Someone in the kitchen was singing (off-key) at the top of their lungs about being in the kitchen with some girl. That someone was also tapping their feet and giving zero ******** about the weird stares that the previous people popping their heads in gave him. Said someone also gave zero ******** that the reason any them checked in was to see if someone had been strangling a cat.
Had he been in a more serious mood, Before would have told them no, he wasn't strangling a cat. And he would have followed up with a statement that if he was strangling an animal, it would be a dog. But that was neither here nor there.
Since no one had told him to shut the ******** up, or at the very least to lower the volume, the Mist trainee was going to keep singing about being in the kitchen with some girl and an old banjo.
Much to his weapon's amusement.Ice Queen Before's singing isn't really that bad XD

The noise was a bit disconcerting--in fact Syd had been reading (not romance--an actual work related paper) when it started--and it was somewhat hard to keep reading when the singing was so loud. With a slight sigh she closed the paper and set it on the table, getting to her feet and heading for the kitchen. The sight there had a grin pulling at her lips. Ever since she had met Before during their trip to Halloween, she had felt she knew him somehow. And that he was a fellow mist (and apparent music lover--although she winced ever so slightly at one particular note) made him like family, right? Or as close to family as one of the solitary Mists got. "Can I ask what you're making?" she asked, leaning against the doorframe.

The question had the already cheery smile on Before's face pull wider and the voice made him glance over his shoulder to answer, "Iunno just yet, other than it's gonna be a pie!" he answered, beaming at his fellow Misty. He recognized Sydney from previous missions, mostly that she was usually in the company of Al, not to mention that time during Fright Night.
"I'm totes open to suggestions as to whether it oughta be savory or dessert pie," he added while waggling his eyebrows. Before didn't mind requests, in fact he loved taking them whenever he actually knew the recipe. Hopefully he'd know whatever Syd wanted.

"Oh, can I help?" Syd asked, her eyes brightening as she headed into the kitchen to wash her hands. "We can see what we have in stock--but I would LOVE a cherry or apple pie. It's getting close to Thanksgiving... back home," she added. "I don't know where we would get a turkey, but a pie would be great!" She grinned as she dried her hands off. "Just tell me what I need to do to help!" Pieeeee, they were going to have pieeee. Her stomach grumbled just at the thought. You could practically see the pies dancing in her head, as well.

Before lit up like the Fourth of July at the offer to help. Baking with others was just as much fun as taking requests! He reached for a spare apron hanging on the rack and tossed it over to Syd. "Welcome aboard!" At the flavors, Before looked thoughtful for a moment, rubbing his chin as he contemplated the suggestions and smearing flour on him in the process. "Hmmmm," he pursed his lips, "Tell you what! Since you're gonna be helping me and all, I can make both! If we got enough of the fruits for the fillings that is. I know we got enough for another crust. Oh oh oh and since it's almost Thanksgiving, mebbe I can make pump-er," he suddenly tensed, shaking his head while his face visibly soured as if something just died in his mouth. "Ugh, after the s**t we went through, forget the last flavor I was about to say," he requested, sticking his tongue out comically.
"Anyhoo~ First I need you to check what fruits we still have available. Oh and check for cinnamon too!" he instructed as he turned his attention to the dough he'd been kneading.

"Sure," she said, heading for the pantry to dig through the supplies. Really, they needed to open it up so people could go to the mainland, she thought as she rooted around. "I've found apples!" she called as she came upon a barrel of them. "They still look good." She hauled the barrel to the side and started looking for more. "Not seeing any cherries--but I found some sweet potatoes, would that work?" She pulled the bag aside as well before looking for the cinnamon. "And found the cinnamon!" she called, triumphantly waving a bag of cinnamon sticks. She was so proud of herself. Seriously. This was PIE.

Before pursed his lips at hearing sweet potatoes, "Iunno, never tried that before. Would they work? Hrmrmrmrmmmm," he murmured, "Better save those for another dish, iun wanna end up wasting it. Baking's more of a precise thing. Unless we're making refrigerator cakes." *w* "But bring the apples, six or seven. Wait! What kind of apples? Fuji or...?" He turned to stare wide-eyed at Syd, awaiting for her response. He looked like he was debating on sharing a baking disaster story with her. Or maybe looking like a deer in headlights just came naturally to him.

"We've got some Fuji and... I'm pretty sure those are Granny Smiths," she said, picking one of the bright green apples up and taking a bite out of it. "Yep, Granny Smith," she said happily. "Which do you want?" she added, wiping at a drip of apple juice that was trailing down her chin. She loved tart apples. "But I've seen sweet potato pies in stores before... too bad we can't get online and look up a recipe."

"Oooh Smith! Granny Smith mos def!" he declared, giving his fellow Mist the thumb's up. "I made the mistake of using Fuji once. Cleaning the oven after that was ******** hell," he shuddered as he made a face at the memory XP "Not as bad as Minipet duty though."
Hearing that there were sweet potato pies intrigued him, "That sounds yum! But yeah, we gotta wait for Lifers to give us clearance and s**t for the computer and internet. Oh! Mebbe during the next free weekend we're allowed, I can look it up then. Gotta restock on ingredients after all," he nodded solemnly.
Vanna just rolled her eyes, though she did it with some level of affection. She knew her bonded took his baking seriously.

"Minipet duty," she repeated with a wince. "I could tell you stories--but the idea of talking about that while baking is enough to make me--" she bit down on her apple and filled her arms with the granny smiths, bringing them to the other mist and setting them on the counter before taking the apple out of her mouth--"sick to my stomach. My poor coat," she added looking down at it. "I go through so many of them." She started washing the apples without thinking. "So where did you learn to bake, Before?" she asked, curious. "I mean, unless you don't like talking about the past."

Before nodded in sympathy, he'd been lucky he hadn't gone on that particular mission. He'd heard horror stories about it from some of the Lifers in the lab. "Yeaaaaah, ixnay on the inipetmay talk," he agreed then beamed in approval when Sydney began to wash the apples. "I was totes gonna keep the skin on when we slice 'em up, good thinking."
As he went to retrieve some knives to cut the apples with, he barely paused at her question. "Nah, is coo~ is totes coo~ it's not exactly headline-making though. I learned to bake here. Pretty much took all the kitchen-duty shifts I could to earn personal kitchen time. Bought lotsa baking books during those once-a-month-weekend-offs. Studied the crap outta the ones in the Deus library. And the rest is just trial and error. Though never mix crushed minipets in with regular food," he warned with utmost seriousness. Before was speaking from experience.

"Crushed... minipets," she repeated as she handed over the clean apples. "Seriously? Like my--like the fluffy poms thing with the bad attitude that I won?" she asked, wincing at the idea of someone trying to eat her pe--well, not HER pet, she'd sold him, but she'd gotten rather fond of the mean little jerk-- "Doesn't eating things from Halloween cause problems?" she asked, trying not to wonder HOW they got the animals to stay still long enough to crush them. She almost managed.

Before returned to the workstation and placed one knife within Sydney's reach in case she finished washing and he hadn't completely sliced through all the apples. When his fellow Mist began to hand over the clean apples, he readily accepted them, slicing them in halves and then quarters before carving out the core from each wedge. He pointed a finger at Sydney in a manner similar to a certain blue-suit wearing defense attorney, "Preeeeecisely!", he declared in a manner that was more Ace Ventura than Phoenix Wright. He went back to the apples, "Julie showed me just how bad it could be but then again, she looked like all she was doing was throwing stuff together. She wasn't even doing any documentation and that's kinda wasteful, imo."

"But you watched, right?" she said, starting to help him cut up the apples. "Did you take any notes? Like the side effects?" She wouldn't eat it, herself, but that didn't mean she wasn't interested! "I mean, since it was already happening, of course." Yes her fellow hunters probably suffered horribly... but that wasn't HER fault!

Before never really allowed anyone to taste the batch he'd made with Julie. He didn't want to risk anyone suffering from any adverse side-effects, "Welllll, not the ones we made together, but I did hear in the Deus twitter-feed about some stuff she made turned hunters into animals," he explained vaguely, "I didn't catch the exact deets, but if I remember right, Marcus might know more about it?" he shrugged.
"Buuuuuuuuut tell ya what! Iffin' I ever get the desire to, like, duplicate anything Julie made, imma give you the heads up, and we can TOTES test them out!" he beamed. A pause. "I mean on someone else."
