User Image Meadowsnip could have been jealous of the expectant mother she was tending to, but instead she felt nothing but joy in her bosom. She couldn't wait for all those kittens to be born. She loved baby kittens so much it was almost sickening. To her, babies were a miraculous event and they needed to be doted on groomed for hours on end and told stories and fed the softest of grasses. She loved the way their chubby little cheeks puffed up with their first bite of grass and how they spent minutes just gnawing on it.

This Marli she tended to, Sugar, could not have had a better aid. Meadowsnip spent most of the morning shredding up the softest grass she could carry and making a mulchy bed to rest on. She brought in small acorn caps of water and nice tender lettuce leaves.

"So, it should be any day now, right?" She asked in her lightest voice. "What do you think you're going to get?" Bobkittens was her favourite game. Instead of bobstones and guessing about stones, she played her version and guessed the gender, number and colors of the kittens that would be arriving. "I am going to wager some watercress on two does and a buck."

Sugarcane was honestly more than pleased with her choice in aid during this time. Meadowslip was every bit as gentle as others had said she would be. Sugar was honestly amazed at this; she had expected she would be left with a horrid someone who wouldn’t be at all what she was looking for. Perhaps it was because she was used to having her hopes dashed, or maybe because as of late nothing had really been going according to plan. Whatever the case was, she hadn’t expected Meadow to actually be this wonderful and it was so nice that she was indeed this wonderful.

Sugar moved a bit in her nest, it was hard for her to get comfortable despite how lovely it was. She honestly felt like she was going to burst open at any moment. So it made lying down a bit uncomfortable no matter what position she was in. She gave a soft sigh as she lay out on her side, sprawled out rather like road kill. It didn’t help that she was honestly a touch depressed as well, her silly notions of love. Her ears fell back against her head as she drifted off into her own mind for a moment. What had she been thinking? She should have known better, one night of passion a relationship did not make. It was a bitter pill to swallow and not one that she wanted to. Her mood had gone through the spectrum as of late, ranging from, happy on to overjoyed and from there it had plummeted downward into anger and hurt and then shot back up to a sort of level acceptance. Stupid, she was so stupid. She should have known Nuthatch for what he was, how could she not have seen it? She gave a small chuff as she thumped her foot against the wall of the burrow.

It was then that Meadow’s words brought her back to the present and out of her own mind. “Oh, yes any day now I imagine. I doubt it will take much longer for them to come. Already it is too tight in there I am sure.” She whispered back softly a gentle smile on her face. She waited a moment before tilting her head to one side. “I’m not sure, I am thinking four. An even four would be nice.” She said with a small nod before looking up at her. “I’ll take that wager and make it an even split, two does and two bucks.” She said squirming slightly. “I have a question Meadow, if it’s not too intrusive.” She paused waiting for the other’s response.

Meadowsnip was what she called an honorary marli. She didn't have babies of her own. Yes, she had tried many times in the spring but it never seemed to work. Denial was what kept her hope alive. She REFUSED to be infertile. Until she had a litter of her own she could love, she took care of the kittens who had no mother, or a few of the very big litters. She also tended to the pregnant marlis.

She sat beside the expecting female and leaned over to groom her ears and head. "I'll prepare a larder for the kittens this afternoon. They won't appreciate being born on dirt, no matter how soft it is." She could only imagine what having a belly full of baby rabbits would feel like. Couldn't be comfortable. After fussing on Sugar's fur a moment, Meadowsnip hopped around to the other side and spread the mulch bed further so no part of the mother would be uncomfortable.

"I think an even four would be simply wonderful. Two little does to be marlis of their own one day...and two little bucks to be future captains! How wonderful." She didn't mention the lack of a father for poor Sugarcane. She knew Nuthatch. His breeding tactics were almost as shameful as Pitchweed's were. But then again, Meadowsnip also believed a rabbit should only have one mate.

"Go right ahead, deary. You can ask me anything you'd like."

Sugar leaned into the fussing over her fur. She hadn’t been able to clean her fur properly in some time; it stuck up a bit oddly in places. She was getting far too big to do much more than lie on her side and stare at the roof of the down. She gave a long sigh before looking up at Meadow. “Thank you, I wish I could be of more help.” She whispered softly. She had never been one to rest on the kindness of others. She liked to go out and help as well, to give it her all. She stretched out for a moment before flopping back; it really would be any day now.

“Oh yes, that would be wonderful. Being a grandmarli would be simply divine. I do hope that they will find themselves someone special. All of them, even my little captains.” She whispered softly patting her tummy with a paw. She had high hopes for these little ones, whatever they may be. She hoped they would uphold certain decorum. That they would know kindness and share it with those around them, she planned on teaching them all that she knew. They would not be like their father, she would make sure of it, even if it meant a fight.

She shook her head before looking up at Meadow. “Pardon me if this seems rude or abrupt. I was just, wondering why you didn’t have any kittens of your own? Or any special somebunny? I really don’t want to seem rude so please don’t take offense. I just was sort of wondering.”

Meadowsnip shook her head. "No, no. I am the help here. You just focus on the little ones. You can move about again when they're born. Believe me, you'll have nothing to do but chase them about all day. But they will be good bucks and does one day." She giggled. "Just make sure to keep them from the bad eggs here."

She fell quiet as the other answered and considered her answer carefully. "Well...I've tried for kittens in the spring. But nothing seems to work and no male here remains faithful to trying with me." She hopped to the other side of the burrow and checked the food supplies.

"You've barely eaten, Sugar. You need to keep your energy up for the birth." She seemed concerned. "Is the strain hurting your belly? I can chew your food if you want."
