sort of play guitar, but the calluses tend to snag on my yarn and I just don't have much time to practice. I do love to listen, though."

One of the few newer gadgets that she did break down and buy was a radio. She'd often turn it on while working to listen to music and often hum along. While she didn't like her singing voice, she wasn't terrible.

Odell was gratefull for the warm scarf as he wrapped it around his neck. It was soft, not itchy in the slightest, and kept warmth in excellently. The grey eyed man listened as the woman professed a minor skill in the guitar even though it could work against her more practical income. He nodded, undestanding how calluses could cause problems. He had several his self.

"Well if you like to listen I do not mind playing a bit. I enjoy playing outside and there are few people around who it would bother," he smiled softly. Odell really did enjoy playing, especially when he wasn't asked. When offered, he enjoyed it immensely; but he never insisted on playing or pushed his skill on other's ears. That was not a proper musician's place. One should give a small offer or wait to be asked.

"Oh really? I mean, if you don't mind and have the time... I'd hate to disrupt your plans or something..." Nikiana trailed off, both eager to hear this man play and worried that she'd be encroaching upon his generosity, even if he'd offered.

On the upside, if he played at her booth, it might draw some other customers over. She glanced back up at the man. "If you have the time, I would love to hear you play." There, that was much better than the sputtering of word vomit that had emerged when he'd first offered. There had only been a moment between the two utterances, but she'd felt uncomfortable until managing a better reply.

Odell nodded with a smile. He didn't mind to play, and the warm scarf was putting him in a more relaxed mood. He stood a bit away from her booth, so as not to impede others in the market, and opened his case. The violin was a masterwork, one he had saved for nearly a year to buy. It was beautifully crafted and could sing the sweetest notes.

Odell gave it a quick tune before putting it to his chin. He began to play a beautiful piece that the cold morning had inspired in him. His fingers danced over the strings as his bow slid across them; combo of sound and movement. His eyes were closed as he played from sheer memory of movement. It was one of his favorite pieces for relaxing.

A small crowd gathered, only a few people but still enough to marvel at the man's talent. He slowly finished to their soft applause, a few commenting on his skill before he bowed and put away the instrument. He turned to Niki, "I hope you enjoyed it."

Niki watched as he got the instrument out and began tuning, grinning as she remembered the frustrations of tuning the guitar. Seemed it always went out of tune if it sat for any period of time! But then, the music started and all her thoughts were chased away as she was caught up in the lovely tune.

She barely noticed the small crowd gathering until Odell finished and they all began to applaud. Niki joined in, a huge grin on her face as he turned to her. "Oh very much. Thank you."

Oh if only she could play like that! Such a lovely sound~
